What's in my bag? PLANNER EDITION
This was video done by request - what's in my bag? AND my pencil pouch, because IYKYK.
Some context: I own my own business that is all online, but I do work between my home office and my co-working space most days. So, I have my work bag that is usually on standby and ready to go at a moments notice. I'm also in a phase of my business where I might be working 6-7 days per week, so this bag really truly is my daily driver.

Week One in my 2025 Planner
Переглядів 1,4 тис.День тому
I REALLLLY loved the first week in my new inserts for 2025 - and it just feels SO affirming since I didn't have a back up plan. One thing I am GLAD I did - I put away all my planner stuff that wasn't in use in this book (as seen in the declutter video for The Unhauled Year). It really reduced the temptation to panic and make more work for myself, and I'm glad I followed through on that. 🖤

I only have ONE planner, but I do have some journals I use regularly - so here's a sneak peak at the 2025 stack! And honorable mention also to my A6 5-year techo; I do use that one regularly but for some reason I always forget about it in my 'system' videos 😅

      Hello!!! Thank you so much... the adulting log is a conglomeration of things. Cleaning mostly, like baseboard but WHICH room in the house did they get done in, when I do my dog's grooming, when we do things on the car like oil changes, car washes, and put air in the tires, rotate tires, etc. That, and 'deep clean' the different areas of the house, and when we wash the comforters, mattress pad, etc. :) I've added also when I wash my make up brushes (let's be real, I won't do that weekly but if I do it monthly it will be more often than how I've been doing it in the past lmaoooo)

      @ I’d used my phone for calendars etc and had a couple of notebooks in the past, but I was looking for something to journal a hobby in. I looked at those two notebooks and they just didn’t appeal to me, big empty pages, what would I write to fill them? So I started looking at notebooks on Amazon and the UA-cam algorithm did its thing. Suddenly I was seeing TN videos and I was so interested. I ordered a Newestor/September Leather TN from Amazon which had notebooks and accessories, and when it arrived I absolutely fell in love with it. The hobby inserts have been put away now, and now I have a daily diary insert which I’ve drawn and it has a section on each day to track a health issue, and that lasts till May this year, and a monthly planner I drew that lasts for two years. A travel journal where I’ll do a write up on my camping trips at the front and at the back a page list of things to restock my van up with for camping next spring and a couple of pages to note any campsites that I really like. I’ve also got a canvas wallet from Etsy and the accessories that came with the TN. It’s absolutely perfect now 😀

    This is a great example of why we have to understand how we think before we can settle into a planner. After floating between dated Daytimers, Blue sky, Franklin planner, (which were fine for classes and work schedules back in the day but which was never fully utilized as intended) and spiral notebooks, and digital solutions, And some attempts with bullet journaling (I'm on the same flexibility page!) I decided that at age 60 I would experiment with the disc binder situation. I considered it a birthday present to experiment with the different products, taking the time in the money to try them and listen to a lot of videos about them. They really solved my challenges of wanting variety inside and on the outside of my planners and notebooks, and allows me to purge my regular planner of excessive notetaking and to separate those notes physically into categories in other notebooks/sections. That makes it so much easier to just archive my big life events instead of everything I ever wrote about everything I ever thought. 😂 A lot of times my dated calendars would get crowded out with Notes! And I'm sorry, I just can't do the index thing. To me that would be so much friction it would drive me crazy. Each year I use the current free version of OneNote to create really nice looking two - page monthly spreads for myself. I've also created various planner pages in there as I figure out what works for me in different seasons of life. But the ones I want to keep as archive or the two page monthly spreads. I keep an ongoing perpetual calendar that's printable. I just write in the changes as they occur and reprint a nicer updated copy when I'm in the mood. Same with routines. I don't wanna keep writing things I do on a routine over and over and over again. At intervals, I use an older format of OneNote - 2010 - offline to update and print out The next actions of different projects (which happily prints out full size, half size or happy planner classic size or any custom size at all) so that I can see exactly what the next actions are - That has been pretty helpful Especially when circumstances are feeling a bit overwhelming… Which happened this year. I pick a couple targets and then I can put them on whatever my today pages. I don't know if the new, paid version of OneNote allows printing to different sizes of paper but in my free version it doesn't. I can also print out my contacts and other useful things from that old Microsoft office program. Very handy to not have to keep paying for the privilege of doing that. Sometimes my today pages on my phone, sometimes it's on a blank piece of paper or an index card. Sometimes it's on a page I designed for my planner. It depends on what I feel like carrying around with me. I actually cut up both used paper, junk mail paper and new paper to fit different size binders for free/nominal cost. I either print custom pages on these (especially using the waste paper for experimental pages, pages I don't plan to keep like Dailies, And for scribbling notes on the go) - I use a simple paper trimmer to do this in front of the TV at night every month or so. But you can also probably have your local office supply store cut paper to spec for you.... my local office supply shop is definitely willing to do that for a very small charge. This works out great for me because while I like my plan is to be attractive I don't necessarily Love the artwork that comes with the proprietary ones. Mostly I love the proprietary planners because they have good looking tabs on their dividers and I find ways to repurpose them (sometimes covering them with a more attractive art paper than what the original was. I don't necessarily enjoy "You go, girl!" and other slogans on my dividers 🤣

