    The Votadini were a Latin speaking tribe in Scotland which migrated to North Wales and remained a distinct culture there until 1282. Many North Welsh are the descendants of the Roman British who spoke a Latin dialect until the 1300s.

    Gildas was not Anglo-Saxon nor did he write about Vortigern centuries later. He was born in late 5th-early 6th Century.

    The Gorddoficau in North Wales were called Ordovices by the Romans, just as they called the indomitable Essyllwyr Silurians, and the glorious Wenyllon the Venicones. Oh, and we Brythons were not and have never been celts!

    Not Picts ,the southern tribes of Caledonia were still under some limited relationship with the Romans who continued to operate certain forts north of the wall with very large cavalry patrol groups ,some were in their employ and were paid in silver. .Pictish groups spoke a different language although Brittonic and had distinctive tribal design not found in the south.The south was more populated than previously thought . If tribes really pissed the Romans off they would engage in genocide as is seen in Fife and Angus where the tree record shows that farmland became wilderness for decades after the Romans had finished with them Consequently when the Romans left these tribal areas did not become pict land and were in opposition such as altcluid which became Strathclyde

  • @David-mo5jw
    @David-mo5jw 17 днів тому

    Their not picts, the picts were north of the Forth who the Romans attempted genocide . The romans appear to have tolerated the southern tribes as at the end of the romans they had independent Brittonic kingdoms who were hostile to the Picts but also were able to resist the Anglo Saxons

    The Silures is a Roman name for the glorious, unbeaten Essyllwyr. The Welsh name for the Severn estuary and its neighbouring country was Bro Essyllt, Essyllwg, Syllyr, and or Silwria in later prehistory. This riverine district was anciently known and distinguished by the names ‘Syllwg’ or ‘Essyllwg’, ‘Tir Essyllt’, and ‘Gwlad yr Essyllt’ which are all strictly synonymous, and which included the whole of the present counties of Glamorgan and Monmouth and a part of those of Hereford, Gloucester and Brecknock. Their inhabitants were accordingly called ‘Syllwr’, ‘Essyllyr’, ‘Essyllwr’ or ‘Essyllwyr’.

    I am Y-DNA Haplogroup DF63 which they state this Insular Celt L-21 is found most numbers of this Cornwall area yet many of my lines are from Gododdin and Southern Rheged yet show many from Earls of Lennox first Earls DF63 before the Stewards took over the Earls of Lennox DF13. Many Kingdom of Strathclyde have the Damnonii of Alt Clud Y Hen Ogledd many Kingdoms two which I just mentioned which the Kingdom of Rheged became Welsh Kings of Gwynedd and Deheubarth. Do you have list of the Y-DNA of this tribe - there are a good Y-DNA reult of Southwest England that does show my Cornwall link with DF63 the brother of DF13. I have genealogy to the Gruffydd Kings of Deheubarth of the Royal House fo Dinefwr - but trying to understand this Cornwall link.

    From maps i have seen, the territory of the Belgae, more closely covers the area of Wiltshire rather than Hampshire; hence why Bath would be within their orbit. Likewise, winchester is on the boarder of wiltshire (it would also coincide with other comments made, namely Belgae coins found on the south coast. Anyway, thats what the maps and charts i have seen online depict.

    Living a couple of miles from the Wrekin and having walked up it a few hundred times you can see why the Cornovii made it their capital. A relatively flat landscape besides the hill itself. With views supposedly of 17 counties. No one was going to sneak up on you without knowing.

    The main reason the Romans succeed was because Britain wasnt ruled by one king with one army , it was divided into a lot of smaller kingdom's & a lot of tribes/ kings were allied with Rome. Verica allowed them to unload their ships in his area , the remains of his villa shows how well rewarded he was. Even the Iceni allied themselves with Rome ,proving Boudicca wasn't anti Roman . Their uprising had nothing to do with saving Britain It was just revenge, an angry woman who didn't get everything the Romans promised her..

