As far as I can say - any shortcuts that get you up in in the bumps are worthwhile. The last clip in this video really shares my sentiments after seeing what's capable with a FoilDrive for downwinding and prone surfing.

Lol I've only ever foiled using foil drive. I love it! Sitting out wide on the Noosa points catching wave after wave with no competition!

Is there a rule of thumb as to which (Axis-)front wing to choose to match the conditions (for downwinding)?
Not really. There are way too many variables and local considerations. Understanding your ability and the run/conditions over time you start to learn. But skill is a big part of it too. I only use the 1201, 1121 and 1051 now.
Save the money would be spending on DW board for a FD instead?
Not sure - I have the luxury of having both. That's for you to decide which one you wanna invest in.

I’d say, at 71, a Barracuda/Sultan type board at 8’x20” with a Foil Drive will be required. Stoked, I mean frothing, for the future.
Which battery were you using on the down winder? The normal one or a lighter one?

What was the general sizing of the foil you were using?
Similar to a HPS 1050
Would the 1201 have worked? Or is it too fast?
@@solentfoiler5969 nah I don’t think so - bumps were so slow. It was like a bay run. 1300 or 1150 for sure. Maybe a shimmed 1201.