But if you search 'b6 zip moterm' you should be able to find it :) The A5 cover is from Sojourner, and her shop isn't producing right now but go follower on IG at @retrowtures and she'll be posting when she's up and running again! The TN with the brown/grey is from elysianpaper.com - the leathers were the walnut with the dark grey pocket, but I think she has some different leather in stock now since she just switched around a bunch of her leather supply. Hopefully that helps!

    I love how you’re using the TNs. I see so many videos of planner content where people are moving to various diary notebooks, even a well known one that has ‘weeks’ set up, which is quite expensive and is the size of a £2 diary from the local supermarket….and invariably they either stop using it, or don’t use the note pages in the back which is such a waste of paper. Or huge notebooks which seem to be used for a few weeks, then pages missed and eventually abandoned because the book is too big for their needs. And then there’s us, the die hard TN users who have everything nicely sectioned out in different inserts, and we don’t seem to have wasted pages or the ‘too big a book’ syndrome. And your Dad…I heard something that helped me understand my Dad’s passing…”grief is all the love being stored up with nowhere to go” ❤️

    Thanks for posting this thorough video. I'm thinking about pairing a Sterling Ink N1 half year common planner with a cut down standard stalogy and was wondering how I might set it up. I too am going to put in two pages a day and put in note pages and probably use it for two months. I didn't think about an index in front so thanks for mentioning that. The cost of the Stalogy for two months seems like a good economical choice too if you get the half year it's 6.50 a month. Not a bad investment for insuring a bit of sanity in our lives lol.

      I just use a corner rounder I got off Amazon :) And I just do 3-4 page in the rounder at a time so it doesn't hurt my hand/isn't difficult to round. This is the one I use, and I use the 'small' side for the stalogy corners: amzn.to/3BrZNl0

    I like using The 12 Year Year framework. I used to use the Makselife goal system, but I found that I didn’t need most of what was included in it. It’s a great system, it’s just not for me anymore. It was great hearing what your goals were.

      I get that - I like exploring different systems and then adapting what works for me. I have not tried the 12 week year yet though, it's something I definitely want to look into for future use I think! I will plan to do a goal setting UA-cam Live for a few of my goals which I'm excited about!!

    I’ve got some undated HP size Makselife inserts that I’ll be using along with some custom health trackers. I’m going to try to do the 12 week year in a way that makes sense for me. I’m also budgeting in a hybrid system with the app YNAB and a printable version of the budget mom in a Big HP. One thing I realized this year is that I love to use apps for tracking and budgeting, but I don’t look back and reflect on the data to make changes. My brain just can’t process it. Same with YNAB, I love to keep track of my balances and allocate my income but I don’t look at my grocery or other categories before I spend to make sure I’m not overspending…so what’s the point. I’m 52 and looking to make some major habit changes in 2025.

    • @elenamplans
      @elenamplans Місяць тому

      Oh i love that! But yes - I get tracking digitally but wanting to see the data in front of you physically. That's where I think having the gigital tools to track, but an analog system to collate the data and reflect can be helpful. It's similar to what I do with my clients; they use apps but then we go through a weekly review where we assess the data :)

      @@elenamplans the Vision->Goals-> Identifying the habits and behaviors needed, the quarterly reflection/review before the start of the new quarter -> where (what goal) did I move the needle / worked vs not worked / most importantly ADJUSTMENTS esp as a result of the CHECKIN with CAPACITY :) I know this but setting up tactical systems to really do this - I tend to very minimum high level check in. I need to really have a clear picture of the vision of what I am trying to accomplish - Im not great with trackers so I need to find alternative ways to move forward. Im pretty efficient in my day to day planning - but I need improvement with my Goals checkin.

