his album “Float” from 2000 is a must-listen in his discography.. way more dense and cryptic, might be harder for a first listen, as I’m still catching new lines this many years later. some tracks to check out are “Oxygen”, “Prosperity”, “Fascination”, “How to Be a Carpenter”, “Big Bang”, “Basic Cable”
I have to say the song is nothing more than a fine work of Aes' set to the music of Tobacco. I think the song is a description of his struggle with severe depression and trying to deal with it on a personal level. Taking abilify and its side effects and feeling alone and disconnected to the world around him. Possibly, the only way to cope is to get away from everything. He did so by a train ride across America lost in his own thoughts, with no one to remind him of what he was trying to get away from and pulling him back into the Morass of misery.
I like your interpretation of the “sultan of sublimation” line ; I learned something new in the psychology context ; in physics, sublimation is changing from a solid state to a gas (evaporation; but for solids) ; I’m reminded of the Aesop line: “folks are on some ‘Oh. Hello!’, I’m on that ‘Hocus. Pocus’ *poof*”… Or Homer Simpson turning into the cloud-form of himself when someone mentions “free Craft Services” 21:14
Another excellent breakdown. I actually like his flow and the lyrics/subject matter here, but I feel like AES sounds better with a crunchier, thicker set of beats. I don’t mind minimalist segments, but when the beat sounds weak or buried for the whole track he sounds more pedantic. Less fun. AES is good with a pulse. Like None Shall Pass and most of Impossible Kid.

The Empire Builder is also the train that runs from New York to Seattle, which mirrors his personal journey.
