Hilleberg Soulo Red Label - unboxing and walkaround
The Hilleberg Soulo is a highly capable 1 man tent, and so naturally I have bought one! I did strongly consider the Nortent Vern 1 for a while which I consider to also be a very capable tent, but in this video I explain why I went for the Hilleberg (I am not yet a fanboy but love the tent) and why I still recommend the Vern 1 if the Soulo is just too expensive. Which it is. VERY. In fact, I have named the tent "Temu" so to throw Mrs T off the scent and maintain my marriage...
New adventures on here soon with this tent. It compliments my Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 (which is damaged inside) and offers more headroom and wind holding. I buy everything with my own money and am not paid to advertise or promote anything. It's just me and my strong views!

The Sugar Loaf rises above Abergavenny in South Wales, it is the beautiful gateway to the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. On this climb my friend Neil and I started from the Porth-y-Park car park, a short drive up from the town. Our weather was mixed- heavy rain showers interspersed with sunny periods at the top, then heavy rain on the way down (too heavy to film in places). A superb da...

The quietest valley in Southern England?
What did you do with the ventilation? You said condensation was not important this time hence probably closed eerything in full with no ventilation at all?
@SoparinKielr in this case I had the end vents open but there wasn't much wind. I have just bought a Soulo which has worse ventilation still. But I would rather be in a warm, damp tent than a cold dry one. As we head into spring I will use mesh doors and keep the main door slightly open too but in midwinter I am happy to live with a damper environment so long as it is warm.
Had a few days riding the Sarn Helen, with a couple of nights on the Breacons last September. Dropped to -1, which was pleasant in a 2 season bag! 😄 Absolutely love riding up there! ✌️
@mokotramp Wow that must have been a cold night! Lovely isn't it, not many people about but great views
I was thinking about this tent, as I love the door set-up and nice vestibule! I am put off by the apparent shitty customer service as some people are saying, you've just echoed that! I'm not hearing great things about Terra Nova, either? With regard to getting what you pay for with outdoor gear isn't entirely true! Examples here with regard to tents are the OEX Phoxx 2 v2, which is bombproof and pretty much a 4 season shelter. It has a fair bit more space than the Abisco, as easy to pitch, I'd say as strong too? Only benefits I see to the Abisco are; around 350gms lighter, a larger vestibule and better door system. The Phoxx cost me 79 quid! Is the Abisco really 500 quid better? The other tent I'll chuck out as an absolute bargain, is the 3FL Gear Lanshan 1! So, do you really need to spend a premium for premium kit? I think not! As for Hilleberg, the majority of UK campers do not need a shelter of that calibre! As for the price...some folk have more money than sense! ✌️
@mokotramp Haha, I will be honest, I have had some QC issues with the Abisko and it is being repaired. I have a Hilleberg Soulo now, first outing coming up soon. I do a lot of mountain camping in Wales and for me the Soulo is just a kind of insurance policy that everything should be OK on the mountain top. If all else fails I can sell it for 80 per cent of the new price but will see how it goes. Phoxx are great, as are Jack Wolfskin- they perform well above their price point.
The Soulo appears a fantastic shelter, and for your type of camping in the mountains is justifiable! I've got a week's worth of bikepacking in June from Conwy to Swansea, through Snowdonia, across the Cambrians and Breacons. I'm hoping my little Lanshan 1 can cut it! I can grab an Abisco for 450, but given you've had issues I think I'll give it a miss! What exactly went wrong with it? Must admit I am tempted with a Hilleberg Enan! 😂 @@hedleythorne
@mokotramp an that bikepacking sounds absolutely amazing! The Lanshan is a great tent. The issues U had in my Abisko were the stitching coming undone on the inner, forming a hole above the door and also a tiny tear in the flysheet. Once repaired though it should all be fine, still a great tent. Undecided whether to keep it or sell it.
@@hedleythorneSort of leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, not the sort of thing you expect from a premium shelter. Hilleberg all the way I guess! 👍 Yeah, I did half the route last year, but had to cut it short due to adverse weather. It's the Sarn Helen way, around 400km and 10,000m of elevation. It's beautiful but brutal!