    I'm also using a combination of makselife and cultivate what matters - also figuring out my own system that works for me - in my case I find it more helpful to vision and plan goals for six month periods rather than the entire year - good luck!

    • @elenamplans
      @elenamplans Місяць тому

      YES - I feel like both systems are so good, but I like being able to take pieces of them that work for me :) And I love keeping the 6-mo vision versus the year, because SO much can change in 6-mo. I think that gives you a good mix of 'long term' and 'adaptability' so you can flex your goal planning as needed.

    I love this setup coach Elena. Instead of slimming down the 1/2 year stalogy even more, have you considered using a wider cover? A5slim/wide?

    • @elenamplans
      @elenamplans Місяць тому

      That's a great question! At this time, I don't plan to purchase another custom cover - since purchasing another one isn't super aligned with my goals right now of decluttering my stationary :) Although I have a wishlist item for another cover but order it slightly wider (maybe not quite A5 slim, but somewhere in between) next year if I end up ordering another one. If I do order another cover. I'll definitely get another VDS again because for what I like and wanting to keep using what I buy, the value of it is worth it to me. I plan to order some leather samples so I can make a super informed decision on any potential future orders, but I also don't MIND having the stalogy cut down a bit more - it hasn't impacted the functionality at all since it was only 5mm. It doesn't bother me enough to order a whole new cover just yet.

    So glad to see you’re well. Was getting nervous not seeing a live or much content from you. I knew you were hard at work figuring something, plus the holiday. I’ll need to follow you on other socials. 🙂 Anyhow, I was going to suggest something similar. I could see you were struggling even though book-bound is your jam. Fun fact, I went into travelers after leaving Happy Planner. I did everything quarterly. Had several monthlies to track data but had a weekly and then a journaling/notes/to do insert. Then I had a junk journaling insert for creativity. Loved it. Sometimes I entertain going back. But I love just one large chunky book, no matter the chunk. There’s something about just throwing in my bag, just in a vinyl cover, when I’m the go, that’s satisfying. I could see why anything smaller than an A5, the chunk would get difficult to work with. Especially a standard with how narrow it is. All you can do is try it out. ❤ I love your vds. You motivated me to bring mine back out that I purchased second hand. The outside leather is undyed and had some water stains marks. So, I pick it up for a fair price. I used a conditioner/cleaner to even it out and picked one to be “too safe” (darkening the undyed). It did darkened it a little. But not much and now I don’t like it, as it looks a bit orange. I’m going to strictly condition it with mink oil, to hopefully get to go to a chestnut color. Has a beautiful Tiffany blue leather inside. I think the stark contrast will be beautiful. Wish me luck! 🍀

      Aw you're so kind! Yes, not so much struggling with my books (although I think there was some of that going on) it's moreso just bandwidth and ensuring I'm prioritizing my personal health and business during a busy season, since YT here is a hobby for sure! I'm so glad you got inspired to bring out your VDS for sure! And I agree on a chunky book - in a B6 or A5 size, it's not as much of an issue - in TN, being narrower, it's just a bit more unwieldy lol

    I have heard nothing but bad things about Naya Paperie, especially her customer service... It's like she can't stand to hear that she is human and makes mistakes... That's not how you run a business... ESPECIALLY when her items are $100+... She has just been plain out rude and as much as I think her covers are beautiful - I would never deal with an owner who doesn't handle their mistakes professionally. Glad you finally got a cover you love ❤

    Ah! So cute! I love love the closure design. I definitely prefer a snap closure for my rings but if I used a regular book as a planner in the future, I think I would prefer a closure like yours. I have 2 custom VDS and I have one on the way for Christmas from my boyfriend, and for all three, I had excellent customer service. The one my boyfriend recently ordered me had an extra pen loop. The same day it was ordered, Petra emailed us asking which pen loop I wanted as the bigger one. We responded and she responded back the same day! They are so quick and the quality is just amazing. Honestly I’m so happy with mine! Definitely do some research and ask questions because it IS a lot of money for something custom that if it isn’t just what you want… bleh. So Ike what types of closures, pen loops, extra pockets or pocket configurations, your go to “colors” for covers that you don’t get tied of, what type of texture you want, how much you want to baby it or let it patina etc. But soooo so good if you wanna give it a go. But also maybe check out some BST groups! But if you do order custom I’m sure Petra could accommodate a similar leather piece on the elastic closure, I would just email the shop to ask before ordering :)
