Chi and Tsu in old-style (Myoan / Fuke) Honkyoku
Some people think that old-style honkyoku players (think Tanikita Muchiku, Kobayashi Shizan, or even my own teacher Takahashi Suiko) are "out of tune" or "can't play tsu meri." It's true that chi and tsu (along with many other aspects of our playing) don't sound like they do in modern shakuhachi playing, but this is not because we're out of tune. In this video, I go into detail as to how and why our playing is different, exploring factors like
- the scale we use
- location in place and time
- the specific shakuhachi being played
- the player
- music theory, feelings, and other stuff.
We also discuss what my grand-teacher Toya Deiko writes on the subject in his book Komuso Shakuhachi Shinan:
“In Shakuhachi no Hi-gi published in 1921 by Kobayashi Shizan (student of Higuchi Taizan), he says ‘Chi, u, and tsu, concerning their meri tones - in many cases, when these are to be played meri, there is no meri symbol attached to them, so you just need to know that they are all meri.’ However, he also says ‘since chi, u, and tsu, in many cases must always be played meri, you put your finger along the flute so that it rests just above the hole, rather than covering half of it.’ If we trust this just as it is written, then chi should usually be fusho (Ab) - but old flutes are made so that chi, when played as-is, is too high, so if you shade it a little we could understand this to mean that it’s Oshiki (A) - so the meaning is unclear… The first hole on Kyu-han wari shakuhachi is low, so it’s easy to produce tsu chu-meri and meri. However, for shakuhachi players used to playing yosen [inakabushi] honkyoku, tsu meri [meaning tsu dai meri, Eb on a modern 1.8] isn’t used very much, and being unaccustomed to it their meri doesn’t go all the way down; players who learned gaikyoku in Kinko-ryu and Tozan-ryu would say ‘those honkyoku players can’t play tsu meri.’”

In the hitoyogiri world, we use short netori pieces to literally "take" (tori) the "sound" (ne). You have to tune the hitoyogiri shakuhachi with your breath as you play, and as such learning its various modes can be difficult. Especially for those who are going to be joining Shawn and I for our hitoyogiri class in early 2024, this is a good way to get to know your hitoyogiri and get a feel for ...

This time, I use the Myoan version of the piece as a base, and allow the hitoyogiri's tonality and tendencies to influence the way the piece is played. Ikkyu always wrote about the sense of longing in the shakuhachi's (hitoyogiri's) sound, but at the time the use of the half-tones found in new...

    Loved it thank you! Question : when you talk about « old style » honkyoku, is it koto honkyoku? If so, is it Edo era?

    • @hon-onold-styleshakuhachic8017
      @hon-onold-styleshakuhachic8017 Місяць тому

      Old style honkyoku refers to shakuhachi pieces played by komuso in the Edo era. It can include some newer pieces, though, if they are played in the same style. The flutes used are different from modern flutes, with smaller holes, and meri tones are done primarily with the breath, not with the fingers. At most, the finger will hover above the hole a little bit.

    Thank you for this video, I enjoyed it with a coffee as well. The way you talk about God and Christianity is very soothing. I have a Christian background, but I was taught a very dry, austere and guilt based interpretation of the Bible which didn’t agree with me. It took me years of learning about Buddhism, Daoism and Yoga to find the common thread and understand that God/Jesus’ message was about love, light and liberation too. Shakuhachi music brings it to a whole new level where words aren’t needed anymore. Play/Pray indeed :) Your journey is inspiring. Thank you for sharing it.

    • @hon-onold-styleshakuhachic8017
      @hon-onold-styleshakuhachic8017 6 місяців тому

      リ is usually front hole closed; チ is usually front hole open - however, they're basically interchangeable, which is why they are both written next to each other in the notation. Within a piece, you kind of have to read the commentary to get a feel for which is being used - we'll address this in detail in the course.

I’ve always wondered why I could never achieve the tone colors I’ve heard and wanted to replicate or why I had to blow so very hard especially for the high notes. Now I know what I need to look for to find the instrument I need. Thanks for the lesson. Shakuhachi is a very niche interest for an American and it’s hard to find resources to learn or a teacher. In the tradition in which I was ordained as a monk, we know these three vows as the "three-bite vow", in Japanese "Sanshige" "IKKU I DAN ISSAI AKU NIKU I SHU ISSAI ZEN SANKU I DO SHOSHUJO KAIGU JO BUTSU DO" With the first bite, we vow to do no more evil. With the second bite, we vow to do only good. With the third bite, we vow to save all beings. This is how we complete the Buddha's path. It is recited at sesshins before every meal I like your way of playing and explaining shakauhachi.

      That's very interesting! Are you Rinzai zen? I'm aware that the vows are somewhat new as far as shakuhachi is concerned - I wonder if they were originally borrowed from your tradition, replacing "bite" with "blow / play"...?

    • @shakuhachiicchoken
      @shakuhachiicchoken 8 місяців тому

      Yes, I practise in the tradition of Rinzai Zen. The origin of my lineage lies in Hoko-ji 方廣寺. It is possible that the Myoan vows are borrowed from Rinzai Zen. Ultimately, I don't think it matters. It is important to me from which motivation or attitude they are spoken.

      Like old-style shakuhachi, hitoyogiri doesn't use half-holing, nor do you need to shade. The construction allows for a range of nearly two full steps for each hole, so that the tones can be made using slight adjustments to your breath / blowing angle.
