What The Barefoot Shoe Industry Doesn't Talk About
Are we oversimplifying the barefoot shoe conversation? There's more to footwear than just minimalism. What functions do shoes need to provide in the modern, flat, hard, concrete world?

    I just got the Xero Prio Neo a month and a half ago and have been wearing them every single day (RIP to my shoe collection). They are the most comfortable shoes I've worn, and in general I'd super highly recommend them, even over the slightly cheaper Prio because the Neo has a softer upper that doesn't rub against the top of your foot / toes. With that said, there are two issues. The first really major issue is that they are dangerously slippery on wet surfaces, you will actually risk death if you happen to walk on something wet with water or oil, so don't even think about wearing them in a kitchen. This is really the biggest issue and I think it should be Xero's top priority to redesign the out sole to be more grippy, even at the risk of lowering durability. The second issue is that they're not very wide for barefoot standards, which hasn't affected me because I have narrow feet, but if you're a big lad and you're used to Vivo or something, they might feel too narrow.

    How would you not heel strike while walking though...? Personally I love my pai just because they don't look like 16th century peasants shoes, they just look like trainers, but they're nice and wide, zero drop, and flexible enough. The ground feel is only really a consideration for me when I'm running and obviously you'd be daft to run in these.

    I get what you’re saying but you can’t really rag on shamma because they were built for people who ran actual barefoot during competitions but need a little protection. I believe I have the super browns too and I agree that anything thinner would be too much. I started out using them for running but the thong was uncomfortable so I switched to xero shoes for that but recently I loosened up the strap system and now they are basically my everyday shoes. I would go for a thicker sole shoe if it had an easier and diy way to replace the sole.

    Yeah, standing on concrete is absolutely miserable in barefoot shoes. Walking on concrete is not so bad, but gets uncomfortable after a few miles. My issues with "normal" shoes are: too narrow, heel elevation/toe lift, and arch support. I do like minimal padding, but not if I have to stand on concrete all day.

    I'm gonna take it a little farther and say that 90% of the benefits of barefootware come from the wide toebox. There are benefits with a larger stack height, especially for heavier people and runners, and there are benefits for some heel drop, especially for people with longer femurs. But there is no benefit for a narrow toe box.

    A little hyperbolic in presentation but overall agreed. I don't really think most barefoot shoe companies or wearers advocate as "little of everything" as possible, beyond personal preferences. My most used/loved sandals are from Luna and Bedrock which are thicker and more structured, but I also have thinner ones. Same goes for shoes. I like super thin for workout and a little more cushion for road running or long walks (not always but usually).

    yup, mostly agree with you. My go to sandal is a diy huarache with a 4mm sole and it's definitely my favourite, but they really aren't fashionable and can be annoying because of how thin and minimalist they are. Walking in them all day is fine since my walking style has adapted, but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. I always have my Wildling Tanuki for more "fashionable" moments and working as a gardener and hiking is definitely more comfortable with the thicker sole on the Vivo Forest Tracker ESC. So just like with "normal" shoes it's best to adapt your footwear to whatever it is you're doing. Just one thing I don't really agree with: "Just go barefoot if you want it to be the most minimal possible thing". Yes, the thin sole doesnt provide a lot of protection, but it's better than nothing. As long as you watch out and don't go walking through nails or glass shards it's completely fine. Especially because one of my favourite things with barefoot shoes is the ability to really feel the ground. I made a thicker pair with 4mm sole and 3mm leather on top of it and it's just way too heavy and stiff for me. But if that's what you're looking for, go for it. Footwear isn't the same for everyone, so just find the shoe that your feet like the most :)

    I use my tanuki shoes for the gym. Have had them for 3 yrs they’re still good. And I am doing leg day with them. I’ll do machines and squats. Why don’t you think they’d be good for leg day? I like that they don’t have any sort of heel.

    • @simplelucas
      @simplelucas Місяць тому

      Oh nice! I said I don't use them for leg day primarily because I'm afraid I'll put too much pressure on the upper material of the shoe and risk wearing it out / breaking them more quickly (since they're a thinner, canvas-y material). That's a great recommendation though if you haven't had any issues!

    Vivobarefoot's Asana model is a great alternative where they aim for a more sneaker look on the upper without the chunk and still keeps the sole as is. There's plenty of barefoot companies that does the sneaker look, but no idea how they feel as i havent tried them. But i see Splay, Ohne, Origo follow the trend.

    Shoes do tend to get wider when you use them a lot because the shoes stretch. I didnt wear my prios for 2 months and i thought they were super tight. I wore them for everday for a few days and then they felt great. You can stuff a some sock in your shoes if you wanna stretch the toe box without having that more constrictive feeling for a few day.

    I think the problem lies in the usage of the word: 'barefoot' I'v had this discussion also with friends, when do you call it 'barefoot'? Under what stack height? In my opinion; zero drop + low stack height + good ground feel + wide toebox + no arch support = barefoot Are my 20 mm stack height Topos barefoot? I sure feel more from the ground then on my Meindls? What about Altra's Lone Peak with 25 mm stack height? Pretty flexible, lots of toe space, no arch support, zero drop. My freet Flex are really barefoot if you ask me. I think they have my complete list of 'barefoot shoe' characteristics. So maybe we should make - and use - other categories? Like the existing 'minimalist'. Softstar calls their shoes 'minimal' instead of barefoot, but they are very barefoot to me. I think the young market doesn't agree yet on what to call the different styles and thicknesses. 'Wide shoes' tend to be wide fore the forefoot, but do not necessarily offer space for the toes to splay and move around. What about 'natural footwear'? Maybe someone big shoe brand need to take the first step here? Come up with some different names for different styles, sure will make the searching for a specific shoe a lot easier. I know people who are specifically looking for a wide toebox, but not for zero (or low) drop. Not so easy to find. Anyway, the Zings are sold as barefoot, but it seems that you don't agree, what should they call the shoe otherwise, if not 'normal'. (there is not so much information on their website about weight and stack height I saw).

    • @Jo8Nathan
      @Jo8Nathan 3 місяці тому

      don´t wear them wile walking. it will stop you from using your foot the right way more and more which will help much more in gaining back the normal flexibility and strength. But definetely use toe spacers for a while like when your at home barefoot. Or I use them when doing stretches for about 20-45 min a day and they gave me a lot more flexibility after jsut a month. Now i am building on that with walking more barefoot and with minimalist shoes.
