The Long Way Home - State Highway off limits
Overlanding is travelling over land, where the journey is the goal.
In this video I stick to the roads, but take the scenic route. And did I mention, I'm not allowed to use the State Highways.

After an impromptu meeting with some friends in the west coast bush. We take on a bit of a challenge, Cockeye Creek. Sometimes the unplanned adventures are the best one, this was definitely the case here. A big thanks to Paul and Colin. Music: A Gentle Invitation - Dawn, Dawn, Dawn

In this video I am out with the NZFWDA as part of the 2023 AGM. We do some tough river work and visit some really cool locations, not without issues. I wasn't the only one to break things, but didn't get much on camera. So come along for the journey and check out how deep some of these river crossings are.

Wandering around the Coromandel Peninsula

Making my way south along the peninsula, with some daft notion about going to town. I visit some interesting side tracks along the way, and eventually make my way to camp in the dark.

In this video I take the L300 Van up to Port Jackson in the Coromandel. The trip started out with a bit of a mishap but things were soon back on track. All easy roads on this trip, but it's more about the place. So beautiful. Music: 1. These sort of trips are fun. Earlier in the year I set the challenge to drive from Dunedin to Wanaka on as little tarmac as possible. Keep up the vids
I remember heading north with mum and dad up the old state highway 1 in the back for the Cortina station wagon. The good old days !
Yeah that’s exactly how to travel, choose a road and go, the longer the route the better.
I drove the Nevis Rd in 1980 from Bannochburn to Garston. I had a 73 falcon station wagon , it took a bit of a beating but survived ok.
Awesome! Love the nostalgia stops. This is living, Sam.
I love doing this sort of trip. You find all sorts of neat places. Awesome trip Sam Always take the road less traveled
This is a really cool concept Sam super chill, should definitely do more of them!
And right there is the enjoyment of exploring remote back country. The😊 difference between here and OZ is simply... take the wrong remote road over there and you might be dead.
Why would that be? @maitrikashin3907
Hello Sam, a question, of the various ways up to Old Man Range & Obelisk, which route has the 'staircase on it'? Because we will be travelling solo up there next February I think I would avoid that route. Thanks.
Can't wait for ya new videos mate! Awesome 😎
Cool still got the surf?
Hey Sam, I know your pain with getting videos compiled. I currently have a South Island trip from Nov-Dec 23, a Kaipara - Rodney trip from May 24, and now a Coromandel North trip from last week. Sign. So much to do, so little time.
Just Curious, Sam. You're based up north but doing lots of trips down south... Are you garaging one of your vehicles at each end of the country or spending heaps on ferries?
I spend far too much driving back and forth. I have thought about storing a vehicle down there somewhere, but haven't worked anything out yet.
@@SwampChook Is there any specific ferry, travel time, day of week, ports, months you recommend... for getting across the straight. I remember the Wahini from when I was a kid in Wellington. Wouldn't want to be in that.
Good to see ya mate, looking forward to seeing Napoleon Hill 👍👍
Nice to see you back Sam.
Hey, thanks!
I'm confused in the video you read a sign saying it was prohibited and then you just passed through? is it because you paid for a key?
Access is prohibited past Boundary Hut. That is as far as I when, and where I stayed the night. You do still need to get a permit from DOC and the gate code.
Well I guess I'm weird too, that sign is VERY exciting!
nice
Gore mud boggers...
Hey mate, may I ask what gps system do you have attached to your windscreen. Cheers bud 👍
It's a Garmin 66i, I've got it running topo maps, but it also has a built in satellite messenger which I like for safety reasons.
Good job this place is awesome you are enjoying like us without ripping it up😊
Hey Sam, Darky's Spur has been impassable since Gabrielle in Feb 2023. Basically that section of road, and the two bridges where you introduce the video all disappeared down the hill. You will travel a long way to see a blue sky like a HB Blue sky day.
Oh wow that's a shame, I'm still amazed at the extent of the damage down there.
Surprised, in Australia you really only get skids, rubbish and bogans anywhere accessible by 2wd - 99% of people who are set up for and head out into, more 4x4 only areas respect the land and tracks.
It's even more spectacular when you go to the top of the falls!
I bet! It's on my bucket list. Unfortunatley I didn't have the time that day.
Well done. I've seen you using this vehicle in subsequent and wondered if you might upgrade like this. Good choices. You still running COOPERS?
Thanks! I've gone with Hankook Dynapro MT2 this time, so far I'm pretty happy with them.
Great job. Your driving skills are already well documented. In a Suzuki now, rather than the Subaru (or as well as)? Snorkel AND diff breathers will keep your gear protected. A suspension upgrade for the Suzuki can provide a legal 40ml lift. I use Bilstein Shocks with Dobinson Springs. One size larger diameter tyres will fit under the guards but won't bust any steering arms and add to your clearance. I think I saw you in that Suzuki doin a trip up the northern west coast beaches. You get around.
Thanks for your kind words. I still have the Subaru, but it is living a slighly easier life at the moment. The Suzuki is still a work in progress, but am really enjoying it. I'm based up north, but try to get to the South Island when ever I can.
