Flash Tuning your Motorcycle: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know, with Shiv Pathak
Dive into the world of KTM Super Duke tuning with me and expert tuner Shiv Pathak. In this video, we're pulling back the curtain on ECU tuning for the Super Duke. Since the bike doesn’t have built-in knock sensors, we’re installing our own aftermarket knock sensors to safely fine-tune ignition timing and squeeze out the best performance. We’re talking about real-time data collection with GPS and accelerometers, and we’ll show you how we use that info to dial in the bike for maximum performance.
We’ll take you through how we’re collecting key data during dyno runs, then using it to make smart adjustments to fueling, timing, and other parameters. With our custom knock sensors, we’re able to monitor pre-ignition and knock, making sure the engine stays safe while delivering power where it counts.
In this video, you’ll learn about things like how knock sensors work (and why we’re adding our own), why pre-ignition is such a big deal, what’s going on with your pistons, and why we take it slow and steady when tuning. Our goal is to push the Super Duke to its limits while keeping it safe and reliable.
If you're tuning your own bike or just curious about what goes into making your bike run better, this video gives you the inside scoop on the process.

      @ I’m not very good either. But i love when my bit sinks deep and cuts some good chips. I bought a brand new 700 dollar Chinese lathe and instantly removed all electronics and motor . Then i bought a 2hp electric motor and welded a shaft onto the chuck shaft then fitted a new belt pulley and put a belt pulley on the new motor . Then i trued all the flat parts to get it rigid and flat and now it eats metal like bubble gum.

    I use to build turbo car back in the day one of the aspects that I based my tune on my cars was EGTs and conjunction with knock sensor to optimize fuel and timing tables. I have a question can you degree that camshaft to optimize the harmonics of the engine that free hp there.

    • @shivhappens9200
      @shivhappens9200 4 дні тому

      While it is possible to play with cam timing on gogo’s bike, it’s not sometime that is easily reproducible for our customers and other SDR riders. As for tuning by EGT, it works great on turbo engines that run low timing advance under boost. Too low of ignition advance to avoid knock in a situation where excessive boost pressures are run will cause a reduction of an engine’s thermal efficiency. Spark fires too late so that less of the combustion energy is used to push down the piston and more of it is pushed out the exhaust in the form of heat. Monitoring that exhaust heat is a useful way to know when that situation arises. Basically it’s a good determinator of how efficient combustion in relation to torque output. For non-turbo engines running relatively high nominal spark advance values, EGT tuning is a less useful metric.

    • @carloslopezcolon4387
      @carloslopezcolon4387 2 дні тому

      @ Yes you’re correct thinking back the most degree of spark advancement was 30<35 degrees. I know you can run a water methanol to cool the air charge and aids cooler combustion chamber so you can push more timing I don’t know if it’s possible to adapt to gogos bike I know on a drag bike the swing arm becomes a storage area for a plethora of things.

    • @shivhappens9200
      @shivhappens9200 День тому

      @@carloslopezcolon4387water injection is rarely beneficial in a naturally aspirated application. This is because the primary role of water injection is to lower in-cylinder temps by vaporization effects. The reduction in charge temp allows for more optimal ignition advance on high boost turbo engines that would otherwise have to run very little advance to an avoid detonation. Same goes with methanol injection which I’ve used in the past in drag cars. Tends to work even better than water injection since A) methanol is a combustible fuel (water is not). B) methanol has very high octane and C) offers very good cooling effects when it vaporizes.

    Fascinating! Just curious if knock testing is distructive or if an engine can tolerate a certain amount of knock? Also, is there an Open Flash for RS660?

    • @shivhappens9200
      @shivhappens9200 6 днів тому

      Engines can tolerate certain amounts of knock. Mild knock that occurs from time to time is generally ok but still undesirable. But repeated knock or more serious knock can cause pitting on the piston, broken ring lands and ultimately catastrophic failures. I don’t believe the rs660 has knock sensors. Generally they are only seen on flagship bikes with high output, high revving engines. I do plan to add support for the newer Aprilia models sometime next year. I’ve owned an rs660 for a brief amount of time. Really fun bike!

    @shivhappens9200 The whole det counting thing is great... Honda were selling det counters for their 125cc and 250cc 2 strokes in the 1990's and it saved so many engines from going pop... They would tune to get as close to optimum jetting each day and knock would happen even then, but they would have a figure they felt was acceptable. So if they got say 20 knock counts over a race they may feel they could get a little more power out of the engine. If they got 20 per lap then they would richen up the jetting or adjust the ignition timing to make it less likely to hole a piston. Looking forward to seeing how it all works out...

      Steve, you complained in the comments section of the last video Gogo posted about us not having the SDR gen3 OFT available for sale when you wanted to buy one last year. So you went with another tuner who rushed their product to market. I’m happy to you did. I think that works out the best for both of us. But complaining about our customer service when you aren’t even a customer is a little weird. Doing things right take time. Sometimes longer than anticipated. Others waited for us and are quite happy they did. Feel free to peruse the SDR Facebook groups for evidence. Same with the Ducati v4 OFT. I will never release something that isn’t fully tested and ready for public use. There is a very real safety concern with motorcycle tuning and I take my job quite seriously.

