Using my DIY obelisks and the first planting of this gardening season! 🌱🧅🌷🌼
Except for the baking powder, this is the recipe my mom has used for 60+ years.
Nicely done! Fellow southern Ontarian here, you did a very nice job describing our holidays and Remembrance Day. Your diys were simple and very effective.
Thank you! I'm finding it hard to feel "Christmas-y" yet with our temps so warm but it helps to see some greenery and bows. :)
Great ideas. Beautifu!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very pretty Natalie 😊❤
Thank you! It was nice to use things around the property. Mother Nature knows best!
Nice job, Natalie!
Thank you! I'm trying to get in the Christmas spirit, but our weather is so unseasonably warm right now, that it feels more like spring than winter!
Hi Nathali, I put my lights after remembrance day.and to avoid the cold snaps and freezing cold. My husband dont do any decorations so I do my best to put up my lights ahead of time after 11:11. But we also cut a fresh tree so our tree is gonna be a little later too.i do make also my own winter pots like yours to cut down coz.😅yours looks gorgeous.
Thank you! And Craig likes to put his lights up when it's still warm out, too, and then we wait to turn them on. But this year, he's been so busy that they're still not up!
Love your decorating ideas! Simple, pure, and so in tune with the true meaning of the season.
Thank you so much!
Can you roll into thicker disc then freeze??
Absolutely! I might do one or two that way to roll out for hand pies or lattice.
Can you omit the sugar if you want to make savoury pies?
I've never tried the recipe without the brown sugar. There is such a small amount spread over 8 pie shells, that I don't think it makes it sweet. I've used the shell for savoury pies such as pot pies and like the flavour. If you try it, let me know how it tastes!
Greetings from Newmarket ON! I’m so glad I found you! I have been considering starting a vegetable garden in the spring. I’ve subscribed and will be following along 😊
Hello Newmarket! I hope you take the plunge and start your vegetable garden this spring. I'll be happy to answer any questions you have. :D
Thank you for sharing 👏that is a lot of money savings Now a days
It's true that these days, you can save even more with a garden!
Fantastic video. Thanks for breaking it all down. I am in zone 5a, southeast Ontario. I have a postage stamp yard and manage to produce a lot of food. I have 2 8x4 raised beds and lots of containers. I originally found you when I was searching for loofah gardeners in Canada. I grew them for the first time this year and harvested 9. I am very happy with that as they're not easy to grow in our shorter growing season. Next year I'll start the seeds early and make adjustments later in the season to support the strongest loofah. I really appreciate and enjoy your videos.
Oh, thank you! And although I have lots of land, my garden footprint isn't that large either. But it's amazing how much you can grow even in a small space. I'm so glad you had some success with your loofahs! I love how many ways I can use them, especially certain pots where I don't want to scratch the surface with steel wool. I'm going to start mine a little earlier next year, too!
Thanks for breaking it down Natalie. We practically lived off vegetables all summer just to keep up. We're still enjoying fresh vegetables from the garden. The only thing I pickled was green tomato relish to keep ahead of the late summer blight. It's very good. It alone saved me about $80. Next year I might pay more attention and keep track for fun. Already I am missing working in my Ontario garden. It's good for my well being. Enjoy winter while looking in the seed catalogue!
It's amazing how quickly the savings add up, isn't it? I agree that being in the garden is good us. I miss it too, but it's nice knowing the garlic are in and setting their roots and that my lettuce under the cloche will give us some fresh salad for supper tonight!
@Escapetothe8thConcession It's a good rain today for the garlic and daffodil bulbs. When did you plant the lettuce seeds? Like the sounds of fresh lettuce.
@@mysparky2011 I planted a few new tulips for next spring just a few days ago! I planted the lettuce seeds about 3 weeks ago. Our weather is warming up again next week, so I'll leave it a bit longer.
Thanks for doing this because I think of this so often.. I'm a senior who loves gardening but now do container gardening. Talking about lettuce , one store sold a head for $1.99 and another store same week for .99. so I bought at .99 refuse to buy higher. Some now I'm thoughts are to grow the more expensive veggies I use more often and freeze. I'm in Maryland eastern shore (7B) and farmers here are harvesting and selling at farm stores the cabbages broccoli sweet potatoes. , for me with the cost of soil and other nessarry items I buy from them and freeze. I personally grew and froze, leeks, onions, carrots, Japanese eggplant, and peppers. As a female senior, can't do as much but this year my neighbor saw me doing the containers and he planted 3 tomato and gave me some and he and his wife are very picky senior eaters and he accepted the onions from me so that was nice. So for you bravo on the savings , we all have to think about this and choose wisely what is in our best interested. Enjoyed your video.
