Great job dram fam for getting this to 1k views in just over a week. Esoteric whiskey that a lot of enthusiasts will turn their nose up to. Shane is my favorite whisky tuber by a mile. Love the natural & honest presentation. Legitimately rooting for this channel.
Thanks
Thanks very much Andy 🙏
Great review! Here in the States, this bottle is priced at the equivalent of £13 to £14, which definitely makes it a better value.
I had a feeling this would be super cheap over there. We don't get many quality bottles at that price. Certainly not at 50 ABV. Lucky guys 🇺🇸
Thanks for reviewing this one, I see it on the shelves here in the states but have never tried it. It is definitely a good thing to try an appreciate things for what they are. Cheers!
Hi! Hopefully my message about appreciating whisky for what it is wasn't too condescending 😅 I think there's something important in it though. A whisky doesn't have to be the best to be good. Cheers 🥃
Thanks!
Much appreciated, my friend 🙏😌🥃
@ pleasure is all mine. Donations brought this bottle’s price down to a better amount. ☺️
@BourbonJazzyLife indeed! Cheers 😁🥃
You are correct. Mellow Corn is aged in refill barrels. They could use new uncharred oak barrels and still be straight corn whiskey but in this case they don't. Mellow Corn is a good mixer which is what it's really designed for. I do know lots though who also enjoy it neat since it is different than many other bottles. I personally enjoy wheat whisky for the same reason. Mellow Corn sells for about $20 in my area which is near NYC. By the way the charcoal filter brand you are thinking of is Jack Daniel's. They call that the Lincoln County Process. It's common for Tennessee Whiskey
$20 is great value for this. At that price, anything we get here is going to be 40%... and usually not good.
I was thinking of a distillery that specifically chill filters through charcoal. Unless that is Jack Daniel too? May have dreamt it 😅
I really like a wheat whiskey but I get bored of it quickly so rarely buy a whole bottle. It's a good thing to have to come back to on occasional. Variety is the spice of life and all that!
@@WhiskyLockyou’re thinking of George Dickle number 12, chill filtered sour mash Tennessee whisky. Sláinte 🥃
@@b1gsteve251 I think that's it. Thank you 😌🥃
The Evan Williams bottles say Charcoal Filtered on them. They are from Heaven Hill.
This is a rare chance to experience used bourbon influence in the Kentucky climate vs Ireland or Scotland. Perhaps that hay & earthiness is coming on in just that short period it was aged because of the heat here in the states. I have to get my hands on one of these. Thank you for the review.
Indeed! That alone makes it worth a try. Good point about the climate. Cheers 🥃
@ thank you. Btw I’m about halfway done with my HP 12 & went ahead & grabbed a Bowmore 12. Took a tiny sip & although slightly challenging I believe it will be perfect by the time I finish the Highland Park. Realy appreciate you sharing your progression. Cheers to you as well!
Never had this but I love Bains, and I respect you reviewing non-scotch non-malt stuff as well. There's usually plenty of reviews out there already for the well-known bottles, and reviews like these introduce me to stuff i wouldn't have looked into on my own 🥃
Thanks buddy. I love exploring these alternative spirits. I know a lot of people don't care when I review 'Sugar Beet Spirit' or Haitian Clairin but variety and novelty is definitely worth something. Cheers 🥃
I just think that used oak barrels could do wonders for bourbon. That jarring woodiness takes away from the sweetness, yes, but ends up ruining the finish most times.
I agree. Here's hoping it becomes more common 👍
I can get this, in Louisiana, and I enjoy it.
Hi Jay. I like this too. Glad I'm not the only one 🥃
@@WhiskyLock Thanks, and we can still find this one, sometimes, for $14.99 per 750ml.
@ronaldtheriot great price 👍
Thanks for this, straight corn whiskey gets so little attention in the US. I have 2 bottles of Mellow Corn myself. This is a goldmine that American distilleries are ignoring, meanwhile Mexican distilleries are coming out with several corn whiskies that, so far with the ones I've had, are outstanding. So many different kinds of corn down there, most are ancestral heirloom corn too.
