Toyota Tacoma Smart Alternator Test (Bench Test)
Testing a new "smart" alternator from a 3rd gen (2018) Toyota Tacoma was not as straight forward as I thought. Toyota alternators are now controlled by the ECU/ECM via a serial bus protocol. I was able to use an arduino to send the proper ECM commands and verify the alternator output.

Greetings, this video was really informative on how the Lin terminals works on alternators but could you please clarify how i can aquire the pwm device you used to emulate a Lin signal to the regulator?
I used Arduino and a TTL_UART to LIN bus adapter. I had to bit bang the UART to implement the communication protocol
It's a pain on the ass
Very detailed. I just could not take the shaky cam effect. I am currently using your audio while watching a German dude take one apart ...
For 120.00 bucks my machine shop man will have a perfect surface on my cyl head in a jiffy.
Right! Good to know people!
320 on Subaru.
Very helpful, did not realize the left side was reverse threaded.
You talk to much. You sound like you like little boys too 🤦🏾♂️
hi, I'm Italian to do the calibration like this on a mini 3 pro, can you help me?? thanks nice video
In case you don't have a 15mm wrench, this can be done with a 6mm allen wrench as there is a 6mm hexagonal socket on the back of the screw 👍
Very good video thank you'
Is it the same as the stock 2.5L you could do it on the vehicle?
PLEASE READ BEFORE DISASSEMBLING! Im writing this as a warning and to expound on comments by @djMusicKey and @paulius8588. Before you do anything, be sure to check underneath the upper body shell for two screws. If you look at the bottom of the mavic air, slightly hidden behind the gimbal is where they should be. I should mention, there is also a possibility that your specific model does not have these screws, but I would suggest making sure. (Feel free to skip the rest of this comment) Side note, I cannot stress enough that you can’t get too frustrated when disassembling a device. I should’ve known better, but I ended up pulling mine apart when I should’ve searched for an alternative solution. In the end it was my fault, but just keep that in mind.
Yea it’s fusstrading
Thank you thank you!!!! So helpful!
Is it worth it?
Super helpful
When I tighten the axle nut, its hard to turn around the hub? Anyone has some tips?
I wanna see the engineer who designed this truck tell me how to change these belts. See if they are like, "why is it so hard to get to this damn bolt."
how did it hold up? Doing it to my EJ25 right now
What sand paper did you use, ill be doing this soon since there are no machine shops near me
Pretty straight foward and to the point. Good job bro🙏
And what's the point? Does it work?
Is it common for the axle to rust heavily? Mine destroyed the new seal from how badly it was rusted. I have to get a new axle and seals
thank you!
you have the most complete and thorough demonstration and explanation of replacing these bearings I have seen so far.
Thanks for doing this. My Mavic Air unexpectedly dropped into the sea this morning. I had to wait until the tide had gone out before I could look for it. I found it but it was covered in sand and also has sand on the inside and in the motors and other moving parts. I'm going to try to repair it but if I can't then I'll sell the parts as spares or repair.
Very good video. I’m just about to tackle this job and your tips and tricks are very helpful, thanks.
Thanks much for this. I most like autopsy reviews, I take things apart as well to see what makes them "tick", if there is really any ticking going on heh.
So would I need to split the motor to reach rod 1s bearing
When you ready to test that drone I bet you don’t know how to set it back up
This is my second time watching this video and the level of detail is really amazing. Good job 10/10!!

@@olimgn5688 mate, I have the same problem. Where I have to put it?
------>>> I had the same issue. Guess how I fixed it....I have hit it few times by the door frame exactly where the IMU is. I only had to calibrate the compass after all. All errors gone now! Worth checking before dismantle. I suppose it was just the cable that got loose where the IMU is or shock reset it... Anyway - try this first!
That truck is rusted beyond crazy.thats why it's seized all over.
Damn bro, this was a marathon effort with all the seized bolts, but you completed the job! Good video angles
I can't get my fire ring to disappear lol....I just can't bring myself to mount the heads with it still being visible even tho I can't feel it lol
Huh!
Halo,, Do you know calibration gimbal for Mavic Mini 1 or 2 ?
Man i have been spoiled with my volvo. Fuck this noise.
Whats the signal on the controller wire look like I believe I have a problem with this circuit on my truck
The communication protocol between the ECU and Alternator is LIN bus. I sniffed communication between my alternator and ECU in my truck so that I could replay the master commands on a test bench (ECU is master, Alternator is slave node). I used an Arduino and bit bang the protocol.
@@peak_ascendr9960 Hi Peak could you explain in more detail please how did you program the arduino what signals, I really want to fit a new alternator to an old car as it fits really well hope you can help
@@estorilblu the tacoma alternator uses LIN bus protocol to communicate with the ECU. I've decoded some of the commands and used arduino to send them to the alternator, but the complete command set is not yet understood. I don't think using this alternator on an old car would work well
Very very well explained video. Thanks
What about cylinder 1 🤔 how the fuck you get to that
split the case halves. can't do it with em together. can barely even get to 2
So the whole engine has to be out??
Thanks, have an older model, blew the belt today with +12"/30cm of snow. Had a spare belt, but had never changed one before...up and running in under 30min. I noticed that I will have to replace some of the other wear parts after having a look into guts of my Ariens Snow Blower 922003.
I slightly crashed my Mavic Air 2S. The gimbal still functions on startup and calibrates but its hom position is looking up and to the left. It will not calibrate through the software and seems to be stuck.
Como lo solucionaste
What is the micro controller sending to it? PWM signal? Good video.
what you connect to alternator?
Eso está hecho bosta
Thanks for the clip. It’s really helped a lot. Like you, I took out the air box to get to the power steering tension bolt, but, you can actually get to the the power steering pump tension bolt from the passenger wheel-well with a long extension and a 14 mill, 6 point. The ac lines may be in the way. They can be worked around to get to the tension bolt.
Do you use lock-tight sir (red or blue)
