There is also a special guest for my rip off of Comedy with Colin!

    Nice work! My top ten: 10. More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon; 9. Gateway by Fredrik Pohl; 8. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card; 7. Hyperion by Dan Simmons; 6. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury; 5. A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller; 4. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin; 3. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley; 2. 1984 by George Orwell; 1, Dune by Frank Herbert.

    I love your #1 and will say two things about it: 1) The hardest cry I've ever had reading came with Flowers for Algernon (and I'm unashamed to admit it), and 2) there's no doubt in my mind it belongs in the SF category. People who think a book isn't science fiction unless spaceships, other planets, and aliens are involved need to expand their definition of the genre. Again, bravo! "Brilliant" is an overused word, but not in the case of your top selection.

  • @johnturiano

    Great list. So glad to see The Humans and Flowers for Algernon made the list. A few favorites of mine not on the list: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, 1984 by George Orwell, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and War of the Worlds by HG Wells.

    Spoilers: What I like is that Bob 1 isn't the main character. I would argue there is none, but Bill, Will, or Howard would be the closest if I had to pick, as they are involved with most of the larger plots, whereas Bob 1 is more a man on his own journey of self-discovery. My favourite part of the series is the war with the Others and rescuing the population of Earth. Bill is my favourite character, followed by Will and then Howard.

    I really liked Piranesi. It did remind me a lot of Iain M Banks Feersum Endjin. Which I loved. A house that contains many worlds and protagonist exploring it and trying to understand it. Rather than writing journal entries the protagonist writes only in phonetics.

    Completely agree with the Taylor choice. I just finished the first book and started the second (the series for the third time) waiting for my preorder of the fifth book to drop with Audible! I think Ray sounds like Tom Hanks. I recommend the Expeditionary Force series to you for humor….an AI shaped like a “beer can” and nicknamed “Skippy” by the human companion is snarky and funny throughout the 16 book series (a 17th is coming out soon). Craig Alanson is the author and the excellent reading is done by R.C. Bray.

    FWIW, Andy Weir wrote another book between The Martian and Project Hail Mary. It's called Artemis, and like many second novels, it doesn't get much love. It's kind of the red haired stepchild of Weir's bibliography.

  • @cavendar24
    @cavendar24 7 місяців тому

    I don't remember anything humorous in Hail Mary except for the irony from the abject lack of profanity after the extreme opposite in The Martian. I don't know how you can call The Humans amusing or funny. I found it to be terribly depressing and I rather detested it. I haven't read Kaiju but another brilliant book by Scalzi that should make you laugh, groan, smile, frown, even possibly cry is Redshirts.

    Read it in a mirror? Humanity is of course worth helping and supporting. Think about it. All that says we are and aren’t worth the help is contained within us. Without us there is nothing. Since a world without rational minds is a worse one the question is self answering.

    So glad you guys both liked this one better, as Matt seemed a bit down on the first one. Definitely liked the training/testing and the intrigue at the White Tower stuff here as well, though Rand's journey was also interesting. Also, glad you liked that prologue, which we used to refer to as "the darkfriend round table" back in the theory days when things were still being written, is very important and something you may find yourself referring back to, as there are a ton of hints at future characters there - more than just Ingtar and Liandrin that is. Something you guys brought up on multiple occasions is how Jordan kept telling you how beautiful Selene was or kept using fishing metaphors with Siune Sanche. That kind of thing is just RJ's writing style and something you'll have to get used to. Some readers complain about how overly descriptive and almost repetitive he can be when writing certain characters. I personally find this as a bit of a plus, especially for minor characters that show up multiple thousand-page books apart; it sort of helps you differentiate between all those "L" names you mentioned for example, and in a series with literally thousands of named characters it's useful. Overall, can't wait to hear the full-spoiler discussion for The Dragon Reborn, so Matt... keep up!

      It was a step up and I did enjoy it much more than the first. The prologue was brilliant and even though we are only on book 2 I'm really excited about the amount of forethought that has gone into these books with early hints of things to come later I think I will get used to the writing style, and I can certainly see the benefits of having a similar description when a minor character appears infrequently through the books. I think it stood out for Selene because we had her popping up a fair bit so felt a little bit repetitive I am 100 pages into the Dragon Reborn 🎉

      That is so true, that will teach Sam for watching the TV show before reading the books, it was in the blasted lands beyond the borderlands. I do find it amusing that the search starts in Illian which is like the furthest point from where it actually was found

    The Cicero trilogy by Robert Harris is tremendous. I am sure you will enjoy it. I have to pick out something for the readathon.

    I enjoyed this. It seemed to start out a bit fast an accepting to his situation, but the author cleverly reveals that his mind was tampered with to handle it better,
