Why Looking "Poor" Is Important | Consumerism

- In an era dominated by excessive displays of wealth, materialism, and high consumerism, the notion of intentionally appearing poor may seem counterintuitive. However, delving deeper, one uncovers a multitude of reasons why embracing a frugal outward appearance holds significant value in today's society.
Frugal living, characterized by prudent spending and resourcefulness, has emerged as a compelling antidote to the relentless pursuit of conspicuous consumption, and hyper consumerism. With the relentless rise of the cost of living, individuals are increasingly recognizing the need to adopt frugality as a sustainable lifestyle choice. By prioritizing needs over wants and shunning excessive consumerism, individuals can navigate the financial challenges posed by inflated prices and stagnant wages.
Central to the ethos of frugal living is the art of "looking poor." Contrary to conventional wisdom, the outward appearance of modesty and simplicity can serve as a powerful shield against the pressures of societal expectations. In a world where image often reigns supreme, embracing a humble appearance can convey authenticity and integrity, transcending the superficial allure of material wealth.
The difference between the rich and the poor underscores the significance of this phenomenon. While the affluent may flaunt their wealth through luxury possessions and ostentatious displays, the discerning few recognize the inherent value of understatement. By escaping the trappings of affluence, especially on social media, individuals can cultivate a sense of humility and empathy, forging genuine connections based on shared values rather than material possessions.
Moreover, the high cost of living in modern society has compelled even the wealthiest individuals to embrace the virtues of frugality. As expenses soar and financial stability becomes increasingly elusive, the allure of extravagant lifestyles fades in favor of pragmatic decision-making. By adopting a frugal outward appearance, individuals can signal their commitment to responsible stewardship of resources, inspiring others to follow suit in the pursuit of sustainable living.
Interestingly, the desire of rich individuals to appear poor speaks volumes about the shifting cultural paradigm surrounding wealth and status. In an age where authenticity reigns supreme, the ostentatious displays of wealth often associated with the elite can seem out of touch and tone-deaf. By deliberately toning down their outward appearance, affluent individuals can align themselves with the values of humility, simplicity, and community, fostering a sense of solidarity with those less fortunate.
Ultimately, the importance of looking poor extends far beyond mere appearances; it represents a paradigm shift towards a more sustainable and equitable future. By embracing frugality as a guiding principle and eschewing the trappings of excessive consumerism, individuals can reclaim agency over their lives and contribute to the greater good of society. In a world besieged by material excess and rampant inequality, the simple act of looking poor emerges as a revolutionary act of defiance, challenging the status quo and paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.
In conclusion, the importance of looking poor cannot be overstated in today's world. From fostering a sense of authenticity and humility to promoting responsible stewardship of resources, embracing a frugal outward appearance holds profound implications for individuals and society at large. By transcending the allure of material wealth and embracing the virtues of simplicity and modesty, individuals can chart a course towards a more sustainable and equitable future for generations to come.

A person's environment and the objects they choose to include in it are a representation of their psychological state. If the items are to impress or 'prove' you are someone you are not, then they are an insecure person who lacks self-esteem and a strong identity. If, instead, they create an environment around themself that reflects and enhances their actual self, not a projection of themself they want others to believe, then they are much healthier mentally. Damon is right, it is character that matters most, not some shell of objects that represent some image one wants to project to impress or influence others. And chasing less showy items to impress others will lead to less debt and easier accumulation of assets, resulting in better financial independence and peace of mind. I personally do not own a car and have chosen to live in a place where a car is not needed. Keep up the good videos.
Wonderfully said!! Really enjoyed reading this comment! I absolutely agree with everything you said! Thank you very much for sharing this
My wife doesn't understand why I buy art since "we never have any guests in this house" Geez it's for ME 😂
@@LaurentiusTriarius This story tells us about female nature: Status.
If you look about marriage and possessions, the decision driver/criteria are bragging rights communicating to their friends and family.
@@LaurentiusTriarius Yes art has been a priority for me, for the same reasons. I rarely entertain at home. It gives me pleasure to have these things: I'm a very visual person and I really enjoy combining found objects and putting to together imaginatively. This is not 'for show' it's for me.. And I do like having nice clothes. But here's the thing: I buy them usually on sale, thrifted or preloved and keep them for decades. Everything is thought through. Sometimes I make mistakes. I had to let go of a shirt that I'm not wearing, it was a mistake. It has roses all over it but it's simply not me. I felt a bit of a failure that I hadn't made it work but then I realised: nobody but you knows about this. Just let it go. Lots of people wouldn't think twice about it they just discard. I really think about what I buy and what I discard. It seems respectful to do that. Often I will alter clothes to give them a new lease of life. New buttons, a dart here or there, a seam taken in, it's all part of the project that is interacting with your outer self and finding your place.
