Atheist Women: Why so few? What Does the Research Say?
Why are there so few women atheists? What do current studies reveal about this disparity? Is this phenomenon attributable to biological, psychological or social factors, and what implications does it have for the secularization of society? Also, why do men tend to abandon religion or adopt atheism at a considerably higher rate than women?

I'll give the award to Meslier simply because he did his letters postumaly wich is a checkmate to the foxhole argument. As atheists we have a hard time understanding how important this is, but him denying god in death should be more meaningfull to religious people than any of us denying in life because christians have a really hard time accepting 100% atheism. Meslier not only blasphemed he found a way to do it in death, the ultimate challenge to god's supposed power over him. It's a brilliant move I wish I could have met this man, thanks for introducing me to his work.

Women got the right to vote in America, and the first thing they pushed through was Prohibition -- because alcoholism had become pandemic among men after the Civil War and the expansion of distilled spirits. Women rarely drank -- so the problem was 90% alcohol and men. And let's face facts: Men are Beasts. Rape, Murder, Robbery, Assault -- 9 times out of 10. it's a Male. Women were kept in harems long ago, and bred to please the Sultans. Old wives tales began in tents used for separation during menstruation.

In 1958, Oklahoma, my mother owned a brick-and-mortar barber shop. She had her own bank accounts and a purse full of credit cards. It was a matter of whether a woman had her own reliable source of income. Even Martha Washington was shown to have her own bank accounts because she owned property and slaves separate from George. Banks have never turned away reliable business, but women traditionally didn't have their own sources of income, and typically if they did work, they got married and quit their jobs or merged their incomes with their husbands. The laws did not permit banks to go after husbands for their wives debts, so those were high risks for banks. It depended on the individual bank and how well that bank trusted that particular woman's personal resources.

@@religiologEng the fact I can't get my tunes tied and I'm not even religious. Mercy Clinics in Missouri denied me my tubal because the people who own the clinics are catholic and think I should pop out as many kids as I can. Fun fact, my body doesnt want more babies either, I've had four miscarriages in the past year and a half and I'm almost 30 with a child. The ONLY reason they don't help me is because of THEIR religion. Freedom of Religion has been overstepping for years with overreaching policies that are borderline Christian. And this is not a Christian nation no matter how much yall pray and hope for it because it never was Christian and it'll never be Christian. Theocracy is beyond inhumane and is basically another form of a dictatorship. As someone who had to deconstruct from this religion themselves, growing up a young girl in church, I seen and heard it all. It was never about love or acceptance, it's all about control. God, then Husband, then wife, then children. The famous umbrella rule of Christianity literally outlines a hierarchy, in which women are not equal to men and children are even less so. Wake up and actually look at what you support, it's disgusting and overall does more harm than good.

5:30 - there's nothing amazing about a translator who distorts someone else's writing to push their own agenda. There is no excuse for it. It's a form of censorship. I don't care if you think it's for a good cause. The author's actual message is not permitted to be seen. Instead, it is a distortion of their message. It's no different from Christians who deliberately rewrite passages in the Bible like adding an entire verse in the Bible to justify their doctrine of the Trinity. They wanted to conceal the truth that their holy book didn't back up their interpretation so they changed it to suit them. Even if Darwin was an atheist, The Origin of Species did not promote atheism then neither should its translation.

To my understanding, she added a preface and some notes, she didn't change the main text. It's quite common for translators or other people to add notes & prefaces in when a book is translated, and as long as it's clear that it's written by them I see no problem. Also, according to Wikipedia at least, she seemed to have been in contact with Darwin and he knew she was going to add some notes and wasn't against it, albeit he later critisised some of the additions for not being scientifically accurate.

