The Cokey-est Super-Team EVER.
Andrea Romano, Justice League Unlimited's voice director, has always credited her success with the fact that she brings her voice actors together in the same room to record their parts. Unlike most cartoon voices, which are recorded separately, she has each script recorded like a live radio drama -- if you see them talking on-screen, then they were talking in real life.
And trying to imagine the sweaty trio of Jeremy Piven (Elongated Man), Tom Sizemore (Metamorpho) and Jerry O'Connell (Captain Marvel) all sitting in some dark room waiting for the red light to come on, I gotta ask, "Just how big *was* that tray of coke waiting for them?"

Paul McCartney Has Become the Dana Carvey Impression of Himself

Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles. Love 'em! But there's something so very, very satisfying about watching someone who isn't *quite* as talented he thinks he is turning into self-parody. If an artist's really talented like Tom Waits, or Prince then that aggressively purposeful "cartoonification" can be a little sad; I gots no desire to see someone embarrass themselves by doing an impressio...
The Cuckold Fantasies of Captain Daryl Dragon

Oh, the terrible joy of watching The Captain & Tennille. I'm too young to remember anything about them during their 1970's heyday ('75-'79?), but I've heard them on classic rock/easy listening radio enough to appreciate their goofy, surprisingly transgressive pop culture presence. They kinda sounded like some talented nerds who heard Fleetwood Mac and said "Amateurs, here's what coked up feel-g...
Negative Man on Fringe. It's the Doom Patrol!
Переглядів 7 тис.13 років тому
With Fringe on hiatus, I thought I'd re-watch some old episodes and spackle those holes in my knowledge of the show's deep, DC comics-inspired backstory. I've written before about the preponderance of DC superheroes and supervillains that keep making cameos. From the Crisis on Infinite Earths plotlines to the WW2 super-speedsters, this show is 100% about the old DC multiverse. Sure, string theo...

Animal Farm is terrifying to children, everyone else.
Переглядів 55 тис.13 років тому
Let me present to you the little-loved 1999 live-action Animal Farm. Stripped free of all allegory and attendant connotations (Stalin and Lenin, etc.) this well-dissected story becomes exactly what George Orwell originally subtitled it: a fairy-tale. A traumatizing fairy-tale of animal buchery, starring a cast of British Whore Actors straight out of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, marketed t...
Ray Charles channels a demon!

I love Ray Charles, don't get me wrong, and I think 'Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music' is a stone classic. But this cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire"' sounds pretty middle-of-the-road. Charles had been doing R&B covers of old country songs for a dozen years when this aired on the Flip Wilson Show. It's a nice cover. Sooooo.....at the very end, things get weird. Minute 2:20 has Cha...
Max Headroom predicts ringtones

I'm not going to go into Max Headroom's long list of futuristic gadgets and ideas that came to fruition (and they are legion), but I will give you this little peek into how prescient the show was. In the below clip from the UK version, Edison Carter lets himself into his new partner's apartment to sleep off a near-death experience. As he enters her place, we hear her tv prattling in the backgro...
Tony Randall as the Riddler for "Batman 3"
Переглядів 2,8 тис.14 років тому
Michael Caine's already been quoted saying that filming on Chris Nolan's Batman 3 starts next April, so let's start with some dream casting. For me, I'd like to see the Riddler. Unlike the goofy, annoyingly preening Frank Gorshin version, or the sycophantic Jim Carrey version, the definitive Riddler for me is the one from Batman: The Animated Series. Once described as "the world's meanest sissy...

I've long believed that JJ Abrams might be a one-trick pony: The big twists in 'Fringe' (the "Walternate" universe), 'Lost' (the flash-sideways) and his 'Star Trek' re-boot (Spock Prime travels backwards in time, creating an alternate universe for everybody in Starfleet Academy) are all based on some pretty well-known ideas from the Pre-Crisis days of DC comics. From the late 1950's up until 19...

Like millions of other nerds, I think Sam Raimi's 'Evil Dead' movies are like the best kind of comfort food. They're filled with violence, time travel, zombies, HP Lovecraft, chainsaws, Three Stooges comedy, demons and Bruce Campbell, the most iconic chin to never wear the big red S. So it was with a little surprise and a lot of gleeful recognition that I saw this episode of the DCAU's 'Justice...
Hulk Vs. Thor in Marvel's *FIRST* ever team-up!
Переглядів 32 тис.14 років тому
Back in the late 80's it was like a dream come true: The Incredible Hulk was coming back, in a two hour movie event featuring a cross-over with Thor! I remember waiting and waiting and waiting for this to finally air, and being...conflicted at what I saw. Thor didn't *become* a separate person once Dr. Donald Blake struck the hammer Mjolnir. He *was* Blake. Like Banner hulking out, this should ...

This is the opening to an episode of the Ray Bradbury Theater titled 'The Happiness Machine.' I love old talk and variety shows the way today's kids love reality tv and American Idol. When I was younger, before everything found its way onto the interwebs, I used to go to the Museum of TV & Radio in New York for this stuff. The Lone Gunmen predict 9-11!

The Lone Gunmen were always my favorite recurring characters on the X-Files. Mulder was kind of douchey and Scully was a wet blanket, but the three conspiracy buffs in the background were always, always, good for a laugh. Creator Chris Carter's attempts to spin-off something (anything!) from his cash cow weren't very successful, and he had another misfire in the one-season wonder that was The L...

I had just moved to Jackson, Tennessee in the summer of 1989. I had come from Dallas, Texas and got on the ground floor with a major promotion and salary increase to help start up a new manufacturing concern. At the time, I did most of my grocery shopping at a store just a bit south of Interstate 40, just a few minutes drive from my apartment. One day, I got in line at the store, behind two other shoppers. A lady getting checked at the register had some sort of problem, that took a long time to get resolved. The shopper directly ahead of me, was stooped over leaning on the push bar of his shopping cart. He was getting a bit exasperated because of the delay, and he stood up, turned his head to me, and shook his head. That irritated shopper was Carl Perkins himself. I recognized him immediately, but I did not say a word. I just shook my head the same as he did, acknowledging the delay was eating at both our times on this earth. He turned back, and by this time the checker was ready for Mr. Perkins. The checkout lady knew who he was too, but just apologized for the delay. Later I learned his house was just a very short distance from the store, so he was probably a regular customer. I guess it seemed strange to me that a music star with worldwide fame shopped for groceries just like I did.

A couple of years or so before 9/11, I had a very vivid dream. I was really high in the air above this vast city with nothing but buildings stretching to the horizon. I was looking down at these two buildings, both identical and both much taller than the rest. Each one was in flames, burning from about the middle. Most dreams I have I usually forget - not this one. When 9/11 happened, I immediately remembered this dream, and it scared the hell out of me. It still makes me wonder to this day.

oooo ooooo Doctor.... We want the Doctor!!!! My brother and I hired this from the video shop when we were young teens.. Had no idea about the subject matter but it was Dan akroyd and rated M so Mum probably thought it can't be that bad. I really don't remember much about the movie, except this part, only because of the Doctor chant. It made me and my brother pee our pants laughing... we couldn't help but always say it for about a week. Was reminising about this and Cactus Jack, these obscure films from the 80s with uber famous stars that kids today will never probably know about or ever see... This is what Gen-X means when we say we were truly the last free generation. It was the last time that the bottom line was in full control of the entertainment industry, and risks were taken for the sake of alchemical art. I honestly blame Fred Durst and Osama... Those 2 wreaked a synergistic energy that sucked the fun out of it all...