I buy things that are out of fashion and hold onto them. Like I have quite a bit of navy blue in my wardrobe and haven't been wearing it. I wondered why...then I realised, it's too office-looking. So bought a mohair wide striped navy. blue and green sweater it looks really warm. It is a casual statement but it simply doesn't matter to me that it's out of fashion. I'm tall and slim so I can wear wide horizontal stripes. Or checks. I end up with stuff that I wouldn't otherwise buy, because it's on sale and it's a challenge for me to make it work. To me this is being creative. I drive a car with a faded paint job and recently got offered more than $1k than I paid for it 20 years ago. It's a very good car mechanically I have very good tyres on it.. To my neighbours it's an embarrassment. LOL!
Yeah but people who even feel the need to say that about another’s possessions are usually jealous themselves.
Poverty is comparing yourself to other people constantly. Wealth is being happy with what you have
Absolutely! Beautifully said!
Amen.
100%. Not who has the most, but rather who needs the least.
Certain poverty such as not having enough to feed your children cannot be relieved by not comparing yourself to others or saying you’re happy with what you have. This method might work for middle class people who complain about not having enough to go on vacations but it can’t soothe hunger pangs.
Insecurity is comparing yourself to other people constantly , and that leads to many bad habits

Bro 2020 was the year that taught me to stop trying to please others. Covid taught me a lot about life 💯
Incredible! It was a massive year of growth for me as well! Thank you for sharing!
Wisdom is a useful tool
I never followed the brands and expensive consumerism. Hopefully taught my son it’s not important either. I don’t care that I haven’t got the latest items, I just aim to have my needs met as much as I can afford.
Covid woke up a lot of people.
what did it for me was moving away from the city for a while
In Buddhism they teach that same lesson this young gentleman learned about the first nice car, "Don't let the things you own own you". Also, no one ever on their death bed said, "I should have bought more crap".
I will be saying I wish I'd got that bargain...lol!
No you're right obviously, but it's possible to go to extremes either way. Being moderate is the way, surely?

Take pride in your appearance no matter how much money you have. It’s a dignity thing.
Sounds more like vanity
@@mintyfresh5000 Really ? consider when hiring someone you want to represent your company , or if you don't care about your appearance , you just maybe a slob with no self respect
This is true. People will not respect you if you don’t respect yourself.
No, you're wrong. Dignity has nothing to do with any aesthetic or materialism. If you're worried about the way you dress or the interaction it creates with other people then it shows you're not an individual and self assured.
@@X0AleeX0Respecting yourself has nothing to do with the clothes you wear. You need to reflect on why you're beholden to others views
I've heard a good explanation about this. Just because you can purchase a luxury item, doesn't mean you can afford it. If you're spending the entire time you're using the item (car, designer bag, luxury flat etc.) worrying and stressing about keeping it pristine lest you have to fix or replace it, it's out of your range. It's fine to want to keep your belongings in good condition but if you're losing sleep over it, you're better off with a version of it that you can actually use.
Absolutely!! That’s a wonderful explanation. I believe if we really discover the intention behind a purchase it will really allow us to not have our items own us! Thank you for sharing this!

I am from a wealthy family.
I go to University.
I bring homemade Lunch, my fellow students go out to eat every day.
I bring tap water in an old bottle, my fellow students go to McDonalds nearby to buy a Soda.
I make Coffee or Hot Chocolate at home and bring it in a Thermo Flask, my fellow Students go to Starbucks.
They say shopping is therapy, I only buy high quality Second Hand.
I sit alone and fnjoy my mesl in peace and have time to reread my notes or watch a Video about what we learned, they are busy commuting between University and the nearby Shopping Mall where they go to eat.
But I do a lot of City trips.

This is an underrated comment. I love it! It’s so true. So many people live pay check to paycheck but a lot of people also buy a lot of dumb stuff.
This is absolutely me.
This is what I do! Recently lost my old water bottle though, might treat myself to a new one actually.
I'm a financial advisor at a major bank. I sit with wealthy people everyday. It's both. I have wealthy clients who act broke but I also have wealthy clients who drive Ferraris and wear Rolexes. In some cases, the ones who show their wealth have more than the ones who don't. Depends on the person tbh.
this video is bullshit!
great insights. but i think the video is about how us "poor" people present ourselves. and how to be healthy, grounded, and happy without the excessive needs for financial spray.
that being said, when you poor poor, you're poor and struggling, that's it.
I used to be in the military and had to wear a uniform everyday, having to look smart. It was freeing in the fact I didn’t have to choose what to wear. It was the same every day. Now in retirement I wear the same sort of clothes everyday mainly trousers and T-shirt with cardigan. No one gives a damn as long as you are there for friends and family and looking after yourself.
I love it! I wear the same thing almost every single day and it’s so enjoyable not having to think about it whatsoever. Thank you for your service!