EDIT: I too just finished a bottle of Bernheim straight wheat whiskey. Not bad indeed but because it's wheat, the cask dominates throughout.
Mexican Corn Whisky! I'll have to have a look for those. Not on my radar at all yet. Thanks for sharing your experience. Cheers 🥃
@@WhiskyLock Cheers! Most Mexican whiskies are corn-based, but since you're obviously a malt guy, look up a Mexican single malt called *Prohibited Ley Seca.* I don't have any myself but I'm working with my local ABC supplier in getting more Mexican whiskies special order. But Prohibited Ley Seca is specifically a Mexican single malt, 40% & aged 3 years in toasted American white oak from what I can glean from internet searches. It's from the Bajio area of Mexico & its "producer" is Cervecera Mexicana (producer = distiller?)
Keep in mind though that, like Japan, _Mexico has no laws governing the production of its whiskies_ (unlike for its mezcals & tequilas).
Love the review and I always enjoy a review of Mellow Corn. First of all it's a genuine corn whiskey, affordable and 50%. Can't complain. It's not bourbon but it's a high corn whiskey with a ghost of bourbon about it. Apart from the cask issue I believe that the corn content has to be beyond a percentage to be considered corn whiskey. It's dirt cheap in the U.S and well worth it. I've had a couple of bottles but the last time I realised it's rather simple with little complexity. However, it really does carry a corn profile and that makes it worth considering if you like to experiment.
If you really want to try a good corn whisky though I would highly recommend Balcones Baby Blue made from blue corn. It's much better than it used to be and I really like it. It doesn't hint at bourbon the way that Mellow Corn does. It's proper Texan whisky.
"A ghost of Bourbon about it" well put!
We talked about Balcones before and I still need to try them again. Wasn't impressed last time but that was very early days and we need to not judge distilleries by their first efforts. Cheers WT 🥃
Nice one Shane, I was always curious about this one but I have tried some other corn whiskies and did not enjoy any of them before. It's a fun looking bottle though! Cheers!
It's a category that I'm curious to try more of. Especially from the recommendations in the comments for Balcones and Mexican Corn Whiskey.
I like the label too. Many... do not 😅 Cheers 🥃
Excellent review again, Shane.
Never tried this one ... and for multiple reasons. Most important: never seen it (here in NL), but also never looked out for it. And if I should have seen it, I most likely would have left it where it was. First because of the (colour of the) label and secord the "corn screem": have not tried a corn whisk(e)y that I liked. And indeed, I do not like the bourbons I've tried.
So I'm happy to leave this one for others to enjoy.
Slàinte mhath
Ah sounds like it's not for you my friend. Thanks for watching and commenting anyway 👍🥃
I love this stuff
I've seen this one before, but I don't think it is available here at the moment. From what I remember it wasn't too expensive. Bains is readily available. Always good to explore malternatives. Cheers!
Can't beat a malternative to keep things interesting! Also can't go wrong with Bains. Cheers 🥃
In case you're wondering, the "bottled in bond" banner at the top of the label is a legal standard in the US. It was originally created to ensure a higher level of quality, as liquor production in the late 1800's was basically anarchy. BiB whiskies must be a minimum of 4 years old, distilled in the same season, bottled at 50% abv, and have no additives for color or flavor.
Everyone I've given Mellow Corn to blind has reacted in pretty much the same way, which is "yeah, that's pretty good; I like that." Then I tell them it's $20. My sone doesn't like bourbon or scotch, but he likes this stuff.
I can see it being a great whisky to get people thinking and break preconceptions 👍🥃
To be a corn whiskey it must be a mashbill of at least 81% corn. But there is no requirement that it be either new or charred barrels for aging which is a requirement for bourbon. It's possible to have the two overlap and be a bourbon that is a corn whiskey.
By the way, the other product is called "Georgia Moon" instead of "Georgia Moonshine".