Thank you! And I WISH we could find lettuce for .99 here! Everything has gotten so expensive. And how wonderful that you are container gardening! I've often thought that containers can really provide a lot of food and you are proof of that! I love how much you managed to grow and what nice neighbours you have. :)
WOW that is awesome Sister 😊❤ SO HAPPY FOR YALL 😊❤
Thank you! It feels good to find some way to fight back against the crazy prices in stores these days. :)
@Escapetothe8thConcession AMEN to that
I would love to see more videos of canning plz if you can..thanks..what is the shelf life of these plz
I hope to do more! Home canned peaches should last 12 to 18 months in a cool dark place. I doubt ours will last that long!
@Escapetothe8thConcession thank you
What a beautiful harvest
Thank you!
Hi I am in Quebec zone 4. its takes approx 200 days to reach maturity in weather over 15 celcius. We have approx 120 days so I guess no luffa for us.e. Would not even know where to purchase seeds to try starting indoors
It is tricky in the colder zones... but I don't know if I would rule them out completely. They can be started indoors--I do even here in 5B. The important thing is they do NOT like their roots being disturbed, so it is best to start them in a type of pot you can plant directly in the ground such as peat pots or self-made newspaper pots. You can warm up the soil where you are going to plant them with a cloche. The other thing is, even though they are hard to peel when still green, it is not impossible. You can still get a useful luffa! As for the seeds, I got mine at OSC (Ontario Seed Company) www.oscseeds.com/product/luffa-gourd-seeds-5345/ . I assume the ship across the country. Good luck if you decide to try them!
Hi Natalie. I read an article that you can eat loofa gourds when young. Supposedly it's a healthy good for you food. I've never grown them. I was a bit envious when reading your commentor from Texas as we're heading into winter in 5B but our summers are so nice. Winter ice and snow has it's beauty too. We're all blessed no matter where we live in North America. God bless all gardeners ❤
Yes, I heard that about luffas, too, but I've never tried them. I have trouble enough keeping up with the zucchini! I always thought winters were our payment for enjoying spring...such a beautiful time of year. I, too, try to find the beauty in winter. Now that we have a wood fireplace, I enjoy curling up in front of it while snow swirls around outside the big window, feeling warm and toasty. :)
My garden season is over too! I wanted to clear the beds and get my garlic planted quickly, but a female hummingbird has been frequenting and hiding, playing in the plants all the time. I just don't want to touch or remove anything yet 😢❤
It's lovely that you are so concerned about the hummingbird. I love them. We have them here in the summer, but they've gone now--too cold.
Great harvest tho 😊❤ Sad it's over but the Good LORD knows we need rest time and family time. ❤😊 GOD Bless you Sister and your family 😊❤
It is so true! The garden needs a rest, and so do I!!
Oh LORD I can't hardly stand 30's temp. here in Texas. How do y'all warm your house. We have electric heaters in every room. Brrrr. 😢😊❤
We have a geothermal heat pump that we put in three years ago. I doesn't use any fuel, just the heat from the earth. And even better, it is our air conditioner, too. Saved our butts with the price of oil as it went SKY HIGH here.
@@Escapetothe8thConcession OH that's a Blessing 🙏❤️😊
You make pie dough just like my grandma use to make. No rest and put in the refrigerator!
I often think the best recipes are the older ones. No fuss--who had time for that back then?!
Where is the recipe
It is in the video description. Enjoy!
You can definitely get some cross pollinating going on in a garden where there are multiple types. I grow jalapeños and bell peppers and our neighbours grow very hot peppers, so sometimes I get super hot jalapeños or bell peppers that are more spicy than they should be!! Gardening can be so fun!! 😊. Thanks for your great videos!
Thanks! Yes, cross pollinating is a risk in my garden, so I don't always save pepper seeds. But I'm thinking now maybe I did save some bell pepper seeds. Who knows...I might invent a new variety!
That's quite a haul!
I was so pleased! I got 11 pints of hot pepper rings and 4 pints of pickled jalapeños out of the harvest. I wouldn't have guessed that at the end of August when there were hardly any peppers there!
This is awesome. I just showed my grown son how many peppers you got. He's wanting Mexican Cornbread tonight and you don't even have to go buy peppers 😊 lol ❤ Thank you so much for sharing ❤😊
I was surprised myself with the harvest because I was late getting them in and we had such a cold early summer. But the garden always surprises me!
Hi Natalie We've had 2 major frosts now. My garden is completely empty now, even my carrots. Just need to spread mushroom compost and scatter rye seed for a cover crop. Your peppers look great. I seldom grow them. Never get much of a crop. Yes strange 2 types on one plant. Well done! You look cute in your new shirt. Fantastic weather this week with no frost.
My garden is now empty, too. Always a little sad this time of year, but...the garlic is planted, so there is already hope for next year!
Just like mom used to do in fact, I think it’s the same yellow bowl. Thank you for sharing.😮
Tupperware's lifetime guarantee is no joke! My set is vintage now. LOL
Beautiful..what type of cabbage did you grow?