I don't put a lot of effort into what I wear. As long as it's clean and looks good enough it is good enough. The most effort I put in is what cool metal band T-shirt do I wanna sport today
I once heard the phrase "A man with no bills is a rich man."
Every time I see a person covered in lables, my first thought is, how much debt are they in?
So you look down on them in the same way you imagine they would look down on you and pretend you’re morally superior cause you’re broke lol
A man with large bills and debt is nothing but a slave.
Why is this so unnecessarily gendered?

I wonder if on my death bed I will say “I wish I was more kind to myself?” A personal struggle I have because I am not good at anything and therefore not good enough to fit in social situations and have friends.
I’ve been so hard on myself for such a large portion of my life. Plenty of time I felt absolutely invisible and destroyed myself every time I would make a “mistake”. I guess all I can say is in many ways I can’t comment on your experience because I have no way of ever knowing but in certain ways I absolutely understand and I want to say you’re doing so much better than you think I promise. It was in intense thought and something I am very grateful to have thought. Shows me that I love myself far more than I let myself see sometimes. Sending you love🤍
Relatable. I learned that there are benefits to flying under the radar. I gave a lot of thought to "How can I make this work for me?"
“To Thy Own Self Be True”…we are are in this crazy world together and we do need each other, but in the end, we leave this place alone. Be your own best friend and the rest will come. Yes, “How can I make this work for me?”…I taught school for 43 years. I had to think that way to survive that environment. I always thought “what do these kids before me need?” I tried to help them along their paths. The rest of the educational construct was a nuisance.
Your good enough. Don't have friends who expect you to be good at anything except being good to them.
@seesaw You are right I do have a disability, autism and it sucks but explains my struggles.
Why do you have to look "poor" to be frugal? I'm frugal but dress well and buy quality items however I'm not trying to impress others which leads to going broke. I've seen people say they want to look poor on purpose so people don't ask them for money... Just say NO.
I do it because I am less likely to get mugged lol
Facts, people fear saying no.
I believe the point is you buy walmart rather than Gucci or Hugo Boss. You buy kia instead of Mercedes or bmw. You don't buy a new phone every year. You buy the 150k 2bed one bath instead of the 12k square foot monstrosity with the sun room, 6 bathrooms and indoor pool you can't figure out what you do with all the rooms that was asking 6.8M.
@@ADobbin1 I almost never buy new clothes. The good clothes that I have, those are the ones I wear in public and are not expensive but look good. My car is 31-years-old and is the best car I've ever had. My house is a two bedroom, one bath townhouse. I used to own a 1900-square-foot, three bedroom two bath home with a two car garage. My current home has a one car garage that my 31 -year old car can barely fit into, lol!
My kids grew up, and I didn't need the bigger home or more rooms, so this house is perfect for me. Because I have a weakened immune system from genetic diseases that showed up in my mid- to late 40s, I must stay home, except for medical appointments. I wear the most comfortable and ugly clothes here at home when I'm home alone, lol!
It's not great that I'm not healthy or in the best condition for my age, but I actually love my life as it is.
Exactly. I always felt the same about my car and other things. I never worried about scratches and dents as long as the car got me from one place to another. I took care of it mechanically and tried to care for the car physically but no worrying about it. I thought no one would be interested in stealing it. And they weren’t. This philosophy extends through my life.
Most definitely! Just that it looks not as “nice” or whatever would be said dosnt mean it’s not a great car! The stealing is aspect is something I 100% agree with, it’s so nice to never think about it! Thank you for sharing this!
I was thrilled when someone actually tried to steal my car! They broke off a metal nail file trying to turn the door lock. I kept the broken bit of nail file, and told people the story, I found it quite amusing. But the truth is they didn't want my car per se, they were in the city and needed to drive it home to the suburbs. Never mind! God that car was a bomb to look at, my current one is a vast improvement. But it simply never worried me. I do l like to dress well but not all the time, that's too onerous.
My cars/trucks /van are all over 25 years old. Rusted out and dented. I never lock them as I doubt anyone could even figure out how to start and drive them, if they even wanted to. Pretty much everything I own was discarded by someone else. I make it my own and if it works I keep it going.
Incredible! All great vehicles I would imagine! The gear shift on my car dosnt work unless you manually pull the cord with your finger (a simple fix but has taken over a month for the part to come in) and I saw the guy doing the inspection on the car having an impossible time changing gears and that’s when I thought no one could steal this haha. It still passed inspection. Anyway, really enjoyed reading this! Thank you for sharing
I love this😂😂 I aspire to be this way.
I drive a 14 yeaar old car and I love NOT having to worry if someone accidentally scratches or slighly dents my car IDC
I did buy a '22 Honda Civic but the fact that it's a Civic means that it is gonna stick around for decades if I look after it. Lots of other things I use are second hand. I use iPods for music players to not have to pay music streaming prices, I got an iPod dock off of ebay that I use everyday, I grabbed a boombox that was at my grandparents' house that no on wanted, a friend gave me some neat bookshelf speakers. I also just like old stuff cuz new products suck.