@mokotramp subscribed in the hope that you'll have it on UA-cam
It will always be my favourite tent and the one where I’ll always feel safest. I just love the fabric, the sand colour and it’s form. Perfect 🙏🏻
@SoloSarahBX You are so right! I just cannot wait to get it out there- Dartmoor in 2 weeks, already writing the video! Keep up your inspirational work, loved the Winnats Pass camp video- somewhere I need to see someday.
@ thank you so much ☺️ I have just subbed to your channel and look forward to catching up. I would absolutely love Dartmoor 🥰 have the best time testing your bomb shelter and I hope you give it a name…Hillary after Sir Hillary if you were wondering 😂
@SoloSarahBX I called it "Temu" to make it look cheap to my wife. She didn't fall for it, so I may need to live in it now...! Thanks for subbing, already subbed to you and look forward to your next video. -Heds
@ ha ha! Hedley, us women have special powers as I’m sure you know and joint accounts 🤣 I somehow got gifted my Soulo for my 40th Birthday! Play ya cards right next time like I did 😝🤜🤛
@SoloSarahBX I am doing it all wrong and need guidance! My wife definitely has special powers.
it's pronounced Solo ( As said by Hilleberg) It means Soul in Swedish. Other than that, fantastic video mate
@@hillenthusiast thanks, will try to remember that. Now you mention it, Petra Hilleberg herself says it how you do.
@ I said it how you did for years until I found out
Lift it and check the groundsheet for holes before heading out, quality is not what it used to be and dealing with their customer service is a nightmare.
@bgtrev will do, thanks. Fitting the footprint soon and so will check then.
Great ‘first look’ Hedley 😁. The beauty about tents is the great variety they come in! This allows a massive freedom of choice to suit individual circumstances. I bought my own preferred model to suit my own special circumstances (I tour in a microlight aircraft), and it does the job brilliantly, so I can’t really justify buying another one, though I do look on with envy (and occasional incredulity) as each new model is promoted as ‘the new best thing’. I see no need to ‘slag off’ anyone else’s choice, however, bought (like mine) to suit their own very different needs. Each to their own - Enjoy Your New Purchase Hedley. I will continue to watch with interest and pleasure no matter which tent you use😊!
@peterrobertson8141 Touring in microlights sounds like an incredible life experience! Wow! Yes each person to their own tent. It has taken a little refining to get here but this one seems to be the most suitable one for my purposes, time will tell. This model hasn't changed much since 2007 and I find that quite endearing, perhaps proof of it's design. Next adventure, all being well, Dartmoor! Thanks so much for commenting Peter. -Heds
The equation of market value and quality with regards to the Vern 1 or any tent is beyond ridiculous.
@VintageClips-rf7kt I think so yes. Hopefully it will do me well
Congratulations, Heds! I was very happy for you, watching this vid 😁 I feel very fortunate to own a Soulo (also a Sand coloured red label, as you know), and I'm going into my fifth year with mine. I think you've probably seen me camping in and pitching mine in some pretty unpleasant conditions, and it is ALWAYS up to the job. I immediately replaced all of the jangly zip pulls with soft zip pulls. One night of that percussion performance was enough for me 😂 I look forward to seeing what adventures you to get up to 😊 James.
@joinmeoutdoors thank you so much James! I may revisit THAT ledge on Cribyn again with it, but I feel the maiden outing will be somewhere delightfully remote in deepest Dartmoor. I am so excited to use it!
@hedleythorne The world is your oyster now! And making a habit of taking extra pegs/stakes "just in case" can give some extra peace of mind. As you said in your vid - in strong winds, you can separate those guys out. In 50+ mph winds I've ended up separating AND double-staking, so I had in excess of 20 pegs holding me down in the end. Not all tents provide the capacity to get so much metal in the ground! You will have a great time using it, I'm sure 💪
@joinmeoutdoors I carry four 9 inch heavy duty pegs with me which will go on the upper windward and upper side guylines if things get a bit gusty. Ultimately I should get delta anchors I think. My camping mate Warren has extra guys and a shipping rope on his black label version. Maybe he expects Putin to press the red button...?
