Welcome to The Sailing Chef... A Chanel dedicated to sailing, cooking, exploring and general boat life.
We are Carl and Charlie (Charlotte) and want to take you on our adventures finding and sourcing the best produce and cooking it up in our tiny galley! We believe in eating the best possible food at all times and with Carls training as a chef in a former career want to show you how you can do it to.
We plan to sail off one day when we are ready to go and travel the UK and then the world... All in good time!
We thought we would start our boat life video diary to keep our memories along the way showing the ups and downs and our learning curve.
We only started sailing a year ago and have a lot to learn!
We hope you enjoy it.

SOLO SAILING - To nowhere in particular! EAST COAST UK
Just me on a boat sailing this time with nowhere to go and a time to get back so at 4kts I didnt get far. Just out to sea and back!
Sailing down the River Orwell and past Felixstowe Docks and Harwich I head out to the North Sea to get as far as I can, which was just out to sea. I got to The maze point / Medusa Chanel and then had to turn back for a down wind sail back to the marina.
It was a very relaxing sail with the perfect 10-12kts of wind and the sea slight.
Unfortunately no cooking due to the provisioning run being a failure but the day was about sailing for me!
It was lovely to finally get back out under full canvas!
As always thank you for watching.

So we've been gone a while now and the reasons have been multiple. We have been out sailing but in the interest of not repeating ourselves I have not been filming our day sails on the Orwell and Stour! I give a brief on where we've been and what's been going on in our world and then get back to an episode filmed back in MAY! Serious delay in getting this out I know. For numerous reasons I wante...
UP EARLY FOR A SAIL ON THE NORTH SEA COAST (EP.27)

So in this one we head Back from the River Crouch to the home birth in the River Orwell. It was an early start again to catch the tides and a motor for 2/3s of the trip. The sunrise was amazing and always makes the early starts a great thing! I think I prefer a sunrise to a sun set!? Finally the wind filled in and we had 14kts to enjoy the rest of the sail home. There was a virtually non existe...

Thats right... I go over the side into the murky river Crouch in an attempt to clean the hull and prop!! I fail miserably due to the temperature... and currents... oh and the fact I couldn't hold my breath for longer than 30 seconds! We continue our journey up and down the river Crouch, ground from Burnham Marina to Fambridge Moorings and then back again ready for our departure. We take a very ...

Soooo... this time we go on a trip to the River Crouch and visit Burnham Marina, Fambridge Marina, and do A LOT of motoring.. We will take it as this is our first long trip with the little one and at 8 months we would like to make it as smooth as possible. Its a lot to learn and get used to as I am now single handing the boat and dealing with virtually all of the sailing, mooring etc (Charlie d...

I always strive for honesty and clarity and the truth is in the title, unless of course you enjoy watching a little day sail then here it is, but in truth we shoot these videos for our family and as a great diary and sometimes it may not be that interesting for the masses. We are planning a few trips and some boat work soon but until the temperature picks up a little at night we don't want to s...

So we've been away for a while as our lives have changed somewhat with the new arrival. We have been out a few times on short sails on the East Coast Rivers Orwell & Stour but trying to figure out the new routine with the little one meant filming had to take a back seat! On top of that with the weather that we have been plagued with over the last few months, chuck in Christmas etc it's been a w...

