I still don’t believe in the concept of quit because of these reasons. This is the effect of the commercial fantasy nowadays. I read it when it came out and I didn’t know it’s some hard work to get through. It was a top tier fantasy for sure… and? It became my favorite series and read it again. But to quit? No. It’s like: “ok, so we are playing that game? Let’s go…” mindset change. Not all the stories have to be told the same way. That would be bad. Now if you don’t like the story itself? That’s an other thing. Then it’s not your book. You don’t like military stuff and too dark or whatever. But simply because of being used to the methods of fantasy? Read some classics in literature and that changes fast. Also hard sci-fi helps too. So fantasy can be a bad effect on the reader in this case. You just proved it by explaining what a fantasy book should be like. Should be tho? That’s the main question of Malazan. How was Tolkien’s back then with Lord of the Rings. And Ursula K Le Guin had some questions about what should be in fantasy and sci-fi and how it’ should be done… now here you have this one. The next book that has those questions.
