Why Companies FORCE People Back In The Office
The rise of remote work has transformed the traditional workplace, offering millions of employees greater flexibility and a more balanced approach to their professional and personal lives. Yet, many companies are mandating a return to the office, sparking widespread debate about the motivations behind these policies. While work from home jobs have demonstrated that productivity and collaboration can thrive without physical presence, the push to reinstate office-centric work reveals deeper economic and cultural dynamics.
The office has historically been more than a workspace-it’s a symbol of corporate authority, control, and identity. For decades, physical presence in the office was seen as synonymous with dedication, productivity, and professional value. This perception has been difficult to shake, even as remote work has proven its effectiveness. Many leaders view the office as a way to maintain oversight and reinforce traditional hierarchies, a structure that remote work inherently challenges.
Economic factors also play a significant role. The commercial real estate sector, valued at trillions of dollars, is heavily reliant on bustling office spaces. Empty buildings translate to plummeting property values, strained relationships with landlords, and weakened local economies. Businesses tied to office culture-such as restaurants, transportation, and retail-are also struggling to recover as workers continue to embrace hybrid or remote setups. Companies, therefore, face mounting pressure to bring employees back, not only to support their own operations but also to sustain the broader economic ecosystem dependent on office spaces.
For many organizations, the return to the office isn’t just about collaboration or culture-it’s a response to the financial implications of underutilized spaces and missed opportunities tied to tax incentives and subsidies. Commercial real estate is deeply intertwined with business strategy, and many companies are trying to safeguard their investments by reestablishing office-based work as the norm.
Despite these motivations, the demand for flexibility from the modern workforce remains strong. Work from home jobs have highlighted the inefficiencies of traditional office setups, from wasted commute times to distractions within the workplace. Many employees are reluctant to return to a system that often prioritizes appearances over actual productivity.
The debate over remote work and return-to-office mandates underscores a broader struggle to reconcile traditional business practices with the evolving needs of the workforce. As the push to bring workers back continues, questions about the true purpose of the office, the role of commercial real estate, and the balance between innovation and tradition remain at the forefront of this ongoing conversation.

Lmao 6:12 😂
lol you misspelled Harvard on your thumbnail. Talk about irony.
Just leave these companies
I work for an Amazon company and we have a RTO policy stating Jan 1st to be back 3xs a week with a full 5xs a week beginning April 2025. There’s been so many surveys we’ve done to showcase that we (employees) are happier with a hybrid wfh model and we’re also more productive, it doesn’t matter. They’re still pushing this. Like you said, it is most definitely a “quiet layoff”. I am blessed enough to live within 8 mins from the HQ I work out of but my heart breaks for those that have to commute so far. It’s really unfortunate. 😔 Side note - your voice is perfect for these types of videos. I feel it has a great tone that really lures an audience. Excellent stuff! 👏
I worked at a mail processing plant. The more management ‘encouraged’ us to work faster to make their productivity look better the slower the employees went and many times the next shift had to be called in on overtime even though mail volume was not excessive. The overtime people would bust ass to make their being called in and getting the work out in time as ‘reliable’. The work would get done and the no working employees would get an extra long break. Most employees had newer expensive cars financed only with the overtime. On days when management was short staffed or just lazy and let the employees work at their operations with no supervision the employees organized themselves for the most efficient output and the same amount of work would be done well before needed and the employees got job satisfaction and an extra break. Employees have all the power, that is why no more Unions. The American worker is treated the way they are willing to take it.
5:48 inflation between 1971 and 2021 increased by 569,1% . 569,10% -> 5,69x increase divided by 2580,00 -> 25, 80x increase gives us 4,53x increase or 453% increase. It's still a lot more expensive but, not 2580%. That number is sensationalism.
11:13 so it increased by 503%
12:29 recruiter's expectations are getting higher we can say via process of elemination, no? (EDIT) yea that's your next slide.
Colledge really feels like a poor people filter tbh. I love psychology but, I was too broke (still am) to pay my classes without taking in dept I won't be able to pay back either I get the diploma or not and either I then, get the job or not. Also every other nescesary expenses contribute a lot to the problem. We can barelly pay for our living and can get laid off without warning so Yea I agree, education is a fiscally irresponsible descision unless your already rich and your parents help you pay for it. I live in Canada do idk how mutch it differs but, I'd think not a lot.
