I watched frieren with my dad (he dislikes anime) but he said frieren is one of the best shows he has watched. As he said its so simple and beautiful. He actually stumbled onto the show accidentally as I was watching it on TV and he got curious so he watched it with me. We watched an episode a day (sometimes 2) and it was really cool, watching an amazing show with my dad. 10/10 show period.

I rewatched Frieren with my mum (who's in her 50s) and she adored it. I've watched a few shows with her before that she enjoyed well enough, but Frieren in particular really seemed to speak to her, and that's because she found Frieren as a character incredibly relatable. It was the first anime we'd watched together where the protagonist was an older lady like her, and she liked that although Frieren was wise and experienced, she never stopped growing and learning new things. I don't think I've ever seen her invested in an anime character quite as much as she was with Frieren, and I can't wait until we get more anime content so I can watch some more with her.

The mental processing I've had to go through before considering recommending anything anime to a non-anime fan has been an exhausting reality since becoming an adult. How does it depict its female characters? Is there egregious fan-service? How many episodes are we talking about? Where can you even get it legally? Does it have a dub? Is the dub any good? Is there heavy culturally-specific humour or pop-culture references that would alienate them? How much weirdness can this person tolerate in general? and many more thoughts go through my head at lightning speed.
Anyways, that's why FMB and Ghibli movies have always been a safe go-to for inoffensive-yet-quality. Frieren is in that Ghibli territory. Strongly written female protagonist, no real fanservice, immaculate animation quality, and it has a lot of variety to offer -- adventure, action, slice-of-life, romance, and Himmel -- unless they can't deal with the pacing it's going to be a solid recommendation for years to come.

I dont envy your generation. I'm in my 40's and I just don't think about any of that crap....I recommend what I like and at most give a caveat if I think it's too egregious in theming for someone to let their kids watch.... There is a reason I don't associate with the type of people who are going to get butt hurt by the occasional off color joke, judge me based on a perceived slight delivered by a line in a cartoon, think I support misogyny because of the writing of a fictional character or assume I am some kind of freak because I think Gushing Over Magical Girls is one of the best "Magical Girl Subversion" genre stories I've seen since Happy Sugar Life.

    • @PurKidz
      @PurKidz 2 місяці тому +25

@@logikx1325 I understand what you're trying to say, but I sort of disagree. I don't recommend things I know someone won't like, because I understand we're different people with different views. I can't call my friends butthurt for being intolerant to things I'm tolerant to. However, being judgemental is indeed unnecessary and I agree that those kinds of people aren't worth associating with.

      Starter Anime:
"anime that don't feel like anime"
(anime for people new to anime or anime for non-anime fans)
(age of viewer needs to be taken into consideration though of course, as some of these are more mature anime, so might not be good for younger viewers, even if they're good for those new to anime or who're non-anime fans)
(generally, quirky = common anime characteristics/culture/themes/tropes/etc, and fanservice/ecchi-ness/lewdness, aren't good for people new to anime or who're non-anime fans, you want to stay away from these, until they get used to anime a bit more, so that its "culture shock" won't be so great, when/if they do encounter it with watching other/more anime, lol, so while there's some/many otherwise really good starter anime, they got too much of the fanservice/ecchiness/lewdness, and/or, the "quirky" culture shocks/humor, for them to be starter anime)
      (not ranked, just listed)
      1. Full Metal Alchemist
      and/or
      2. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
      2. Attack On Titan
      3. Death Note
      4. Monster (I've not seen it, so I don't know what's in it, but if they're into criminality/psychological-terror/murderers-psychopaths-sociopaths/etc, this may be good for them)
      4. Berserk
      5. Claymore
      6. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
      7. Black Lagoon
      8. The Big O
      9. Samurai Champloo
      10. Rurouni Kenshin (especially Samurai X: the 3-4 part OVAs of kenshin's origins)
      11. Cowboy Bebop
      12. Nana (for girls, so, I've not seen it, so not sure if this is a good anime for people new to anime or for non-anime fans, but it is known as one the best animes for females of all time, though this may not translate to being good for an introduction to anime)
      13. Violet Evergarden
      14. Baccano
      15. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
      16. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (as a mecha, and deep/advanced subject: behaviorism, and political, anime, it's not for everyone, but otherwise it's very "western" / non-anime-like, and has great english dub too)
      17. Blood+ (while this is unfortunately not for everyone, got to be patient with it, it's a good anime for those new to anime and/or who're non-anime fans)
      18. Demon Slayer
      19. Hunter x Hunter
      20. Parasyte
      -----
if people like the gruesome horror anime and/or torture/death/etc stuff anime, then such anime may be good for them, it depends what else is within those anime for such people... lol
(I don't like this type of stuff, so I can't talk about such anime)
(some examples: Devilman: Crybaby, Another, Tokyo Ghoul, Higurashi no naku koro ni = US: When they cry, Shiki, Deadman Wonderland, Parasyte)

