When you only get a couple seconds to end a fight
Frieren has a bunch of outstanding fights. So many that it's easy to lose track of all the great ones worth exploring. This fight was one I remembered but didn't realize until revisiting it how outstanding it was.

I don’t know what part of mushoku tensei in season 2 you didn’t like, but I do feel like I have an idea and might be the ending of season 2, which I also don’t like rudeus’s actions. I might be wrong and if so ignore the text I think the mistake you were implying Roxy and rudeus, which I agree was a shitty thing for rudeus to do. But I think show has changed slightly to be less about punishing mistakes and more of how these human people who make mistakes have to find the best way to deal with them. Similar how Paul married Lilia to take responsibility for getting her pregnant, rudeus made a mistake and owns up to it and slyphie accepts it. After Paul’s death rudeus is now striving to be an adult. He’s grown into a man who now understands the values of family so he’s technically redeemed himself, going from a leech who cursed his family and didn’t even attend his parents funeral to one who’s know supporting his mother and sisters, with a family and a job.

It definitely keeps the realism in check when it comes to combat. In most scenarios where one side is significantly stronger than the other, it's no different than drawing a gun and shooting a man across the table from me(or Han shooting first.) Even the lengthy fight scenes have purpose rooted in realism. While the finishing strokes of any duel are often short and anticlimactic, there's usually a period of unknown opponents feeling each other out before committing to an engagement or exchange. In the mage exam arc, many of the delays used are to explain the abilities is just time that would be used to analyze the environment and opponent, probe for weaknesses, or look for an escape. Part of Frieren killing demons so quickly, and often mid monologue, is because that's how quickly combat really happens. Five seconds doesn't feel like a long time, but anyone could draw a gun and shoot someone in less than a tenth that time. There's nearly no reaction time available for the demon at all, and they're busy talking.

That was a useless comparison. Demon Slayer writing is built on the belief that people don't essentialy change. Characters have a hard kernel of personality that expresses itself according to the context or that is lightly influenced by intense past moments. Zenitsu is neurotic and anxious to his core and that never changes, that's why there was the need to create a second personality wich is him sleeping. the only moment were he can really go above it is the last arc where he is blinded by hatred, the exemple were he stands against inosuke is not him being brave, its just him not being afraid that much.

I think like any music, it can be done well or badly. I dislike most jazz, but I find some of it incredible. I don't like most dub step, but some of it is great. most classical music isn't that great, but some of it is amazing. in truth 'most' of anything isn't that great, and the pareto principle delves into that. the beginning of this tune is pretty good. the rest of it okay. I imagine, just like bagpipes, if you find the right way to play it, almost anyone will like it. ;-) polka, yodeling, mongolian throat singing.. there are good and bad examples of all of it. for fun.. check youtube for 'chicken attack'.. done by a japanese yodeler. ;-) is it great? I imagine people will have differing opinions. :-D

IM SO GLAD THIS VIDEO EXISTSSSS. A lot of the rant videos I see are blinded by anger, I think this explains everything I’ve been thinking about this season. I think this video, while criticism, still accepts that arcane is great. the convenience was exactly what I didn’t care for but I couldn’t put my finger on it. And Maddie was definitely very disappointing, I feel like she could’ve been alot more with TIME. Maddie felt unnecessary and it’s saddening because i actually really like Maddie. Jinx’s character also didn’t feel very complete to me, I get what they were trying to do but something was missing but idk

The thing about himmel and stark that I like is that they aren't just playing spiderman, they are also willing to be peter parker as well. They aren't just taking that fame and reputation for granted. It was earned and it didn't dimish how human they felt about being responsible for it.

You mainly focus on the time zenitsu protected the box, but this isn't the only example though; he also protected the girl from daki in Entertainment district. Zenitsu becomes fearless whenever he sees bullying as it reminds him of his interactions with kaigaku. Zenitsu doesn't always use his sleeping mode. Instead of thinking of sleeping zenitsu as different person; think of it as a protection for zenitsu because he can't see what is happening. Unlike Stark who loses fear after an experience of "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger", zenitsu goes through a mental battle as he contains self-doubt with impacts his personality significantly. The author is quite direct when talking about zenitsu's reasons for being a demon slayer. The author states that zenitsu has no one to rely on except for his master who is the only one who cared for him at the time. Zenitsu then goes through the final selection and meets Tanjiro who cares for him. After figuring out that Tanjiro cares for him like his master he decides to stick with him and protect what he finds precious. This attachment towards Tanjiro and his master's wish for him to be a successful slayer are the reasons he stay a demon slayer. To compare characters to each other you must establish what type of conflict each character goes through and unless the type of of conflict is the same the comparison cannot be made. Therefore Stark and Ussop cannot be compared with Zenitsu. Stark and Ussop - Character vs Society/Character/Environment Zenitsu - Character vs Self/Character/Society