I love how no one talks about how Chinese companies set up job posts in Chinese and only hire Chinese candidates, violating and circumventing EEO.
For example, Ernst and young used to have a lot of seasonal contract jobs for auditors and tax specialists. Now they post openings for those positions in India because the Indians are cheap labor for inst. And young. An embarrassing US based company.
Damon I’m sorry but I’ve been in a corporate capacity for 10+ years and I want to make a response video just on the first five minutes of your video. You’ve made many assertions that may feel nice to hear for a receptive audience but are simply untrue. You give far too much weight to LinkedIn and culture itself as driving factors of saturation on the platform and in the market. There are plenty of perfectly understandable reasons for the 0.8% number and I’m surprised it’s that high, and even as somebody who’s also run into issues with the job market in the past and needing to scrap for great opportunities, I do not sympathize with your perspective. Jobs were easier to get back then because there was a lot of busy work or “make work” you could have interns and entry levels do, there were tons of painfully manual processes large companies had to do that success even in those led to company advancement. This isnt starting from a cultural shift, this is just advancement in technology and the shift to a better solution with computers and ERPs..
You mean they don't want us workers? They want followers and they are hiring outside the country.Or hiring people with H1 be visas.Cheaply that is what i've seen in major public accounting firms
LinkedIn is the problem
It sounds. Like the manager you had at the bank was jealous that you were selected to have lunch with the c. EO instead of that person and that's the problem office politics. When you work from home, you keep one foot away from office politics, which can give you some sleepness. Knights and misery, it's freeto be yourself and work in a way. That's comfortable and use your own d*** bathroom instead of sharing bathroom with other people who invade your privacy. I hate having to go to the bathroom in the stall right next to someone who works for me.Or someone whom I work for or even a coworker
😂 most hiring managers are completely full of it 😂 reminds me of the time I got invited to a group interview strictly so they could say they were diverse 😂 and I'm white 😂.
As a college graduate 45 years ago, an engineering degree didn't guarantee anything back then either and more than half of the engineering graduates didn't benefit from their degree. That's my observation, I don't have the stats.
College is litterally just a way to indoctrinate an poison the minds of the future of the country, put them in near permanent untennable debt slavery, and keep huge swaths of the promising youth of the country out of the work force. Worse, they not only don't teach, they don't want to teach, and the teachers with skill and care about imparting actual knowledge are treated like 5th class citizens in favor of pseudointellectual poisonous poppycock of tenured "professors".
There are ghost job listings and outright hiring scams on LinkedIn. I have never had the latter problem with Indeed, though Indeed has traded in identity theft scams for Multi-level Marketing (MLM) companies pretending they’re genuinely hiring “employees”.
I “love” how there’s this recurring theme in my life as a younger millennial/older zoomer that the onslaught of issues faced in our country today are the results of plethora misguided decisions made before my birth
This channel is criminally underrated and undersubbed incredibly high production value and great depth of research.
Thank you very much for your kind words! So glad it’s able to provide value!
Land of opportunity for the billionaires😭
There will inevitably be a correction in the market if people stop applying en masse. Same with the greedflation. When nobody is buying a 70k truck, theyll eventually stop building them.
Why aren't applicants just simply LYING and saying "ya i have that experience"? I would if i were in month 6 of searching.
They are forcing turnover so they don't have to justify firing hundreds of staff members. If everyone just quits they will negotiate.
Trade School is where its at these days, 1000%. High schools need to start pushing it heavily.
It's about who you know. I only worked for 3 weeks at a project management job, which i really wasn't qualified for. I met a guy on a job site for literally 2 minutes for some paperwork i needed to give him. Through the months, he would randomly email me and ask if i had a new job. About a year later, he recommended me to one of his buddies who needed a lot of help to grow his business. I told the prospective employer that i probably wasn't qualified for his position. He insisted that i meet with him for an interview. I met with him and got a job with a good salary without even looking for one, all because I met a guy for 2 minutes, that apparently really thought i was something special. It's not only about who you know, but being BLESSED!! Also, why don't all the unemployed IT guys get together and develop a legit job finder platform? Why do we keep relying on the deceitful companies to do nothing for us?? There's plenty of highly qualified people that could start something good.