I drive an old Australian Falcon ute that’s pushing 30 years old, has a bit of rust and battle scars but keeps on running, it’s a 5 speed manual with a heavy clutch so I’m not concerned about it getting stolen, not many can drive it as it is, only me and my father know the clutch well enough to get moving without stalling it 😂
We live in a very wealthy/affluent area and it PAINS me how reliant people are on image and aesthetics. Clearly - it’s okay to want nice things and to look nice, but the emphasis is mind boggling. I’m of the mindset - it’s how I treat people and how I make them feel that’s important. Not what car I drive or how “name brand” our things are. I still haven’t adjusted and it’s been seven years 😂
I live in Austin and it is wild how much this city has leaned into appearances. It’s all about the Tesla, G Wagon, or Mercedes you drive and where you got reservations. I guess everything has peaks and troughs and we are just in that peak. Treating yourself and others with kindness and respect is a real sign of wealth in my book!! Loved reading this comment thank you🤍
I live in a nice area in KC but not THE status area. I love it! Wealthy run around with middle class, and no one really knows OR CARES!
P.S. Travis Kelce lived in my general neighborhood until dating TaylorSwift. No one bothered him or even paid that much attention to him (or his house) while living here. People are chill here. He bought a huge estate down south after they started dating and I heard he had to leave it because of stalkers there. That is so sad!
I moved to a low income area in northern Canada and expected people to be over it here. Nope. They don't dress up but they're all about their big pickup trucks, snow mobiles, atv's, rifles trailers. Their houses can be absolutely crumbling around them and struggling to get through frigid winters that could kill them in their sleep, homes poorly insulated and still they'll make sure they have snowsuit for snowmobiling before they deal with the foundation issue in their house. The lack of foresight is incredible.
The best decision I made was to start wearing non-branded clothing. I used to chase after brand names, thinking they would make me look better, but now I see that as mere extravagance. Non-branded clothes never go out of style, are much cheaper, often have great quality, and they never become outdated because there is no visible brand logo for everyone to see.
Yes absolutely!! And you can make multiple outfits with the same clothes haha. Thank you for sharing this!
Last week I needed to buy 2 new refrigerators, because my parents refrigerator & my brother's refrigerator went out of business. It was define worth 2000€.
It's absolutely great if you can buy it without worrying.
Absolutely! Great example! Thank you for sharing
STAY ready so you don’t have to GET ready. One’s financial freedom and stability is much more important than having materialistic things (that are “WANTS”)
Absolutely!! Perfectly said! Thank you for mentioning this
Once I backed right into this guys van in a parking lot. I was really young and just not paying proper attention. He was so nice about it and said he didn’t need my insurance because he can just fix the dents himself, then he went to open the door and the entire sliding back door fell off 😭 I felt awful but he was still nice about it though and said don’t worry about it. It was so kind of him and such a relief.
Sometimes a luxury item if you can afford is not that bad, I gave my mom a LV bag as a birthday gift, she really loves it. But nowadays I feel like the luxury is first class plane tickets.
Most definitely! Nothing wrong with luxury items if you’re getting them with intention! I absolutely agree with the ticket comment, quite absurd!
Being careless about your car like not knowing if the doors are locked or not caring where you park and not caring whether it gets dents just because the car is old is being careless, if you ask me. It can also cost you financially in the long run. I drive a 2007 Ford Escape with 194,500 miles on it. I've driven in for almost 14 years and the car I had before that one, I drove it for about 15 years. I care for it very much because it always saves me a lot of money in the long run. I wash it, wax it and treat it like brand new. And yes, I always park it far away from other cars and humans. No one cares for things better than the owner. You would think my car is almost new, if it weren't for the model. It's not that one makes his car his personality or that he cares about what people say. The caring and maintenance of one's things whether old or new is a reflection of one's discipline.
Here in Orange County CA, you can’t tell how rich someone is by the clothes they wear. It’s such a beachy community that even the richest people are wearing shorts, flip flops, and hoodies. 🤷🏻♀️
Incredible! Love that! A beach community is definitely where I would love to be!
I've been wanting to buy a new BMW. Imagine parking and worried about it while grocery shopping or anywhere other than my garage. That's crazy. I'm keeping my '05 Tacoma. I can't imagine going through that all while making 1k monthly payments.
Keep your car as long as you can as long as it is save to drive. I just had to give up my 07 Elantra because it wasn't safe to drive anymore. The newer cars have all this technology and I don't think my new car will last as long as my Elantra.
Isn’t it wild how the newer cars can’t run as long because of the technology intended to make them better. The 2007 range is really where it’s at!
