Crossing Moreton Bay on a Foil
Переглядів 2,7 тис.Місяць тому
I've been wanting to this ever since I started downwinding. Tibby rang me the in the morning and we made the decision at 9am and we were on the road by 10am. It was an hour drive down to our take off location. We packed light - only a fresh set of clothes for the other end. This was one of the most fun days DWding I've ever done and highly recommend any other locals to give it a go when you can.
Small Foil Heavy Fella Downwinding. On foil review of the Code Foils 770R
Переглядів 3,1 тис.2 місяці тому
I've been blown away by how easy I can paddle up the smaller R series foils in the Code Range and how much low end they have whilst still having great top end! At the end of this run I decided to test the limits of the foil and flat water pump across a bay with a straight cross shore wind. Needless to say I was impressed. Whole setup was the 770R with the Medium Fuse 135R and a 75cm Mast Amos B...
The Tow Boogie is So FUN

I've had this thing for almost 2 months now and put it through it's paces. I've learnt a lot, made some mistakes and caught some epic waves thanks to the boogies chip ins. Mark, the creator of the boogie, is a total legend to work with and I thank him for giving me one to review and discuss. At the time of posting he's taking pre orders for the next batch. This is one of those products that jus...
Stoked to be Joining Code Foils!

No Surprises here. Most of the comments were spot on. I've joined the code team and absolutely loving the feel of the foils I'm excited to share my quiver in an upcoming video and my Hawaii preparations. Also, note that all the riding in the Amos Team Shoot and the tow boogie video upcoming were on the 850s.

My Time with Axis has come to an end. I'm so grateful for the support Axis has shown me as a rider and creator. It's allowed me to test lots of different products to show you all. It's allowed me to invest in camera gear rather then foils and work less in order to produce quality content. My particular thanks to Adrian, my friend. He believed in what I was doing really early on and saw value in...
A Guide to Downwinding with FoilDrive
Переглядів 6 тис.3 місяці тому
Hi Guys - In this video you'll find some tips and a technique guide on using Foildrive Specifically in the bumps. Sorry for the corrupt clip at the beginning. The Gen2 foildrive is a great way for so many people to get into downwinding who are older, time restricted, injured or just not keen to tackle to horribleness of the learning curve that's unique to Downwind SUP. With the Foildrive you re...
Foiling on the Amos Sultan Prone, UHM AXIS Mast and Foildrive. The best combo!

I asked my wife to reluctantly come down and shoot me for 15 minutes. In that time I caught about 20 waves from out back and fell a few times in there. I pulled the best waves from this very short session. Classic 10 knot easterly wind which would make normal prone sooooo difficult and a very tightly packed longboard crowd on the point that you can't really get amongst without getting in troubl...

Lessons: from the Sydney Foil Downwind Race

If you want the best wrap up of the whole go check out Josh Ku's channel. In this video I share my key take aways from the race and how I could've done better. And even question whether I want to race? With Hawaii on the horizon it was a great experience to have! Downwind foil racing isn't going anywhere. I think this part of the sport is only going to keep booming. It's very exciting

Just outside of Brisbane is one of the most fun downwinding spots you can find in Australia. Only 20 metres from shore will be perfect tall and steep wind bumps. Perfect to learn on and try out new gear and smaller foils and boards. After you go downwind - you paddle back up wind with the help of the current - or a foildrive. Catching up with Trevor King - who came all the way from Byron Bay ( ...

What a fun addition to the Axis Foil Line up. The 1401 ART PRO hasn't been out for long but I was lucky enough to get my hands on it in November. Please enjoy my thoughts and let me know where you might use or it or not use it. Dave.

