Animal Farm is terrifying to children, everyone else.

  • Let me present to you the little-loved 1999 live-action Animal Farm. Stripped free of all allegory and attendant connotations (Stalin and Lenin, etc.) this well-dissected story becomes exactly what George Orwell originally subtitled it: a fairy-tale. A traumatizing fairy-tale of animal buchery, starring a cast of British Whore Actors straight out of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, marketed towards the family-friendly "Charlotte's Web" crowd.
Among its crimes:It changed the original ending of the book, pulling a fast 180 in the last 2 minutes. It was The Hallmark Channel's first original movie, but plays like the more demented scenes from "Summer of Sam." It took a full year to shoot and create the tangy mix of practical effects, trained animals and CGI polish. It cost 23 million dollars and lost approximately one zillion.
It is, without a doubt, one of the best worst movies ever.

Old Major is voiced by Peter Ustinov -- best remembered as the voice of Prince John from Disney's Robin Hood.

How wet the end of that pig's nose is kinda grossed me out. Real pigs' snouts are not usually that wet. The filmmakers wanted to make the visual implication here that that pig had a very runny snotty nose 😣.

@@Dylan-Hooton, I know you're not asking me, but Frankatron probably isn't going to respond to you because his comment was posted 6 years ago. And I'm pretty sure I know the answer, he probably meant the lead pig in this video who gave the speech about all humans being the enemy. He was creepy looking. And he's giving a speech about how they're all going to be slaughtered and saying humans are the enemy.

@@alvexok5523You mean Old Major? Well, his breed is the British Middle White in this film. The book from 1945 doesn’t really specify the breed Major is, but something from the Book AND the 1999 live action film has for one of the pigs is that Napoleon is a Berkshire Boar. But his speech is supposed to cause the revolution later on, hence the reason why he’s like Karl Marx or Lenin.

I actually think the changed ending isn't too bad -- since it was made in the 90s right after the end of the USSR having a more hopeful ending makes sense in context. Though if we made one now I'm sure it would be very different...

The movie is great... yes it extended the story a bit and updated it a bit so as to extend the allorgy to today's Communist countries. But I think, if Arthur was living today, he would have done the same. It was still true to the book and the original message (as opposed to the 50's movie which sucked).
Oh and fables have ALWAYS been regarded as being made for children when in reality they where NEVER made for children - it's just that some adults are too stupid to get what it is really about.

i havent read or seen the story but i must disagree. my resurch has stated the epic allegory is still very much intact. its dark and dramatic and shot ironicly in the style of babe. parents were just dumb enough to think this was for kids. and sadly the changed ending is justified because it was made in 99 almost a decade after the cold war ended and the ussr fell. so in a weried way, it does it all the more justice. NOW THE CHANGED ENDING TO THE MOVIE MADE IN THE 50S HAD NNNNOOO SUCH EXCUSE.

yeah im sloppy like that. sorry shruggs. but i made my point didnt i? ive seen the trailer and it doesnt hide the vicousness of the plot and this scene represents everything about good alagory. majors speech istrue and thought pervoking. about how they are only fed what they need to work. i love the goats line "i thought i was free". i also like that mare's thought, 'who would brush/braid my hair?' thats exactly what id think a horse would think. after years of being treated like that of course-

That's probably because you didn't see it as a little kid. I never did either, but I can understand i guess that the talk about getting slaughtered and humans being the enemy could scare a little kid. And it really resembles real life because sheep and pigs really do fear slaughter and with the way they often get treated in real life and going to slaughter has made these animals petrified of humans.

    • @adairroberto2188

All the talk from the animals about having to face their own slaughter, and how it mirrors real life because of animals really being slaughtered. But I'm sure not all kids have gotten scared by this movie, you were one who didn't get scared by this movie when you were a kid.

Now you were getting to me. Oh, and you know that Barnyard: The Original Party Animals is loosely based on the book Animal Farm, with the coyotes replacing the humans as the enemies of the animals, and Dag the Coyote being similar to Napoleon the Pig, since they are the main antagonists of both the book and film and being leaders? (However, Napoleon was not defeated in the book, altought he was defeated in the 1954 and 1999 films.)

Exactly how is this movie stripped of all allegory and reduced to a simple fairy tale? I watched this movie before reading the book and had never even heard anything about the book other than it was about animals mad at farmers. Yet right away while watching this movie I could see the story of Soviet Russia and Communism and how the downfall of every regime starts with greed. I think it's a pretty good adaptation. When were Patrick Stewart, Kelsey Grammar, and Pete Postlethwaite in HP or LotR?
