I'd add that the longer-lasting discussions generated by the 3-episodes-per-week structure doesn't just help Arcane to be successful as a product, but also understood as a piece of art. People pointed out so many things I missed on first viewing, and the week between each act also let me stew in my own thoughts about the show instead of just forgetting. I definitely wouldn't have been able to digest all the things I enjoy about Arcane if the first season came out all at once.
This made me realise I only remember as much as I do about season 1 thanks to a lot of video essays discussing it over the last three years. I watched it all in one sitting because I started the show the final weekend of s1’s release.
i still think we should go back to the 1 episode a week for most shows, binging is fun but it's over so quick and i always feel drained afterwards. making a good season of a show you're falling in love with last several months is something i used to hate as a teenager but now can't get enough of.
I KNOW what’s coming and it hurts anyways. I rewatch s1 all the time and it still feels brand new all the time even though I can literally quote a lot of it 😂 I wish I could rewatch it again SO BAD
I think this show is one of the greatest pieces of art to ever be created. The writing, the animation, the sound, and even the shot-style are all perfect. It sets the bar so high that every other type of animation seems less than by comparison. I don't even play League of Legends so I can watch this as pure entertainment not necessarily something that is on my game radar.
Another great example of long pilots having a great impact on the success of a show is Oshi no Ko. The premiere was an unheard of 90 minutes, practically a movie. However, it fit the story telling structure so well and is considered one of the best first episodes of an anime of all time. I love that TV shows and anime are getting more experimental with their release formats. I really think it's proving to be a great idea
What's cool is that each music number in S2 Act 1 mirrors in presentation a similar sequence over S1 (e.g. Firelights music intro vs Caitlyn's strike force music intro). S2 Act 1 is introducing not just the story that came before, but also it's cinematography and artstyle to a new and returning audience.
wow you really put into words what i was thinking about the 3 act release too! it creates the perfect balance between having enough to talk about while not waiting too long for the next episode, i really hope shows like stranger things will adapt this form of release as it is just sooo exciting! i also really appreciated the schnee mention, as he was the one that really got me thinking about entertainment as art and deeper meanings of shows, im also excited to check your channel out! great work!
THIS VIDEO IS NOT SPONSORED BY PEY!!! Congrats!!! You deserve it!!! I will also say, every time you release a video, I get renewed motivation to write my DND content.
I think what also benefits from the 3 episode drop is attention span. People do not like waiting on set up and world/character introduction. They want to get to the pay off so dropping all the build up at once makes it seem like they are getting to the "good stuff" faster and thus, they are willing to stick around longer.
I was talking with friends about this exact topic and how clever is the three episodes a week format, glad to see you post about it ! Also, congrats on the sponsorship !!
A good way I stop myself from having super high expectations for a media is to consider what we have as the start. Season 2 is the end, not a continuation, this mindset let me turn off the critical part of my brain and have fun with every episode. Part 2 comes out in 6 minutes and I am watching it asap
Yo super off topic but I didnt realize you were Pey the musician. Didn't realize you are a goat in 2 different subjects. Been watching all your freiren videos and just want to say hi from the Atrioc Community,
Thanks for this vide. I sont know why but this Series hits so different than anyehing else. I just love it so much. Watching your video talking about its bety just makes me feel to cry out of joy :D
A big thing for me with any media is suspension of disbelief. What impresses me the most about Arcane is how solid the worldbuilding and its characters are. They did an excellent job staying true to the core of the characters while at the same time making them believable, tangible beings. The stories feel fleshed out and properly weaved without feeling too forced or unrealistic for the world. What also certainly helped was the seasonal trailers Riot makes for League. Almost all of them are masterpieces in short storytelling with good music (particularly fond of The Call, that brings me to tears every single time). It also makes me sad that Legends of Runeterra, the now slowly abandoned Riot card game that did so much to help expand the universe didn't get a spot in the light with Arcane...
I personally didn't have a problem with the dialogue. My personal gripe with the first act had more to do with the pacing. I felt there were moments that were sped through. But the show is still fantastic and I understood why they sped through it
having finished the 2nd act I definitely think the 3 episode structure works extremely well as despite full on crying for the first time in years and cause of a netflix series no less, I've been able to see other peoples insights and marinate in my own thoughts, even if only subconsciously at times, the space between acts and even between the first and second season allow the stories to organically grow and almost GAIN momentum or atleast retain it where as if it dropped all at once you'd have the binge watchers going crazy of the ending while some people haven't even finished half of it, everyones in the same place, everyone gets to talk about it together, bounce ideas and discussions off each other and gain a greater appreciation for it on another note holy fuck ep 6 has scarred me for life they did not have to one up themselfs from episode 3 for the first season man ;_;
Kinda funny how at 4:33 you even listed Valorant that has nothing to do with the runterra universe, but skipped Legends of Runterra which is (or was now I guess) the game for people who wanted to dive deeper into the universe.