@hedleythorne Maybe the Putin rope is set to be the hottest tent mod of 2025? 😅
Fantastic tent you’ll love it 👍
@Paul-eu9jp thanks Paul. Lots.of adventures ahead!
I knew it was going to be a Hilleberg 😁 enjoy Hedley there a great tent. I’ve had both red and black label, pitched correctly into the wind they can take a pounding. I’ve always used the footprint but never used the standard V pegs there just not long enough in my opinion, especially in the Lake District. I actually talk briefly about the Soulo on my next video. Atb Karl 👍
@TheSummitexplorer69 looking forward to your video then! I take 4x 9 inch pegs for the windward side and will use the spare 4 for doubling up other guys. I check the MET Office app for changes in wind direction so should always manage footbox end to the wind. Thanks for watching!
They don’t come with a footprint and shouldn’t be pitch taut hilleberg have a video how set up isn’t the vern on recall
@garyh3228 Yes the Vern is being supplied with 10 inch poles now. I have ordered a footprint for the Soulo now- I have ordered from Quintcraft who make really nice ones. Yes the setup video shows that the longer poles are inserted first and so I will stick to that method. Thanks so much for watching
With all that space in the porch area there's no excuse now for not cutting an onion up. Looks a great tent!! Fun interview!! All the best!!
@@davidberlanny3308 hmmm I may take onions next time then!
Ha ha ha!! iam glad you did this!! Now you will have the same dilemma I have... after my fjallraven abisco light 1, I purchased the hilleberg solou black label with footprint... now I have to carry the hilly, when the abisco would do the job perfectly... I actually paid for the vern one and was waiting for its delivery date , then I watched the video of it failing in mild winds,,, so I lost my bottle ( valley and peak graciously gave me a refund) and purchased the hilleberg in sand colour.. have never heard my zips jinggle. Be careful when taking the cross pole out of its sleeve!. I love my abisco but iam honestly considering selling my abisco 1 and buying the abisco light 2 , just for the extra space and it's an excellent tent....Take care out there.
@littlegrandadoutdoors Thanks for commenting. Since that Vern failure video they have now provided 10mm poles and I think it is a lot stronger. I think the Soulo is a sound investment though and should last well. My Abisko Lite 1 is currently away for fabric repairs- I love it but the 20D fabric and inner tent is just a little too flimsy and brittle. Once repaired though, I will probably keep it so I can take my sons camping. In fact summer may be too hot for the Soulo anyway so best I hang onto the Fjallraven anyway. Thanks for watching
@hedleythorne I think I will get the vern 1....i use the lanshan 2 for summer , am thinking about getting the durston dome tent for summer though , it weighs about the same as the lanshan ... actually I think I have to stop buying tents, it's addictive...Take care out there.
@littlegrandadoutdoors the number of tents you should own is represented by the equation "N+1"(N being the number you already own) 😉. Seriously though, the Vern is sound- push the end poles in a little and tighten the straps (Fellman Dave's video) and it will take serious gale force winds. Just a little too big for my use as I camp among rocks.
hello Hedley, cool interesting video, well done and thank you 😊
@@davie941 thank you so much for watching. Sorry it wasn't my usual adventures but the next one should be!