The middle management would literally be extraneous, and the corporations have multi million dollar 30 year leases that they must absolutely squeeze every penny out of
I told my mom that my plan B is to be an electrician. She then told me that my dad worked hard for nothing if I went that route
College? More like the government ruined the labor force when they got rid of internships and subsidized college loans
Ah yes, corporations whose only goal is to make money spend on office rent, electricity, water and cleaning just to screw their employees. Very logical...
More trade jobs, less immigration, stop outsourcing jobs and have industrial and manufacturing jobs in the states. Problem solved
The thing is, I'm having to make the big choice of whether I go to college next year or not, and right now I really do not feel hopeful if I do. I don't know what I want to do, frankly, just pay me well and I'll be happy. on one hand, wow, 52% of college graduates don't use their degree, and I'd be stuck in debt for decades, the statistics are not looking good, and I know I'll be unemployed for a long time after I graduate! So obviously don't go right? No... if i dont go i wont be able to get into any jobs. It feels like everything needs a bachelor's degree now if i want to make good money. I wont be able to get anywhere. So it also feels like my only real option is to go to college, even if its in the worst state its ever been. What should I do?
To Mr. Damon Cassidy....The rant at the end of this VOD is more on point than you realize when realating this issue in real life. If most workers by now have realizes how valuable they are plus many commerical spaces are no longer being used as intended with bank debts building up then the United States is more "backwards" about work now than ever before. Considering since the Gilded Age, the American citizen/workers never saw the illusion for what it was because everyone wanted a better life than being a farmer out in the middle of somewhere but don't really care US. After WW II, this same illusion went forth into its Golden Age of Decadence and Decay before the Age of World Wide Web and AI was known to the American Citizen/Worker yet they still took the same mentality and followed the same illusion from a Model T assembly line worker to Corporate Desktop typist with a six-year lunch break for World War II...but that was LAST century. We enter THIS century with the same gilded illusion...running a twenty year "war" with a couple destroyed office towers being the new Pearl Harbor military base in a US Territory to abandonment of Kabul, Afghanistan as the "new" Saigon, Vietnam left behind. But this time is different because the American Citizen/Worker is told that "the American life will continue on normally"....and they bought the story with the worldwide "special promotion" inclusion of SARS-CoV-2 straight from Wuhan, China. It's at this moment The American Citizen/Worker realizes...by now...that they are honestly worth nothing to the companies they work for even the US Government. So they choose between two mindsets, change and adapt or hurry up and die "for the good of the company (and America)". Those that took the first option not only survive but realized that they didn't need the big office building anymore, they didn't need to travel long distances and the their families that came from their only loins were real finally realized for the very first time in their lives and not just walking talking trophies....this was great in a normal world. But those who couldn't or wouldn't choose between those two options made a third option of their own. They choose to survive but they were no longer considered part of society. The homeless, the disabled (physically and/or mentally), the burger filpper, the dollar store cashier...people who had nothing, disdain by others by conscious AND unconscious choice alike. These are American Citizens/ Workers as well but they are armed well-intended to handled themselves what civility chooses not to do and will not by threat of force to do. Because those above them from their perception are hypocrites worthy enough to be a means survive off for another day although not necessary alive. Is this wrong? No, not to them because why choose to conform to the ball and chain when they were forced into them in the first place unwillingly and unaware to begin with. Which finally comes to those living high in their own towers...those wanting to bring back workplace culture are really wanting a king's court with the serfs and fools to entertain them. Let's be honest here...the people that came up with the idea here to force people to come back to the office just realized that their OWN jobs were in danger because they like everybody below them are honestly "not needed" and if any company's CEO, Board of Directors and Stockholders realized that having workers at home was a good thing then there be more people in higher-level positions that are "not needed" anymore period. Of Course, those sitting at the top are probably more afraid of their image because of commerical, personal and "other" debts. In my opinion, the remote workers should have started looking for work somewhere else while working at home. Workplace culture nowadays is mainly a bad marriage. We are only trying to be nice to each other because we don't want to be proverbially stab in the back aka lose our jobs. We like to pretend this is a " false" perception because workplace culture is important BUT IT'S NOT when you hate working with people you don't like, you like to hurry home but you don't like what is there waiting for you here ....honestly it's not worth it period. If every CEO of every company would physically tell every remote worker to start coming back to office or be fired...that would showing some balls but that would mean that they would have to face everyone's response in turn. It's amazing how much the top of the tower is cowards. But I jest...I'm no trained expert in anything but just a jack of a everyman. You don't have to believe anything I say here and take it as a joke....except I know this about me at heart....I am NOT THAT FUNNY. Thoughts anyone?