      @@shivhappens9200 This is the difference between rookie tuners who are in it for the $$ as a side-gig to their main motorcycle dealership/sales/pursuits, and people who actually understand how these complex electro-chemical-mechanical machines work and the potential control over them that can be optimized. Good job. Customers may be rather misinformed, unable to understand, and have specific goals they just want to speak into existence, but you as a tuner do not want to take advantage of their ignorance and make them guinea pigs for broken engines. There's such a thing as litigation and lawsuits from customers which can ruin your career, no matter how competent and understanding you are of the tuning environment, customers cannot be made to understand it. It can get to be a witch trails issue in law-fare.

      It's a shame you had a bad experience with OFT Steve, I'd give them another shot if you get the opportunity in future. My experience with OFT's customer service was fantastic, Shiv was extremely responsive and he even chatted via private message to answer the questions I had. He gave an accurate shipping time, told me which method to use for the fastest service to my country and made sure I got it in time for my track day. The tuning process was extremely easy with a video tutorial to guide me through, and the tune itself has improved the bike immensely, 3rd/4th gear power wheelies are much easier, I'm picking thats thanks to the better fueling below 6k RPM. From what I've gathered in superduke communities my experience represents the large majority of people who have dealt with OFT, and I think this video shows Shiv's character quite well. I commend Shiv, Gogo, and Angela for doing this work, which I imagine will trickle down to improve all of OFT's Superduke tunes.

    So what’s the effect of the twin spark plugs on the Superduke over a single spark plug head? I guess with this new step in developing the bike, your not going 1390 next year? Are you expecting more knock from the rear cylinder, possibly due to slightly higher temp as it gets less airflow? Are you monitoring cylinder head temp?

      Big displacement twins have large bore size, that is, if you still want high rpm (piston speed limits, connecting rod force limits, all of that) which usually translates to decent horsepower. Trouble with big bore size, the flame propagation from the point of the spark to the extents of the bore takes more time. This is not really an issue with four cylinder 1L engines as such, even when they shorten stroke and increase bore to radical proportions. Going with a dual spark setup on a very large bore size will reduce the amount of time to get all that HOMOGENEOUS (😆) mixture burning, thereby increasing pressure sooner and optimizing burn.

      @@exothermal.sprocket Exactly. I suspect the transition to twin spark also had to do with emissions requirements. To ensure a more complete burn with less NOx output. Also interesting to note that the timing tables for the secondary coil are similar to the primary coil except for high RPM/high load where they are very retarded (single digit nominal spark advance) vs the 25-35 deg BTDC you'd see on the primary coil ignition tables.

      @@shivhappens9200 Makes sense as regarding emissions. For example, the new Suzuki DR-Z4S coming has dual spark added to it. That's entirely emissions related. So the secondary plug at high RPM/load are firing significantly later than the main plug, you're saying?

      @@exothermal.sprocket yes, that is correct. It would appear that is an attempt to ensure a more complete combustion by staggering the spark events.

    Anyone ever mention how much this helps them in ‘sim’ racing, ie. video games? Cuz I’m a real-life sportbike/street rider… But I RACE in Ride 4, and I’ve used real-life racing/riding tips to help get me where I am in the game.. And this video touches on my approach to ‘drifting’ my bike into particular corners to get through them quickly 🤷‍♂️

    Happy Derek brought up the question about WHERE in the turn to apply this technique. It was something I was slow to understand. I used to feel like I was doing great in the “fast” group of track days, not realizing how lucky I was not to lose the front from opening the throttle too soon in the corner (a result of over slowing/not trail braking enough into turns). Anyway- four club racing seasons under my belt and my fundamentals are decent, but I really like your description of finding the next bits of time/speed in the “in between “ spaces. I could see this difference while trying to stay with our local club #1 during a qualifying session. By the end of the second lap trying to stay with him, he was gone. There was nothing spectacular about his riding aside from simply being quicker with his transitions during cornering and being more comfortable being closer to the edge of traction. (Racing Aprilia RS 660s) Really loving this channel- picking up a ‘20 Super Duke w/ 900 mi?! on Saturday for road trips and occasional track days. The RS 660 is a blast and saves $$$ on tires but I miss having something ridiculous! Racing OR/WA but have ridden the season opener at T-hill couple times. Hope to see ya some time. Cheers! Phillip

      Four seasons in, good for you. Most only talk about, dream about racing. Making the leap is a big deal. Takes courage voluntarily entering an environment where you know you'll get humiliated, at first. So, props to you. Also for recognizing going faster, at first, is about the bigger things. But after some time it morphs into being more about the little things. And then the super little things. ...Thanks for this response, its inspiring - and by that I mean it is fuel for me to make another.

      OMG don’t even worry. Derek dishes abuse out to me in never ending brutal fashion. He’s actually worse to me than I am to him. We met playing softball years ago. I’m the oldest guy on the team, so you can imagine the abuse. Motorcycles came later after he learned what I do. Then finally the tables turned on him for a change. I have years still before I make up the abuse deficit. :))))