Aaarghh...look at the camera/the people you're talking to!!! Grrr!!!!😊
@@shazzied72 No. No no no no no shan't. Haha
@hedleythorne 😝
I think you’re going to be very happy with this tent 👍. I find it a little smaller compared to some of my other tents that I now own like the Unna, but there is more than enough space for your gear and cooking. Even in rough weather. I actually think the Soulo’s biggest strength is its size, which has all you need to be comfortable and nothing more. This allows it to shed wind INCREDIBLY well! No stronger tent in my opinion. I sometimes see people getting unnecessarily heated in the comments online comparing Hillebergs to other tents. I personally try to stay out of it because I think people should just buy the tent that they think they’ll be happy with. As long as they’re getting outdoors and enjoying themselves, that’s all that matters. But there is a reason why people always compare other tents to a Hilleberg. I now own six 😅. Months ago I actually sold my 7 year old Soulo to get the BL Soulo and I nearly got full price for it. So when you look at the actual depreciation of the tents overtime, if you were to sell it at some point the money you would recoup is pretty crazy. Anyway, I always enjoy seeing your comments on my channel and I look forward to seeing you enjoying your new tent. All the best 👍
@GoingSoloOutdoors Thank you so much for the information, your channel is utterly super - I mentioned it on my recent Wessex Ways podcast in particular relation to your amazing cooking. Agree that Hillibergs are always the benchmark and that, alongside the ridiculously high resale prices, was a driver for buying it. That said, there was a little domestic backlash and I think that if I owned six, I would be permanently living in them...! I cannot wait to get this pitched "in anger" and spend my first night in it. Coming from the Abisko Lite 1 I am used to a compact tent, but it will now be good to enjoy headroom as well. Thanks as ever -Heds
People love it, it'll keep you warm and safe. For me I love my StormStar ( 2.7 kg, spacious, like a rock in storms and is £545 imported. )
Just subbed Hedley 😉.....not sure if you are weight conscious, if you are Lucy Quinton makes lighter footprints which are really well made and fairly priced. . She has made a vestibule only footprint for 3 of my previous tents because i have 100% confidence in Hilly tent inner bathtubs and dont really concider a full foot print to be nesasarry . The Sand colour is very classy 👌
@Olan... thanks, I have just ordered a Quinton footprint (full) as I have heard good things about them. Watched your video about the Soulo (already subbed) and thanks for subbing back. First outing with this should be Dartmoor!
Hedley! Great video, funny and imaginative, but, Hedley!
@Fellmandave1 I was really worried that I may lose your subscription Dave and I am glad that I haven't, but I promise that I'm not a complete hilly fan boy and continue to admire the excellent Norwegian tents. Personal experience with the Soulo with Warren and smaller footprint confirmed this purchase for me.
@hedleythorne I've nothing against Hillebergs at all Hedley . It's just the bigots I can't be doing with. The subscription is safe!
@Fellmandave1 I am disgusted at some of the comments from some. Agree Hillebergs are great tents (hence my purchase) but I cannot stomach some commenters slating anyone who reviews a different brand. The Internet is filled with idiots.
Looks like a good well thought out piece of kit. No doubt you will be testing it in this garden location at the bequest of Mrs T. With all that additional headroom we expect greater things from your next adventures.
@@philipbellew9645 thanks for watching! I feel ready to take it to Dartmoor...
Treated myself to one for Xmas and looking forward to getting up on Dartmoor soon to test if out. My lad went for the KUIU storm star 2 but it’s current sat at customs so we will have to wait a bit longer before our first outing together. Looking forward to seeing the vid for your first outing in it.
@bbbolty8112 the Storm Star 2 is equally at battleship in the wind, that is two premium shelters you will be out in there.
Well, you went and did it. Well done!
Thanks. Let's see whether it lives up the the hype eh.
Oh yes! Such a good tent! Looking forward to comparing details next time we are out in the mountains. The footprint obviously adds a bit more bulk and weight but I'd use one for sure. Cheers, Warren :)
@Linleys agree about the footprint, it transformed by Abisko. It is on order from Quintcraft
See you got the tent out with the big boys now 😂
@steveoutdoors6522 My grown up's tent!
You look well chuffed with that tent Hedley and rightly so 👍 it looks a cracking bit of kit. Looking forward to seeing you out in it soon. Take care, Simon & Mark
@@Twin_Peaks_Outdoors I can't wait to use it. Just seen the Bushman and Blue video where he and Kris crammed into a Soulo in a stormy whiteout on Blencathra! First pitch for mine will be Dartmoor. Thanks for watching
You are going to love this tent. I agree with you in that it is the benchmark against which all other one person tents are judged. It should last you a long time, offsetting the high initial cost.