The Tacoma is a beast of a vehicle! It is unreal how expensive payments have gotten on a car, it just dosnt make sense. That’s almost my entire rent haha
Only get the car if you have an open check book. BMW is a lot of maintenance. I love mine but it’s definitely not for everybody. 2013 BMW x3 aka when Beamer was in its prime
Just buy a 5 year old BMW with a good service history. You'll get 90% of the features and prestige for half the price
Me being too broke I always think of my material possessions as a must to protect because if I lose them I can't have another one soon enough.

Yes, I noted that people didn't criticise his appearance at work in the bank as a young up and coming man, but I can tell you that women are constantly getting comments and hints for how to dress better. It's a very unequal experience. I mean all guys have to do is keep their nails clean, hair can be a bit wild no problem and they can get away with wearing the same clothes over and over and OVER.
Just wanna say thank you. I have learnt the same thing during my 20+, gave up most flashy things. Just appreciate someone knowing what's important in life. Health and family.
Yes absolutely! True treasures in life🤍
I worked many years among very wealthy people

Yes I noticed that at the bank. The wealthy individuals were far more focused on the conversation or the efficiency of the transaction than anything else. I think to become wealthy you really see money and material items simply as tools. Thank you for sharing!
It depends on which culture. In some cultures the wealthy show off
Wealthy people aren't one big group. Some people show off while others spend the money on experiences
@@m.b5777 I'm a banker and live in Sydney, one of the wealthiest cities in the world. The moderately wealthy 'new money' people tend to be flashy and obvious. The super wealthy people are far more restrained and camouflaged. They just buy them because they're nice and can afford to.
I stopped the name brand showing off yrs ago. I can rock my clearance rack outfits just as nicely and have extra money in the bank. The only one I have to please is myself, ppl pleasing got me nowhere.

Since I've been on harder times before, I always question myself when I want to buy something expensive. There's a lot things most people have that I don't really need. And I look for used stuff. So I have a healthy economy now. I expect worse times and I am prepared.
The only people I need to please are the people who care about me no matter what. I got caught up in tech layoffs and my inner circle of friends still care about me the same as if I had a job. Totally agree with this point - I've never bought a case for my iPhone because my thinking always was "I like the design" and it never made sense to hide the thing that I liked about the object just to preserve it for longer and never enjoyed it. Я и так совершенна. Улучшать себя - это портить.
My clothing “philosophy” is utilitarian:
- I might wear something just because I like it
- I might wear something for a practical reason - Islamic dress in an Islamic area, a larger shirt to cover my sidearm, shorts with hidden pockets stowing restraint-escape tools if traveling in cartel areas of Sinaloa Mexico
- I might wear an immaculately tailored business suit if conducting business with Japanese corporate executives in Paris
- I might wear whatever the wife prefers if it will help me get a piece of her tail
My clothing choices reflect my virtue of selfishness.
That ‘health is wealth’ part really hit close to home.
About seven months ago I was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome (Basically paralysis) and I was bedridden for about a month. During that period all I kept thinking was how I was a burden to everyone, I could only eat with assistance, my mom had to take two weeks off work to care for me, stuff like that. But it made me appreciate how able I was before all that, and the convenience of health I’ve taken for granted all this while.(I’m already fully recovered now, but fine motor control for writing is totally gone).
And also for the spending on a car, I completely agree. In my country, cars take up way more of our income than is typical in the developed world. As such, I still drive my mom’s hand me down 17 year old Honda, it’s still perfectly fine and only needs yearly maintenance. My mom didn’t change her car though, she drives my dad’s car as he only needs public transport and a scooter to get to work.
We aren’t rich people by any means, but we made ourselves wealthy through good habits. Greetings from Malaysia! 🇲🇾
I used to own a big house, luxury car, designer clothes, all the trappings of the well-to-do. Then I sold everything to travel the world and lived out of a suitcase for years. I realized how little I need. At 63, I live in a loft space above a storefront in a bad neighborhood but it's clean, quiet and they haven't raised the rent in the 6 years I've been here. I dress in casual thrifted clothes, wear no jewelry or makeup and take the bus. No one bothers me, and I look like I have nothing of value to steal. The simple life is good now.
Cars are a culture and hobby to a lot. Not just from a to b. As a classic car owner who finally bought/built my dream car, I dont want a single dent...
The car is for me and no one else. It makes me happy to take my dog and simply drive it. Apart from that, I wear plain clothes, no watches etc.
I have a hard time justifying buying a newer car and replace my reliable 09 corolla with 70k mileage.
Absolutely! That will last you forever! Thank you for sharing!
I wished more wealthy youth watch this videos as they look down their noses at people that dress humble but are wonderful people
Yes it’s unfortunate. My audience between 18-25 is 2%. Which I’m 24 so I’m not exactly sure how to convey it in a way which also provides value to them
wrong most wealthy people are awesome those that act like that are not rich are those that try to look rich
I know what you referring to ..but it is not the case in England where I live ..very classiest areas .they don't even smile or look at you in the eyes if you dress diferent or are from other cultural backgrounds.
