Wild camping and ancient landscape airscapes
Exped Dura 5R | Sleeping Mat | Unboxing
The Exped Dura 5R is a durable 3-4 season inflatable sleeping mat with its own pump sack. Geared towards durability rather than weight saving, I am hoping that it will hold up to future wild camping abuse. Here, I unbox it and try it in my Abisko Lite 1 tent.

Fjallraven make great tents. Oxfordshire has lovely scenery. But are they both really up to it? Is this a Hilleberg rival? The Abisko Lite 1 has served me well, but it may have an achiles heel. I pitch up near The Ridgeway above the Devil's Punchbowl to take a look.

Wild camping sunrise above Abergavenny in beautiful Wales with my work friend Alex, using my Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 on The Blorenge (561m) which is in the South East corner of the Brecon Beacons. Alex suffers from being lazy and so this was the perfect trip for him; he even had his own special car park, closer to where we were camping! The Abisko Lite 1 by Fjallraven is a one man, extreme weather tent, comparable in design to the Hilleberg Akto. With a two section video coming up on how I am using "semi-wild camping" to then ease me into proper mountain wild camping, I have bought this tent for the latter activity, all being well! In the video I unbox the tent, and show you around it. Do contact me in the comments or on Twitt...
Cribyn - Up and Above

Cribyn is perhaps the most beautiful peak in the Brecon Beacons, especially when viewed from above. Dwarfed by its neighbour Pen-y-Fan, it has a narrower and less crowded summit with astonishing views. On this trip, my son was with me as it was his birthday; we included Fan-y-Big as well because of the views from the "diving board" at the top. I really hope you enjoy this footage. I have anothe...

The Watlington White Mark Myth

Hi Hedley, look forward to seeing the live trials. I think we used carrymats a bit of thin foam everyone used to have their slung under their rucksack!! It certainly inflated quickly great idea those pumps!! All the best
@@davidberlanny3308 they are great aren't they! I am currently camping high up on Dartmoor using it. So far so good!
Fjallraven don’t have any customer service unfortunately. They do make great high quality tents but if something goes wrong or it isn’t right you are on your own sadly. I would never buy a tent new made by them ever again. I would and have bought a second hand tent of theirs though just because of the cost saving. I have an Abisko View 2 and an Abisko Endurance 4.
@mulreid thank you, that has kind of confirmed my fears. Agree the tents are incredible however if I ever have any customer service nightmares with them I may become vocal! Thanks for warching, Dartmoor next!
Thanks for this Hedley, in the market for something like this, its always a little difficult due to cost and personal preference - will be interested to see how it fairs on your trips. Phill
@@phill2383 thanks Phil, first test coming up shortly!
Cats with fighting daggers and inflatable beds do not go together. Prepare to get very familiar with the repair kit. R values are the thermal properties of the material its made of but thickness of that material needs to be also put into that equation to see how good a performer it is (also 70mm is not 3"). For comparison the same R value equates to 165mm of polystyrene so that is quite a claim. Will be interested to see how this performs under the Hedley snoozing frame in Winter.
@philipbellew9645 we will see! There was also an "8R" version but that seemed silly. Hopefully in just over a week I will try it out high up on Dartmoor!

Hiya Hedley, great video mate and beautiful sunrise footage. I've pitched up on the Skirrid and Sugarloaf but yet to even walk the Blorenge let alone camp there. Do you mind me asking, where abouts do you park to start the trail mate. I've got an idea is it the 'Fox' something or other carpark? Cheers pal. 👍
@1984flicky Hi Chris thanks for watching. Fox Hunter car park is the place to start, it's free. Follow the path over the summit and keep going down straight ahead to get to this place. Bear in mind it is also a hang gliding site but there are plenty of places to pitch up.
@@hedleythorneApologies for the late reply Hedley. Thank you very much for the info mate that's fantastic. 👌 Hoping to head up there very soon for a camp. Cheers buddy. 👍

