An honest diary of my hikes, wild camps, and adventures in the Scottish Highlands and beyond (and far too many random animal facts you never asked for!).
I started this channel to encourage myself to spend more time outdoors and live a more adventurous life, and to hopefully inspire you to do the same.

What is it REALLY like to live in the Scottish Countryside?
Scotland is often seen as wet, windy, and grey, but that's only a small part of the real truth. I want to share what living in the countryside is REALLY like, from beaches and mountains to snowy forests and rural hills. Here's the Scotland I know.
🥾 If this makes you curious to explore more of the wilds of Scotland, I think you’ll love my trip to the famous Glencoe Valley, where I wild swim in the freezing lochs and hike up into the mystical Lost Valley... ua-cam.com/video/CqiplQ8lsGE/v-deo.html.

Until now, I've always solo wild camped in pre-scouted, very hidden areas I knew I could get to. That all changed with this wild camp. After a failed munro summit the week before, I headed off into the wind and rain and deep into the heart of the Cairngorms after Ben Macdui. At 1309m, it is the second tallest mountain in Scotland and all of Britain, beaten only by Ben Nevis, and the tallest mountain in the Cairngorms mountain range. It was a wet and wild day and we had limited views, but it felt so good to spend a whole day ou...

Well... this wasn't how I envisaged the hike! We attempted Bruach na Frithe on the Isle of Skye, the easiest munro in the world-famous Cuillin Mountain range. The rest of the Black Cuillin is a technical and vertigo-inducing territory, but this hike was supposed to be okay if you have the fitness for 5-6 hours in the hills and climbing 900m elevation. Skye had other plans! And I hope you enjoy ...
Remote Wild Camp in an Isolated Valley (I Didn't Expect This!)

This was one of the most unexpected and incredible wild camps I've done to date! We headed into the isolated Glen Einich valley deep in the Cairngorms, having only scouted out the area on maps and not knowing what the area actually looked like. Will like to join such a trekking group
Did this in 2006 in mist but luckily it cleared enough to get great views. We then climbed the Am Basteir tooth (terrifying) and then took Naismith route up to the tiny summit of Sgurr Nan Gillean (properly terrifying to me) then abseiled down a chimney on the north side. Tim Mosedale (of Everest climbing fame) was our guide so as a novice climber with not a great head for heights were in great hands. Never again, once was enough. 😓😀
What a glorious film, Chloe! We visited Knepp in July this year and had an amazing experience. Your film has captured the essence of Knepp so beautifully. Thankyou.
Thanks for sharing! Your observations are beautifully poetic. Wonderful to get a glimpse into your experiences outdoors - so well informed but the knowledge isn’t at all separate from an intimate communion with nature and all of its poetry, really lovely to see
Hi Chloe..I've just found your channel. It is wonderful! From your stunning photography, your beautiful choice of words, the beautiful music and your infectious sense of joy, it easily rivals any professional production. Truly small works of art. I see you haven't posted for a long time. I hope all is well with you and that you bring us more of your joyous work very soon. Thanks so much! x
Well done! Ben Macdui was also my first Munro back in 1980. Been back a few times since over the years. Should be back in the Cairngorms in May - it draws you back. Thanks for sharing.
I would explore and never get bored. I make bone jewlery from salvaged animal bones. I'm 46 and just starting my new wildcamping adventure. I hope to find lots of bones in the places I choose to camp around Scotland. I'm feeling so many emotions and lots of anxiety. You're so brave and have so much life ahead of you to learn about wildcamping ( how to stay warm) 🤭 and enjoy the outdoors. Enjoy friend ❤
If only I could like this video a hundred times in one go. You deserve more subscribers for sure; Knepp is truly breathtaking.
Ill be walking jogle, do younknow best spots ro xamp or best route through scotland?
Good for you! We all have apprehensions to do things unknown.. Been there, done that! My wife and i have spent the past 30 years of adventure.. Biking, hiking, climbing, bicycle touring, enjoying the nature! We are free from the stress of the fast paced life that we were stuck in.. Our families didn't understand our nomatic adventure and leaving perfectly good money making jobs. StaySafe!😅
Lovely video really enjoyed watching that .. we often take our dogs for a walk there so peaceful
Thanks for the inspiring video's always a great watch... Just amazing
Superb video. Cheers from Norway 👍🙂
The vibe in this video is nice! Especially around 5:30. It's looks so peaceful 🙌I would love to revisit Scotland someday.. It is such a beautiful country! Great video, I enjoyed watching it 😊 Have a great day. Best regards Simon
You didn't run into any "Large Grey Man" then, I take it? Personally, I would be very cautious about summitting any mountain with sheer sides and an abundance of sight obscuring fog.
Hello Chole, we have not heard from you for some time now. Hope that you are still having outdoor adventures and are healthy. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺
I heard of a story of a dogman ripping through with 1 of its clawed hands through the door of a tent and the guy had to use his shotgun and blew off the dogman's hand. I think it was right hand.
I hope you have that same joy when you find a dog-man nest, hilarious 😂. "Dog-men" do exist, and I say that as a species label.
Hi Chloe, this was a fantastic video. We really enjoyed it. We loved scotland a lot when we took our motorhome there. So many fantastic nature scenes. We just hated the midges of course. Nice video
Hope you are well and all is good. Miss your smiling face and videos!
this is a wonderfull video The sound is too low No way to up the volume can you fix?
Good evening Chloe, This is truly spectacular and you shine with joy, vitality and your face is simply radiant. You seem to have found your home in Scotland. God bless you always Chloe, Adele X
I love the vibe of your videos.
I can recommend my hometown of Kinross & loch leven for a adventure too x
How did you land up here??
Hi Chloe 😊 Been catching up on your videos, I think if there was ever an advert for Visit Scotland you’ve just made! A great selection of the sottish beaches, mountains and seasons. I’m sold! Hope you’ve been having a lovely summer adventuring.