I'm watching Frieren both with my mom, and with my dad and godfather. I somehow managed to gush about it enough to convince both my parents to separately watch it with me, and dad and I roped in my godfather as well since he's the advisor for the anime club at his school and is always looking for good material. So far, they're all not quite as absorbed in it as I was, but seem to be enjoying it quite a bit - mom and I had a long and interesting discussion about the morality of demons, and she's ended up pushing me to keep setting aside the time to watch together more than I've pushed her, whereas my dad and godfather have been a bit less deeply drawn in but are starting to really get hooked as of ep12. I'm meeting up with the latter two for episodes 13-16 tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to their reactions to Sein's arc.

The bit near the end was the first time I've heard the enjoyment of watching media with others properly expressed. That it's a way to connect with others. I've found myself watching and rewatching the first few episodes of frieren over and over again trying to see it from my wife's point of view, to see if she would enjoy it. And while the pure joy I feel when I can share something I love with her and she loves it back is intoxicating, the fear of her not enjoying it also breeds feelings of rejection and insecurity. Almost as if my appreciation of the art and themes provided by the show is an extension of me, ergo not enjoying it is somehow a personal attack towards me. Showing someone a show seems so trivial, yet to those who place so much value into them and the themes they carry it can be a very vulnerable experience. Anyways, all this is a very long winded way to say your video gave me the courage to try and show her this show. Wish me luck lol

Im currently watching vinland saga with her as she really also like historical stories that she gets something from, whether that is knowledge or a lesson (her favorite show is Ertrugul). Im an adult (Female)with my own place. And living away from her, i came to the realization of how differently people think, meaning i have to give a long exposition to make people understand what I thought while my family understands it immediately. and that what i get out of stories and media is so different from others while its so similar to my mom. Its something that i hold close to me and a bond that i don't share even with friends i feel. Only spending time and living with someone can create that bond.

I agree so much with everything you had to say about how special it feels to share media with loved ones, especially when you watch things together. I’ve enjoyed watching several different anime with different friends and family members (which is why I’ve seen AoT about six times) and there’s just something so warm about getting to talk about it together, and sharing the excitement, sadness, suspense, and all the other emotions with someone you love.
I’m also usually super picky about what anime I show my grandma since originally she had a very poor opinion on it. I’d always make sure it was something finished and that I’d watched all the way through, but I started watching Frieren with her after only about seven episodes were out and I’m really glad I did.

Unfortunately I will never get the chance to share Friren or any of my current favourite media with her as she passed away in 2017. I know for a fact she would've loved it and one of the things I miss most is watching something as thought provoking and blissful as Friren and not being able to share it with her, especially given how close we were.
I still have many friends and my sister that remind me of her and that I will definitely share these experiences with but I just wanted to let you know how happy it makes me to see a video like yours reminding people to share what you enjoy with those closest to you.
If I could share just one more thing with my mum now, I think Friren would be one of the first to come to mind.

I think anime Frieren brings back the freshness of the Adventure Fantasy anime with slice of life where we as viewer's can relate to some in the show. Frieren shows us the importance of Time how time is relative and significant to our lives. Into how we spend that time with our love one's and friends and family, Frieren shows us the core aspect to what's being human or some point a living being in this world. Memories we create the experience we've been and living that moment in time is what the show's all about. The exploration of our importance and finding the meaning in life or our purpose in life is what drives this anime so much immersive and fun to watch, also the OST is so amazing...

Recently, I was invited to an orchestra concert by a friend of mine from Uni. The theme of that evening's performances was songs from anime and video games. I recognised many of them. Zelda, Ultraman, Attack on Titan and so forth. However, one song stood out to me so much and it was really hard for me to understand why until I thought about it a bit more. That song that they played was the ending credits song for "Frieren".
Now, undoubtedly, my favourite ost from the anime is the first intro song but upon hearing the outro at the concert I was nearly moved to tears. This has only ever happened for songs like "Dragon Ball GT's" "Dandan Kokoro Hikareteku". In that instance, it was because the song filled me with a nostalgic whimsy like no other could. In "Frieren's" case though, it was because it reminded me how much the show means to me. Since I'm a nihilist, I relate a lot with Frieren in the sense that I don't want to regret the way I use my time while I live mostly because I'm not immortal like she is. It is my belief and to my knowledge that this is the only life I'll ever have and watching Frieren provides comfort to harsh existential truths.
P.S. I wrote this comment to gaslight you into making a video about "Frieren's" music. Also, pls shout out my friend Amare, they're the one who finally got me to watch this series. Much love pey.