people like good characters. it doesn't matter if the character is male, female, green, alien, a gelatinous blob, a bird, etc. this is something 'woke' seem to not understand, thinking that a character needs to be in a wheelchair fo people in wheelchairs to like them, or that an evil person should not be in a wheelchair because then the message is that 'people in wheelchairs are evil".. this is literally what the makers of dr who said this past season. it's nonsensical. but it does reflect woke thinking, for example that your skin color makes you more aligned with someone with similar skin color than someone with a similar background. like a black person studying japanese archery in japan wouldn't have more in common with a student from another archery school than they would with a black person from zimbabwe or harlem. but woke gives more weight to skin color than shared experiences. this is why they think males can't edientify with females (contradicted by characters like wonder woman, sarah conner, ripley), or that girls can't identify with male characters for some reason. firefly is an excellent example of marvelous characters that everyone liked, no matter their biology. it's because the characters were interesting, had different strengths and weaknesses, so it's not like you only like the character most like you, you liked all the characters for the people that they were. all of them. not just one, or the white ones, or the black ones, or the males or the females. they were all good characters and all of them were very much beloved, which is why the show had such a loyal following. 8 excellent characters in one show? a statistical miracle.

This arc aside Frieren has the structure of what I call a one-two punch (I don’t know if it has a real name). An episode is broken into essentially two episodes, it is only one of two tv shows I’ve really seen do it. There is so much room for quick, fast, and satisfying story telling over the coarse of half an hour it’s amazing.

I am also one of the people who loves the archetypical coward in media. It is SUPER easy in a media setting to just say "this character is a hero and they aren't afraid of anything" but, it's much harder to make a character that is afraid of things, and make it believable that they are able to overcome those fears in a realistic way. Stark v Dragon is a great example of this, he was rightfully afraid of the dragon, and the reasons that he fought it were: he wanted to help the village, he believed that even if he died Frieren would kill it (was ready to accept that outcome), and he learned that Eisen who was arguable one of the greatest warriors on the planet was also afraid. Zenitsu gets the cop-out of "He was unconscious so his fear didn't matter, and he doesn't remember it after the fact" which feels lazy BUT that's what the creator wanted from the character comedic cowardly power. A real-world example of this could be something as simple as a story form my own life. I used to be the archetypical coward (so to speak), not wanting to deal with confrontation, or any kind of situation that could deal end in bodily harm. I then came to the decision that was not a good way to live, and changed my habits, built my body, and started stepping outside my comfort zone. Instead of looking the other way in confrontations, I would step up and try to resolve the issue. Later in my life, I decided that I wanted to devote myself to helping others so I got first responder training, and volunteered at a local fire station I still remember exactly what the chief said to me before I signed the paperwork it went as follows "I want you to fully understand what you are signing up for when you fill out these papers, this isn't just something you do because it looks good to the ladies, you need to understand that if you go out on a call that could be the last time you see your loved ones its easy for something to happen and for you to lose your life on a call." <- lightly paraphrased but that's the jist of it. I made the call to sign-on then and there because my desire to help others outweighed my desire to look past the suffering of others. (These events weren't overnight, they took place over the span of ~10 years)

The first minute, you talkin scale of worldbuilding, which sets the pacing for the storytelling. It's near-human, near-irl level of scale, until the big action sequences happen. Most anime I see, 1000 year goth girl is whatever --- I can almost believe 1000 years in Frieren. It's not tryna do the spectacle as much as tryna contain spectacle within itself. It's a battle anime wrapped in nostalgia, with melancholy and jolly indifference as its flavours.

I disagree on the idea that the story MUST condemn bad things that happen within it. I resent the thought that all stories must in some way or another reinforce the morals of the real world. I like stories about worlds where things we consider bad are rather commonplace and nobody bats an eye at them, and the greater ramifications of that for how a society functions. I like it when in the world of the story, those things we consider morally reprehensible are laid bare and we're forced to look at them amorally. It's such an unexplored terrain precisely because of how afraid we are of not telling people what to think lest they arrive at the wrong conclussion, or worse, of being accused ourselves of being evil if we don't immediately condemn said things or deign observe them from a different, less ethically tincted lens. My best example of a series like this that I've seen so far is Made in Abyss. It shows so many things we'd consider morally repugnant or evil, but never condemns them because that is not how people think in there. It's transgressive of what we're comfortable with, but not in a provocative or edgy way, rather it truly feels like that's just how things are in that world. The people of the world of MiA do have their own morals, and there's many things they consider evil too, but that's their morals. OUR morals and views hold no sway on how things operate on the other side of the screen. I wish more media attempted something like that, to create a world that is truly its own and not so obviously derived of our principles.

I dont think anything about the magic can be defined as "hard", as even if it is "understood" it isnt explained with a rigorous set of rules, more so by simple, super broad rules. That is what soft magic is. Magic that can do almost anything, with very broad rules. Hard magic needs to be heavily rulebound.