It still sorta is, there was actually a frame from season 2 episode 4 used in one of Warwicks cards before the episode came out, credited to Fortiche as a «hint». The story is a bit told through flavor text, but it IS there.
@ yeah, most new content is driven by path of champions, and to be fair they seem to be investing quite a bit into it, but overall i feel LoR is best as a competitive tcg… and the fact that they used arcane screenshots instead of new art is actually a big budget issue.
I think the Netflix model of releasing whole seasons has done a lot of damage to retaining relevance in the public consciousness. I've been actively trying to watch new stuff at a slower pace so that it sticks with me. If I binge watch a season of something, I think back a few weeks later and can't remember much.
Lots of approaches being explored ATM with how to breakup consumption of media. Three very different examples: Demon Slayer Movie set a push for canon anime show movies. DanDaDan had a 3 episode (THREE) theatre release months prior. That creates hype. And one show that didn't do a 3-part release, but that should've and the story was divided into 3 parts: One Piece Live Action. It's audience already is used to weekly episodes/manga and new audiences would stay in tune longer. Show did fantastic, but would've been longer lasting. Great video. Would be interesting to explore this concept for other show release schedules and budgets/constraints.
I am one of the few people who think s2 writing is not as good as s1. The thing which I had immediate issue with was that the writers did not explain properly the passage of time between the terrorist attack and Jayce fixing the gauntlets and making Caitlyn's the gun. This lack of uncertainty led to rushed drama between Vi and her. There are missing pieces of char. development between those two. The growth of Caitlyn after the dead of her mother is understandable but we had just few scenes showing us her internal struggle before turning to this zealot of revenge. Also the dialog between those two was clunky at times. Jinx's plan to paint Piltover also was not build properly. It just happened. It seems its so easy to go around this city which is under siege. Again her plan might have been executed in this time frame when Jayce fixed the prop. Who knows. I don't like the fight scenes either. It remind me of Zack Snyder's obsession with slow mo. It makes the scenes prolonged. The camera editing makes those fights hard to follow. Art is prioritized over substance and logic. Also the music montages are happening too often. In s1 there was only few and they were on levels which to this day cannot be reached, Elko vs Jinx being the top. Now every episode there is at least 1. With that being said the season is magnificent. It is just not on the level of s1.
I dont agree with everything here, but the writing and pacing has definetly taken a few hits comparativley, thats true. In my view everything is still logically consistent, but a lot of interesting or important scenes are skipped/only shown in montage or implied and a lot of stuff is left for the audience to infere or guess. Nothing too detrimental so far, but definetly noticable.
Firefly was way ahead of it's time, because the original pilot was supposed to be two hours, fleshing out the main cast and providing an explanation of how they all came to be on Serenity at the same time, despite the wide array of characters. Unfortunately, FOX decided they needed to grab the viewers in the first hour and forced the writers to come up with what was chronologically the second episode, the train job. What's worse is that FOX also continued to release episodes out of order, making any hope at following an overarching story impossible.
@@upg5147remember that arcane is really only one big arc. The sub-arcs are what separate the releases of the episodes. If is just one simple journey, then is it really all that interesting. If characters don’t grow in any way, or the world doesn’t change at all, then is there really much story?
I remember LOST had a 2 hour pilot, and they usually combined the last couple episodes for a 2-3 hour finale every season. That structure and pacing always felt very satisfying, like true must-see 'event' television.
honestly I already know the show is done and ready. These "weekly" release are for you to stay subscribed to their service. But if they gonna do this, that means they're gonna do a 2 cliff hanger, in a 3 part release. This is could make or break the story flow if it's done incorrectly.
eh, i think this is a good way to do it. Its enough content with each release (about 2 hours) to be juicy and substantive, but it leaves enough time between the episodes and enough time in the public eye to really settle into peoples minds. With one week between each arc you get to think about it, rewatch it, analyse it, really get into the weeds, but also dont have to wait too long for the continuation. Of course its a marketing tactic, but it has benefits for the consumer as well. The Bingewatching encouraged by all the full released seasons over the last few years has really damaged Peoples attentionspan and media literacy.