Who'd thought a leash could make foiling so fun
Finally got mine and first session I used my 58 litre Wingboard. I could not get going at all. Not sinky enough and not floaty enough. Plus trying to hold the rope and controller. Grabbed my 32 litre prone board and so much easier. Straight standing sink start with a slow rise to the surface and then gas to get foiling. Boogie is everything it was promised to be.
My board is wider than yours. I can’t straddle the board like that.
@@gatesurfer must be pretty damn wide ;)
I just did a Foil Drive Plus SUP foiling dw run with it and a 120R tail, 75 mast, and was impressed by it. Bit big for my weight (I'm 70 kg), can't wait to try the 680! Cheers.
thank you for sharing....what tail and fuselage do you recommend with the 1401?
I learned on a Indiana 1100P. Great low speed start ability for a reasonable price. For the technique: I learned the hard way. the key to recovering from a touchdown is to keep fxxxx pumping and waving your arms like a madman. 😂 The board WILL rise with commitment. Keep going and going. The hard work will pay off !
Thanks great perspectives
Mate, you're doing the absolute hardest method for dock starts.
THis is a really old video. I don't do it like that anymore.
Great idea, but: No prop guard? Its a blender. It will get driven through the line up and probably injure someone - this will equal ban on foiling.
I have property in Mexico with an empty point break just outside of town. Would it be possible to prone a regular surfboard out to the lineup, catch a wave and then summon the boogie to come and pick me up and tow me back out?
No it won't work.
That is so sick!
my knees bleeding because of Fanatic board :) its like a sandpaper !
@@BatuhanYumrukaya yup I remember those days.
@@davewestfoils Glad to hear that :) I'm not alone
Can I do it with 125 liter fanatic board and foil ?
Sick!! Love it. 🤙
So what do I win for de"cypher"ing it? 🤞
@@DavidCourtney13 glory. :) same as winning M20
@@davewestfoils😂
Just saw one 1/3 the size of this at sunset Cali. He left it outside but got too close to surfers. I see the problems but I want one too. Looking for a better break.
Don’t go out in less than 15kts
@@philipniles6068 good on ya.
Beautiful runs!!
How do you feel about the width on the 5'4 and 5'8 options? 19.5 seems on the wider side. I wouldn't use a FD or wing with it so I was thinking about asking for 18-18.5 width on a custom.
Thanks for the video! Can I ask you which paddle did you use?
in light winds I think about going sailing (on my wing foil gear) instead of foiling... its just a mindset shift that enables me to enjoy working skills; switching feet, riding toeside, taxi jibing... all part of the learning process
Great detailed info Dave! Totally agree on 20cm cable with 90cm mast👍! Also what you are saying about foil size 840cm and Board size I completely share. Go small😅.(took me a while though) I've tried the 20cm and 15cm cable with 90cm mast and found also that with the 15cm cable you can turn with much more inclination 👍, more narrow.(not on your level of course😂) My biggest worries before I got Foildrive Gen 2 had been that I could not carve narrow without touching with the pod. But it comes with finding the sweet spot as you say.💪 The 80cm +12cm cable sounds like my next wish for Christmas.😊 Like your videos! 🙏Stefan
How much does this set up cost?
Board foil and foil drive about 12k
@@davewestfoils ouy! good vid/editing; action shots to start always! nice work.
Can good mentorship/lessons help speed up the progression?
100%
I have to ask a stupid question where was the place that you left from I think I know (around Sandgate) but I could be horribly wrong. Then where did the ferry bring you back to?
Thanks for your video, and some feedback below, i am going to order the 4'7" 80L of Macro air (air flow) type board, i am not sure this is risky or tough ways for learning of wing foils since some sales are storing recommend me to use at least 100 L or above, as a new wing player, my mindset is this technique thing right, even i use the bigger boards for the while, still take time to adapt smaller board if i change over it, that is a reason i want to directly jump into smaller board, hope this is right choice. btw my weight is 60kg..
Sweet 🎉
sic run.. respect mate
Why not the 1300s?
That's a huge foil for me. In hidsight I would've take the 850s
@@davewestfoils Great vid and life talk Dave. Just curious as I have followed you over to Code and loving the 980S. You loved the glide of the 770R , why wouldn't you have gone for the 860R for this run over the 850S?
Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great stuff
Keep it rockin Dave...... luv your videos
Thanks heaps!
Great stuff as usual Dave, I noticed your mast was right at the front of the tracks. Would you prefer to have the track box further up? I'm presuming your mast position wouldn't just be dependent on your code foil?
It's a bit deceiving on Code Mast because the base plate is big. I have about 2 inches of tracks in front left. Mast position is definitely dependent on foil brand and even foil within the range.
👍🍺🏄🏼
Great run! Any chance for a future video idea you might share how you set up your watch (Garmin?) for this or your upcoming Hawaii races?
legendary
Absolutely epic mate - well done. You guys have certainly got guts getting that for offshore without a support boat! Think that yoga thing at the start would be good for you to get into also!
Probably - I just can't straighten my elbows so no good for me :)
Nice one, ive wanted to kitefoil across but shark fear got the better of me lol
No sharks in the Bay ;)
Yeah! The DW adventure and comradery is real, from the banter in the van to setting off into the unknown. Our local crew is small, but starting to pull guys in and showing them the ropes gives me a kick too. It's more than just the foiling, as you said.
Yup 100%! I feel like a kid again illegally packed into somebodies Van haha
Awesome run fella's🤙🏾
That was epic and your 💯 on the money about the adventure ect.. 🙌
So good ay
Great adventure Dave 👍🤙well done
Wow .... Extraordinary mission, Dave. A question for you: you used 1130s... but how would your ride have changed with 1075r? Less playful but perhaps less tiring?
1075 was a LOT more lift and glide as you say. Less fun for these conditions. Almost any foil in bay bumps with the right wind strength is easy work. You stand there a lot no matter what foil you're one.
Probably not filming M2M? Maybe not filming M2O? Hope you have drone follow, your vids are great. Nice adventure.
I’ve got some friends filming m20 but no self filming either of those races. I wanna give it my best shot and stay focussed on:)
There were a lot of unknowns on that downwinder! That's what made it an adventure. It felt like I was a long for the ride. Aloha, Don
Sure was. I'm glad we pushed through the beginning :)
Wicked Dave! Speaking my language when it comes to keeping some adventure in your life to balance out being a Dad/Partner/Provider. Downwinding keeps me frothing through it all and that has to be good for everyone right
We've had weeks of no wind and I was getting cranky.
@@davewestfoils haha I can totally relate

Hi Dave, what stab fits the best for dock start?
400p is good for most people
This is fantastic, to david you're just a gaint in that suit