Beautiful film Chloe I remember my first solo wild camp and it was very wild and I was a wee bit nervous and there was a dog that kept barking and I thought I was going to be caught as I wasn’t supposed to be there! I haven’t camped for 7 years and I can’t wait till I’m allowed to again! Not long to go now 😊
Thank you Phil! Gosh, I think your experience would have made me really nervous too, my biggest fear was being caught! I now live in Scotland and I feel so much more relaxed when out camping with right to roam. I hope you get to camp again soon and enjoy the freedom of it all!

Hello Cloe Rose, couldn't help but notice the long stemmed white fluffy (plume) plants that you see from the window. They look very much like our 'ToeToe' (AustrodriaToetoe) plant that is a native of NZ. There is the South American Pampas grass that looks like our 'ToeToe'. If it is 'ToeToe' (said as toytoy) then it is a good survival food, It is a distant cousin of the 'Sugarbeet' plant . If you follow the stem down to the root and cut the stem at its base you can chew it. It contains sugars and starches. Chew it and then spit out the fibers (only when the stem is green). The fluffy part can be wrapped in a handkerchief and used as padding on a wound. I am very surprised to see it in Scotland. It is one of hundreds that I instruct in the use of. Enjoyed the video ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀
That is so interesting... I'm not actually confident on it's ID myself. I am very weak on my flora, much better at fauna. I would have said Pampas grass, but only because that's the only plant I was aware of that looked like it... having looked up your ToeToe now, they look incredibly similar! It's not common at all here in Scotland, the only times I've seen it have been in gardens, so I think it must be an import people have planted themselves. Amazing to hear of all it's useful properties.... ethnobotany is something I would love to dedicate time to in the future. You must have such a wealth of knowledge (and such useful knowledge too!).
Hello Cloe Rose, just came across another one of your great videos. It is sad to see so much litter left behind, this not only mars the countryside but also takes away the feeling of isolation from the city. A very sad indictment on society. The carving on the tree is also sad to see, cutting the bark (which by the way never grows back) allows the entry of diseases and can kill the tree. It's nice to see that you are not a 'fair-weather' tramper, it's good to go out in all weathers, to feel the cheeks flush, the pace quicken, the excitement of the coming evening, the lips around the hot mug of tea, the bed under countless stars. Yes, this wild camping at its finest, from which one gains experience and a toughness of spirit and soul. The puff ball fungi were fun to watch, we have the birdcage fungi over here, it snaps off in the wind and rolls along the ground dispensing its spores. Sorry, that on this trip you never got to see the snow but judging by your comments about 'feeling the cold' perhaps it was a good thing. Over here some of our mountain ranges have eternal snow but that can be a challenge to get to. Well, that's all from me, enjoyed the video, ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀
It is very sad isn't it. I find it's even sadder when you consider the complexity that it was actually a sign that young people had been choosing to spend time in nature and outdoors, which is so rare these days (at least, where I live), yet when they do, they seem to have no respect or manners towards the environment... albeit, I can't really blame them, as it is definitely more a reflection back on society itself and the world they have been brought up in. I've been back to that spot since, to clear it up, and actually found all the rubbish gone. I don't know who cleaned it up, but it was a lovely gesture. Yes you are right, I felt disappointed about the lack of snow at the time, but perhaps it saved me from a worse fate! I definitely need to upgrade my kit for next winter if I want to try colder camping again. All the best 😀
Hey Chloe. Great video and fair play for the solo camp. I’m trying to be a big brave boy and go for my first solo camp. I have done lots of wild camping with friends but never on my own but I think it will be a whole new experience to go alone. As a 40+ year old man I have no excuses and will use your video as motivation to just go and do it and stop making excuses! All the best.
Hey Andy, thanks for taking the time to watch and chat.... my feelings and experiences before this camp so strongly mirror your own! It definitely is a whole new experience. I found it more vulnerable and uncomfortable... but also a lot more freeing and rewarding. It's rare that we have time to spend alone with just ourselves, especially in nature when there are so few distractions. Solo camping isn't for everyone and I really like camping with others still, but I just felt like I had to give it a try and see what I thought of it for myself. I also tried making every excuse under the sun! Eventually, I just ran out of them so had to go 😂 If you do end up doing one, please let me know, I'd love to know how it goes!
So beautiful Chloe, thank you for sharing. I love doing similar things. Inspiring, beautiful, honest video, 🙏❤️☺️ umesh
Thank you Umesh! It's always lovely to hear from likeminded people. There's nothing like spending time in nature is there :)
This is the third video of yours i have watched since this morning. I can sympathise with you in the cod temperatures, I almost started to shiver myself. Thanks for taking the time to produce another must watch video. Take care.
