Carving out Lattice on Rhea egg shell
I am carving lattice that was drawn on by me and sprayed with hair spray to keep it from smearing off while I am carving from the oils of my skin. I talk about the burs I am using and why. I talk about my book “Egg Carving for Beginners” that is available on Amazon. My new egg cottage

This is my new egg cottage. My husband remodeled one our sheds for me as I was out of room. This is a 10x20 shed. My work station and my shelves are all 16 feet long. Now you can see where my egg carving happens. New videos to come soon.

This is a Rhea egg and I am using a turbo carver and the two burs I am using is the 33 1/2 to score it and the 699 tapered end to do the actual cut out. I glue my pattern on my egg then score and then cut out. You can purchase my book on egg carving for beginners at www.Dorrancebookstore.com

This is a tutorial for removing the membrane from carved eggs. Some people bleach the inside of their eggs before they carve them as the membrane is pretty tough and it makes cutting easier. But most kill the membrane after they cut their eggs as the membrane helps hold the egg together when carving.

Katy la sigo desde hace mucho tiempo y voy a comprar el libro aunque no se como lo voy a traducir al Español. Estoy en una parada que no tengo forma de seguir con los huevos de Emú llegar a la capa averdosada y conseguir llegar a la capa blanca y sin romperla ,veo que utiliza una pasta que parece de lijar DEX ,usted me dirá. Do you know how to remove the membrane from the inside of an ostrich egg?
You soak the egg in non scented bleach. At first it will turn it yellow. When the yellow is gone the membrane is dissolved. Do this outside the bleach is too strong for inside.
When you say you are wearing a mask…is that something like a N95 mask or a respirator type “mask”. Getting started on this and I bought a desktop dust collector from Oneida, it uses a MERV 15 filter. Plan on building a box around it to put my hands in it. Hopefully that is enough.
N95 mask now I used to have the filtered ones but they are still hard to find
Just got the book, the carving box plans is great but…that is for exhausting the dust outside. If you can’t exhaust it to the outside you have to make or buy a box with a filter. I ordered one from Oneida that has a MERV 15 filter…is that good enough? Please reply I need to make sure my lungs are safe.
It should be, do a google search on the mirror grams on the filter strength and it should tell you how big of the particles. I bought one myself since the one I had was too strong and sucking the heat or the air out of my she shed making it to where I couldn’t carve during very hot or very cold days, Only the days I could leave my door open comfortably lol
@@katywilson4123 I looked up the specs for a MERV 15 is says: 0.30-1.0 greater than or equal to 85% 1.0-3.0 greater than or equal to 90% 3.0-10.0 greater than or equal to 95% The question is... how small are the particles given off by the high speed carver as you carve the egg? Also, not sure what you meant by "mirror grams"?
The dust is super fine. I meant micro grams. The average particle size, true density, specific surface area, and pore diameter of the chicken eggshell powder are 98.03 µm, 2.25 g/cm 3 , 4.06 m 2 /g and 196.90 Å,
@@katywilson4123 Kathy thank you. If the particle size is 98.03 um then the filter should do it's job as it does very well all the way down to 0.3um or 0.3 microns!

Hi Katy. My friend gave me an ostrich egg which i want to paint on. Im not sure how long they were sitting on the field for. Could be weeks. Will the process to clean out the insides be the same. I am worried about them being rotten already.
I would say so but it will take longer to drill into it. I wouldn’t use a cone, I would use a actual bit to get your hold started then go to a cone bit to make it round and make it as big as you want.

Your channel is charming I’m so happy I found you! I’ve just got a rheas egg I’d like to turn into a lamp, no carving or anything just horizontal with a small led stuck inside. I’m worried about being able to remove all the membrane from the inside do you have any tips about that? Xxxxxx
Put it in a big bowl and make sure you have sponges or cloths to protect it. Fill will bleach and let sit for 45 min drain and rinse you should be good to go

I see these are 6 years old but I hope you can answer my question. I am new to egg carving and was wondering where I go to find a drill ;ike yours? Everything I have seen is more like a Dremel and heavy and bulky

I don’t clean them. If they get gummed up there is a cleaning stone any bur supplier sells

I will either draw them or use free clip art and print them and glue them on the egg. The scented bleaches don’t work as well and the splash less ones are more gel like so I am not a fan of them either they just don’t work as well as regular old fashioned bleach

Hi Katy - love your videos! Thanks so much for posting! Are your drill bits tungsten carbide steel or diamond coated?
These are regular dental burs. Some are carbide and some are diamond coated. It depends on what I am doing, as to which one I use for what. My book Egg Carving for Beginners explains each one and what they do and what you can use them for.

I use a 33 1/2 inverted cone to outline and use a 699 tapered end for the cutting and smoothing. I have a book on Amazon called egg carving for beginners that tells you about many different burs and cuts

These eggs were months old and not refrigerated. I was not about to eat them. They stank. Lol
This video was so helpful, thank you. And I learnt more than just how to clean out eggs! I'll be keeping a closer eye on our chicken eggs from now on, making sure they are healthy. I'm still waiting for our emus to start laying.

I got it at wal mart and just inserted one of the needles from the syringes into the tube.
