Downwind Paddle Up Mistake.... I did this wrong for way too long

  • I had to go back to basics after I developed this really bad habit from using big foils. Are you having a similar issue?
As I stepped down in foil sizes it became really apparent.
This doesn't matter as much with big foils 1200/1300cm plus. But as you go down in size to 1000cm and smaller it matters more and more.
    Hope this helps.

Interesting, been having trouble getting my 1201 up while I can generally get up the 1300, will have to focus on this the next time I try. With the 1201 I can sometimes get lift but just stall, seems this may be helpful.
Do you have any thoughts on how the 1401 falls between the 1201 and 1300 for low end and ease of flatwater paddle up?

Video coming on the 1401 but long and short of it is that the 1401 is as easy to paddle up as the 1300 but faster. Turns about the same.

@@davewestfoils That is awesome. Looking forward to the video! Have been borrowing a buddies 1300 while I own the 1201. Seems the 1401 may be my next purchase for flatwater, super light downwind and easier dockstarting.

@@davewestfoils Followed the video which additionally helped me in isolating how to get a more powerful paddle stroke as well as a slight movement of the mast and I have now been able to get the 1201 up in the flat. Thanks for the tips!

Good tip Westy, I fall into doing this all the time and get frustrated and dont get on foil, but then remember i need board speed before pumping and then popping up is so much easier. When I get tired i always fall into this trap

I think the "bouncing vs. getting to speed" might depends more on board size than we generally think. With the same foil setup (Art Pro 1201), I can paddle up in the flats a 7'4" 105L with about 10 strokes, whereas it takes me nearly twice as many strokes with the same foil setup on a 8'4" 115L. It is extremely hard to bounce the latter due to its length and when I take off, I must do it gradually to avoid tail strikes. I know the general trend is to go longer, but I am considering actually going shorter...the search never ends ;-)

Hola , gracias por tus consejos. Practico Sup surf, tengo nivel intermedio. Quiero empezar a realizar Sup foil olas y downwing. Para el Sup surf uso una tabla de 120 litros. Peso 87 kg. Te pregunto: 1) qué medidas de tablas aconsejas? 2) puede se inflable? 3) qué medidas se foil. Muchas gracias!!!!

something I wonder. I can't really paddle up on flat water but I don't struggle that much to paddle up on bumps, or find them relatively easier than flat water.
My theory is that bumps are like catching waves, if the timing is right then the energy is there and you don't need to paddle that hard. If the timing is wrong then you need to paddle like crazy. Is there an element of truth to this? Talking 1300 in small bumps (like everyone else in the kook division watching your clips 😅)

I know this question will vary depending Foil size/shape, Mast length, Board. For flat water do you aim for a certain number of Strokes before adding the Bounce or do you instintively now sense when you have achieved the desired speed?

Hi, really love your videos and podcasts! There's just one thing that bothers me, What's the thing with "shitty foils" ? I think that if everyone could one a Ferrari would be great but that doesn't make all the other cars "shitty cars". Unless it's a "shitty talk" of a "shitty rich person" talking. There's top end gear and affordable gear to me. A shitty gear is one that doesn't work at all to me. And that makes me think what brands are you talking about? Have you tried them or is it just "shitty talk"? I love your podcast but I don't understand the need for the unfounded statements. Foiling is about having fun with your gear and not having lots of money to have the most expensive gear in the market!

Because it’s a podcast you talk for hours and you will say things - it’s entertainment - it’s not meant to be taken so seriously. And you’ve done exactly that - taken it really fucken seriously. I didn’t say cheap foils - I would’ve said shitty. And that is actually brands that are selling their foils relatively expensive that are bad - more like buying a Toyota that is actually a piece of junk. Naish foils would be my main target. You’re paying top dollar for terrible build quality, nothing lines up, terrible finishing and their foil designs have been years behind the rest. Why you took this so personally is bizarre? And you’re essentially calling me a shitty rich person. And why comment on this video dude? You can comment on Spotify ? But thanks for taking the time to tell me you love all my videos only because you had one thing that bothers you.

Certainly Westy isn’t saying anything about Shitty Foils (or equipment) here.
Look, if something is shitty, I WANT YO KNOW. I wish people had spoken up before I wasted $500 on my Naish Matador shitty Wing. What a disappointment it was to have four separate comments from bros that the Naish products came through and weren’t accepted. Dave, keep it up. Tell the truth and save us poor guys a little cash.
