Guitar Triad Arpeggio drill Using Root & 1st Inversion Arpeggios
This arpeggio exercise uses root & 1st inversion triad arpeggio fingerings for all the notes in the key. In this exercise each of the 7 arpeggios (in the key) move to 4 other arpeggios for example C moves C to Em, C to F, C to Am & C to G (& also reversed Em to C, F to C, Am to C & G to C) #guitararpeggios #triadarpeggiosguitar #guitararpeggiodrill

Melodic Extended Arpeggios Using Triads (All New Fingerings) 5 types of Diatonic 9th arpeggios

The 2 octave fingerings include 2 sweep picking triad shapes inside each arpeggio which makes them easier to learn if you already know your triads & a good way to get better with your triads at the same time. ...

I also use scale & arpeggio ideas that I add outside notes so they have a more chr...

    how many classes you have in a day? did you have time to study for the next class? seems like a lot of work!

    • @ericnaylorguitar
      @ericnaylorguitar 2 дні тому

      It was a lot of work but most classes didn't meet everyday (most of it was homework) so about 3 classes a day, plus a private lesson each week & you could attend as many open counseling sessions as you wanted but they were optional. The classes & open counseling sessions were during the day but you could go into the school to study/practice till late at night (which I often did). What made it harder for me was I had intended to just focus on school but unexpected financial issues happened & I ended up having to work about 20 hours a week also for most of the year which made it tougher, but it was still a great year 👍

    The best practice is playing . Play because you like to play , not because you have to practice . Either you have it or you don't . Just play and turn off the mind , which is the exact opposite of practising . The sub-conscious is a better learner than the conscious awareness of practice . The subconscious is where creativity resides , together with a vast library of music you heard . Let the subconscious do the work , it's better at it . You walk better when you walk without thinking of walking . Old Chinese proverb .

    • @ericnaylorguitar
      @ericnaylorguitar 13 днів тому

      I completely agree clearing your mind is best if you're trying to improvise, perform be creative or even just sound good. I did a video on this topic actually called playing vs practicing ua-cam.com/video/VubVDUtYgG8/v-deo.html But to progress quickly I believe you also need focused practice time in which you work on things you struggle with paying attention to your technique, timing, Etc. & also where you learn new things. It's like athletes they don't just go out & play their sport everyday (at least not at professional or Olympic levels) they have focused practice sessions then on gameday they clear their minds, relax & let the good practice that they've ingrained into their subconscious take over anyways thanks for watching & commenting 👍

      1st let me say congrats on how well your band is doing🤘& I agree, as you know I don't push reading notes on the staff, in my teaching it's optional. I think it's more important students learn notes on the neck & what I consider the more valuable half of reading standard notation which is learning to read or at least understand rhythms & rhythmic notation (8th notes, 16th notes Etc.) as I think that can benefit just about every player as it can be used with notes on the staff, Tab, chord charts, or when practicing especially with drums or a metronome. (of course I talk about all this in the video) anyways thanks for commenting 👍

  • @ericnaylorguitar
    @ericnaylorguitar Місяць тому

    Thanks for watching 👍 A chromatic scale includes all 12 notes on guitar (so technically everything is built from a chromatic scale). 2 of the elements that can make a lick sound chromatic (without just running a chromatic scale) is movements in 1/2 steps & not centering in any key so this was what I focused on when writing the licks for this video. All my Tab is free on my patreon page you don't have to be a member (link in description) please like, subscribe. share & comment all of these help my channel grow 👍🤘

    • @ericnaylorguitar
      @ericnaylorguitar Місяць тому

      not that I know of but about 40% of the book is just text with no standard music either, so I think it's a worthwhile book even if you can't read the music part which is usually just showing examples of the concepts. & honestly it would not be as effective in Tab because the concepts are the main part & they are shown fairly bare bones intentionally so that you can interpret them your own way. Tab would just give you one fingering example but many times there are dozens of ways you could finger the same idea. I probably at some point will do another video that covers more of the concepts from the book (& I have covered some of the same ideas in other videos of mine already) thanks for watching 👍

    Hey classmate! Great memories! I have that same Crossroads transcription, plus a two handed version Jennifer handed out later. I had an interesting GIT experience even as i was on my way to LA. I called my Mom from the hotel I was at after the first day of driving, and she said she got a call from a friend of mine, who"s brother was creating some computer programming for a guy named Mike Varney. Somehow my going to GIT came up in his conversation with Mike. Mike told him, to tell me to look up Paul Gilbert for private lessons. I was like "who?" I knew who Mike Varney was, but didn't take his advice. Silly me, when admissions asked who I wanted for private lessons, i said I'll be fine with whoever. Didn't get Paul. That was a bit of a regret. Although I had him for Single String Technique, so there was that. Sorry I'm a couple of years late on this comment.

      yeah you're not late on the comment you tube just finally got around to showing my video to more people. Same thing for me when I got to G.I.T. I didn't know who any of the instructors were (& just took a random private instructor). funny you brought up Varney the reason I decided to go there was I kept seeing players from G.I.T. appearing in Mike Varney's Spotlight column (way more then any other music school) so I figured if that many good players are coming out of G.I.T. they most be doing something right. So if it wasn't for Varney I would of probably never gone P.S. never saw Jennifer do the 2 hand version that's cool 🤘👍

      @@ericnaylorguitar Yeah Joe Pass was great! One memorable moment was when he walked with Pat Hicks into Jennifer's open counciling and asked her to play her two handed version of Giant Steps. If I remember correctly, he shook his head with a smile and walked out say "Crazy!" Lol!

