When Sheffield had shops, community, a sense of belonging and we had a sense of where we came from and what our culture was. Now nothing.
Hard times, but people still had smiles on their faces , where has now , what's gone wrong .
You're born ,you live your life and then you pass , but the memories in these photos live on and on . Brilliant.
Fabulous video, 🙏
Golden egg = pancakes nearly every Saturday apart from when Wednesday were at home
Sad because not only the city looked better than now but the people all look far better off than they are today.
The light up map wouldn't last two minutes these days, but I remember it was there for many years. The GPO in Fitzalan Square was a lovely building, it even had a space for philatelists. I feel sorry for the man in hotpants if he is alive today! We used to call the Classic Cinema in Fitzalan Square: "The News Theatre" when I was a child my parents took me there regularly on a Thursday evening. There was another cinema near Cockayne's that had a lovely cafe in it.
Sad that the streets and city centre all look better looked after than they do today. How did we get from that to what we have now without noticing? It's not too late to get rid of the litter, the messy pavements and the appalling unregulated signs above the shops. Let's hope that the castle excavations breath some light into the city centre because, at the moment the city centre is the worst it has ever been. I was proud to show people around the city centre now I avoid taking them to it.
Great collection. The SCC are worse than the WW2 Germans
Interested in the banana sellers at Victoria Station as there was a man who was rich from importing bananas who lived in one of the big houses on Burngreave Road. He was known in the area as "The Banana King". Before my time but I was told about him as a child by someone who lived at Burngreave. It was around the 1920s and 1930s that I think he was there. Blaskey's wall paper shop brings back memories and evokes the smell of paper wallpaper not vinyl.
Fargate looks far better on these pictures than it does now. Whoever allowed the two vape shops that are there now to put up hideously ugly signs? Come to think of it, what were people thinking of letting vape shops open on that once attractive shopping street?! Glad to see the hole in the road once more.
I remember that Davy's in Fargate. The waitresses wore black dresses and white caps and aprons. The tables and chairs were cane but painted dark green. In the rag and tag market shown there was an amazing weighing scale for weighing people! Its seat was covered in red velvet and the weights were all polished brass. I wonder what happened to it after the market closed? I never saw it after that market was replaced by the Castle Market.
Nice to see that some of the trees are still in the same place as they were then, I wish more of them had not been needlessly chopped down. Wilson Peck brings back memories of piano lessons in the rooms above the piano shop and the creaking staircases that led up to them.
Simpler times,nowt lasts
that woodland one could well be a dam construction ,ladybower maybe
My Mum used to work in the milk bar at Silver Blades when it first opened and my sister worked at the Bowling alley! That was the 60s.
As a native of Sheffield South Yorkshire I'm disgusted with what has been done to the city No one has yet mentioned the bomb hole through the Wicker Arches the repair could be clearly be seen when I was a teenager in the 1960s
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Have you any photos of Meadowhead from Abbey Lane my wife tell me if was a narrow lane out of Sheffield that's why the trams terminated at Chantry Road Woodseats
Lane pic looks like Currie's wonder goal v West Ham. "Quality goal by a quality player"..
Beautiful thanks for sharing
Those flats at the bottom of Duke Street were called the Embassy Court Flats. The shops underneath were a chippy, a bit further up was a post office and Audrey Kinds Wool Shop.
I started at Malin Bridge school in 1943. I think the free milk was in 1/3 pint bottles. This was during the war when there was severe food rationing.
After one of the bombing raids, all the houses in our street had all the windows broken on blast side. A lot of the windows were then boarded up because there was no glass available.
The one with the woman standing in front of advertising hoarding on the stone wall, my first thought was Chesterfield Road just up from Woodbank Crescent, where the steps are ... ?
Thanks for posting these evocative pix, was wondering if that pic was taken at Heeley Station on the platform overlooking Chesterfield Road by Ponsford before the shop took up most of the block?
It could well be... We'd have to do some detective work
@@richardlilley6274 next time I'm down that way I'll count the windows!
@rubydazzler anything I can do to help?
@@richardlilley6274 I'll report back in a few days. I lived on Artisan View as a child, and remember the shop so well. Old Mr Ponsford gave me some carpet samples for my dollshouse, it was very posh!! :D
@@rubydazzlerhey up luv it sort of looks like it but isn't the white lions different? Could have changed tho in last 100 years
how times have changed in my home city, I love to see these old photos of Sheffield I was born in the 50's and i can remember when the last tram left depot and went straight into Tommy Wards scrap yard down at Carbrook. Thanks to all the people who supplied these photo's
There is some wonderful photos of Sheffield of the bygone era. How things have changed over the years, my grandma and grandad and my aunties and uncle's lived down Attercliffe well Carbrook. The photos are making me feel homesick as I haven't lived in Sheffield for over 18 years.
Beautiful thank you
Good pictures thanks mate
Nice work on this video thanks, loved the picture of moor with a traction engine in it and it's sweet to think it would still be welcome in the town centre as clean air exempt
Hi Kim, Can I please use a screenshot of Commonside from this video? I would like to post it on my photostream/album , unfortunately I can't provide a link due to UA-cam censorship. I will of course credit your video and post a link to it. Thanks for a fantastic channel, Roger.
4:51 that shop is now a private dwelling, like so many shops in the area. Take a walk down South Road and Heavygate Road and look for the lintels that once supported the walls above shop windows.
Cliff on the cliff
1:15 Tin Town by the reservoirs?
1:16 idk I am no expert but that harpers stores does not look like a 1904 store
Any pictures of Pond Street Nora?
Thank you for sharing much appreciated
Ah much the great Yorkshire war cry. My aunt Evelyn was a bus sonductress in Sheffield for a short time and her husband my uncle Jim was a bus driver she looks very much like her fromk the side ???
Makes you want to step into the photo for a while and say hello
Interesting, I was thinking about strolling the streets and viewing the architecture. It never crossed my mind to say hello. Lol
gosh 1911 train strike.... theyve been on strike along time still are lol nothings changed then eh
Think they ran on time back then when not striking
OMG the last bus home.... that when you could travel by bus for 10p and travel in safety without getting stabbed what whent wrong !!!
Ive loved looking at all the old photos of Sheffield are you still doing them Ill dig out some photos. I remember standinhg on High St waiting for the 52 bus home from work and the lady that used to stand outside the crazy daisy selling the Sheffield star newspaper every few seconds shouting "Late Night Star" and now all the crap steel comes from China for your knives and forks
Amazing that some of the old buildings are still in situ after all this time and look the same, wonder how many ghosts walk amongst the Sheffield people today ???
wow the cold outside loo and newspaper for loo roll Brrrrrr in the cold Sheffield winters. Simply the best for Sheffield steel that made your knives and forks and youre spoons to eat your suet puddings
I thought you were saying that, the cold outside loo and newspaper loo roll was simply the best for Sheffield 'steel',i.e, toughness, resilience, endurance. Lol Are you saying that Sheffield was the best for Sheffield steel?
Just think no social media / no mobile phones / no computers / more respect in school and at home and for the police. no fast cars
Just found these photos love them... wondering who these people were what type of life they led...i bet there are a few ghost stories on theses streets and what a tale they could tell facinating thanks for posting them. Are there any of burngreave road and the old police station (we lived in that old station in the late 50's)
I have loved looking at the Photos of Sheffield it has brought back many Happy Memories of My Childhood and Teenage Years . Thank You.❤❤❤😂😂😂
Makes me think of grandma. Xxx
Evokes such Special Memories. 😂
