  • This is Nick Bellando playing a classical hitoyogiri piece from the Muromachi era in Japan, at the Nara Centennial Hall. Oshiki is the mode, roughly "A" but a bit below the modern pitch. The piece played is Yasuda, a piece named for the Samurai who wrote it, a Sosa-ryu Hitoyogiri master named Yasuda.
Thanks a bunch to my friend Shawn Head (www.shawnheadmusic.com) for setting this up!
If you want to know more about the hitoyogiri, you can check out my other videos, or visit my website at www.hon-on.com.
If you want to learn to play, I'm also starting a hitoyogiri class online early next year, where we'll explore the ancient Muromachi-era classical sounds of the hityogiri. My friend Shawn Head will be participating and helping, lending his knowledge of Shomyo chant to help us get a picture of the time's sonic landscape as we experience these ancient melodies.
For the class, I've also developed a low-cost hitoyogiri based on the Muromachi and Edo-era tuning and feel. It's coated in urushi and is decorated with "On-Myo," "The cry of the monkey," in pure gold - a reference to the origin story of the hitoyogiri, which identifies the ethereal cry of the Golden Monkey as the origin of the flute's sound.
You can find the hitoyogiri for sale on Shawn's site here:

And can sign up for the class here:

Sounds a little bit like a Ryuteki
