      @@dr.animactionOof, glad you've caught Mysterious Cities of Gold. While I do love a lot of 80's toons, much of that is sheer nostalgia value, rather than the shows actually holding up for me in terms of writing and themes. Robotech, Mysterious Cities, and the first 78 produced episodes of The Real Ghostbusters are, more or less, the three shows which hold up for me in terms of writing. Because they don't "talk down" to the kids. TRG sneaks in a lot of sophisticated humor (the episode where the rich guy wants to put his servants and staff into a machine to send them to the afterlife, prompting Egon to muse, "Hmmmm, very Egyptian," comes to mind), and a lot of the early monster designs were outright terrifying (the Star Spawn in the sewers fight in "Collect Call of Catulu," anyone?) Cities - despite Pedro and Sancho as comic relief - doesn't shy away from gray morality (Mendoza flips between being a hero and antagonist multiple times over the show before settling down into hero mode), and doesn't shy away from consequences of violence. In an era where no one could be hurt on GI Joe, unless it was an alternate timeline, or the injury was the entire point of the episodes, or Transformers, where anyone shot is shot in the butt ("Ow! My rear axle!" "Ow! My rear stabilizer!" now that I've pointed it out you'll never unsee it...) Cities had sieges where one would see someone stabbed in the chest and pulled over a 30-foot wall! If Cities had been on a network, or syndication, not Nickelodeon, that show would have had a lot more trimming. And, of course Robotech has the consequences of violence, moral gray areas like crazy (one can't imagine the US government in GI Joe saying, "Well, we reported you, and the entire town of Springfield as dead," so go on a suicide mission and take the civilians with you..."), and tossed actual mature depictions of sex and romance into the pot. In fact, the first episode of Robotech I saw was, "A Rainy Night." Yup, Claudia and Lisa getting drunk and talking about it Roy hooked me because I hadn't seen pure character drama like that in a cartoon before! I may want to watch a few episodes of Jem to see if it holds up. I think (at least in memory) Jerica may be the best female role model in 80's toons (if not Lisa Hayes). Successful business owner, top performer and crime stopper1? What a woman! Edit: Robotech addendum. Robotech had a few problematic scenes which maybe could have been trimmed in the 80's, and certainly don't hold up today (especially in the "uncensored remaster"). Roy lustfully checking out Minmei in ep1 (Roy, you're over 30, she's 15 - don't be a creepy pedo!), and the entire episode where Rand is trying to spy on the girls in the bath (Creep!). Minor glitches in an excellent show - but things I'm surprised Standards and Practices let through.

    I really appreciate the shout out @dr.animaction All i could remember was that this show aired all 3 episodes early one weekday morning. I remembered the show when i mentioned it to a couple at a small meet up where we bought bootleg tapes in 1995. They said they had it and made the copy i had (with many other japanese anime), which is possible as why my tape was toast so fast since i watched it a ton over the years at EP speed. What i did not remember was the year i came out, i was always fuzzy on that. Thanks for correcting me there.👍🏾

  • @MarkTyger
    @MarkTyger 11 днів тому

    Impressive! I'd never heard of this either, and I was deep in the toy/comic/cartoon scene back in the day. Must have been a smaller, regional release, which is why so few remember it. Clearly the Lionel company tried to give it their best shot, hiring the best int he biz like TMS and that voice cast. But the core toy is Far too generic and clunky to gain any traction in the bloodsport arena that was mid-80's toy aisles. Even for '87, which did see some of the Big IP's like GiJOE and Transformers move out of their glory days and into their more experimental phases. But there were still too many other companies trying to emulate their success, to little avail in most cases. At least now, should I spot one of these weird boxy things on a table at a toy convention, I'll have a better idea what they might be.

    This show was my white whale for the longest time. I remember watching it when it aired, liking it a great deal, and then never hearing another thing about it until you mentioned it offhandedly in one of the early Animated 90s videos. It was one of those things I'd try to scrounge up info about from a vague memory of over the years, and absolutely no one knew what I was talking about. This and Pandamonium were my two "I KNOW I'm not making this up, why does absolutely no one know what I'm talking about" shows.