We complete our LONGEST passage yet.. In THICK FOG & -1!! (It was AMAZING!) EP.5 - The Sailing Chef
In 30 years time this golden period of your life will appear to have passed in a flash. My humble suggestion is that you make the most of time with the new crew member now and sail as a family only when it is warm and gentle on the water. Love the combination of your personalities and good grub on a small boat. Thanks
@@freddyrassinger8198 thank you Freddy! I concur.. we’re already wondering where on earth the first year went. Making the most of every minute together. We’re very lucky and as you say will only be going out together when comfortable for all. The baby will always come first! Thank you for kind and wise words 🙏❤️
Sounds like a Yanmar
@@SailWhiskeyDream indeed it is 👍
Lovely day for a sail even if it’s a wee tootle around
@@MrMikeydrum absolutely mate. As long as I’m floating it’s all good 👍
Best thing for your log being on a river with high growth is to remove it after sailing and installing it before you go out.
@@SailingInScotland fair point. I just hate the clean up and opening the hole in the bottom of the boat. I’ll have to live with it for now 👍
Another great sail, i have caught up to date now. I look forward to seeing more from you. Thanks for all the great videos.
@@SailingInScotland thank you so much for your support! I need to get out in the freezing weather now 🤣
Great job, there's no really good way to clean the bottom without a dryout against a wall or haulout. You definitely keep her looking good.
@@SailingInScotland thank you mate, yes I learnt the hard way. I do try. It’s so easy to let them go as it happens so quick! 👍
Very nice video, keep them coming.
@@SailingInScotland will do! Thank you as always 🙏
Glad to see the recipe in the writeup. Good to see you getting out, a little one makes it more difficult but also rewarding. Good to get her started early. Look forward to seeing you again.
@@SailingInScotland absolutely mate, it’s great having her aboard and gives a different enjoyment. Albeit stresses me out more 🤣 yes I did mean to do the recipes but as I don’t get a huge amount of comments or feedback yet I wasn’t sure what’s really working or not. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment and feedback and for watching of course 🙏🙏🙏
Another great video. You are definitely getting better at sailing single handed.
@@SailingInScotland thank you 🙏 and thank you. That’s encouraging to hear. Slowly, slowly but you know the old saying.. practice makes…. you slightly more confident but still overthinking everything you do on a sailboat 🤣👍
@11:31 I notice you have your headsail control sheet going back to a block then going forward to the winch. Have you tried just going directly to the winch? On my little boat the winch is in a similar place, and I have a block aft of the winch but I have never used it, up to now I have just taken the sheet directly to the winch. It tends to bind up. The boat is on the hard now so I can't check what it would do if I use the block.
@@earthstick I haven’t to be honest. It’s how it was set up and had been since new so didn’t want to mess around. (My experience level doesn’t tend to stray to far 🤣) I have used just a block to winch with the spinnaker which works ok but like you said can ride. 👍
@@Thesailing_chef I'm learning as well. Thanks.
@ we never stop mate 👍
The issue with binding is what the block is designed to eliminate. If the angle going onto the winch drum is too much it cause binding and overwrapping.
@@SailingInScotland I'm going to have to try using the block next season.
I enjoy hanging around Pin Mill as much as anything!.. I am at Shotly at the moment but I will be sailing out of Pin Mill next season.. My last boat was a 44ft Smack called Our Boys... Now?.. A Hurley 22r!.. lol
@@stevenwatsham5973 excellent. I love Pin Mill and particularly the Butt and Oyster! Both fab boats I am sure and the views and being out on the water is what it’s all about! I will keep an eye out 👀😁 each time we pass! 👍
Great job mooring up in the berth. Very much enjoyed this video, sometimes raw is the best.
@@SailingInScotland yes I agree, it’s the sort of video I enjoy. And thank you 🙏 I think slow is the best way 👍
Sewing your new line to the old line works much better. It's more secure, no thicker than the original line, and won't pull apart like tape may.
@@SailingInScotland sound advice. I need to do the main halyard soon so will employ this! 👍
The advantage to go across an area with little depth as the tide rises is if you do drag you'll be on a rising tide so it should push you off.
@@SailingInScotland 100%. We pushed the timing on this one quite a bit but it was a rising tide. The general advice for this entrance is 2hr before HW but as we only draw 1.45m we had enough although it did go to 1.9m at one point 😬
Don't beat yourself up, I've been sailing for ten years , when after not sailing all winter I started out for a sail and left the electric cord plugged into shore😂.
@@SailingInScotland 🤣 it’s to easily done! To keen to get the sails up 🤣🙈
Just found your channel and decided to watch from the beginning. Really enjoying them and look forward to more.
Thank you! Very pleased you’ve enjoyed so far! Thank you for taking the time to comment also. And hopefully we will get to Scotland 🏴 one day to see the beautiful sites!! I have heard wonderful things! 🙏👍
It’s nice getting out for a relaxing tootle around
@@WavedancerWesterlyfulmar absolutely can’t beat it 👍🙏
We don’t get proper sailing until wind is 14-16 knots because Wave Dancer is so heavy. How’s your darling wee one? Guess not so wee & getting into mischief 😂
@@WavedancerWesterlyfulmar indeed she is thank you. She’s growing fast and changing and has a complete obsession with every line and sheet that is in the danger zone 🤣 I’m cooking all her meals so her standards are high and she’s learning the good stuff early 👍 Wow I bet, one of the perks of a smaller boat I guess although when the wind picks up I wish I had a tanker 🤣🤷♂️
nice. i will be out there soon i hope.
@@eddiegranville3384 I’ll keep an eye out sir 👍

