The Ridgeway at Uffington; a Winter Sunrise Walk

- Sunrise over Uffington White Horse and castle, followed by a 10 mile return walk along The Ridgeway in negative temperatures to the Letcombe Bassett "Devil's Punchbowl" and back. I filmed the outward walk but not the return. The purpose of this walk was to get aerial photographs, and I apologise for the er, state of my nose (I should have checked!).
I then went on to look at Rams Hill hillfort- now buried by agriculture, but CAN we see if from above in low sun - can we really? Let's see in this video.
On the return trip I saw a kestrel knock a buzzard out of the sky, and there were plenty of Fieldfares in the hawthorn bushes along the way. Oh and one day I will be able to buy a wind proof microphone - sorry about that. Do feel free to buy me a coffee, these videos aren't free to make, thank you! www.BuyMeACoffee.com/HedleyThorne
A great walk-Totally enjoyed-Thank you Hedley !
Thank you so much!
Absolutely stunning aerial images Hedley. Thanks for sharing your walk without making us set our alarm as early as yours.
Thank you Barry! Early start and subzero temperatures but magnificent to be up there at that time
I think Ramshill fort being univallate could well have been a stock enclosure similar to Segsbury camp. In Neolithic times you can imagine there would have been a lot more tree's around.
I wouldn't mind betting there was a small settlement close by where the farmers lived.
Interesting, I wonder how it changed through the Roman period too as agriculture "took off". I am going to process a picture I took from the drone and see if Twitter can lend expertise too. Thanks again, great information, appreciated.
Oh what fantastic views! The subtle lines of the fort at Rams hill are there, just, but the shape of the earthworks by the white horse are so dramatic. Lovely in the golden light. Beautiful. :)
Thank you Warren, I am talking with Historic England about Rams Hill and so I have forwarded the footage to them. Uffington is simply gorgeous.
Ooh. Just a ghost of Rams Hill hillfort. Well done. Great light!
Thanks, it's still there, juuuust!
Beautiful! Thanks for braving the cold to bring us these amazing images!
Thank you Sir! Rest assured, I am inspired by the best!
Hot coffee ☕️ ℹ definitely need to start doing that when out in the cold 🥶
Ohhh it was SO cold! I was stepping so carefully because falling over could have been serious in those temperatures. Worth it though...
Fabulous video - stunning landscapes, I know the area well loving the views from the air 👍
Thank you, we are so lucky to have this landscape accessible to us aren't we
Long shadow ❤❤❤
One of those moments when I thought "I wonder what that looks like from above?" Love owning a drone.
hello Hedley, very nice video , looked a bit fresh though lol, loved the drone shots as always , really well done and thank you 😊
Thank you so much - it was freeeezing (you can tell as my eczema has come out!) - but I really enjoyed it. The art is to keep moving to stay warm. Oh, and a flask of coffee of course...!
Lovely images. I can sympathise with the cold, even the slightest breeze gets very lazy on the hills. There is, slightly unusually for Heritage England, an excellent very detailed description of Ramshill on their Heritage Gateway site.
Ah perfect, thank you! I have sent the video to Historic England too along with photos, so will see what they say back. Thanks for the tip, I will read up on it!
Very nice walk. I wish I could do it someday. The drone sure helps to show the fort.
Thanks, it was a WONDERFUL morning for the walk; very cold but very clear and a beautiful sunrise!
Hi Hedley, even the mud looked cold up there!!
Great shots of the castle and white horse from the drone. I wonder if the other fort would show on lidar?
I hope you had something else, slighty stronger, to supplement that coffee, just for emergencies of course!!
All the best!!
Haha thanks- coffee only whilst driving unfortunately! Yes I am intrigued by Rams Hill- I have emailed Historic England to see if they have more. Thanks again for commenting David, it helps so much. Have a lovely day. -Hedley
Wow beautiful job ❤
Thank you so much
Wow Hedley, that ploughed out hill fort has really grabbed my attention. I need to know when, why and how that has been allowed to happen! Excellent video.
I am finding out more, I am in email chat about it with Historic England!
@@hedleythorne Been having a look myself. Seems to be a causewayed enclosure that became a hill fort, with a late Roman building too! But what I want to know is why has it been allowed to be ploughed out?!
@WC21UKProductionsLtd Others are going that way too unfortunately, it is heartbreaking. Perborough Castle being a good example. To the West of Uffington is another forgotten hillfort, Hardwell.
@@hedleythorne surely they’re not being ploughed if they’re scheduled monuments?
@WC21UKProductionsLtd certainly Perborough is ploughed in the centre, but they did spare the outer earthworks. Oh and it is only accessible by drone...
Fantastic video, Uffington is one of my favourite areas to wander, that ghost hillfort drone shot was stunning, great video Sir.
Thank you. Yes Rams Hill fort is intriguing, I have forwarded pictures and video to Historic England
beautiful views but i bet it was freezing
Ohhhhh it was!!
I need to find a better way of fading music in and out! Amateur UA-camr with limited software! 🙂
You could just put some text up, when the music should fade, telling us to put our fingers in our ears in 3… 2…
@@barryconway haha perfecto!
