funny to see this on my recommendations. This is my cousin. I loved him man. a lot of people did. When he passed a few weeks later he was inducted into Austin's music hall of fame. JT is a blues legend in Austin and in many places that blues is appreciated. sometimes you would walk onto 6th street and he'd be playing live in a some of the bars they have there. Everyone knew him and he was respected as such. always fun to be around and humble too. My 2nd cousin, his nephew has a video of him playing the guitar with his teeth live at a concert. it was amazing.

I appreciate your efforts in breaking down Aes' work. You really nailed it when you mentioned that a certain level of intellect is needed to fully appreciate the lyrics. However, I would add that it also requires a great deal of work and research to fully dive into all the references this modern-day Shakespeare incorporates into each song. Aes is a genius, and I believe his work will be more appreciated in the future than it is now.

Had to sub off the strength of this breakdown! And big facts on some of the younger reviewers missing out of so many the layered references he makes in these amazingly crafted rhymes. This album is a layer cake!

The 90s was such a rough decade. Just in the US, you had Ruby Ridge, Waco, the Murrah Federal Building bombing, and Columbine, among many others. In the Second World, you had the fall of the Soviet Union, the Yugoslav Wars, the rise of some of the most intense corruption, economic depression, and gang warfare ever seen, the North Korean famine. The Third World saw the Rwandan Genocide and the African World Wars. It's not hard to imagine living through that decade and wondering if the world was about to end.

Ottoman Empire, Ghana Empire was a great Empire as well. The current Ghana which used to be called Gold Coast before and under the colonial rule was named after the Great Ghana Empire. I believe he is making that comparison. The hype the western empires and look down on great African Empires. Timbuktu for example is recorded to have the first university. Timbuktu is current day Mali in the west Africa which was also the head of the Ghana Empire. Actually that part pulled me to this song because I'm from Ghana and currently going through political struggle with the Dutch Government. I will tell you more about this when you respond and if you are interested. The team of the song fits my sound track so perfectly!. Cheers brother you are doing a great job breaking this down!

As others in the comments have said, Aes is a genius and his songs are some of the best poetry of our time. He uses metaphors to tell stories throughout each song, and if one is willing to take enough time to get a modicum of understanding of what he is referencing then they will be in for a treat. I am happy to see an intelligent breakdown of his work, this vid earned you another subscriber.

*Arachnophobia Maybe a little wordplay on Iraq... Black petroleum was the reason it was invaded, but initially, they had to instill fear into the hearts and minds of the American people to seem legit (Fear of spiders/Anansi/the Black man) Phobias are usually an IRRATIONAL fear, and fearing a spider is crazy because it serves the important purpose of ridding pests from your home, so essentially, you NEED it the same way they need Black people to be the number one consumers in Capitalist America...These are just my takeaways as I do not claim to speak on behalf of Mr. Trotter a.k.a. Black Thought

7:00 Canibus released that track in 2007 which means he released it after this song came out. I don't think Lupe is doing some layered stuff like Canibus but this song certainly is layered (atleast the first verse lol). Anyways, only a handful of people know about that Canibus track. I've subscribed because of it. ❤😊
