    I used to do fiberglass years ago. We used to just use everglass to do fills and then thin out the gelcoat with acetone to spray. Worked out great. My first time seeing it done this way. Looks great!

    Seeing the condition of the boat you’re working on makes me feel better. I’m working on a 1968 Sunfish left outside in Arkansas for the last 5 or 6 years but it doesn’t have the hull damage yours does. Was the bailer already off when you got the boat? Mine is the metal bailer rusted on so have to cut it off. Luckily there are You Tubes to show me how. Glad to see you wearing a mask. You’ll be glad you did when you’re in your 70s!

    Great video series. I recently picked up a 15' Glastron Alpha (basically a slightly bigger sunfish) and will be restoring the hull soon. 2 questions if you don't mind. First, the previous owner put a layer of CSM along the bottom of the hull that will need to be sanded down. I'm assuming this will be doable with a orbital and 80 grit to get it sanded smooth and into the correct profile? Second, I was curious how much gel coat I'll need to buy for this size hull. It's only a bit bigger than the sunfish so I was curious how much you ended up using for these boats. Thanks!

    I've found your videos very informative. I'm restoring a fiberglass car body and made the repairs using powder-coated random strand fiberglass mat and epoxy resin instead of styrene to avoid the 'wax' the use of which intimidated me. My question is can I gelcoat over the epoxy repairs? I seem to remember an issue with epoxy in one of your previous videos. If I can't gelcoat what would you advise?

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  7 місяців тому

      First mike, thanks for subscribing. I always respond to subscribers. To answer your question, you cannot put gelcoat (which is polyester) over epoxy resin. It just won't bond well. Your only option is paint now. Next time just buy poly resin with the wax included, then you won't have to worry about it!!.

      A few years ago I restored my old Bahner flat deck. First things first was I repaired everything on the hull exterior. Then capped the rails (obviously not a necessary step) then got to replacing transom and stringers. Got all the dirty work done first. Then it was on to paint. In hindsight I wish I would’ve re-gelled it because it hasn’t exactly held up. Then built the engine and jet. Eventually I’ll get a new interior. But best of luck, my dad has a fully restored 75 Hawaiian

    Can you start with the waxed gelcoat from the beginning of the coats? What's the difference between two coats non-waxed, followed up by 1 or 2 coats waxed vs all wax coats?
    Do you have to wait for each coat to dry/cure before the next one?

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  Рік тому +1

      Laminating gelcoat is just that. The ability to laminate many layers without sanding in between. Waxed gelcoat cures hard, therefor if you apply it it will cure and you’ll have to sand before doing another coat.

      It’s called a guide coat. It’s pretty much graphite powder that when applied allows you to see scratches and low spots when you sand. The process is to sand until the black is gone. Then you know your surface is “flat”

      @HoldFastMarine  Рік тому +2

      Your not being a pain. Not at all. In my experience (20+ years) I’ve found that total volume is better to catalyze at. Now, let’s be clear it’s poly resin right? So if you need to add 5cc or mekp and you add 8 or 4 it’s still going to cure. Sometimes just to get it done fast I’ll add 3-6 more cc than I need. It’s all About ambient temperature as well. If it’s a 90 degree day you need to mix at 1% or 1.5%.

    So, the thing about silica is that the particles have very ragged edges. If/when you breath them, as you did after taking off the respirator and blowing the dust into the air, they become embedded in the tiny sacs in your lungs. The sharp edges cut your lung membrane, causing it to bleed, ever so slightly. The healed scab turns to scar tissue, which prevents oxygen from crossing into your bloodstream, which is what your lungs are designed to do. Over time, as you breathe silica dust, your lungs become excessively scarred up, preventing oxygenation of your blood. You suffocate.
    So, if you work with silica a lot without the respirator, you're gonna strangle yourself. Just saying. If you also smoke, can you leave me your tools? And wife or girlfriend? I guess I'll have to wait a few years, though. And, I'm already old, so forget it. Breathe all the silica you like.

      @markkraus3598 Mark, I'm learning this myself, so you must research and confirm what I tell you. I think that wax gel coat is a final coat only. I don't think that you can go over a wax coat, and if you need to go over a wax coat, you have to prep first to remove the wax. I think that a first coat will always be no wax. See dl4922 comment below, and also read the Total Boat product descriptions.

    What is the black dust you put on the hull prior to sanding the bulk of the hull?

      Well if you watched the video I explain what it is 🤣. But just for you I’ll tell you. It’s graphite powder.

      I didn't watch in the proper order. I was just learning the answer on the next/previous video when your response came in. Thank you.

      Its called a "guide coat" to help show how much has been sanded off, you can use powder or even dust some kind of black spray paint over it, just be sure to remove it all especially if if its not a completely compatible material. This is very helpful for large jobs you cant observe all at once, or controlling how much you sand off with a visual marker. Just something that will stand out to the eye, black over white and light colors, light over black or dark colors.
