Rotting Plywood on your boat?- Tune in and see how to fix it!
Переглядів 1,2 тис.6 місяців тому
This is probably the number one issue with all my customers. Rotten wood, in either the deck, transom or in this case the seats. My wonderful customers who own this boat really didn't want to drop a lot of money using coosa, so were using MDO. My second favorite material to fix boats. I used some 3 year old Gelcoat, but you'll have to watch to see if it cures. #boatrepair #gelcoat #woodenboat

gelcoat uses a different resin though. Adding pigment to resin is common especially black when working with carbon fiber. but its not gelcoat. Gelcoat doesnt shrink or crack like resin, Its more stable and makes superior fairing filler too than resin. I suspect gelcoat has a superior dimensionally stable resin base with less styrene and higher solid/solvent ratio

I bought the tools, and shrink wrap. Then I offered a winterization service where I'd pull the boat out at the public boatramp and park it in your yard. I'd top off the fuel tank and put fuel stabilizer in it. Then I'd change oil/sparkplug/replace water in engine with pure -100 degree F antifreeze, and finally a tuneup. Then shrinkwrap. I charged $575, + gas cost. I was over run. Initially, just wanted to make the money back on shrinkwrap tools. My cost for materials for winterization was about $300 bucks per boat. I had to hire help.

I just bought every needed including 12" wide hull tape from Uline which cost me $2100 cnd (tax included), Uline had everything at my door next day (Milton to Whitby) watched couple video's. My neighbor wanted to this to learn also, took us 2hrs. (I am sure next year we can do in lot less) Now the marina in Port Perry wanted $565 including tax to do my boat. Stuff I bought at Uline is enough to do boat 5 or 6 time before i need more (and then it will only be $200 to $300 for another 5 years). On the 4th time I am in "the green" doing it myself. If you own a boat & need to do this every year, its worth the investment as opposed to paying someone else.

Great video series. I recently picked up a 15' Glastron Alpha (basically a slightly bigger sunfish) and will be restoring the hull soon. 2 questions if you don't mind. First, the previous owner put a layer of CSM along the bottom of the hull that will need to be sanded down. I'm assuming this will be doable with a orbital and 80 grit to get it sanded smooth and into the correct profile? Second, I was curious how much gel coat I'll need to buy for this size hull. It's only a bit bigger than the sunfish so I was curious how much you ended up using for these boats. Thanks!

This is a perfect video because you never quite know just what you might come across with any project. That said, the hull was in decent shape, I wonder why someone would even bother painting it in the first place, let alone using latex? I was expecting to see some hidden damage. Sheesh! It is wierd that you would think that most people do not have a first aid kit in their grab bag and your grab bag has room for improvement. Throw in some flares and a smoke signal. Get some cooking gear in there, with a ration or two. Do not skip the cooking gear, even if you have self heating MRE’s. Put a large fixed blade knife in there. Can be used for everything a knife does and also split wood with the help of a good smack of a rock. You leatherman should be on your person, not in your grab bag, that you might loose or did not grab for whatever reason. A magnifying glass. Good for hunting splinters and starting fires. Plastic bags of different sizes. Carry at least a big one (7x2 feet). Fishing line and hooks. Needle and thread. Waterproff matches. Finally you also need a few things in you boo-boo bag. Intestinal sedative… diarrhoea is dangerous in a survival situation. Antibiotics. Antihistamine and get one that makes you sleepy, so it can double as a mild sleeping pill. Water purifucation tablets. English is not my native language, Sorry if I misunderstood what you said or if I do not make sense. Happy survival from a former Danish Army guy.

I had ordered a red/red and amber traffic stick from them amongst other items. They sent a red/blue and amber. I reached out to them and eventually heard back. They said i had to pay to ship it back so they could correct the order even though the order info and shipping paperwork had the red/red listed. I told them i would not pay to correct their mistake and requested they send a shipping label so i could exhange for what i ordered. I never heard back fom them even after additional follow up emails. I ended up disputing the charge with my bank. In the interest of fairness, their "Elemental" surface mount LEDs have held up better than anticipated. I have 6 mounted on my truck, two in the grill, and two on each rock slider. They have been on for 3ish years now. Constantly exposed to dirt, mud, snow and salt, etc. Just recently, one of the units mounted on the rock slider has half of the LEDs constantly illuminated when powered. I suspect moisture probably entered somehow. It should be covered under their 5 year "warranty" but after reading the terms, there's no way it will be covered. Home install voids the warranty unless you're certified. At the time, the cost of outfitting my vehicle with their lights made it an easy decision. However, should i need to replace any lights, i will spend the extra cash on a company that values all of their customers and not just the ones that are convenient for them.
