To say wolves look for easy prey first is the assumption they’re not lazy animals though no wildlife is they’re built for stamina that’s what the outdoors does for you automatically everybody always forgets that or aren’t aware of it it’s a big part of what makes them what they are. There’s actually much that researchers don’t know about wolves. Like humans wildlife likely crave variety/require certain nutrients. Everybody knows when someone is sick including animals but that doesn’t mean it’ll attack just because it is there’s so many behavioural conditions between parties that will have many different outcomes. Animals like people are individuals no two are alike you aren’t to assume the worst or best with them you’re supposed to watch their behaviour looking for the change in cues. But as people don’t communicate with animals this is usually largely unrecognized.

I agree. Big woods, low deer density, and low hunter density public lands, especially during the rut - more time on stand will increase your odds of seeing the bucks traveling looking for does. In these areas I was always under the impression bucks travel more and greater distances in checking does than in high deer density areas. However, I used to pound my hunting areas too much in pressuring bedding and feeding areas scouting etc.. I now try to not disturb bedding areas and other areas and limit in-season scouting and have strategic access to strategically placed stands and maximize time on stand sometimes with other hunting members relieving each other.

Just because it's illegal does not mean it's causing the spread. It's a precaution. That nose to nose contact theory is only a theory, researchers have not been able to replicate that in captive herds. A wildlife biologist told me this. Two things are needed for an animal to get the disease, you need the prion that causes it, and you need an animal that is susceptible to the disease. Not all deer are susceptible. Not trying to be snarky here, it's just that government agencies are not telling the whole story.

I hear in some parts of southern Wisconsin that up to 40% of bucks have CWD. It seems like if it was a danger we would be hearing of some sickness. Seems like there is more evidence that some of our common processed foods are making us more sick and we continue to eat that every day. That said, I hunt northern MN and feel like I haven't really had to deal with this yet. I wouldn't at this point eat a deer I knew was infected. I am with you on the wolf thing. I know we like to whine about wolves and do believe wolves are keeping the northern MN deer herd numbers low because of their numbers and high killing efficiency during hard winters. There have been a correspondingly smaller numbers of hunters in northern MN as well. As a result I have noticed a higher number of older bigger bucks compared to the days of high hunter numbers. I have thought for years that a high wolf population may keep a herd healthier. It really takes attention to detail and good hunting skills to consistently harvest a deer in northern MN these days. Over the last 10 years or so, I have come to appreciate the unique hunting we have in northern MN. We hunt a low population deer herd in an area of harsh winters and high predator pressure. The herd has a percent of older and nice bucks that in many areas are not pressured by other hunters. We have the opportunity to pursue deer on a vast public land landscape unhindered by property boundaries or hunting pressure. Its still tough but a unique challenge that most hunters in the lower 48 states dont have.

I hunt a lot in that SE Minnesota and have taken a lot of deer from that area over the years. From CWD special hunts, full season gun hunts and archery season. IMO this has been a long time coming. I hate to say it in a negative way but it hasn’t been working. You can’t test a deer younger than I believe 2 years old or 1.5. It hasn’t shown a positive result in them because of the age structure. Deer can hold cwd for year and nobody would really know they have it because it takes time for it to slowly kill the deer. It’s mostly seen in the older age deer. That’s another reason why they allow you to shoot 3 bucks down there and when the cwd special season hunt comes around you can shoot as many antlered deer in the 3 day hunt as you want for $2.50. In Wisconsin they have been dealing with cwd for years and they have lived with it with minimal problems. I’m more concerned with EHD but that’s more of a Mother Nature issue. CWD is a disease that won’t be going away ever. I think it’s been around longer than we’ve know about it. But the DNR thought they could either fix it or have it managed. I would like to see them leave it alone for a couple years, and let the deer population come back. I still see a good amount of deer down there but it’s nothing like it use to be. EHD has a way bigger devastation rate than CWD ever will. And they do make a CWD kit so you can cut out the limnh knods and would be able to send them into the lab yourself. If they are going to abandon this whole project I’m not sure what would happen with the kits or the lab we used. If it would cost you money to send the stuff in or what.

I saw one giant buck (180+) here in Wisconsin on public land this season. He was one of over 30 different bucks that I saw during our state's archery season. Other than the big one, I saw only 2 bucks that were older than 1.5 years old - two eight-pointers probably around 100-115 inches. The rest, right around 30, were all small spikes, forks, and six-pointers. I don't use trail cameras and have been relying on finding large tracks and rubs to focus my efforts. I am hoping that by just becoming more familiar with my hunting grounds (around 65,000 acres combined) that I will eventually find where the big ones (140 inches and up) are living. Thank you for the thoughtful content.

Great video as always!! Missed the biggest buck of my life at 20 yards because I didn’t practice shooting my broadheads. Shot felt good and I shot right under him. Shot my broadheads at my target later that day and I was consistently shooting 8 inches low. Let this be a lesson to ALWAYS PRACTICE WITH YOUR BROADHEADS BEFORE YOU GO HUNTING!!!

I had a “good year” but didn’t meet my goals. I shot a good buck out of state on my first sit. Sat 29 times in MN, almost all on public. Ended up caving and shooting a 2.5 year old 8 point the last Friday of gun season. I’m thankful for the things I’ve learned and the venison in my freezer, but disappointed in my decision of lowering my standard too early in the season. Have lots of great bucks to chase next year, but a LOT of boot leather to burn between now and then.

Thanks for the video and the tips. I hunt a heavily pressured area near the middle of a square mile cedar swamp on 40 acres in ag country in WI. We started baiting in the last 7-8 years to get the deer to come to the interior while crops are still on because our sightings were deteriorating. Problem is going in there once a week to bait (myself) and my uncle baits and checks cameras 3-4 times a week because he’s retired and likes taking walks. We used to see 30-50 deer during gun season 10+ years ago before he retired and now we’re lucky to see 10 since he retired and we started baiting. I know deer avoid bait when the gun pressure is on , but I think the main problem is all the scent and trips to the cameras/bait prior to the gun season. Also he has built numerous ground blinds near his bait (1) and cameras (2). I know between the scent , ground blinds and bait is why the numbers have dwindled. Sounds like you’re a believer that blinds/shooting houses affect deer daytime or any movement as well. I think if elevated and in lightly pressured areas they can be somewhat effective even on 2+ yr old bucks.I’m to the point where I’m going to stop baiting and finally bought some cell cams. And I plan to keep hunting as far from his high pressured areas as I can. Has been somewhat effective during bow season for me , but the gun season has been horrendous for some time now, unless I get a hot doe nearby or I can grunt a cruising buck in on the fringes. Are tending/trailing grunts highly effective for you too when not overdone. I mostly blind grunt bc of the thick cover and to pull a buck off the neighbors. But I try not to overdue it or call to often or they might catch on and circle hard. Also I try to end my grunt seq. into the wind w movement of the call to try to steer the bucks upwind and not downwind depending where I think they will come from. The movement simulates a buck chasing. Also I have snapped some branches while calling when desparate and that helped me get my biggest buck back in 2020, a 133inch 9pt. He came in looking for a fight , hair standing an all. Sorry for the xtra long post but I wanted to layout the situation. Keep the videos coming boss.

@@tjr4483 hey good info here. It sounds like you have identified the issues and I think you are correct: the constant intrusion into your property certainly is hurting your hunting land. The cell cams will help a lot. Also, I think stopping the bait is a wise choice as well. You just can’t keep blowing out the property over and over to set bait. I think box blinds can work if you have screened access to them and you aren’t bumping deer each time you get in and out of them. Good luck
