      Please please please do an expose on Task Force Smith. This year celebrates 20 years of my unit’s (part of Task Force Smith. If you’re researching early war you’ve seen the name Gimlet.) first deployment since Korea. I know I personally would find it awesome and I’m pretty confident my brothers would as well.
      I can also provide unit history as well if required. I have a copy of a unit made history book (from creation to end of Korea) printed shortly after they redeployed back to Japan in 1953.

    During the 90's while serving the mandatory military obligations as all Greeks do, I stumbled upon the official chronicles of the Greek expeditionary force in Korea published by the Greek Army. The first to die was an overzealous comms private who died of cold after overexerting himself while installing the comms cables on the first Greek base camp. He was unaccustomed to cold climates and caught a severe cold.

    The battle of Chosin Reservoir might be the most terrible battle that US troops ever fought, and so few people aside from Marines talk about it! Some guys were literally marching on blocks of ice formed from sweat pooling in their boots. It was an outright defeat where the only victory to be found was in survival. Strange as it might be to say, I'm really excited to see this conflict get covered by you guys.

    • @spamsucksspam
      @spamsucksspam 2 місяці тому +2

      Yes. Plus I love your username! Few know of it, perhaps because it was such a terrible battlefield defeat. However, rest assured that all the Army infantry officers I served with in the ‘80s and ‘90s, not just those who did a Korea tour, knew about Chosin. And Task Force Smith. Chosin was brutal even without the spectacularly-deadly weather conditions. It was nearly a rout. I had the honor of once meeting some of the Marines and US Army soldiers that fought and suffered there. I myself had a great year on the DMZ and we had some excellent staff walks on the terrain of battles fought in that “Police Action.”

    • @napalmpudding
      @napalmpudding 2 місяці тому

      @@가니메데 Maybe I should expand on what I mean by 'terrible battle' and 'outright defeat'.
      With terrible I am mostly referring to the conditions the battle was fought and not so much the outcome. They have very, very cold and wet winters in Korea, particularly in the mountains in the North. This paired with, and boy is this some deja vu, a lack of appropriate cold weather equipment for the Americans made it so that they suffered high attrition from frostbite and pneumonia on top of having to fight an enemy 4 times their strength.
      As for 'outright defeat', nearly 8000 non battle casualties, 1000 killed, 4500 wounded, 4800 missing, being driven from their positions, having to leave a significant amount of wounded behind, leaving the enemy in command of the field, AND that particular 'field' being the high water mark of the UN advance into North Korea.. I don't think they could have been defeated more soundly outside of the entire force being destroyed or captured. The Battle of Chosin Reservoir was the literal turning point of the Korean war's second phase and marks the beginning of its third. So yeah

    This war is one of the most underrated events in modern history, yet it was crucial for tbe history of the region.

    Looking forward to it. It's good to see proper attention for forgotten wars.
    I think people underestimate how bloody the Cold War actually was, considering all the proxy and intrastate conflicts that the period entailed. Millions of people died, especially in Asia and Africa. And then there's all the aftershock, from Yugoslavia to Indonesia to Iraq. We're probably only now ending this period of conflict, and there's still many unresolved geopolitical issues which stem from Cold War era politics.

    Sadly this war is completely forgotten in Belgium, except for a small monument for the fallen in the city of sint niklaas. I learned about it, because my late grandfather was paratrooper who received his training from korea veterans.

    I'm very happy to have found this channel. I tried to learn about this topic through Zack Twamley. While he seemed very knowledgeable about the Korean War, he is also an extremely dry orator. Subscribing.

    My Grandfather was a Marine heavy weapons specialist during the war. He carried a BAR and used 50 cals to recoiless rifles. He died when I was 14 years old. When I was little about 6 to 7 he would tell me his war stories. I think he did this because I was to young to understand the concept of what war was really like and it was a way for him to get it off his chest. Now that Im 23 the stories he told me were terrifying. I cant even begin to imagine the fear he felt and bravery he had to be able to survive. He lost alot of friends there sadly and never did his honor flights. I dont blame him not does my Dad. I sure do miss your grandpa Jack. Wish you were here so I could listen to more of your stories or just to talk.