@@nigellee3687 Great stuff Nigel. It’s a great place to learn to sail. Well done on the CC course. I found them all a great foundation. I will do. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment 👍🙏
We gave up on our log a few years ago, we just use SOG on the plotter / phones. We can roughly work out STW by looking at the chart but only bother if there’s a lot of tide and we have a deadline to meet, rest of the time we ignore it and enjoy the sailing I loved your video - it reminded me of some of the early Keep Turning Left ones - quietly drifting along in no hurry - perfect 👍
@@sailingbluedawn thank you 🙏 Yes I think you may have a point there, I’ll give it another few cleans and see. It’s not essential like you said as I have the iPad etc, it’s more annoying as I like things working 🤣. That’s a lovely thing to say although it’ll be along time before I have Dylan’s confidence ☝️😬🤣 Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
Nice to see you back on the water, we remove the speed log after every sail etc and stick the blank in, bit of a faf I know but it seems to be the only way. Cheers Irvine and Jane (Alana)
@@irvinewright8543 thank you both. Ah yes I feared that may be the case. It used to be ok for 6 months or so but now seems to be clogging after every use! I think it may be the only way. Hope you are both well 👍🙏

@@andybooth28 🤣 I’m working through the proposals as we speak 👌
Hi guys, lovin the content 👍🏽⛵️I might be wrong but it looks like you’ve painted the anode on the prop? I think the anode is supposed to be unpainted and so is the bit of the prop in touches. You can check that there is no resistance between prop and anode using a multimeter and that will tell you if its installed and working correctly. ⛵️😁
@@sailingpretenderbyeastcoas7494 thank you. Nice boat. What’s the top speed under motor for this?
Hi there, thank you! good question, with a clean hull she will do around 5-6kts at about 2500 rpm. We’ve got a 2 blade fixed prop so probably not the most economical but is plenty for the boat. She’s comfortable around 2400-2700 rpm. 👍 Currently she needs a clean so is doing around 4kts flat out at 3000 🤣
i dont know what it is but i cant stand food thats been in cling film for extended periods of time. it taints it and ruins it for me. great video tho.
Fair enough, it can be substituted with baking paper or just straight in a tin, it just makes the handling easier 👍
This will take you back! Dangerously GOOD… 3oz Cocoa powder 9oz Butter 9oz Golden Syrup 9oz Sugar 12oz Cornflakes 1. Crush cornflakes 2. Melt the cocoa, butter, sugar and golden syrup together in a pan - doesn't need to be hot just all melted together. 3. Mix cornflakes and melted mix all together in a big bowl - crunching as you go 4. Line a flat tray or shaped tin with cling film 5. Put mix in tray and squish down as hard as you can 6. Leave to cool 7. Put in fridge for a couple of hours (or as long as you can wait) 8. Tip onto cutting surface and chop into pieces - no rules on size here 9. Eat and remember what heaven tastes like (!)
