Famous American scientist on living in Serbia
Meet Greg Gage, a renowned American neuroscientist whose lectures gain millions of views on UA-cam. He is a professor at the University of Michigan, runs his company “Backyard Brains,” and is also a Serbian son-in-law. Once a year, he comes with his family to Serbia for a month or two. He shared with me why Serbs aren’t used to asking questions publicly, how the famous Serbian hospitality can seriously shock an American, and how to find freedom in Serbia as an American. Enjoy!

This is Alex, he lives in a big house with his Serbian wife, their three kids, in-laws and tenants. Can you imagine what it’s like for an American to live in a big house with a big Serbian family? He’s been living in Serbia for almost 5 years, working remotely for a company in the U.S. Back in America, he experienced the nightlife in New York and Los Angeles. But now he enjoys rakija in the bac...

Is there a reason to exaggerate things in Canada? Sure, it is getting worse, but your account of Canada isn't what I have experienced. When people are looking for information about Serbia, you're doing an injustice to your cause by exaggerating.

Everything is easy in Serbia, if you are well monied person. Spend there your older years and see whether you still maintain same rosy outlook. I have 3 separate cases in family and among friends where the medical emergency vehicles (Prva Pomoc) refused come for them as they were older than 50 years. Also, doctors will waffle for months while your cancer progresses, wait until you take a loan o pay for life-saving surgery, and then claim that it is too late to even try to help you. If you do not have a friend/family connection you will not even get accepted in hospital. It is ugly to be sick and/or old there.

When I was younger i hated my country and wanted to leave, grown up in worse period with wars and sanctions, while western world was thriving made me jealous and to hate everything Serbian and my life in it, now in my early forties I still hate our politics and current pop culture to be honest, but I would never change it for any country i dreamed to go to as a kid. Never as a kid i did look and see the beauty we have in it with its people, mountains, rivers, food, sports and i took it for granted. That sense of community he talks about is one of best things we have, and friendships we make are true and sincere and i love that about our culture to call friends and relatives and make a feast for all of us to just enjoy and chill with each other is something that countries i thought as a kid that are awesome are lacking and cannot be replaced.

He claims he is left, and says that the right is worse, but all the problems he outlined is a direct result of the lefts influence... And he admits he is against it, but is afraid of getting canceled. This is my friends, brainwashing. Even a top neuro scientist is not immune to it.

I live in Belgrade and I don't know absolutely anyone whose relatives or inlaws can come into their home just like that. With mobile phones today even the children and parents call before they pop in. Only the families that have preserved a very traditional way of life do that, though it sounds weird and indecent in big cities. I would never ever go to my son's or my daughter's house without prior calling. Why and how should I? It's entirely out of the question.

Neverovatna životna priča i zrelost ovog mladog čoveka. On to zasigurno jeste, i vrlo zaslužuje posle toliko mnogo truda, rada i odricanja da danas bude tu gde jeste.
