Why I sold my ADV bike
Переглядів 7452 роки тому
The market has gotten out of hand lately. That includes the price of used bikes. Especially used ADV bikes. My Africa Twin was no exception. I didn't want to sell this bike but inflation made me. I tested the market and put an, "I don't want to sell number" on the bike. To my surprise many people replied. I had no choice but the let the Africa Twin go. Getting more money than what I paid for it...

Shinko 705 tires front and back. How I dropped the Africa Twin for the first time. Was doing some minor off road in Florida. Suddenly I got caught off guard by deep sand. It did not help that I had forgotten to turn off the traction control and ABS. Oh well, it was not a matter of if but when. Luckily it was a soft landing and nothing broke. Not even a scratch. Turned off all the driver aids an...

Weight loss? thats not a solution when your own weight is more than 180lbs, man. I mean the weight is something very abstract because you can save 15lbs in your bike but if you are a big man (or woman) its a nonsense...

I am not against the new bikes but with my multi 2011 think I am so fast like a V4. Do a custom remap, filter and exhaust system. A good Cordona quickshifter, cruise control and öhlins SCU. And finish… the power is so raw with this update, difficult to find it in the new bikes! Only my opinion, but I rode V4 before I start writing here.. Chreers

I had a problem with the heated grips. The dealership ordered replacement grips and they didn't work either. They finally told me it was the wiring harness and it needed Tobe replaced. After 30 days Honda gave them permission. It wad covered by Honda Protection Plan, so we had to get it approved. We finally got it completed and no issues. Perhaps Honda is having problems with their wiring harnesses. I haven't heard anything on the AT forums about it.

Your problem seems to be unique, and my observation is that you shouldn’t have taken the bike without it fully tested and repaired by a HONDA factory technician, employed by HONDA. The dealers are just selling parts and labour for the fitment thereof.. unfortunately the dealers are ruining all brands.

Always learn how to work on your bike, it's part of the journey. I'd never trust a dealer that can't explain what and why things are getting done. But what has helped me in these situations was the ability to also relay my diagnosis to any shop or mechanic immediately removing any guess work. BUT WAIT THERE"S MORE! Now I'm stuck in the "We don't work on old bikes!" Motorcycles are great but dealers and Power Shops are mostly garbage because it's really just a retail business trying to stay in business. Even if you don't work on your bike, learn how it works.

Amazing how they changed all the expensive parts first before checking the wire harness which is basic troubleshooting. I would argue against paying all but the wire harness fix. Tell us all your dealer so we can stay clear from that company.

I have a '13 and an '18. Each has its good points and its bad points. The good points of each are really very good. The bad points are not really that bad. Blending the two of them (selecting / riding each one for its best attributes, which do not coincide) nothing else would really interest me. I paid about $9000 for my '13, and 4 years later i've paid about $9000 for my '18. Each was a bargain in its own way, and certainly for 3 times that a bike would have to be beyond miraculous to be worth it. [edit] Something I forgot to mention, and it's important. Each bike does have its weak points, but what I have found is that discovering techniques and skills to deal with the weak points has been a source of reward and enjoyment. My '13 doesn't have the best low-speed balance - so learning to compensate for that and stop at intersections with decorum or do elegant low-speed turns is very rewarding. I don't like the quickshift on the '18 between 1-2-3 rd gear. So, learning to just blend in a little clutch when changing to smooth up and down in the low gears has resulted in a perfect shift and a rewarding cure for a weak point. There are several other weak points on each, and I work at mastering them. Instead of being perfect, each bike has a blend of amazing strengths and ... opportunities to acquire and exercise skill. It makes them unique and very enjoyable. It gives them character.

Time to see a lawyer, small claims court. They did work on the bike that did not fix the problems and any basic mechanic should look at the wiring connections, this is considered to be a mechanics "due diligence." Once the dealership gets a court order summoning them to court, they will probably try to make an out of court settlement with you. Good luck.

I own a 2011 multistrada 1200s and I'd love a newer bike but like you said for 20k for a new bike I'm not gaining anything, maybe a little more power and better sound with the v4 motor but is that really worth 20k. But I still want something newer since mine is getting old but I can't justify spending that much money on a bike I only get to use part time throughout the year. Maybe I'll trade it in and go back to an Aprilia tuono

Woohoo! Electronics FTW! Wish they could make a truly bare-bones adv bike at a reasonable price. We can add our own tech we don't need their off-brand bits and bobs. Motorcycle manufacturers should spend more time developing bullet-proof engines and platforms and less time worrying about novel technologies and ineffective electronic aids.

im a mechanic based in germany. and so what your dealership did was just replacing party until it ran again? in germany we call this "teile-tauscher" which means parts-replacer lol. they should search for the actual problems first and then quote you on that. we had the same problem with an ATAS where the cable from the tac broke and the bike didnt start. his re´plair was like 200€ for searching the error and then fix the cable. sorry for my english and greetings from germany :)

Firstly, you're insane for paying any of that, especially work that didn't even fix the problem! Secondly, never EVER tie a tow rope to your bike to be towed! If you use a tow rope on a bike then wrap it around the right footpeg once and then hold it on with the weight of your boot so in an emergency you can lift your foot and release the tow if needed.
