Old Fort, NC Flood Damage | Hurricane Helene
Yesterday morning, Western North Carolina experienced one of the worst floods in history in the area. We ventured as far west as we could to continue documenting the impacts of Hurricane Helene, and made it to Old Fort, NC, before being turned back.
We continue to pray for the families of WNC and especially in the heart of the Nolichucky Gorge. After seeing photos from the area along former Clinchfield line, I would be willing to say the line won’t see a train for upwards of a year, and possibly never again.

Hickory, NC Area Flooding | Hurricane Helene
Переглядів 10 тис.4 години тому
Copyright: Blue Ridge Rails 2024 Earlier today, Western North Carolina was hammered with (at landfall) a category 4 tropical hurricane. Around 9:00 this morning, I set out around the Hickory area to document the impacts of this historical weather event. I tried to capture as many different places and events as possible, especially things related to high waters and flooding. Main places that we ...

We start out on the CN Yazoo Sub from Memphis to Jackson, then move south onto the CPKC/NS joint “Meridian Speedway” in Louisiana and Mississippi. Norfolk Southern Train Crashes Into Salsa Truck! Huge "Red" Mess!
I know the NS River Line up the FB got torn up bad too.
Any word on the state of Curtis Creek Rd?
Please God help everyone effected
I can only imagine how bad the mill creek old mountain road is. It's always prone to landslides. It's probably not even there anymore
What would happen next?
My worst fears realized. I well remember the gorge trackage being washed away in the 70’s in flooding not close to the levels of last week, and had little hope that it withstood the storm this time. The loss of life from this storm is already in the 60’s, but I’m concerned that the former Clinchfield might be among the final tally of fatalities. Coal was king in the 70’s, but in 2024 its nearly gone. Is there enough traffic over the line now to justify rebuilding it? And what about NS’s Asheville line? It’s all but dried up, and if it sustained major damage, I’d put it’s chances of being restored at close to zero! Thanks for answering my questions, and taking the time to produce these videos!
@@tomt9543 I think the Clinchfield line has a good chance of being rebuilt as we ran two pairs of mixed trains aswell as extra trains daily, totaling 5-7 movements. I’ve heard the starting cost is $150 million for the main damage. The Asheville district is almost just as bad, but NCDOT wants the line to Asheville for passenger service eventually so I doubt they’ll abandon it. As for west of Asheville, the bridge over the Holston river in Newport is totaled, meaning a complete replacement is needed for anything to run. Asheville is and will continue to be totally cut off from the national rail network for a good while.
@@blueridgerails Thanks for the update! I retired from NS in 2020 at Linwood, but all my former contacts have either retired, been furloughed, or quit, so I have no front line go-to’s anymore. It’d be interesting to see how far the raging waters carried the bridge spans from Poplar on the CRR, and if they’re retrievable or reusable!
Are the folks you interviewed for this OK?
@@fakecumberland Safe confirmation from everyone except Nick and Mary. We will be checking in tomorrow and letting everyone know.
I’m guessing that one view was a washed out railroad bridge? I’m very curious how the NS S line fared in this! The loops section has always been subject to unstable ground, and I can’t realistically think that everything there is AOK! Same for the former Clinchfield, especially through the Nolichucky Gorge! Do you have any info on either line?
@@tomt9543 the clinchfield is totally destroyed, check out our latest video on the CSX line.
Man... I'm speechless
@@WesleyEast-RRfan we’re all completely devastated.

Prayers for all whom live here. Hope everyone is ok. I have never seen anything like this here. I grew up here as a kid. Love this town.
Lifting up prayers for those impacted by this storm. May God be with them.
Heartbreaking. Sweet little Old Fort. Our hearts go out to you all. We’ll be back to strongly support the local businesses once the massive clean up effort is complete and we’re allowed back in!!!!
I can't get a hold of my elderly father who lives in Old Fort. Does anyone know if Old Catawba River Rd. was involved in the mudslides? You can see I40 from my dad's front porch. We need a phone number so we can locate our loved ones. I live in Texas. I've had zero luck being able to speak with anyone at the sheriff's office. Sending prayers to all.
I hope you're able to get some good news soon. There are a couple of suggestions for checking on people here: governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases/2024/09/28/rescues-completed-emergency-supplies-rushed-western-north-carolina-communities-hit-hurricane-helene

Can't get in touch with family in Old Fort. Does anyone have any info about loss of life or missing persons? Are there shelters for the displaced nearby ?
Lots of shelters are being put up in the area, no phone service for miles and miles…
Thank you !
My sister is from Old Fort and they took to Morganton.
I lived in Asheville on 2 separate occasions, 1998-2001 and 2012-2019. During the second stint, I learned about the flood of 1916 that hit the area. Earlier today I found out this flood was TEN FEET higher than the one in 1916. I have not heard from my son or daughter, who live in Canton where the Pigeon River runs through the middle of town. I have heard from a friend that lives in Asheville and his reply to my question: "Hey man, are you okay?" was simply, "Yeah, barely. TTYL". Ironically, back on the 18th that same friend invited me to visit as he would have his place to himself for a couple of days...the 26th/27th. I had to decline because I already had made plans 3 weeks ago to go to Hiawassee, GA, at the same time. I left my house here in Charlotte Wednesday morning and when I made a pit stop in Brasstown, SC, I found out the event in GA had been cancelled due to Helene. So I turned around and drove back to Charlotte and as soon as I got in the house I remembered about my friend's invitation. "Dang it" I thought, "I should have called him before I started back home to see if the invitation to visit him was still good!"...
For those of you who are unaware, this area has just been completely destroyed by record flooding. All funds from this video will go straight to help the town of Spruce Pine rebuild. Bad thing, I live here, a tree fell from neighbors Into our family’s yard it’s a foot away from the house, we kinda lucky :/
We hope everyone is okay!
We are, Thanks tho!
This would ultimately kill trains in Asheville. Asheville was destroyed like it was on the coast of Florida. Thankfully, I was in London, over in Great Britian!
The epic flood worse ever in Asheville, NC and mountains. Central North Carolina at my house in the rain gauge we got only 1 inch with some wind and that was it. Thanks for posting.
Oh, jeeze! That is terrifying! Please be safe!
We’re trying!
Hy the train ns heritage units 1065 crash into truck whats a crash 😢
Why would they shut this down! Makes no damn sense. I’ll bet it is because of that dumbass we have in office. Some many good things have closed because of them.
nice, what time should i get there to catch them?
I live here. The best thing we get is the train that runs at night every day with like 2 cars.

That's my home!!
Maybe they should have a private luxury train running from Chicago to Miami and back via the Clinchfield from Elkhorn City to Spartanburg similar to Rocky Mountaineer.
Welp, the WYNP stopped running the AC6000's. Probably headed off to be scrapped.