@@datzfatz2368 I agree. The attention span of great shows before this release method was gone and done so fast. But I don't want show to fall into this we need 2 cliff hanger trope as well.
Why it is so good is that it is fueled by money coming from somewhere else. Maybe that is the key to good art and science as well. To be allowed to be free.
This popped up randomly after i watched watched arc 2. Though its still good things felt rushed and i am worried abour the payoff for everything they jave been setting since they are billing this as the end for these characters
BIG HEADS UP PEY !!!!! arcane is not 1:1 of original league lore it has been stated arcane IS overwriting current league lore, best example is viktor who originally literally had 0 motive
It’s not changing tv it’s that the west is dumb when it comes to streaming. They bundle release everything and think the hype will be there when people can just binge it and move on. People have been showing for YEARS that the weekly release schedule is still good and prolonged the amount of eyes of your product. Just like when things were on basic cable or now with anime/manga. Giving people time to sit on what they watched is a good thing
Well, thats how a series works. Or should've worked. It's just that netflix broke the thing that made siries work as a genre. And arcane tried their best to compromise. And suddenly, if we fix what was broken - it starts to work. Sadly no-one gonna help other series, that were fucked by dumb netflix rules. RIP jojo fridays
Ah, the quaint idea that 2 hours is the upper limit for a movie these days. :) Just kidding, I do think most movies should be two hours and these three hour behemoths we see everywhere should almost all be edited down.
I don't think its holding up. The story is clearly rushed, plot beats that could use some development are given one or two scenes. Some characters deviate a lot from their initial story promise, so many story become stupid just to allow Jinx's waky ideas to work. To many musical introductions, pointless fights, and so much fanservice for no reason at all. But, the worst of it? It seems the show is as interested or more in setting up future content, than it is in telling the story they had going on already. Arcane 1 is a masterpiece in story telling, Arcane 2, so far, is way more in line with the videogame adaptation slop we got in the past.
I love the 3 long episodes and then a short waiting time, im tired of other series doing season whatever part 1 where you have to wait months and months just for the second half of a single season
I don't know what you see in it, season 2 so far has felt directionless, rushed, and frantic. Not even close to the cohesive vision of s1. Visuals are still top notch, I suppose.
Wait. Didn't you have a great video about Arcane season 1 a few years back? I think I remember this profile picture. edit: yes he is - ua-cam.com/video/mVw4PdhgI90/v-deo.html
I feel like Arcane fundamentally fails as a marketing tool. None of the things I love the show for is present in riot games. There is no story, no character drama. Compared to the look of the show the games just look bland and disappointing from the visuals to the animations. No matter how great the show is it doesn’t bring me any closer to playing a riot game. It’s great art though and if it advertises anything then it is animation as an art form.
Yes, looking good doesn't necessarily mean being good, but what exactly about S2 is not good, except for the pacing which is understandably fast because the events of S1 triggered many of the things in S2. Arcane, including S2 is the best piece of media ever created imo.
looking good is definetly a reason why Arcane is good, because it doesnt look "good", it looks absolutely insanely good. If you know anything about animation on a technical level and how Fortiche animates, you HAVE to appreciate it as a simple technical achievment and for the ammount of work, effort and love put into it. And while i do also think that this second season has been a bit lesser on the writing front as Season 1, it still very high quality and way above most of the shows and movies coming out nowadays. It could have benefitted from an additional finale arc, 3 extra episodes so it wouldnt have to be as compressed as it is, but even without that its still great.
The lore was your least favorite part of League? That's... a new and unexplored take.
I love the 3 long episodes and then a short waiting time, im tired of other series doing season whatever part 1 where you have to wait months and months just for the second half of a single season
❤ Thank you!
league lore is really good for the same reason arcane is good...
That is horrible. Netflix needs to stick to their original format.
All episodes being dropped all at once is really stupid tbh
just watched act 2 what the fuck how do they keep doing it
I feel like Arcane fundamentally fails as a marketing tool. None of the things I love the show for is present in riot games. There is no story, no character drama. Compared to the look of the show the games just look bland and disappointing from the visuals to the animations. No matter how great the show is it doesn’t bring me any closer to playing a riot game. It’s great art though and if it advertises anything then it is animation as an art form.
the league trashing is crazy😭0:07
Ayo 👀
No it's not.
None of this is groundbreaking new.
season 2 is a big letdown... unbearable 2 watch just because it looks good doesnt mean it IS good!