Everyone making intentional choices always pay a cost. If you are a career person and generally not religious you pay the cost in what you miss out on , Children, adult heirs with strong core values, even having any heirs at all. But you have secular benefits in the form of material possessions. Very religious people may also not have heirs because of having liflelong spiritual focus which leaves no room for children and marriage. Others, like my wife and I ( married for more than 31 years) split the difference somewhat , we have grown children and more than typical material wealth and income but also are likely to be in the top 10% in religious devotion. The price we have payed is , we wish we had been more religious with more children and perhaps less material wealth as the trade off. Some of our brethren have no children and no real estate or major possessions and live a semi nomadic life ( which is appealing to those who like to always travel and volunteer the majority of their time in service to others) the cost is that they will have no material wealth ( or some of the worries that come with it) and produce no heirs. The psychological and real benefits which they have and we to a,lesser extent are a sense of freedom , a strong congregational support structure , a global brotherhood with friends in every land, ( on the rare occasions when my wife and eye can afford to travel we often are guided by expatriates in foreign lands from among our brothers and sisters) even staying in their homes, and the promise of God that whatever may happen in our lives we will see immortality and paradise and even greater wonders as a reward. It’s really a cost , benefit analysis no matter the road you choose to take.

My observation is that a young woman who is Atheist typically becomes religious later in life as her prettiness ( and the influence and power it brings ) fades. When , in times past, women had less social power they where even more likely to find the power that religious structures gives. Today, with women having more social power than ever they tend to behave as Atheist even when belonging nominally to a church. The result has been devastating to the nuclear family.

Very simple, women are more intelligent than men. I say that as a man.

GMS sent me here! :) Thx for the content you make. Thank you to all of the deceased atheist-adjacent people who were put to death or judged. It doesn't seem we've come far in some ways, but the ability to question your reality and your origin should be a right.

An opposing opinion here, from a Catholic man: why less Atheist women? Because they are 1. wiser than us men, and 2. more loving. 😽😎 👋

I think the issue isn't in that religion contradicts basic freedoms. If one looks at the Scnadinavian model, one can observe that religion in those countries has been adjusted to the current values of the society; for example in Sweden women can not only preach, but take high ranking positions, and homosexuality is accepted as a normal part of life to a point that we can find a lesbian bishop who is married and has an adopted kid (Gerd Eva Cecilia Brunne). I think this demonstrates that religion is what we make of it, and if in some other countries people discriminate others under the guise of church, it's a question of the people in charge of the church in that particular country and the government, who not only do nothing to change that situation, but endorse it.

The amazing thing is people who think they are smarter than people of faith out of some imagined mental superiority. The creator of this video need not worry that his vast intelligence has held him back.

As a women i find the notion women are weak, incapable and without power in society highly offensiv. And psychological and histrocially inaccurated. Some women foster this myth manly to avoid accountebility..that is a a form of female power/ toxic femininity.

Growing up in France, I came from a non-religious family. We weren’t even familiar with the concept of atheism. My French mother also came from a non-religious background, going back several generations, I believe. It wasn’t until much later that I learned my Dutch father was religious-Lutheran, according to my mother, who mentioned it once! Strangely enough, both my Dutch grandparents were also non-religious. As far as I can remember, the environment in France where I grew up was largely secular. When we moved to the Netherlands in 1970, I was surprised to find that most people there were either Catholic or Protestant. However, nowadays, most of the people I know who were once religious no longer are. What I find interesting is that many people who grew up with religious beliefs, even if they no longer practice, still hold onto certain superstitions. Having been raised without any form of mysticism, my mind remains free of such influences.

Chiming in as an agnostic woman: seeing as religious systems have failed my gender the world over, and that many of their care functions have been subsumed by different organizations and experiences (e.g. food banks, nursing homes, hospitals, the awe from nature), it's been difficult for me to see religion as true or faith as beneficial to my life. Does it help if it's the same people over and over? Maybe. Might it be because I'm neurodivergent and can't really imagine a sentient being playing with us like poker chips? Maybe. But if the poker chips are Also, a combination of psychotherapy and learning about stochastic processes has helped me come to terms with bad things happening and how to make the best of them. Witnessing our own human processes have godlike power (as a collective) and awe fulfills the endorphin generating niche as well. Regarding social consequences - OH BOY. I can't exactly tell my fellow South Asian diaspora friends that I'm atheist. In fact, the stereotype of India being particularly spiritual checks out because of the marked lack of people who identify as agnostic or atheist because they grew up with particular faith traditions and those are reinforced in public or school holidays (especially Hindu). I'm the kind of atheist that's the patriarchy's worst nightmare: overeducated, overthinking, overweening atheist cat lady.

Well, the two most prominent atheists in America (in the mid to late 20th centuries) -- Madelyn O'Hair and Ayn Rand -- were both women.
