  • Despite the fact that there have been clear signs that they might soon invade South Korea, when the North actually does in force on June 25th, 1950, it comes as a complete shock to the world. But is this a full invasion, or just cross border raids such as there were in 1949? And is there something more behind this? Stalin's Soviets? Mao's Chinese? And how will the world react? Find out this week as our week by week coverage of the war begins!

Well, here we are again- boldly going where no one has gone before. Welcome to the newest TimeGhost production, "The Korean War" with me, Indy Neidell, as your host (yep, I'm writing the pinned comment for once). We're all pretty excited about this project because we get to research and write stuff that's off the beaten path, and really dig into a period of history that can get overlooked and lost in the shuffle. I've personally had a lot of fun writing the first few episodes, but it was harder than I thought it would be. I mean, I've just written two entire WORLD wars, how hard could little Korea be? But so much of it is new to me, and so much of it is still controversial, and so much of it is just down and dirty that it was a real challenge figuring out what to put in the first few episodes- other than the action in the field- and what to leave for the coming weeks. We're all happy with how it turned out, though. You probably have a lot of questions about this series, so bring 'em on below. And of course, it would be just plain wrong for me to sign off here without thanking the TimeGhost Army, because, as most of you know, it is the Army that allows us to come up with multi-year projects like them and then execute them as we wish without any outside influences or sponsors. We get to make our own visions a reality; who can ask for more?

My dad was a WWII vet and already a Staff Sergeant at this time. He had a great duty assignment at Fort Bragg. He was training new Army truck drivers. He was engaged to my mom, who lived just north of the base. All of the sudden, he was headed to Korea. He was badly wounded in early 1951, but he made it home alive thanks to a great Army doctor and a wonderful Army nurse. My mom and dad married in 1952. I am their youngest. I finally came along in 1969. Dad passed away in 2004, and my mom passed away in 2023. My wife is from the Philippines, so we fly through the Seoul/Incheon airport every couple of years. After WW2 is over, he came back to his hometown, but then enlisted by North Korean army. He sent to South Korea to fight, but he surrendered and fight against the North Korean army. My grandfather was in the navy and served in korea. He never talked about it. Even my mom forgets the details. The only thing he would say about his service was even back then he was disappointed with how the navy was changing over time, and how they lost their toughness, and the discipline that made them great. And this was in the 60s. I didnt even realize he was a korean vet. I knew he was in the navy, but only recently did my mom tell me how he was deployed there before he started having kids in '56.

As an Italian I know nothing of the Korean War. But I think everybody should learn about "distant" wars, because the more you learn about them the more you painfully realize that, behind the unique historical events, it's always the same dynamics, the same ways of thinking that set war in motion. I think it helps being self-critical, because you look back at your own history and present times with a broader point of view.

From a Liberal Western standpoint, this war achieved SO MUCH more than Vietnam did yet it is the Forgotten one.
      2nd thing:
Do NOT believe the people who overtly credit the Americans for “what South Korea is today”. South Korea stayed a military dictatorship until the 1980s. It was by the blood of their own freedom-loving ppl that they finally became a democracy, the Americans may have stopped the North Koreans from communism-ing the whole peninsula but in true “Better ded than red” fashion they did not ‘interfere’ after 1953.

When he passed and my wife applied for his veteran's burial benefits, we found out that he had three silver stars for heroism in this war. In addition, my dad was called up in the draft to serve, but since he was married and I was just born, he was deferred. Twenty years after that, I would be drafted during the Vietnam war and was sent to Seoul, South Korea, where I served for 16 months at the United Nations Command/United States Forces Korea under the 8th Army. 22:47 Some of the viewers will be surprised to learn that the division was meant to be temporary and had nothing to do with regional political differences since the regional difference part didn't exist in Korea when the division began. During WWII, one of the requirements for the USSR to join the Allies was a promise to help defeat Japan. When the USSR liberated Manchuria faster than expected, and it looked like they'd reach Korea before the US could, the US side panicked and proposed a temporary division of Korea where the USSR would halt. To the US's relief, Stalin agreed.

@@katana258 They were reputedly very efficient - ROK troops in general in Vietnam. They also had a reputation for cruelty. One account I read ( from an American source) said they distrusted the interpreters supplied to them by the South Vietnamese. So they killed them, considering them VC infiltrators, and just taught their own troops pidgin Vietnamese.

It's really weird for me to come across this channel and not have an absolutely massive backlog of videos to catch up on. I watched the first world war series while I was still in highschool, binged through the WW2 channel over a few weeks a year or so ago cause I didn't even realize y'all had been doing it. Looking forwards to this, and I got the bell on so I'll know when you drop new videos!

    To the Set Dresser,
I first saw that style of telephone as a young boy in the hotel were my sister's wedding reception was being held. I can remember thinking they were sooo amazing and 21st Century and here I am at the other end of time having watched your video and writing to you on my real 21st century wireless phone, what a life.
    Great work 👍.

I spent a year stationed in Korea between 1991 to 1992. I was at Osan Air Base when the anti-aircraft guns were not ALL fully manned 24 / 7. On a trip to the DMZ I took me a seeing numerous tank barriers to figure out what they were. The war was just on an extended pause. I hope the extended pause continues to hold.

WW1 and WW2 week by week have brought me so much joy in addition to all of TimeGhost's other content surrounding the world wars and interwar period. I was wondering what to do with myself after WW2 week by week ends but now I have the Korean War! I am looking forward to diving into a conflict I still have much to learn about. I am confident I'll get a comprehensive, in-depth, and unbiased take on it from some of the greatest historians I've had the pleasure of learning from. Thank you TimeGhost team for all that you do.

I must admit I don't know a lot about the Korean War, especially compared to WWI & WWII prior to the awesome content you guys have produced over the past decade. So I'm definitely looking forward to these videos. They're certainly pertinent given the current situation on the peninsula with Kim Il Sung's psychotic grandson up to no good.