It is unfortunate too many Geezers (like me) find Damon so interesting. I wish he had a ton of younger people soaking his wisdom in. So many young ones are in to superficial and unsustainable/fulfilling relationships, status consumerism and such. I see a generation of unhappy people developing. I am not arrogant enough to think that my generation would not have gone down the same nasty rabbit holes if we had access to social media, apps, etc. But more of them need to wake up…fast. Time is of the essence.
"The things you own, end up owning you" - Tyler Durden, 1998
Excellent movie and excellent quote!
Don't take this the wrong way, but you just aren't a car person. In fact the people that you seem to think that buy "fancy" cars aren't car people either. I have a luxury car, but I don't care what you think. I bought it because it has the most releable transmission and engine of it's brand, I like the way it looks (some don't) I like the inside (better than anything in my house) and it's modified to handle better and go faster (people can't see that at all). It's shiny and clean in and out always. I bought it used because once you modify it, you have no warranty anyway and you are saving tons of money. I have many other luxury items that are more prosumer grade that will last forever and I have luxury items, such as watches, as a collector. I have all the tools to disassemble and clean the watches and I understand enough to take them apart into their little components and screws. I have expensive hobbies that nobody else cares about.
Nobody I know does what I do, so the assumption that I am doing it to appease others is false. I have a high net worth and don't keep much more than a 10-12k float in the bank because it's all invested.
I'll drive what I want, park in the lots where crappy shoppers don't shop or where fat and lazy people won't walk. I refuse to shop at places with small parking spaces.
I'm having a great time due to my hard work. Moat peeple that try to dress "rich" wear tacky branded, low level, mass made junk for common people.
A lot of people drive beat up cars and blow their money on coffee and donuts for breakfast, fast food for lunch and take out for a family dinner. It would be cheaper to make payments on a luxury car than to participate in that lifestyle. I also can remodel and repair houses so I just simply spend less that others who get low pay,, buy new unrepairable cars, blow their money on food, put trips on credit cards and have to pay for house and car repairs
The last part of the video was wow! I had a massive health scare last year and at one point I didn't know if I was going to make it and my only thoughts were for my parents who I love dearly. I remember being so worried and sad not knowing if they were going to be okay. Please everyone, take care of yourselves and give yourselves grace - we've all got one life, don't try to make the most of it, try to make it the longest!
This is such an eye opening and authentic video. I fell into the trap that I need to buy a car and have the latest gadgets to make myself look worthy. The crazy part is, that was not how I was raised to be. But somehow the world fooled me to thinking my worth lies in external stuff. Your video reminded me of how I used to think before I fell into the trap of vanity and materialism.
I am so glad this video provided value! It can be so difficult to navigate this world and I certainly strayed off my path for a long period of my life. Sending love your way🤍
@@DamonCassidy Yeah man, it did. I probably will have to watch this video again if I ever try to purchase something impulsively again. 😅
After examining my wants in depth I realized I value quality over price/brands. The good news is that we can buy stuff with good quality that doesn't cost a fortune. All the rest is vanity.
Wearing luxury items is like you still have to pay an expensive price just to be a promoter or salesmen for these brands
Side note happy to see your channel growing, well deserved 🎉
Thank you so much Daisy! It’s been unreal! So glad it’s providing value! I hope all is well🤍
Stay healthy and happy Damon.
Thank you! I hope you are doing well🤍
This is one of the best videos I've ever watched. I'm glad you're doing ok.
So glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you so much! Doing much better🤍
I can really relate to your car story. I like cars and and managed to to buy my dream car 2 years ago. Owning it turned out so stressful that I sold it in in 10 months and have been happier since . It’s a strange world.
Invest in heathy eating. Look for the best deals. Aldi and Walmart have some good options. Now, that’s a trend I will follow.
Most definitely!! That is an investment that pays off leaps and bounds!
My new favorite channel! Top level stuff here. I'm gonna share it on my Instagram from time to time.
You needed empathy to be a banker? You're fired!😂
Definitely why I ended up leaving haha. I think it allowed me to actually help my clients while I was there. Unfortunate that’s how things are
Apart from watching the quality input of your video, i also love watching and reading the comments section. Makes me screenshot most of it to remind myself of the wisdom you all shared for a 28 years old woman like me who’s eager to learn about personal finance.
So glad it is all providing value to you! I hope to continue to provide helpful tips and tools for your journey🤍
Found this video at the perfect time. Thank you for putting this out there
Absolutely! So glad you enjoyed! Thank you for reaching out!
moderation is the key..
Absolutely!
Good man! It's nice to see that America today still has based youth, not just lunatics driven by consumerism.
