For God's sake man! Check the gear motor brushs! I've seen this more than a few times.
It probably has the same system as the older ARMY C-12 200. I would probably replace the up and down limit switches or the motor controller. We jack the c-12’s every day and take for granted the danger. Unfortunately a little over a month ago we had an accident letting one down and the gear wasn’t locked down and it collapsed and killed a fella. This wasn’t at the site I work but the same company. So taking it off the jacks and going up is serious business. Hope you get your issue resolved.
Thanks for sharing this! I have a Twin Bonanza so pretty much the same gear. Your gear switch is different than mine so I can't comment or share any thoughts on how that may or may not be the culprit as either one of those age related things or a nuance of those switches in particular. I did watch the Oshkosh clip when you first had the issue as well as for obvious reasons I'm very interested in how this plays out. The one big difference here in your gear swing on the ground and in the air is you're not vibrating or moving which means nothing else in that whole system is either. There can't be that much wiring to inspect for in intermittent short? I have a landing gear circuit breaker on the floor as well (new) which would be in play for this as well as a 3 amp breaker I also have for the relay. I'll be watching to see if you find the smoking gun on this one.
I'll keep you posted.
@@KerryDMcCauley My plane is about to go into the annual inspection and while its on jacks i'll do the manual gear lowing procedure and see if the 150 pumps number in the Manual is accurate! And, get some kind of idea of how I accomplish that why flying at the same time.
@@GavinD50C I always do that each annual.
I’ve found loose wire on Bonanza gear switch caused an intermittent problem
I'll be checking that as well.
I don't like contact cleaner in general. There's a product called Deoxit D5, which I swear by. I would think that at some point a tired switch should be replaced.
what about lazy circuit breakers or relays with worn contacts?
The relays seemed fine, but I'm going to clean the contacts.
Did you check the anti retraction swtich to make sure it isnt an issue or intermittent?
Not yet.
Micro Swtiches need adjusted??????????????????????? Flying this bird with a known issue, An accident waiting to happen!
Please don't talk you have no idea what you are talking about

The price of gear motors these days, it's probably $10 evey time you cycle the gear.
Got that right.
I wish you "3 green" every single time you need them Kerry.
Thanks!
Better to have fail hard sometimes then the intermittent failures.
Intermittent is the worst.
Probably a dumb question, but could you test the hell out the switches and relays but save the wear and tear by disconnecting the motors that drive the gear and wiring some kind of indicator light in their place (or a more current hungry load if that's what the system is expecting)? I can think of a lot of reasons why you couldn't or wouldn't want to do this on an airplane, so I guess I'm just curious whether the reason is practical like difficult to access wiring or if it's more of a general don't-make-small-problems-big-by-touching-things policy.
That's an idea.
Got my PPL in 1977. I'm convinced I missed my calling in life. I love these videos.
👍✅👏
I worked at a shop in California, We had a King Air on jacks. We had a small earthquake, it was big enough to knock it off the wing jacks and drive them through the wings.
OUCH!
Bummer
Been in that exact same spot Kerry. That long pause, kinda thinking, kinda hoping. We got to the point of, "Welp, don't move the gear level like that again." Was a charter B60, never had the problem again.
Never rush the gear!
When was the last time the connection of the wires to the gear switch were removed and cleaned and reinstalled???
Probably been a while. That's the next step.
@@KerryDMcCauley I was thinking it maybe a good Idea to check the gear motor brushes. We had a cracked flap motor with bad brushes that did the same thing.
I have worked on a Staggerwing for the last 30 years. the owner had problems getting the gear to come down also. we tried doing the hangar retracts and no problem and the we flew it and no problems. I'm thinking a very old switch. We never did find the problem! Thanks for the videos!
I hate it when there isn't an obvious solution.
Contact cleaner won’t lube anything
Yeah, not using it.
@@KerryDMcCauley Or as we say downunder here in Oz - "Yeah no"
Maybe you're the most successful one out of all the cast of dangerous flights.
Maybe, but Cory, Pete and Marcio are all killing it!
100 miles? Depends on whose SRR you're in. Rescue 936 (S-92A) from Caernarfon did a job 280nm West of Ireland in 2016. One of 751's rescue AW101 from the Azores did a job that was most of the way to Canada. ua-cam.com/video/Pz1OcZsfFg8/v-deo.html Your PLB beeps on Air Guard 121.5 every couple of seconds, so air band is kinda covered. A survival craft portable radio would have the marine emergency channel 16 and maybe a small number of SAR or ship-to-ship channels. Normally, one would expect SAR aircraft to be able to direction find on 121.5 or CH16. Modern LED 'flares' are the 'airline-proof' alternative to pyrotechnics.
Just lost my alternator last week in my Beech Debonair so when I saw your video I thought I would compare. Caught it early on the scan, as the ammeter was showing a discharge. Confirmed battery voltage, static (12.5V instead of 13.6V) on the engine monitor. Cycled the alt switch several times, no change then proceeded to shut down un-needed systems as I had another 3 hours to go and did not want to think about using the Beechcraft emergency gear hand crank with 50+ turns. Had plenty of juice for the gear and flaps, no issues. Your video provided direction to get headset lamp(s) for onboard equipment and installing a backup up alternator since I am upgrading my avionics to Garmin glass soon. BIG RED X's scare me. Thanks for passing along experience and advice.
Hey love the content! Just wondering why you press the mic to talk to others in the video and to the camera vs talking on the frequency?

Great story. Subscribed.
Welcome aboard!
Great advice from a true master of his trade, Kerry! All of us old Bush Pilots have been there and done that! Heck, but it sure woke up some long time forgotten memories, like skid running across a pass through the mountains of Ecuador following the road turn by turn, as you said with full flaps, merely 4ft above the pavement, almost colliding with chickens crossing the road in horror with wildly flapping wings. I still get an adrenalin spike, when I remember shortly after, flying around this right hand curve, facing an old truck crawling up hill, steaming from his radiator and full of native Indians in the back. I franticly had to pull on the yoke to avoid a collision! If I close my eyes, I still see their to death scared, wide open eyes and how they grabbed and pulled down the rims of their straw hats. :)))) Looking at my flight log it was December the 3rd 1994, flying my beautifully restored straight 1948 C170 on the leg from Guayaquil to Esmeraldas.
We learn a lot from those incidents! Glad you made it.
@@KerryDMcCauley I always flew with a plan B and just in case with a plan C. I guess that made a bigger difference than I ever anticipated. Your no nonsense video's will safe lives! I feel privileged to have made your acquaintance.

Amazing video and audio and a great story. Thank you Kerry
Glad you enjoyed it
Looks like some deconfliction was indicated
Wow! Glad your training turned out well for you and the instructor candidates still are.
The candidates had a 75% pass rate in the course. We have high standards if the freefall instructor business and passing is not a given. Most candidates who fail will pass on their second attempt, but not all.
So I imagine this became a teaching point for the next class on why not grabbing the pull away handle to roll skydiver on stomach is a bad idea At least you lived to teach that point tonyour next class
We covered not grabbing the evaluators handles before jumping but things happen fast in freefall. That's why we train.
Is the plane insured for such a crossing?
Yes, but it's getting harder and harder to find pilots who the insurance companies will accept.
Can a Malibu feather its prop? We have a raft for our trawler. It has a floating 100' banner that we can deploy to make locating the raft easier.
No, the Malibu can't feather its prop.
That is just not something I ever wanted to do. Absolutely no desire to jump out of a plane.
Definitely not for everyone.
