The Korean War Week 004 - Americans Repeatedly Routed - July 16, 1950
Elements of the US 24th Division, the only American one that's arrived in force in Korea so far, take on the North Korean forces aiming for Taejon, but they are badly- and easily- defeated each time. In the center and the east coast it's the ROK- the forces of the South- that are reorganizing and getting into position to try to stop the enemy. And Douglas MacArthur is officially appointed commander of all UN forces in Korea.

American troops have arrived in Korea and engage the KPA- the forces of the North- in the field this week for the first time. It does not go well for them. In fact, it's hard to imagine it going worse. The Americans are outnumbered and outgunned and are routed. In fact, the KPA are advancing all over the country, though they are taking heavy casualties themselves. Join us on Patreon: www.patreo...

The North Korean forces are advancing all over, and this week they take Seoul, the South's capital city, after just a few days of the war. There is another tragedy for the South when the Han River Bridge is blown while thousands of people are crossing it, resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths. The World responds to the invasion- condemning it everywhere, and the Americans decide to send in g...

Despite the fact that there have been clear signs that they might soon invade South Korea, when the North actually does in force on June 25th, 1950, it comes as a complete shock to the world. But is this a full invasion, or just cross border raids such as there were in 1949? And is there something more behind this? Stalin's Soviets? Mao's Chinese? And how will the world react? Find out this wee...

My favorite thing about these videos are people telling the stories of their grandparents and great-grandparents in the comments. I hope the trickle of small, relatable true stories never ends.

Indy idk how else to get in touch so I'm going to comment and hope you see it. I want to sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing an entire series on the Korean War. My grandfather was a Staff Sargent, April 1952-February 1953, stationed in Chorwon. He was a combat medic with the 25th Infantry, 90th Field Artillery Battalion. He replaced the guys that replaced the Bloody Gulch victims. His entire life he saw the war as pointless, futile, for nothing. He was so bitter about it. In 2003 he got to go back to Seoul on an honor flight. It blew him away: the 23rd Century City. But to see children walking hand in hand to school was what really got him. That's what made him realize it wasn't pointless. A man in his 80s finally found peace. I thank you, you and your team, from the bottom of my heart, for covering this oft forgotten 3+ year war. Staff Sargent G.E.F. Ehrman would be proud.

I am also going to comment this here so it lives on forever if someone happens to read it. My grandfather was drafted at age 22 and deployed to Korea at age 23. His nickname was "Old Man" because everybody else was 17 or 18. He trained at Camp Carson, CO from mid 1951 until March 1952, where he was shipped to Washington State. From there he took a boat across the Pacific and landed in Pusan. He arrived as a Corporal and was promoted to Sargent in January, 1953. Upon discharge he was promoted to Staff Sargent. He did not talk about the War. He had several jokes to deflect questions...one was this: Grandpa: I learned some Korean during the War. Me: Oh yeah? What did you learn? He would lean over right toward me and yell "GI, YOU NO F***ING GOOD!" and we'd both laugh. But the more I read, the more I hunt down information and assemble a timeline, the more I realize he was there during a very bad part of the war. Trench warfare in the mountains essentially. When he returned from Korea back to his farm he suffered severe depression and moderate to severe PTSD. One day in 1954 he got angry at a hay bailer and kicked it. It caught his leg and threw him into the air and snapped it at the shin. He was rushed to the VA where he spent the next 8 weeks with his leg suspended. It was here he met a pretty redhead candy-striper, my grandmother. To think if not for that brief lapse in judgement, I would not exist. They married in 1956 and raised four children. My grandfather retired from farming in 1985, after more than 50 years of it. My grandmother started a very successful insurance agency around the same time. They both got to spend the last 25 years of their lives touring the world, from Korea to Germany, from Rome to Ireland, from Russia to Jamaica. They worked very hard all their lives. In 2010 my grandmother passed away. In 2016, at the age of 87, Staff Sargent Ehrman passed away in his sleep from old age. He was the nicest man you'd ever meet. He was the most hard working and earnest man I've ever met. And he is still my hero, to this day, almost a decade after his passing. I wanted to share this because it is important to know of the everyday men who fought these wars. And because I honor my grandfather's sacrifices. If anybody wants I have a few more stories of his time in Korea that I pried out of him. He'd only talk to me about any of it, really. Most are humorous.

My grandfather was a part of the 3rd Battalion, 34th Regiment, 24th Infantry Division this year (1950) in Korea. He got the Silver Star as a company commander. He only ever said it was during a rocket attack. He was shot through the neck and spent the better part of the next year in a body cast at Walter Reed. Thankfully he recovered and remained in the Army. It’s incredible to see what these men had to deal with. Almost makes me emotional.

In a way, South Korea in 1950 was like The Philippines in 1941. In both cases the Far East command was caught woefully unprepared. McArthur was a common denominator.

Big Bad Doug is back and you know who he brought with him, intelligence man par excellence, Charles (Sir Charles) Willoughby ( aka Adolf Karl Weidenbach), if the Korean War is looking for it's Conrad Von Hotzendorf, he's just arrived. Don't bother him though, he's a busy man, in between taking time out to marry the sister in law of Bold Bill Sebald, Mac's political advisor and having New Deal economists investigated by HUAC so they couldn't get a job for a couple of decades, old Adolf, sorry, Charles, spends most of his time falsifying intel to make sure Big Doug is always correct. Willoughby's intelligence reports make Luigi Cardona's battle plans look like masterly analysis. I'm keen to see his antics in coming months although I'm not sure the boys of the 8th Cav and the Aussies/Kiwis/Canadians at Kapyong will be.

It’s only been what barely a month since this war started and I’m already beyond shocked at how badly the American forces are doing. The casualties alone are mind boggling to me coming from WWII. Like honestly how was there not an uproar in America over this? Barely two weeks and we’ve lost almost 2,000 casualties? I get it the army was allowed to shrink and become sloppy over the interwar period but this is staggeringly bad.

I do wish you had some shows here or on Time Ghost about how we got to this point. I suppose you'll cover the Potsdam conference on the WW2 channel, which is kind of where it all began thanks to Trumans big mouth. But what about the NKP party and army, where did they come from and how did Japan form and influence events leading up to the war. WW2 didn't just end, and the Korean war start.