This is a surprisingly serendipitous video. My mom doesn't watch anime but she does like animated movies, particularly from Studio Ghibli, so this year for mother's day my brother got her When Marnie was here, which gave me the idea to show her Frieren. We're 6 episodes in right now

funny enough I suggest watching frieren with my mum back in march thinking that she would like it and then this video pops in my recommended. I really wanted to watched the anime due to how chill it was ( and given that we prior to watching frieren only watched darker animes). Because it is a lot more slower paced but is able to give that time to characters fleshing them out.
Ps She likes it, her fav character is Stark (his my fav as well)

Hey man I love your analysis on anime (even if its mostly Frieren so far).
I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel because now I'm curious about other creators that analyze anime as well.
Also, I too think that fantasy is a bit played out and that's why I don't watch it, but theres a very small chance I may watch this anime even though ik some major parts of it thanks to your video series. It's a different pace than the popular shonen anime I generally watch like demon slayer and MHA.
Keep up the great work! 💪🏾

My parents aren’t fans of anime and there’s a lot of shows that I love but know I will never be able to show them because they have some parts or tropes that would put them off. Freiren though, I have been able to show them. It was something I felt very confident about because there was nothing in it that I thought would make them uncomfortable. It’s probably one of the most approachable anime ever made

I watched this series with my mom for the exact reasons you described and it also reminded me that years ago I'd watched Fullmetal Alchemist with her. They're distinct, though, because I can't recall if we ever finished FMA but she was very invested in Frieren with a little help from me explaining things. She's an immigrant who didnt really grow up with western traditional fantasy to fall back on, but I think that makes the show even more amazing for being able to enrapture her the way it did -- learning the concepts for the first time in such an expertly crafted story and magic system. The only shame is that it really is hard to point her to anything else so mainstream in genre and universally good if it isn't specifically an anime about inspiration learning and refining a craft (without any quirky tropes) like Blue Period. The only other anime she likes is Spy x Family but that's just because she adores children; the greater war and spy plots will often fly over her head.

Frieren is one of the ones I got my parents both to watch. Violet Evergarden was another. Madoka Magica…well, the dad didn’t make it to the third episode so if you know, you know and why he dropped it because of it being too magical-girly.
Not really an anime household…hell I’m not even _that_ big an anime person myself, but if you pick the right ones you can have a good time.

I briefly talked to my mom about Frieren and one of the things I said was that there are magic spells of all kinds, including one that does the laundry (it's the spell that Fern asks from Serie in the last episode). My mom told me that she would like to have that spell. I also sent her four music tracks from the show and she enjoyed them. She said that they are 'melodious and dynamic'. Last but not least, I showed her a plastic figure of Frieren, a plastic figure of Fern and a Frieren plushie that I bought. She thought they were charming and well-made. I doubt she would ever watch the show though...
But honestly, I think Violet Evergarden would be far more approachable for a mother to watch. It's definitely less bizzare than Frieren. For example, it has no hideous monsters and no eerie superpowers which typically appeal to young people.

Frieren is a series that you might find a bit boring at the start by as each episode passes you find yourself falling more and more for the story, the world, and its characters. It's the kinda thing that I feel the majority of people will enjoy if they give it a proper chance.

After the last episode ended she turned to me and said: "You know, son, now I understand why you youth get triggered when anime is called silly cartoons", lol. After that we watched the Promised Neverland (S1 only), Noragami, attempted watching Dr. Stone, watched the whole Mushoku Tensei and, of course, Frieren.
Unlike most of other animes we watched Frieren "from scratch", I haven't watched it before her, so we both were in the same shoes. Gosh, she loved every single bit of it! I'm not sure, but I think it became one of her favourite ones.

I remember about 15 years ago my mom and my aunts watched Claymore. They loved it. I grew up in a family where domestic violence was unfortunately very common. One of my aunts had a black eye every month because of her boyfriend at the time. I feel that for them, seeing those brave and powerful women fight somehow gave them strenght to seek help.
I am a great fan of Neon Genesis Evangelion and also want my mom to watch it, now I will put Frieren on the same list.