Glad you enjoyed this! I appreciate you reaching out! I hope all is well
I can absolutely relate and agree with your thinking and the points put forth in the video. Glad I made the choice to click on and watch this one! Keep up the good work!
this is the first and probably only video i didnt watch in 1.5 speed. what a nice way to articulate yourself, calm and collected.
i completely agree that it all boils down to character. its nice to look presentable, it also shows respect to others to be dressed in a certain way that reflects your character. but that doesnt have to break the bank. i myself try to stay within my budget, and i like the point you made that you just dress msotly the same most of the time. it truly does take the pressure off. i find myself going for the same outfits, the same dress and the same skirt, the same shoes, the same purse, over and over even though i have more clothes than that but apparently I'm only wiser when theyve been in my closet long enough that i make the same choices over and over: comfort and sentimental items, mostly sweaters i knit myself.
i had a similar epiphany yesterday. i just stood there looking at everything in my apartment, and i jsut felt gratitude. it looks nothing like the trendy stuff people post online but it's comfortable, it's a roof over my head, its clothes on my back, its food in my stomach, and its a job that provides and i thank the Lord for everything He has given me. its just everything i need to get by, to be comfortable, and to be happy and content.
i really hope more people our age come to this realization that we have enough. theres always worse situations, always. we have everything and then some. i think gratitude is one character trait that jsut shows in all you say and do. at the end of the day, if all the "status" stuff and items were taken from you, who would you be?
thansk and be well 😊
The Infiniti story is interesting. I think the important messages are 1). Don't chase "things' to promote oneself. 2). Don't allow your possessions to create unneeded stress in your life. 3). The sum of what you HAVE isn't the sum of who you ARE. 4). Good to live within your means, even better to live below.
Thank you so much for sharing this video! It helped me think about what is important to me.
Absolutely! I am so glad that it provided value to you! I hope all is well🤍
I'm a straight woman and could not care less about what car a man drives (or is he has a car even; am in Europe so many people choose not to have a car).
That’s amazing, unfortunately it’s certainly a topic of conversation here. Of course not everyone is like that but I have gotten many comments about the car I drive in a non supportive way
Grand Marquis/Crown Vics are some of the most reliable cars
Absolutely! My younger brother is driving it now. Still kicking 24 years later
@@DamonCassidy Love it. I'm still driving my '05 Marquis
Read The Millionaire Next Door! It talks about exactly this, it’s very good.
You can also thrift or shop cheaply for nice looking clothes. Not brand items or anything, but you can look nice without spending much.
That and the psychology of money are two pillars of financial education everyone should read! Thrifting is great or even just trading clothes with your friend! That’s helped me a lot!
I used to only take minutes to get dressed. When I started to care about my appearance, there are a couple of times I had taken over an hour figuring out what to wear for work. I had to laugh at myself because I felt absolutely crazy lol. I definitely agree with the minimalistic uniform approach to save time and wear & tear on your mind from the paradox of choice.
Your eyes water too when you say something you find deep and meaningful. A core memory/belief than underpins how you traverse life
and: that video is super aesthetically pleasing
Amazing! It is absolutely something I prioritize so I am so glad that you thought so!!
Locking the car multiple times it is so relatable for many many people
Absolutely! It was so funny knowing I locked the car and then doing it all over again just in case haha
Hello, missed a few videos I will now catch up on, but oh my. I've experienced, not too long ago, the freedom that comes with not giving a hoot about what 'the people' think. The ones that matter stick around regardless. I like certain things too, but as you said, I do them for me.
Absolutely, the ones that leave for those reasons don’t deserve your time! So glad you reached out!! I hope you are doing well🤍
@@DamonCassidy I am, thank you very much! :D
I cant agree that you should not look good, that does not mean expensive it means clean and well maintained, like making your bed in the morning. You can have an old pair of shoes but keeping them polished and clean is more important because it is a signal. Humans rely on signals you cannot ignore however 9 out of 10 things people think they must have is a reflection of their own deficit or insecurity rather than being worthwhile.
Most definitely! I think it is important to look presentable and enjoy how you look, but like you said it dosnt need to be expensive! Thank you for sharing!
Wow, you described Mathew 6:20-21 to me. I never understood how someone can “store up” treasures on earth until you described how your uncle’s car had different meanings to you than it did for him. Very nice video, I will share it with my circle.
Incredible! So glad it provided value!! I hope you are doing well! Thank you for reaching out
I grew up extremely poor. I now make good money. House and car is paid off. I have one pair of shoes for work, one for days off, and one nice pair for going out. My wealth is not living paycheck to paycheck, having ac, and getting whatever food i want when i go to the grocery store. I dont need anything else. I genuinely feel wealthy. I dont need nor want stuff.