    I understand them taking the gold/silver but for a people who considered themselves ( and they were) fearsome warriors. Had no issues with Slaughtering so many old feeble unarmed monks. It must've been like killing Children. I know it's impossible to put ourselves in the same mindset But I can't imagine i would've enjoyed or felt like a warrior after doing that . The treasure, yes I great days work. But the rest ,, hmm

    Do you think Caratacus ruled the ordovices? We know he left Herefordshire & went to Wales after the Roman invasion & surrender of the Celts inc his tribe the Catuvelauni. We know he lead attacks with the Welsh & his loyal catuvelauni warriors . He obviously had status and respect But surely they alread had a cheiftan, Tbh I don't know anything about the welsh tribes I don't know any names of rulers . Living in Stalbans ( verulam) capital of the Catuvelauni, they were the first I started to read, learn about. His ( Caratacus) coins are found locally and within the territory they ruled . Obviously his coins ceased to be minted after the invasion. But I wonder if he took any ( not to spread his name) to Wales, he would've needed silver and I assume he would've had time to return to verulam, to collect weapons , armour , silver before going west. It would be very interesting to know if any metal detectorists have found any of his coins in that area..

    I guess the Iceni had to learn how to build trackways from the moment they arrived . The land is flat and low and very wet , to the north the wash and to the west a large area was weltland/ marshland Obviously the coastal side was boggy marshland. Even today there are only 2 rises large enough for proper towns, Norwich and Ipswich. They would have needed trackways across the wetlands to link up the small iron age villages. Although they are one of the first to mint coins and they are known for their golden neck torcs, they obviously had some wealth. The main thing they had plenty of was a variety of sea foods People seem to attach oysters with Romans But iron age sites are full of oyster shells & obviously liked their sea & fresh water food too!

    I'll just paste what i wrote in a comment earlier today, - "I suppose what i've been seeing recently is people of the so called 'celtic nations' identifying with that Celtic past and ancestry (fair enough) but almost to the exclusion of the English, who also have a Celtic past. So a young Scots woman the other day saying how modern Scots culture is 'Celtic' but English isn't ... that it's Anglo Saxon. This is so black and white ... so polarising. I see that Scots, Irish, Welsh and English culture is an evolution of many influences, one of those being Celtic and one being anglo saxon. The Scots also being largely affected by both Anglo Saxon and Danish/Norse poulations. (apparently many Scots have up to 30% Anglo Saxon dna) It is known that a very large percentage of English have largely 'Celtic' or Ancient Briton DNA and usually upto 40% Anglo Saxon DNA, - Sure, there are some people particularly in the East and South East who have a much higher percentage of Anglo Saxon dna. I hesitate to define modern culture by the names of the people of a bygone era when so much has changed since. We've had a Norman invasion since the Anglo Saxons and other outside influences have been huge, i mean both the Anglo Saxons and the Normans were very much copying the trends and technologys of Europe ... Rome, the Franks also a huge Influence. Scotland and Wales and also Ireland became very 'continental'. So the young Scots woman the other day i accused of cherry picking. I understand how she sees it but what she's not understanding is that modern Scots culture is not simply Celtic but an evolution of a bunch of influences which include Celtic. However she was one of those Scots i think who like to claim a Celtic identity to differentiate themselves from the English. - Trouble is, that stance denies the English their own Celtic identity."

    Just wondering why you're using your Toyota sewing machine to store a can of Heinze Scotch Broth? 😂On another more relevant note, many of my ancestors from recent centuries have lived along the south coast from Totnes/Kingsbridge/Slapton in Devon to Saltash and Liskeard in Cornwall, as have a number of ancestors going back further, and tracing, through Alfred's royal line, back to kings of Dumnonia/Cornwall around 300ad. Much of my dna profile is described as Wales (perhaps this translates to 'ancient Briton' i don't know) however another large part of my dna is described as 'Northern France/Southern England' and i wonder if this also translates to 'ancient Briton'? In any case i wouldn't be at all surprised if many of my ancient ancestors were Dumnonii.