    I have been listening to Orbital Bacon that is another cartoon youtuber with content that covers similar shows that you did. While you are not able to become the showman that Bacon is, you did provide some helpful bits of information about classic cartoons from the 80s, 90s and some parts that go into a bit more detail. You even covered Vytor the Starfire Champion, then a year later or so Orbital Bacon had a few episodes of Vytor on his Sat Morning Cartoon stream and I would like to think it all came about because someone recommended it who originally saw your Animated 80s series and the research went from there to a few episodes being shown on Bacon's Sat Morning Cartoon streams. So you do have a significant value in order to learn about the lost cartoons of the past that are hard to find information from. So don't beat yourself up with the lack of recent content, you still did great job with uncovering some hidden gems.

    Pretty interesting. The one statement that I'd make Is that the officer probably should have had various (officer grade) for their rank. Major Bludd doesn't have a Cobra symbol because he's a merc that's kept on continual retainer, not an internal officer. Similarly Destro is an outsider that's working with Cobra but not actually a part of Cobra. We have to get to 1984's wave of toys before we start seeing any named figures internal to Cobra. (The Baroness, Storm Shadow, Copperhead, and maybe Scrap Iron) Effectively, I see the named Cobra characters as like the henchmen of a villain in a James Bond movie. That is to say, they're technically one rank below Cobra Commander, but instead of being standard officers (with the possible exception of Tomax and Xamot), they are instead specialists (like a villain's Henchmen). So they might all have an effective rank of Colonel, with outside affiliated characters having an honorary rank that's equivalent. As such, the officers seem to have been a generic hand wave to give the Cobra Troopers some military leadership and should represent any officer rank under a rank held by the named characters. Of course, that's from going off the cards and the figure design, and not how they're used in the show. I agree with the changes you mention for the characters, with one exception. and that is, given that there isn't a Cobra Communications trooper yet, I'd want to see an obvious walkie talkie on the officers at least.

    • @dr.animaction
      @dr.animaction 13 днів тому

      @jj-sc1kq The walkie-talkie is a good point, but we did occasionally see a Cobra Trooper RTO in the cartoon, so I figured that they'd serve that role (like every other role lol). As for the henchmen idea, I can see how that would work. Technically though, there does appear to be some sort of hierarchy there with Destro something of a de facto second in command and the Crimson Twins leading the CGs. There's a lot of room for interpretation there!

    Regarding the weapons of the respective figures, the thing that makes sense to me is that the designers were trying to echo images of the WWII Wehrmacht, where common soldiers carried a K98k, while NCO's and officers often carried something like an MP 40. This combination would at least visually resemble those WWII images, even if the actual firearms made no sense.

      @jonathanryder8037 Good point. I never really thought of the WWII analog for a modern military group!

    Scarlett's leotard has always struck me as problematic for her assigned role. It just doesn't fit in, especially considering the general feel of her 1982 teammates. At the very least, I would make the lower torso the same color as the upper legs; this would make the tan upper piece look like some type of protective vest, while also making the lower section some kind of trouser.

      I'll forever remember calling that out when checking into mealtime in basic training. Funny thing that I should probably mention in a future video that the three components of the Army, Regular Army, National Guard, and Enlisted Reserve, when put together spell out RA-NG-ER!

    Given that he served in Vietnam and was still active in 82 when the series starts, it is not out of the question for him to have the time to take those extra schools between the end of the vietnam conflict and the start of the series. I would agree it is unusual, but they are supposed the best of the best so, could happen.

    • @dr.animaction
      @dr.animaction 20 днів тому

      I totally agree that it's possible, but it's probably hard to log much operational experience when you're in schools all the time lol

      I thought that was a nice touch. As a kid you probably didn’t know what it was, but the idea that they are out fitted to sneak up and strangle people with piano wire really let you know what type of characters the troopers are.