When I recorded this, I was thinking that something could be both a Bourbon and a Corn Whiskey. But I think Corn Whiskey IF aged, can't be matured in new AND charred oak 🤔 Which seems like a set of rules to prevent things being both. Have I got that right? Not sure on the credibility of my sources as I don't have the actual regulations. Cheers 🥃
The fundamental difference between Bourbon and Corn Whiskey is indeed the mandatory use of refill or uncharred new oak casks in the latter. Corn whiskey must also be 80% corn or higher, but the wood is the hard divider. (Many bourbons also meet the 80% threshold.)
Ohh, is that why it is so much cheaper, because they can save on the barrels.
That's right, Jason. But it is also permitted for the corn spirit to be unaged. I believe (not 100% certain) that if unaged it can still be called "corn whiskey", unlike a sub-80% corn unaged spirit (i.e. a would-be Bourbon), which must be called "white dog" or similar. Unless that white dog has "touched the insides of an oak container" - when it can then be called "whiskey". And Mr Lock, you can indeed be drinking crap like this. They call you mellow yellow (quite rightly).
@@hordeum-vulgare Yeah, it can be unaged... but if it sees wood, it must *not* be new charred oak.
I did get a kick out of that PBR whiskey that was proudly 5-second age stated on the label. =D
I guess it's my usual preference for Refill coming out again but I don't mind it at all. Are Light Whiskies gaining much traction yet?
@@WhiskyLock so it's like a normal Whisky setup, without the silly bourbon rules. They could be quite clever with this, and look into age statements and barrel finishing, however the daft yellow branding is problematic!
This one is I think more appreciated by Scotch drinkers than bourbon folks in the US. The1st fill ex bourbon barrels instead of new makes it mellow (pun intended). The logo on the left side of the label with the M is from the now gone Medley Brothers distillery where this originally came from. Heaven Hill also makes Wathens, Old Medley, and Medley Brothers Bourbon keeping the legacy of the old distillery alive.
I taste the mellowness. I can also see how drinkers of 'proper' Bourbon might not get on with it. I'm enjoying it though. Thanks for the info on the logo and original distillery. Cheers 🥃
What a coincidence you reviewed this as it was put in our groups advent calendar as a curve ball….. for day 1 😳… some suspected a hint of rye as well🤷♂️but we all agreed it was good but average. It can be readily bought in my area for $17-$20.
Cheers 🥃
Coincidence indeed! I've been meaning to try this for a couple of years and took the plunge out of the blue.
It is a very pleasant dram. Just wish we could get it for $17-20 too. Cheers 🥃
A couple fun facts for you about Heaven Hill. The founder's last name was "Heavenhill," and due to a clerical error, the distillery name "Heaven Hill" was born. HH also distills and ages single malt! In fact, their LE Parker's Heritage this year is Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey aged 14 years and finished in reconstructed heavy toast cognac barrels.
Thanks for the info 👍
Thanks!
Grabbed one of these the other day after your review & absolutely loved the refill character on this very bourbon like mash bill. No brainer for me to keep one on the shelf at that sub 20$ price tag. Wanted you to experience that same exact value aspect of this bottle’s charm like we can. Thank you again.
P.S. screw waiting for something to go on offer when you really want it 😂😂😂
Thank you my friend. Much appreciated 🙏🥃
@BourbonJazzyLife ah really glad you're enjoying it too. A real steal for $20 and thanks for sharing that value 😁🥃
@ oh yes very much. Corn is so much more nuetral than barley that this feels like a good insight into refill bourbon maturation. I do agree that bourbon can come off too sweet & actuallly I’ll throw in thin & one note. That’s coming from a ten year plus bourbon fan. At its best though the percentage of that more nuetral grain along with fresh charred oak are a beautiful expression of what the oak can offer. I often joke & say bourbon should be called, “fresh oak flavored vodka”. On a more serious note I would point fans of Scotch to more Rye Whiskies. Can get a little more balance of spicy or earthy along with the sweet. I don’t drink them enough myself but I always enjoy them when I do.