    This is an idea that I haven't used that much, so I'm still figuring out all the possibilities but I do think it allows some cool options. (in addition to using it in pentatonics you can try mixing it with your other scales or arpeggios) Let me know what you guys think & thanks for watching 👍please like, subscribe, comment, share 🤘❤

      Yeah I think I improved 100% in the first few months that I attended. though now I would say most of the knowledge can be found online the hardest part for students isn't the lack of information (like when I was young) but too much info with not all of it being good

    I wrote this more as an exercise to teach alternating 3rds so I included 11 of those in this idea but I also tried to still have it sound like a lick. I hope you guys like it & check out full video to see it broke it down with other drills & Tab 👍

    So Diminished shapes moved up in Minor 3rds are cool but so for instance over Gb Dominant 7th chord I'll play E Gb G Bb Db Eb E which repeats in Minor 3rds but then I play Gb G A C Eb E Gb which also repeats and alternate the shapes through the whole half scale using the D G and B strings. So 3 notes on D string one note on G string and 3 notes on B string for both shapes. Then apply your Compass method too this. I don't don't know if this makes any sense to you and if it's misinformation please delete my comment. 🙂

    • @ericnaylorguitar
      @ericnaylorguitar 3 місяці тому

      yeah that creates a cool lick 🤘between the 2 shapes you end up with a full diminished scale but by leaving 2 notes out of each shape it's got more of a diminished arpeggio feel (with 2 notes added so it's halfway between scale & arpeggio which is something I do a lot) & while you can play this on any string set by doing it with the B string it makes it easier with less shifting 🙂(also when doing it over the Gb7 the 1st shape uses the notes of a Gb13b9 (without 11) so creates some tension while 2nd one creates way more with b9, #9, b5 & #5 so yeah cool sound 👍) Thanks for posting

  • @wackojacko3962

    Don't mean to bother ya...I would like too sequence the whole half scale, so what would be my best choice for first 3 tones descending? I'm only asking because I have an audience and don't want to hunt and pick wrong tones initially. Of course I can play the whole half scale. I mean that is what I call. Double half diminished whatever wtf....🙂

    • @ericnaylorguitar
      @ericnaylorguitar 3 місяці тому

      So trying to get a clear idea what you're trying to do when you say whole half scale this usually just is specifying a diminished scale starting on the whole step instead of half step (they can be the same notes a G# half whole is the same notes as a A whole half it's just how you think of it) So if you're using a diminished scale this is often used to create tension & then return to a major or minor scale/key (in jazz you might use the dim scale over the 5 chord then resolve back to the 1) keep in mind dim scales are symmetrical with only 3 different sets of note groupings. So any of them can be used to create tension for any key but you can choose ones that are more or less similar to the key you're going back to by finding more similar ones for less tension for example if using A harmonic minor a A whole half scale would only be 2 notes different. Maybe I totally misunderstood the question 😕 if I did just let me know 🙂👍

    The first part of the exercise I treated the intervals (2nd 1st 7th) like a pedal tone...then @ 4:04 I love the option if the 2nd group goes lower or higher. I'm actually feeling I am going to be able to move about freely and I sure this follows along with your previous videos on changing directions and injecting triads and becoming more melodic and sound musical. Absolutely love this exercise! 🙂👍

    • @ericnaylorguitar
      @ericnaylorguitar 3 місяці тому

      yeah of course always inject your own ideas and the things I show in other videos It's all just pieces of the same puzzle & you're right you could treat it as a pedal idea & of course try different orders around the circle do counterclockwise or just mix it up. I'm glad you liked it 👍

    In creating this video I actually wrote up 3 different ways or levels to practice the 8 directions (this is the simplest so would be level 1) with the original intention of teaching level 2 & just briefly touching on 1 & 3. But I decided that would be way too much for one video ( I have about 4 more pages of Tab that I wrote but haven't used). So if you guys are interested I will put out the other levels in future videos just leave a comment, like, share, subscribe & Thanks for watching 👍🤘

    So like around 11:00 I want too do exercises with a metronome that sound musical and follows theory. I do spider type string skipping alternate picking exercises that are supposed to develop good picking techniques . But I wanna be musical. Like a trumpet player following lines all over the place. 🙂

    • @ericnaylorguitar
      @ericnaylorguitar 3 місяці тому

      yeah being more musical is the point that's why I was encouraging people to move away from chromatic type exercises. But if an exercise you feel is improving a technique then there is benefit to doing it but you can also find exercises that are like you said more musical. To be able to play those horn like lines when improvising any of the interval, arpeggio or sequence patterns will help you build the technique & vocabulary you need to do that. so at the timestamp you mentioned I was just finishing 3rds then did a small piece of the arpeggio exercise. If you haven't tried that arpeggio exercise in full, check out that video it's definitely a challenge to get up to speed but gets you changing & playing different arpeggios in a musical order across the neck which can then be broken up into licks & you can add a metronome to any exercise. 👍🤘

    I like standard tuning. I do all my songs in standard. I don't care , I just don't like retuning 50 times a session. I don't play along with recordings. Pretty much every song I cover I've rearranged but you'll know what I'm playin when I'm playing it. I try to stick as close to the original as I can. I've learned a lot of songs and play what I want. I don't take requests. I learn theory and try too make it sound good improvising. 99% of the songs I know have lyrics and before I even play a note I make sure I've got the lyrics down cold. I'm not a vocalist. I'm a party animal and me and all my friends and everyone belts out the lyrics at the top of our lungs when we're listening to radio or at concerts or whatever...yeah, I sing the lyrics when I play...doesn't matter if I sing in key. I let the guitar do the singing. It really comes down too the delivery and attitude. I think Joe Walsh said even though you wrote a song doesn't mean you can play it. My renditions are okay. I'm an avid guitar player...not a professional. Having fun playing. 😉

      Nothing wrong with other tunings, but I'm with you I only leave standard tuning when a student really wants to learn a song in another tuning, but never for my own stuff 👍
