The REAL Reason Finding A Job Seems Impossible

  • In today's labor market, for many it is becoming incredibly challenging to secure employment. The job market, especially in the US economy, seems to be fraught with hurdles that make the job search feel like an insurmountable task.
One significant factor is the apparent rise of "ghost jobs." These are positions that companies advertise but may not be actively trying to fill. Ghost jobs can create a misleading impression of opportunities in the labor market, leading job seekers to apply for roles that are essentially non-existent. This phenomenon contributes to frustration and confusion among applicants, making the job search process feel more daunting than ever.
Unemployment rates, while often cited as indicators of economic health, can sometimes mask underlying issues within the job market. For instance, the headline unemployment rate might not fully capture the difficulties faced by specific groups, such as recent graduates or those seeking entry-level jobs. The struggle to find entry-level jobs is particularly pronounced as many companies require experience that fresh graduates simply do not possess. This creates a catch-22 situation where gaining necessary experience seems impossible without first securing a job.
The current state of the US economy also plays a crucial role in the job market dynamics. Economic fluctuations, whether due to inflation, shifts in consumer demand, or global economic pressures, can lead to hiring freezes or layoffs. This economic instability can make employers more cautious in their hiring practices, thereby reducing the number of available positions and increasing competition for the jobs that are posted.
Furthermore, technological advancements have transformed the job application process, sometimes to the detriment of job seekers. The use of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) by many companies means that resumes must be optimized for specific keywords to even be considered. This can be a daunting task for applicants who may not be familiar with how to navigate these systems, leading to many qualified candidates being overlooked simply because their resumes do not contain the right phrases.
In addition to these factors, the shift towards remote work has also altered the job market landscape. While remote work opportunities have expanded in some sectors, they have contracted in others. This shift can make it difficult for job seekers to understand where the opportunities lie and whether they need to relocate or adapt their skills for different types of employment.
Another critical aspect is the competition within the labor market. With more people vying for the same positions, standing out becomes increasingly difficult. This is especially true in popular industries where job postings can attract hundreds or even thousands of applications. The sheer volume of competition can make the process feel overwhelming and discouraging for many job seekers.
Lastly, the psychological toll of prolonged job searching cannot be underestimated. The constant rejection or lack of response from employers can lead to feelings of despair and hopelessness. This mental strain can negatively impact one’s motivation and confidence, making the job search process feel even more impossible.
In conclusion, the perception that finding a job feels impossible right now is influenced by a complex interplay of factors within the labor market and the broader US economy. From ghost jobs and unemployment rates to the challenges of entry-level positions and technological barriers, these elements combine to create a job market that feels particularly unforgiving. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for navigating the job search landscape and maintaining resilience in the face of adversity.

It's that the incentives aren't there. We're expected to work slave wages. We don't have the option of getting a good home. We're told that if we can get enough qualifications, we'll be compensated well. Yet, I've met people with bachelor's who barely make over 20 an hour. Also, we're talking about corporates who love slave labor! Migrant children have been kidnapped and pressed into work! Well, we do print money out of nothing. Money is not based on anything real. It's based on debt. Debt is not a real thing. It's an arbitrary value system. It really is. It's just a game we made up. With a set of rules. Rules that could be changed, and which are in fact regularly changed, as needed. Really, the only value it has to society today is hierarchy. And it's debatable if that is of value. Every other function of money can be replaced by technology.

Now, I'm on my 3rd attempt at a job, and I'm waiting back for results. Likely completing a background check at this time.
So, I definitely feel you when it comes to grocery stores rejecting your application. Such a shame, man! Especially when my local grocery stores have maybe, like 1-2 checkout lanes open and lines going back into the aisles!? Like, what happened to having 4-5 lanes open? Do they need employees or not? Cause apparently, the job wasn't available to work cashier? So weird.

@@djtwister6997 So after months of interviews at the FAANG and FAANG-ish companies, I almost never even heard back. Actually, one of the team leads voluntarily went against policy. Sent me his personal email to connect with him when one of them ACTUALLY opens up (gross).
I applied to a company that almost sounded fake like 3 months ago. I applied because the role was accurate, honest, showed the pay scale, and so much more. Just super ethical. Turns out in those 3 months, they merged with a company who has a massive and lucrative client base. Spoke with the recruiter and it was a completely normal, friendly, not "HR-ey", conversation. Same thing with the the technical conversations. They said they had a 0% attrition rate on their team and I believe it. I did some hunting on LinkedIn lol.
They reached out today informing me that they want to move forward. With all of the super ethical green flags I see, as long as the pay is even general ballpark, ill take it happily. These past 4 years have put me through the ringer. I work in a really niche and borderline illegal role so I need an employer who embraces whats required to succeed in that. Most companies outside of FAANG don't endorse that. The pay is nice, but you really learn about what your worth truly is. When you lose your role after marrying it, you feel lost and useless. I don't regret it and I'm glad that it happened while I'm young (only 27). I was able to move back from NYC to my parents house to not pay rent or food costs. Super thankful for that because in reality I could just rot in this situation and still be "fine". So many people don't have the luxury to survive comfortably without working for 5 months.
Thanks for asking and I hope you're not in a similar spot. If anyone is reading this and is in a similar spot, please keep going. It only takes 1. In the wise words of Kanye, "One good job is worth a thousand interviews"... or something like that.