I believe it was "Golden Acre" cabbage seeds from Ontario Seed Company. Such a great comfort meal, isn't it?
@@Escapetothe8thConcession wonderful..thank you...yes it definitely is..thx for the delicious recipe..can't wait to try it
I have a similar recipe that I got in high-school in 1976, it doesn't have brown sugar. I'll have to try it. Thank you for the idea.
I find mostly that older recipes are more reliable, don't you?
Thank you for posting this!!!
You bet! It's almost time to make it again for this year! My family's guilty pleasure for sure. LOL
Lovely recipe that rolls out well. For me, I could not get eight crusts out of it; more like five. It might be because I used Crisco all veg shortening (it was on sale) and I was making a very plump apple pie. Perhaps I should have used more flour when rolling out, but I HATE the feel of flour on my hands and the mess it makes. My fault, not yours. No big deal. Now I know. :)
Glad you think you figured it out! I know if my shortening or flour (which I keep the extra in the freezer) is very cold, that makes it harder to roll. :)
G'day from Australia! We don't have Crisco here, but I will use butter and my fancy schmancy stand mixer that is too big for most recipes. I will be using my ceramic pie dish, 10" or 25cm so I will be mixing then freezing what I devise up. Thanks for posting!
Sounds great! It will taste great with butter!
Hi 😮from South Africa going to try ur Pie shells tku
Oh wonderful! So cool to hear from someone so far away!!
❤😂you got me there in your title😂😂 but that place is gorgeous. Weve been there but diferent camping site.also we used to go to lakefield.
It was our first time to that particular park, but we definitely want to go back!
Glad you had a nice time. Ontario has great parks. Never heard of that one. We usually go to the Parry Sound area. Oddly our son has a young yellow lab named Louie.
It was our first time at that particular park. It was so beautiful! We've also camped near Parry Sound--at Killbear Provincial Park. Loved it!
Lovely ❤❤❤❤
It's true what they say: "A change is as good as a rest." :)
Good to know about this place. It looks lovely.
It really is!
What A Lovely Place To Visit. I love how its nice and peacefully and quiet.
The perfect spot to rest and reset. :)
Your video presentation was very well done. You clearly showed and explained to us exactly what we should do. And you were so pleasant. Thank you.😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this recipe! My mom, and my Aunt both used to make these and I have lost track of the recipe!
You're welcome! We make this every year!
Good jobe done. I think a lot of us have spots like that. Thankyou from Nova Scotia.
It feels good to have it clean and organized before winter. :)
Greetings from Nova Scotia. I have been watching your channel for a while and I love your theme music. I always feel as if I am going to be watching the Great British Baking Show!. Anyway, what i am wanting to ask is if you have ever tried winter sowing in milk jugs and other small containers. I am going to give it a try this next year. I never seem to get my seedlings started early enough and always seem to be behind the 8 ball. I am in Nova Scotia in the Annapolis Valley, zone 6A. This is my 3rd year gardening. I am 78 next birthday and having the time of my life in my garden. Thanks for great content. 🌻
I love being in the garden, too. It touches something deep inside, doesn't it? I haven't sown in milk jugs...mainly because our milk here in Ontario comes in bags! LOL But, I do use repurposed fruit bowls, punch bowls, or wide vases as glass cloches. I have some lettuce growing under one right now, trying to squeeze one more harvest before the snow flies!
Can you use butter instead? And will it turn out just as well?
Absolutely! Some people think it is the tastiest!
You're in Canada why aren't you celebrate Thanksgiving the second week of October I'm just wondering cuz here in the United States we don't
We do celebrate the second Monday of October...we just had our long weekend last weekend. Totally stuffed with turkey and all the fixin's! But it was yummy! And I used two of my frozen pie shells for a delicious apple pie for dessert. :)
Great idea for homemade pie crust. How long do they last in the freezer ?
In an airtight container, they will last about 12 months...but mine never last that long. LOL!
I'm not a pie maker, but u made this look sooo easy ,I will try it! Can I just freeze the dough,if I portion it out into 8 balls?I make hand pies a lot for my coffee group.
Sure you can. You don't have to roll it out first. I do that simply for convenience. :)
Love your video. Just curious. What does adding an egg do to the crust? My mother always added eggs. I never questioned it. Her crust was delicious. Thank you
Thank you! The egg makes the dough more pliable and easier to roll out.
I have used this same recipe for more than 50 years, except I use lard more than I use shortening. Only difference is I put dough in frig for at least an hour before rolling it out… holds together better. I do appreciate your freezing all the shells. Will do so once I get some room in my freezer!
I've never bothered with resting it in the fridge...I worry it would be tougher to roll out when it's cold. I find doing it right away makes it super easy to roll--almost like fabric! I understand about room in the freezer. Seems no matter how big my freezer is, I fill it!