What's with all the steam from under the hood? That would freak me out - but I assume it's something simple?
That's from water splashing up when doing the crossing. The Suzuki does seem to steam more than most, maybe the shape of the v6.
I'm watching this 1 yr on. A great trip! Thanks for sharing. Amazing, accessible scenery on a fantastic summer day/evening. Those rock formations are stunning. I'm curious about the rig you were using. Do you still have it? Obviously there's a few after-market extras... bash plate and a snorkel are visible. Do you have diff breathers too? Looks like you are running ATs which handle that track fine. What psi you running for that trip? What about shocks and springs, are they OE? You are obviously not in a boat. Great flex shot! I appreciate why that was a one take edit. Well done.
Thanks, for your comments. I'm just catching up on replys now. It's such a stunning place ther on the range. Can't wait to get back there. The Subi is good fun, the bash guard and snorkel are my own work. Fortunatley lift springs are avaliable for these, and I'm running King springs, which give about a 30mm lift. The tyre's are Bridgestone Dueller AT's, not overly agressive, but I have always got great mileage out of them. And don't get all the stone punctures like highway tyres. I usually run them around 20PSI on these kind of tracks. The Subi is pretty light still, and they are a light truck contruction tyre.
Hi, what year is the Vitara?
It's a 2006
What tyres were you running on that trip? What pressures were you using? Did I see you in a video heading Far North in a Suzuki recently (July 2024)?
i went there labour weekend 2023 and was an amazing trip for the first time at mavora
I don't think it's anything at all to do with the subaru it's tottaly down to your throttle control ie rpms are constant not fluctuating up and down that's the secret to keeping moving
You're definitely on to something. Keep it smooth, and the old philosophy, as little power as possible, but as much as nessecary.
You have inspired me to get back to off-roading although I only have a Subaru now. What camera/phone mount did you use?
I'm pretty sure I found that same hole where you bent your bash guard a few years back in the buggy
Just wondering how long does it take to travel from Lake Mavora up to Walter Peak Station and would one need to be an experienced 4wd driver to do this trip ? Cheers
I can't really say. It always takes me much longer as I am always stopping to mess with cameras, or to find geocaches. The road up to Walter Peak is more scenic than difficult, and well worth the journey. The side trip along the lakes is a bit more extreme, but you can see plenty without doing this bit.
Shocking the amount of slash from forestry in some areas of background.
Just found this site, great filming. Danseys Pass is my fvourite piece of NZ, love Otago. Spent time here rock hunting while boyfriend and his friends were gold panning. Pitched tents in area before the pub. Every night we ended up at pub, love it.
Thanks for that we going there this coming summer good you showed the track just what I wanted to see have you been up to forks hut
Cool shot of the rock and truck man.
I went there on my adventure bike in March last year. I got a code for the gate because I thought it was the right thing to do to support the track. But a few bikes rode down to the beach to by pass it. A 4x4 also got around it somehow. It's sad to see the state of the track in parts. Nightmare on an adventure bike.
I enjoy your Vids. I've tramped the Mavora thru to the Routeburn track, total awesome place. Cheers
Jerks in 2 tonne mobile panic rooms smashing the trails to shit. This is why so many of them are being closed like Mavora.
Im sorry, what? At what point are we 'smashing the trails to shit'? There is no other way to drive it. Tracks like this exist because people drive them and keep them open. I can assure you we did not cause any damage to this track.
Awesome video definitely looks awesome track . I so need to do what you have done with your Vitara and lifted it after market wheels and tyres X Rocks Bull bar and snorkel so I can start to get out there and do some of these tracks myself instead of just beach only for me . Because every bit of off road it bottoms out
Thanks! The mods have definitely helped, but it's still pretty low slung. Good bash guards are a must I reckon
Cockeye has always been a mission aye awesome video as always sam super sick drive bro! ☺️
Thanks! Definitely a cool track. Would like to go back sometime
Well done, thanks for sharing.
Hey mate, What time of the year did you do this? cheers
This was in May last year
Awesome video I just started watching your videos last night. The enjoyment of driving a GV Vitara I’m driving one too. But at least you have the 40 mm lift and snorkel and Bull Bar I don’t have any of that at the moment. 😊
How can you make a video about Pureora Forest without even mentioning the wonderful ancient podocarps that the forest is famous for? At 15 Min. after driving for ages thru cutover bush you finally reach the majestic avenue of ancient podocarps, Rimu, Totara, Kahikatea and Matai, you don't even acknowledge them. Do you actually see anything on your trips apart from your 4WD bonnet ? It seems you might as well drive in a boring pine plantation.
The poor suk won't last long on tracks like that 😢
No you're right there! I don't think I would take it places like that again. It's not really what I set it up for
Yahoo I live n Kawerau. Have been to the falls and also Matahi dam. For camping try lake aniwhenua.