The amount of money upper management let me offer was laughable. As in people laughed when I told them what it was the for the type of work they would be doing. Even with the prospect of learning and having a high earning potential it wasn’t enough to get people in the door. And potential employees with experience? Forget about it. Can’t afford them.
The industry was solar. Installing and servicing. I could offer $15-$18 to start(fast food wages) and up to $27 for experienced electricians(used to earning $30-$45)

Reminds me of our situation on the railway where the starting pay is also non-existent. The management decided to shift the scheme of salary increases a few times so that new people get paid more from the start at the expense of not getting salary bumps later on but that still doesn't work. Our solution to get decent people at the moment is that people either bring in their own kids or kids of their friends that are fresh out of school. That of course on top of hiring everyone who applies and seeing if they are any good in the 3 month trial period (they are usually terrible, lacking basic work discipline).
Though on the topic of terrible candidates, there's one more thing to consider. When the unemployment rate goes down to 3% or so, the pool of people looking for work becomes garbage unless you can advertise to people who want to change their career, which we can't possibly afford.

The customers are US/EU. I suspect that the reason is that would be quite hard to find a good senior sw dev for 4k $ a month in the US :)

      100%
I think this is the biggest factor if you're not in a senior role. Companies are abusing the visa system in the US to hire people at a lower wage who will also put up with working conditions that most westerners would not tolerate.
I believe that due to current cultural standards, not enough people are willing to point out the elephant in the room because they might think that it would be perceived a certain way. The fact of the matter is, there is no labor shortage. Companies are just allowed to get away with these hiring practices, which screws over our domestic workforce, and encourages mass amounts of people to come here. Basically our job market is being sold out for the sake of profitability.
I believe we are a the point that there should be a full scale moratorium on immigration for a few years, and the immigration system needs a complete legislative overhaul. It's clear that it is having a massive impact on the quality of live and standards here in the US.

The top 10% of earners pay 70% of income taxes. Isn't that enough? Stop listening to class warfare talking points. When GM went bankrupt the labor compensation package for the UAW was $72/hour. Do you see why manufacturing is outsourced? Companies got out of the pension business because the job market has changed. Not many people stay in a job for life as in years past. Many of these companies aren't around long enough for that to happen. Make your own pension plan with IRAs and 401 Ks. Take them with you from job to job. No point crying about the past. Your generation spends a lot of time blaming previous generations instead of appreciating what you have in the US. I invite you to look around the world to see where you could have it better. An average income in the US is probably top 5 percent in the world.

    2) the Bureau of Labor Statistics has to ask about work & educational history, and about career skills. If a surveyed person is qualified for a higher-paying job title than they have now, they are counted as "underemployed."
    3) Unless they have conducted a census of the population, they must report any numbers as being within a range of values representing a 90% confidence interval.

You are likely only going to use about 5 percent of the knowledge being taught. Talk to the people who are active participants in the field of your interest. Ask them what the actual important skills are and try to cultivate that skill. Diploma only gets you something they can check the box on... It doesn't have too much real world value. This is why networking is important... It gets you the key points you need in a sentence vs. Years of bullshit.

Humans are social creatures, and if the hiring team feels like you wont mesh well with the team, even if you're an all-star student, they'll hiring someone with more charisma.

Even the "good" jobs are pretty terrible. Costco, for example. The starting pay and benefits are better than most other retailers, but they'll start you part time, and expect you to have full time availability, so don't even think about having a 2nd job. You aren't guaranteed to work the position you applied for. They'll give you the work that no one else can be bothered with on any given day. Also, make sure you don't get sick, show up late, or have an emergency for the first 90 days or else you'll be replaced.
When I applied for the Sales Associate position at Home Depot, I didn't hear back from them for months. I walk in to ask a manager, and they told me that I would need a special code to give on the phone to bump my application up the queue. Didn't even bother going through all the effort for a low wage job.
When I applied to a similar position at Lowe's, they went radio silent for 6 months, then told me they were willing to hire me with no interview.
Aldi pissed me off the most though. I wasted time at a "meet and greet" with some middle manager who asked basic questions like "Can you lift 50 pounds?" "Do you have a reliable means of transportation?" Stuff that most companies put on the online application. Two weeks later, I went in for a second interview that lasted less than 10 minutes. A week after that, I get told that I've been selected for the final interview at 12 PM, but they email me at 8 AM to tell me that all interviews were cancelled because they transferred an employee from a different location.

I know of a workplace that lied by having ghost jobs, and I saw them lie to applicants and waste immense amounts of time for jobs that would never actually hire. It enraged me and I refused to participate. I would've warned applicants on Glass door, but the business is small enough that they would've figured out it was me.

When i looked for a job recently, it seemed that most were there just to say they were hiring but not actually looking to hire. I have 10 years of diesel equipment repair experience, for a little context. For every 100 jobs i applied to i would get 3 interviews and for every 10 interviews only 1 would make an offer worth my time. Job market is a bloated dead animal right now

I really enjoyed your analysis. It is pretty amazing what you shared here. It is also quite frightening too now that AI is taking over the screening process. Fortunately for me I am a 67 year old baby boomer who is past retirement age so I hopefully will not have to compete to get a job in this new world order. I know that doing well on youtube in terms of getting subscribers and views comes down to impressing its algorithm. And not to my surprise based on my stats I am pretty bad at this except for shorts. My shorts seem to get a decent number of views. It is all a mystery to me but reinforces just how necessary being talented is in the modern world.

    • @DamonCassidy
      @DamonCassidy  25 днів тому +5

It’s a mystery to me as well, in certain ways I love the game of it and in other ways I can’t stand it. I guess it’s what makes me keep coming back to it. I solely do it for the value I hope to bring but I have not a clue what I would do if I didn’t have UA-cam occupying my attention and passion. Something I’ve been stressing more about lately. Thank you for reaching out, hope you are doing well