It is a win/win situation- I could sell it for a high price, or if not it may last me for decades! Agree there was a little "domestic shock" at the price but this feels like a solid purchase. Thanks again for watching! Next excursion should be Dartmoor again. -Heds
Happy Days 😊
Ooo I hope its got room to sit up properly thats my main tent need... look forward to finding out as ive been through 10 tents in 18 months
@Chilternwildcamper my Abisko Lite 1 has rips in both fly and inner and I don't know how, that is being sent off. This new tent is stronger, better in wind and you can sit up in it. Watch this space shortly...
@hedleythorne I've ordered a Durston Dome as I like a freestanding so excited for April.
@Chilternwildcamper sounds like a great idea, I am watching a video about that tent right now. I LOVE new tent day!! My video of the unboxing goes live in a few minutes at 6pm (pity UA-cam can't show that new tent smell!)
Update- hole in the inner and small tear in flysheet, so sending both for repair. Not as strong as first thought then.
Superb Hedley. I always like the walk up from Aber. The woods are special - they're sessile oak woodlands all gnarly and splendid. Re-the top it's one of the best views for sure. You did a good job with the drone. I was only up that way the other week. It has a vibe about it. Well, good going. All the best. Mark
@WyeExplorer thank you so much Mark. This woods are rather special, such an ancient feel to them.

Great drone footage at the start Hedley, looked a really interesting place. Glad the farmer let you stay for the night that’s decent of him. @ I’m no film maker Hedley I’m still learning the ways of UA-cam, but thanks for the kind comment. 🙏👍 Watching your video now pal.
Abisko Lite 1.... I'm trapped with it myself. The only problem I see is the lack of availability for spare parts. What if you breack the main pole? Probably the pole for an Akto may work... What if you lose one of the four shorter poles? good luck with that :D. I've searched a lot and there's no spare parts at all from Fajlraven... but thy continue selling the tent.
@SoparinKielr other chinks in the armour... a hole has developed at the top of the inner tent zip at the stitching. Fjallraven have referred me to the vendor who is yet to respond. I will cover this in a future video I think.
Living in Scotland (and aged 71), I’ve never been to Dartmoor. I feel I’m really missing out now! Must try to get down soon while I still can. My wife and I both loved the mustard sketch @ 2:40 BTW and have now subscribed 😊
@peterrobertson8141 thank you so much. Dartmoor is really, really special in places and it is about getting the right area really as in other places it is very remote. My son and I did a super little walk around this area yesterday in amazing weather. That mustard stunt made for an uncomfortable hour afterwards...

@Chilternwildcamper such a wonderful ancient area this part of The Ridgeway, it must be hard finding a pitch along it with a tent sometimes.
@hedleythorne there's a wide part I found which was great last April. I returned last Summer but the grass was up too long and abit yucky but there's bits of woods around just off the Ridgeway to camp. I always feel legit camping off the Ridgeway as I can look like a long distance walker! I'm camped by it tonight, just west of Chequers!
@@Chilternwildcamper ooh I may look into that area then! Thanks
Hi Hedley, This was a wonderful intro, the selection of music was perfect coupled with your drone clips - excellent!! We used to call these camps "bluenosers" - you both looked as warm as toast. Never seen frost like that out camping though!! I think we're going to have to send you out on a fine wine and cookery course, if you're lucky you'll get a lesson in a ditch overlooking a vineyard!! (no citrus ale allowed as far as I know) It's left me itching to get out unfortunately laid a bit low post op, nothing major - no rain so my water courses will be dry!! All the best!!
@davidberlanny3308 thank you so much for watching, love the "bluenoser" term! You popped up in conversation today at the Whitewick Studios opening party!
You are becoming the Grand Master of Drone videos... Great stuff Hedley...
@@Jazzshots thank you so much! Appreciated
