Scud Running FAIL! Pop-Up IFR.

    I'm confused and have a question. 8:25 While I understand that in order to complete a landing in such conditions the pilot should, if able, intercept an ILS system however the emergency aircraft has a faulty engine which everyone must assume will fail before the landing has been completed. So why would the controller request that the emergency aircraft, which already has demonstrated that it can not climb effectively and has since degraded in performance, descend from 5k to 3k when in order to make a successful approach must, on its current course, complete a 180 degree course change? Why wouldn't the pilot challenge that altitude change? In the present conditions shouldn't the pilot want to keep as much altitude as possible and wait until the last moments to change to a lower altitude? With a dead engine I was under the impression that you should only trade altitude for speed in order to keep the aircraft flyable? Shouldn't he have waited to go to the lower altitude at least until after he made the 180 to approach the airstrip? Or even if a 180 wasn't required shouldn't he have descended only after determining that he could successfully glide to the airfield without an operating engine? As it stands after descending the pilot can't regain that altitude and if the engine does die, as is likely, he will have confirmed the arrangement of a probable tragedy in league with the controller. They were both wrong to change altitude so early? Did the controller simply treat an emergency landing, brought about by a lack of power via a failing power plant, as a standard approach to the airfield? Do controllers not understand to never trade altitude, unless necessary, when a power loss is being experienced by an aircraft? What am I not taking into consideration or understanding here? (Not even asking why the controller didn't vector the aircraft directly to the airfield without all of the standard approach course changes, straight in was a better solution, especially if ILS was available on that approach and especially with GPS guidance and knowing the airstrip's altitude).

    My first ever solo instrument flight was from EGTU England, to Enniskillen in Northern Ireland, back in 2014 in a Cessna 172 with no auto pilot. It was a 2.5 hr flight of hand flying IMC, I got airframe icing, and unforecast 30kt crosswinds on landing. I was alone, I won't forget that flight, especially crossing the Irish Sea! I descended over the ocean to melt away the icing.

    "he got a pilot killed" ??? isn't that murder??? did you mean to say "one of his ferry pilots was killed during a ferry flight" vocabulary is very important you could implicate someone using such bad vocabulary.

    I’m not going to speak to your experience cuz it’s irrelevant. I lost track of how many reasons you gave to not fly and exhibited text book hazardous attitudes. Knowing your instruments were shit and not having an updated database, you weren’t even legal to fly IFR.

    I've been in this situation before flying with a low time pilot (and myself as a student pilot), encountering a descending ceiling and scattered light showers. The low time PIC became fixated on maintaining the 1000ft AGL legal minimum altitude, and we were starting to skim the bottom of the clouds. I had to pretty forcefully assert that we descend immediately to remain visual, and consider turning back. I also recommended we use the "bad weather" configuration (which IIRC in that plane was 80 knots & 20deg flap). We radioed another plane a few miles ahead, and determined that it was an isolated pocket of weather, with higher ceilings again within another couple of miles. We were likely already halfway through it, so we pressed on. I recommended following a road that ran roughly parallel to our track to help maintain visual reference. The area was luckily coastal plains, so no mountains to avoid. We probably never got below 500ft AGL, though with patches of showers on the windshield it didn't feel like a lot. The scariest part wasn't the weather, but seeing a more experienced pilot than myself get fixated, and stop making preemptive decisions.

      @@Cletrac305 I think you are correct, but perhaps it doesn't matter in this case because he had too much speed anyway. See him execute two sideslips before landing? I don't know enough to be sure, but I doubt the idling engine is adding much thrust, just kept running for safety, I assume.

    Foreflight does NOT give you real time weather radar. ADSB has a delay that has killed many pilots. You also admitted your artificial horizon doesn't really work, but you took off knowing you might be IFR and went IFR. You also need a current NAV database in the plane's GPS (not the iPad) to be legal. I've never seen such gross incompetence. Perfect demonstration of how experienced pilots normalize deviant behavior because they've gotten away with it in the past and lived, until they finally don't get away with it....I'm speechless.

    • @KerryDMcCauley
      @KerryDMcCauley 2 місяці тому

      I know adsb has a delay I use it every day. I wasn't worried about the horizon, I can deal with it. You don't need a current database to shit non gps approaches, so still leagel. Wasn't worried about this trip at all.

    • @rickdc3
      @rickdc3 2 місяці тому

      @@KerryDMcCauley Partly true. You can still use your outdated GPS for situational awareness, but you can't use it for navigation if ATC gives you a waypoint. You would have to say "unable" and request a HDG or VOR radial. While Pilot Debrief channels help make viewers safer pilots, yours does the exact opposite and may lead to a scud running death in the future. But at least you made a dollar off a video.

    Sounds like you had a few holes in the Swiss Cheese I am glad that they didn't line up. You always had the out of going IFR. Scud running without a out is suicide. I would have had flight following, if possible at that altitude. That way a pop up is not a big deal since they already know who you are. I guess that the high altitude gas savings with the turbine wasn't enough to cancel out the headwinds.

    • @KerryDMcCauley