Awesome, you’re doing great, alway live below your means.
hey bro! i love your videos :) one thing: something with your audio editing is messed up. it sounds like your reverb settings are all over the place, you have sidechaining on your wet signal with wrong release settings on the compressor, or the dry/wet is being modulated by a random wave. idk what it is, it drives me nuts whilst listening tho
i'm a Doctor, i work in a hospital dressed as a full goth (without the usual chains because health regulations) and nobody cares, they just say "nice outifit, keep up the good work". i drive a 25 y/o shitbox and people actually like it because it's different from the usual
I'm learning to live. Much of my life I put others first; their views, needs, presence, etc, and I was always at the back burner. I bought things to meet other people's standards. I lived for others.
I’ve done the same thing for most of my life. While I am still young it is unreal looking back how little I ever did for myself. So happy to hear you are starting to live for you! Sending you love on your journey🤍
@@DamonCassidy thanks Damon
what a wise man. I agree with all of this. I’ve also recently found that esp in certain parts of the country. its not only important to know internally that you are a good provider for a partner, but you have to convey it with the car you own or the place you live. Even though having those expensive things actually decreased your net worth or ability provide. My workaround was to purchase a second hand depreciated luxury vehicle which was a small percentage of my net worth. Harder to do the same with housing.
The more I tried to look good the more hollow my insides became
Very powerful words. Thank you for sharing this
what an underrated channel, love your videos
Thank you so much! Glad they provide value to you!! I hope all is well🤍
I was not expecting it to get so deep. That was a wonderful video thank you for sharing. As I've gotten closer to my 40s, people aren't paying as much attention as you think. If they are that's a problem for them not me.
Glad you enjoyed it!! People are so focused on what is happening in their life like you mentioned if they do notice it’s on them. Thank you for reaching out!🤍
@@DamonCassidy indeed glad you are doing well.
You are both a wise and good man. Your parents would be proud of you.
Subbed to your channel.
We have the same thinking about "protecting" our nicer things. 😂😂 The nicer things I've bought secondhand are being used regularly and I love them but the things I bought brandnew are rarely being used, and I still have a lot of things brandnew unused. What I do now, if family members ask for something and I have that thing (brandnew) I'd give it to them without a second thought😂😂 at least it will be used by someone who needs it and it feels like a weight lifted on my chest. The relief it gives me. 😊😊
I also had the “I wish I had been kinder to myself” thought when I thought I wasn’t going to make it
When I got my newer Prius I told myself I'm gonna treat it like a beater (not maintenance but cosmetics). I'm gonna not clean it (cause I don't care about appearances). Inside of the car is dirty. Park it in the dirt and mud. But I love the adaptive cruise control in it. It makes me happy. It is worth the price I paid for it. I enjoy driving the car. Umm, but I never think about how it looks
I spend a ton of money on skincare to look young but then dress like I'm poor. And looking young for as long as I can is a top priority to me not the way I dress or my car. My aim is to look young
But what is not needed, got me thinking again. This video got me thinking. I need to get serious about getting rid of everything that's not needed for the goals that I want to achieve
Man I love this channel and your videos
Haha I am the same way with my car, I push that puppy to the limits sometimes. I am so glad it has been providing value! I always enjoy reading your comments! Thank you so much for reaching out and I hope things are going well🤍
@@DamonCassidy No problem, this is my new favorite UA-cam channel. The freedom for us to do whatever we want. No wrong or right but to help us see that if the exact thing we’re doing right now is what we want in life as long as we’re certain of that that’s what I like about this channel
I really needed to hear this. Thank you.
I am an extreme minimalist. I drive an old Honda CRV and do my repairs with the help of cool mechanics instead of paying next to a fortune at the chain mechanic shops. Most of my clothes are bought at thrift stores. I invest in my health by eating healthy, working out at the gym, doing things that make me happy, keeping up with dental and health checkups, and only spending time with positive minded people who add value. Instead of buying the latest things, most of my income is invested and saved for financial emergencies. I've gone to some extremes by saving good food from being thrown away in dumpsters. And I still go to vacations. It shocks me how some people making a higher income than what I make end up being mindless consumers instead of putting their money to work to build wealth.
The same brother, the same here.
В гробу карманов нет.
My thong was to save develop the hidden part of myself (skills, inestmenfs, finance) and then when i felt good about that i focused more on the exterior. I still buy used clothes, use coupons, groupons, will walk farher to avoid paying for parking.
real eye opener, thank YOU!
So glad you enjoyed it! I hope all is well🤍
I refuse to be a walking billboard for brands and use them as status symbols.
I had an old 1996 Toyota Camry in college. A black girl rear ended me and proceeded to yell at me as if it was my fault. Her Mercedes had a little scratch on the front while my car's entire bumper was pushed in. U bet ur ass I took her insurance card info and charged them to fix my old car. If she was nice about it, I wouldnt have cared either.
I'm 69 years old. I learned at age 19 that having a nice car was not worth the headache. I had a small fender bender on my 57 Chevy. Back then you could not get replacement parts.
I sold it and started buying beaters again. It's a lot less stress. You don't pay much for them and you don't worry about them.