Hello Hedley. That was very nice. That's a beautiful spot. Great drone images. Looked pretty windy. Beautiful morning views. Very nicley edited. Nice music too. Why you and your boys stay at Grwyne Fawr Bothy soon? I've done two vids there. There's a river outside the door and it's a beautiful spot. Ask me any you like about it and I'll try to answer. Take your tents with you in case someone's in the bothy It's a perfect place to camp. I'm sure you'll love it. Wild ponies outside the door, and a huge reservoir next to it. Your drone would be brilliant there👍
I am always open to new ideas and so thank you, I will look into that bothy. Just like you I am a sucker for lovely views, especially from above! Thanks for watching, appreciated.
Update: I now think the Vango may be over 15 years old! It is doing well.
Very nice place and the tent looks great. Beautiful drone images at the end. I think the weather and sky was a bit better for you on the Blorenge last time👍 All the best on your next one soon👋

@@hedleythorne Very good👌 It's only 35 minutes away for me I was in high winds on Pen y Fan last Friday, it snapped my tent pole at 1am. There's some great places up this way. I've been to a few bothies. Looking forward to your next Blorenge camp vid👍
@@JamieHarding5 ouch! I hope the tent managed to keep you safe and warm despite the pole!
@@JamieHarding5 ah, now see your video is up! Will watch
I personally prefer the Fjallraven, but a friend of mine recently ditched his and went to an Akto, he's happy. I think the Akto is the better cold weather tent, but the ventilation is not great. Interseting debate Hedley.
@DavidEardley-ul9pz thank you. I think they are really close, I just hope Fjallraven customer service is better than I have heard. The Abisko is definitely more versatile and I think more comfortable.
Hello there - considering getting one of these for cycle touring. What is the condensation performance like? Thanks for the quick review. John
Hi John, I have used the tent three times - two of which had nearly no condensation and the third had a LOT of condensation due to very damp air and no wind, however it didn't come into the inner tent so was dry in there. In the spring/summer/autumn you may be able to keep the door half cranked to eliminate this as the inner is surprisingly warm, but obviously in colder weather you need to close it right up. That said, I'd imagine any tent of this size has condensation. I have the footprint now which adds a little weight but helps.
Great job 👍
Thank you so much!
That is a very good tent Hedley, as I have seen. And what a fantastic location. I'd love to wake up and look out at that beautiful scenery in the morning. Cheers, Warren :)
Thank you Warren, it is nice to have this in my "locality". (But yes, give me Wales anytime for camping!)
Hi Hedley, it looked really dry and wild in the punchbowl, some great aerial footage👌👌. Interesting discussion on tents and customer service. Next time camping? All the best
@@davidberlanny3308 thanks so much for watching. Yes I feel another camping trip coming on, maybe next weekend in Wales..!
Did you visit Uffington White Horse and Waylands Smithy? Interesting the dark green colour of your tent was quite conspicuous in that landscape. Maybe the sand colour would blend in a little more.
@@pauljacks3014 you’re probably right about the colour of the tent to be honest, maybe a Welsh pine forest would be better! I live nearby so visit Uffington area often yes, I love it up there. Thanks for watching

Hopefully the Fjallraven proves to be a long laster with no issues. My Terra Nova dates back to the mid 1990s and is still going. Quality lasts and when its outdoor kit you don't skimp as failures can ruin your trip. Love the lone walker in the landscape drone shots.
@@philipbellew9645 thanks Philip. Yes I love doing long-distance walk by shots. With the drone you don't need to keep going back to retrieve it too!

Beautiful footage Hedley! I walked past the Devil's Puncbowl towards the end of a recent expedition (in the "A Bit of the Ridgeway and a Wild Camp" video) and the brief glimpse I got of it then was quite impressive. Great to be able to see it in more detail here!
@@tweedyoutdoors I do seem to recall that video yes, though I will re-watch it. From The Ridgeway the splendour isn't apparent, you can only really see it from afar.
