The V8 MONSTER That Britain Never Got!
The V8 MONSTER That Britain Never Got!
The Triumph TR8 stands as one of the most fascinating yet overlooked chapters in automotive history. This incredible machine, often called "The English Corvette," emerged during the disco era with a mission to challenge America's sports car dominance. Born from British engineering but powered by American muscle, the TR8 packed a 3.5-liter Rover V8 engine (originally designed by Buick) that could launch it from 0-60 mph in just over 8 seconds - impressive performance that turned heads in its day.
What makes the TR8's story truly remarkable is its rarity. With fewer than 3,000 units ever produced and only about 1,200 surviving today, spotting one is like finding buried treasure. Most were sold in America, while its home country of Britain received very few. The car's production was spread across three different factories, plagued by labor strikes and financial troubles that would ultimately contribute to its early demise.
Despite its short life, the TR8 left an indelible mark on racing history. Bob Tullius and his team dominated SCCA racing so thoroughly that officials had to add weight to the car to level the playing field. The TR8's story is filled with fascinating details - from prototype cars secretly sold as used vehicles to special California-only fuel injection models, and mysterious UK versions that barely saw the light of day.
The wedge-shaped design, Italian-influenced convertible styling, and American-derived V8 heart made the TR8 a unique blend of international automotive excellence. Today, with only about 50 examples remaining in the UK, this British-American hybrid represents a captivating piece of automotive history that deserves to be remembered.

3 Most Secret Cars! You Won't Believe Exists!
The cabraleigh , fastest car in Ghana in the 70's A road master
coupe is not pronounced`coop`
first engine pic is a diesel yet narration says petrol. these basic errors spoil it and make me assume you have little actual knowledge.
I watched a TR8 run in the SCCA back in the 1980's. Mountjoy's Speed & Autobody shop @ Summit Point Raceway. It was fast, handled well, blew away the competition until they outlawed it- cause he always won with it.
My dad and uncle had 505s here in Kenya in the 1980s. Another uncle, a coffee farmer, had a 504 pickup.
Was there another Citroen that had a similar body style?
in France and Germany you pronounce the models in hundreds, injust asked an old french guy who told me that I am wright about this. Peugeot 103 / centtrois / einhundertdrei / onehundredthree = 50 ccm moped 104 / centquatre / einhundertvier / onehundredfour = small car 304 / troiscentquatre / dreihundertvier/ threehundredfour = middle car 504 / cinqcentquatre / fünfhundertvier / fivehundretfour / big car
My dad had it back in the early in 90 , 😂
My family bought a new one in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1986. We had it for a week before it was stolen at gunpoint in broad daylight by four guys with machine guns! Good riddance, I always found the duck tail kind of funny.
Ah... easy done. Here's the moment our narrator confuses a TR8 with an elephant. 3:21
First major car accident was in the Estate version and the thing was a tank. The King is dead, Long Live The King??
Islero S interests me more than the newer stuff. Miura as well.
What a cool looking car. I always wanted to know more about it. Thanks for the video.
At 2:12 - That doesn't look like a drum brake to me. Was the narrated by AI?
Five Oh Four. Not zero. We had a 1971 version. Somehow it delivered 110bhp 1971cc. We lamented not ordering the break/estate/ Touring. Ours was the salon with four speed manual transmission. It felt fast to me as an eight year old. I wish there was a 504 now in 2024. Simple, tough, reliable, economic, smooth riding, comfortable, full of character.
The fact that this didn't get made on fear of competing with the corvette is truly peak general motors. Bro should've gone to mopar.
I've never heard any Brit say 'drophead'. We call convertibles convertibles. You might find a fossil calling them a cabriolet, doncha know, but I've never actually witnessed it happening.
As a child in Uganda in the early 70’s, the 504 was the car that my father and other successful family members bought. It was reliable and perfect for the roads. Too bad the Europeans stopped making such reliable cars, nowadays, Toyotas are the king of the road in Uganda, and because of reliability, a majority of Ugandans buy Toyotas.
SORRY, but THIS Triumph WASN'T designed by Michelotti, who designed all the successful Triumphs of the 60's and 70's. THIS car was designed by Harris Mann, who designed the decidedly more attractive wedge, the PRINCESS of the 70's
Though he did come up with an optional design but they went with Mann's.
Had a 87 bought new, but 88’s already out. So it was a leftover 87 Special Edition Conquest TSI silver with maroon leather. I traded in my 86 Olds 442 with 23K. mi. Couldn’t afford insurance, being only 19yrs old. Sold it, loved it very much. Decades later I bought a 88 Black on Black sunroof adjustable suspension model with the 1” wider factory wheels. The TiKco adjustable click manual struts were in need of replacing
How Mitsubishi went from making the likes of the Starion, Galant VR4, 3000GT/GTO and Evo to the rubbish they churn out now is a shame.
Great info, I had always been of the impression that the change to V8 had been a desperation move, so it is interesting to hear that it was already in the planning stages and ran into unfortunate times. Enjoying the channel!
I rebuilt a TR7 with a v8 for rallying it was the best car I enjoyed. All sideways
We had a 5 ooh4 super 7 bought from South Africa Peugeot was a king back in the day.
NObody called it the British Corvette. I worked for a BL store and drove dozens of these, I loved them.
Nobody forgot the Starion.
0:21 Is that a Triumph Stag in Magenta going through the traffic?
No. The Stag has a distinctive chrome B pillar. I think it's a Fiat 124 Spider.
The TR7 V8 is a really fun car to drive.
Leyland BMC Jaguar range rover all unreliable CRAP
looks like a vette
The best thing about the car was the engine. The awful bumpers made what could have been a pretty car an ugly one.
My dad had one and I got to drive it quite a bit, lovely little sports car. I own a TR6, but I still <3 the TR8. My dad had a prototype coupé.
I am neither a TR7, nor a TR8 fan. However, your video was excellent and enjoyable to watch. Thank you.
Britain didnt get any but they ran a FACTORY RALLY TEAM in the WRC...
🏅
Pertamax
Terrific research and story telling; I thought I knew a fair amount, but lots of info and pictures were new to me!
If you can’t even get the basic right, then don’t make “historical” videos…👎🏼👎🏼
Many Asians would pronounce "Starrion" as Stallion, not the other way around of course, due to the difficulty of pronouncing the R
Hello , which country must i go on vacation next 2025 to see many of those 504?
I had an early version Starion. The heads had a tendency to crack and/or blow head gaskets. Mine cracked the head and died. Significant turbo lag, but kinda fun when the boost came on.
A beautiful POS....wrong way to design a cobra challenger ...they shoulda basically just copied it duhh they ought to have known "cheetahs never prosper"
Oh yes u can say that again, can never forget this car, still know i can get one very very soon.
I love this types of less known stories about how a car was built. Thanks
I saw some of these cars in their old age on BLEXIDY's channel, and I was amazed.
Would any Maserati of that era do 185?
Lol
😂
Just that one
True it become the King of the African terrain!
Peougeot was king in Africa until Toyota came around and took over
My grandfather had a 404..simple, beautiful, reliable, comfortable
Unless you owned one - then it became clear that it ain’t perfect.