I think you arrived at the wrong conclusion. While you have data sources to back your point, I think you cherry picked which points you wanted rather than the whole picture. The study for underemployment you listed still states most (55 %) of all 4 year college grads get employed in high paying jobs. The big takeaway was picking a worthwhile degree (no arts or criminal justice) and prep for job market while in college via internship or other options. Note, the scale tips more towards college when you look at a Master’s degree with 77% earning an appropriate wage. A lot can be read in-between the lines, and yes there are huge improvements to be made in college duration, but majority are better off with a college degree when just looking at the data.
Fascinating analysis. I’m so glad to just work in a critical Civil Infrastructure Field. Our customers need us like a fish needs water. Rock solid job security. Just get along with others, comply with the Laws, and make an effort. I don’t want to sound like a braggart but the truth is my life is very, very comfortable.
So everyone goes towards skilled trades, don't you think the skilled trades schools would do the same thing as colleges do now - charge an arm and a leg for a worthless piece of paper?! Afterall, when you flood the market with an oversupply of people than the actual demand, what do you think will be the consequences??!!
My support when asked is to leave the video.
Get a education and training in a bunch of random things and the debt that comes with it, so that no matter what job you get, you will be underpaid because the random things you know are of no use to others.
Joined the army right out of high school, did a contract, came home and worked track and bridge repair for the rail road a couple years, did construction for a while, now i drive a truck. Theres so many avenues to take in life, and none of what i did other than the army is what i expected. Dont be afraid t try something new! If youre in a financial situation that allows experimenting with a new career field, and you want to try it, do it. Life isnt a linear path, and nobody else can live it for you so do what fills your cup and makes you satisfied.
All you work from home people be careful for, what you wish for. If your job can be done from home, it can also be done from home by someone in India for less money
I would also throw in that a lot of these managers have unhappy families and no friends, probably due to their job, and thus want their “work family” visible so they don’t need to be lonely.
I have a job at a big company on a local level and havr been there for 3 years. My gf got laid off tho and went through recruitment hell Now I go to interviews just to ridicule their requirements and leave.
In my home city the downtown area has suffered because of the lose of income that came to the local businesses due to the workers. I fully support workers heading back because it has the ripple effect of helping other workers who jobs are disappearing due to businesses closing because they lost their costumers due to remote working.
Part of the problem is we have a for-profit education system that is designed to create workers not thinkers. And because, in order to maximize profit they're always cutting corners, the quality of the education gets lower and lower which makes it harder for people to grasp what's wrong with the situation. Then you have certain political parties that are trying to strip the education quality even further so they can create more nonthinking voters who will support their fucked up cause.
Amazons “Focus” sounds like another word for a PIP
Lmao It's the useless degrees that ruined the employee pool.
Return to office policies prove that CEOs don't have to be data-driven. It's just a buzzword.
techno-feudalism
I remember being able to pay for college as I went, zero finance as mom & dad housed me and I worked the day shift, my niece paid off well over $100,000 in student loans, nobody paid her debit for her either JOE
Our nation can't have everyone working in the skill trades! Otherwise, China would be sending spacecraft to the far side of the moon and all we can do is fix toilet valves! One just has to look at the pace of development in China as they come up the learning curve on building cars! No country can do that without the engineering background necessary!
It was never about profit.
Remote work is killing deficit ran cities. These cities need billions to maintain their infrastructure and fund their pet projects. No foot traffic = no coffee sales no lunch sales no gym sales no transit sales no parking sales no dry cleaning sales no over priced grocery sales no taxi sales no bar drink sales no scooter rentals no street sweeper tickets ( what did I forget )