Hey Dave! Yes... the cold was definitely not my friend this time around. I think I'll need to upgrade my gear for next winter if I want to try that again. I like to camp because it's fun, but this was swinging the other way! All the very best to you :)
This is the 2nd video of yours I have seen and I'm glad I took the time to watch it. You have such a pleasant way of presenting them. I shall search for your'e other videos and I hope you do end up in your'e dream place someday. Thank you for the peaceful entertainment.
Thank you so much Dave! I am so glad you enjoyed it. I think this was one of my favourite camps... it always tends to help when its warm and sunny I find! Hopefully one day places like that will be in my backyard. Thank you for taking the time to watch :)
Thank you for the video, that was a good spot to pitch up tent. I've done 1 solo wild camp back in July 2019 in a field away up in the hills behind Clyde Muirshiel Country Park. I was uncomfortable doing it, at night time it was so unbelievably dark, however I got a wee fire going. I'm planning on doing another one this summer, and I've got my eye on Galloway Forest Park, I've never been there before, it's so large, so I'm on Google Maps a lot trying to figure out a decent spot. Will probably take a drive down there in the next month or 2 to scout the place out. If anyone's been to Galloway Forest Park, please let me know of any good spots, thank you
Thank you - it was a good spot in the end, but I felt quite uncertain walking in that'd I'd find a good spot. Like you, I often feel really uncomfortable wild camping so in the past when camping alone I usually know in advance where I am going to camp like you're trying to do for Galloway Forest Park. The less unknowns the better I feel! I also find the more concealed I am the safer I feel. I hope you find a good spot and have an enjoyable camp when you do head out... when everything goes well and you feel comfortable, wild camping is such a magical and freeing experience.
Hello Cloe Rose, as you say, it's not just the walking, but the mental aspect of the trip that is more important. To be among the trees the fresh air, the wide-open spaces or confined by the dense under growth. Yes, there is more to tramping, that's just the means of getting there. In my case it is coming across a circle of stones that once held a fire in place, who's ashes long since gone cold, the laughter that was had around it, since faded and stilled, the long old rotten log that was once a seat for those warming themselves around the dancing flames. All this in a remote place in the vast forest. I can let my imagination run wild. I may never return to these places, but I have the memory of them, and this is what those who wish to remain house bound, but are capable of doing, are missing out on. Once the outdoor bug bites, it is impossible to resist the call of the mountains. May I ever answer to that 'Siren call'. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀
You capture it in words so well. I love the idea of being so connected to the history and stories of the landscape, and being able to reach back through time 'just' through walking. It really is a siren call. And the more you answer, the louder it gets each time calling you back. I can't even think what I used to do with my spare time now, if not being outdoors!
Hello Cloe Rose, nothing wrong with picking up your trail mix out of the dirt. You have probably heard of the '4 second rule'. well overhear we say the '4-day rule', if the rats haven't got it or the possums, then it's good to go. 🤣🤣. Food is at a premium when you're out for 3-4 days. Many a time I have dropped my dinner on the hut floor and just scooped it up, taken out the dirty bits and consumed it like nothing had happened. Some of the forest huts here are so remote you can leave your food on the shelf and come back in a months' time and it will still be there. I just got back last night from a hut that has very few visitors a year. the logbook was started in 2007 it is only a third of the way through. It is set in among 1000-year-old trees, and is at an altitude of 1100m, you would just love it. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀
I've heard of the 4 second rule - never the 4 day rule, but I like it a lot! 🤣 Very good to hear I'm in good company, I've also scooped up a few trail dinners. 1000 year old trees... I can only imagine the atmosphere that place must hold. Every time I talk to you, you increase my urge to come to NZ. Scotland's equivalent to your forest huts are bothies, and I hope to visit a few this year. I'll get over to your island one day!
Aww, it's great to see you back on UA-cam again Chloe. Loved this video so much as Scotland is my happy place and seeing it through your eyes has made me want to go back again very soon. We were up in the Cairngorms last October for a week and will be back up to Kinlochleven in April. It can't come soon enough. x
Thank you Alex 😊 I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. I can really relate to how you feel, it's become my happy place too, it really is food for the soul. Going to Kinlochleven sounds amazing... I've only been to that area once, but I absolutely loved it. So beautiful (but then again, where in Scotland isn't!). I hope time doesn't go too slowly for you, and that April swings around soon!x
Loved this Chloe. Great to see you back, hope you're well.
Thanks Andy! I am very well thank you, just been taking a lot of time to recharge (which has involved a lot of time outdoors!). I hope you're well too... and bet you're looking forward to your trip to Kinlochleven. Such a special area.
