I didn't realise Black Bottle was that old. I only started noticing bottles of the standard and the 10-year-old here in the last 2 years and never heard anyone mention it before, so I thought it was a fairly new brand. That's a really nice-looking water jug you got with it. Cheers!
Oh yes. Even the current bottle shape has been around for 10yrs now. And something resembling this old 'green bottle' has been around for over a century 😳🥃
Thanks for reviewing this whisky, it's been quite a long time since I've had any Black Bottle editions. I do tend to like maritime notes in my whisky. Cheers!
I will have to do that one day. Old bottles seem to go up in price quite a bit once you get to the 1970s but I think that's probably where the really good stuff starts. Cheers 🥃
I used to drink it all the time in the mid 90s to early 00s when it had a very distinct Islay character, it was the best budget blend. It had a similar but different label to your bottle & I seem to recall it being about £13, I was they made it like they used to.
So many whiskies just aren't what they were, right? Sounds like the one you're talking about is what I need to get hold of. Black Bottle has been through a lot of styles over the years. Have you tried the Black Bottle Alchemy Series Island Smoke? It's not subtle but is a very smoky and fun version of Black Bottle. I really enjoyed it. Cheers 🥃
@@WhiskyLock If you search online for images of "black bottle whisky from the 90s" you'll see the bottle that I'm on about. It has a very similar label to yours, but black bottle scotch whisky is written on a cream coloured scroll and there's a purple & green thistle in the upper left corner. And it also says:- "finest scotch whisky with a heart of Islay" on the label. It well worth buying if you can find one, as your verdict will go from good to very good. I've yet to try the new range of their whiskies, but I'll no doubt give them try in the future. Cheers.
@@WhiskyLock Unexpectedly one of Ralfy's old reviews, comparing the new black bottle with the old black bottle has appeared on my UA-cam. If you look for "ralfy black bottle" you'll find that video, along with another video (review 16) where he reviews the old black bottle that I used to drink.
I've had some great luck with blends from the 60s-80s at auction. Standout was a Chivas 21 Royal Salute from the early 80s but even just a JW Black can be really, really good whisky. And don't sleep on a 70s Dimple... It's hard to say what's from period production and what's from half a century of bottle aging, but there's certainly a unique character to that older stuff you won't find in modern malts at any quality level.

Thank goodness for the Alchemy series. Good whisky and good prices.
Couldn't agree more 🥃

IMHO the regular version is quite lacklustre but all of the Alchemy Editions are fun and great value. Worth a try. Cheers 🥃
Vintage bottles are very interesting. I would love to see your take on something from the 60s/70s. Great review! Cheers, Shane!

Good video Shane, still got a bottle of this sitting on my shelf that I bought donkeys years ago. I actually like this blend. Slàinte Shane.
I like it much more than the current version. I think I my expectations were a little high though. Cheers 🥃

@@nickashton3049 I think I've seen that one at auction too but it was a little more money than the one I settled on. Buy cheap buy twice eh? Cheers 🥃

Half a century of bottle aging... intriguing thought! I actually have an old Dimple also from auction. Looking forward to it now. Cheers 🥃
