Sewing a 1930s Butterfly Sleeve Dress / Butterfly Sleeve Tutorial (Beginner Friendly)
Переглядів 8725 місяців тому
While 1930s dresses can be the most complex for vintage sewing, the butterfly sleeve itself could easily be sewn by beginners. It's just a case of a very spacious, rounded sleeve and stitching gathering lines about two thirds of the way down the centre and around the full upper part of the sleeve. I have added the pattern piece I used to my ko-fi page. I did draw this out onto metric pattern pa...

How to Sew Felt Flower Corsages 1930s Chanel-Style
Brilliant video! I enjoyed it very much ❤
I wear a lot 50s style circle skirts for casuel wear and have made a few petticoats from vintage patterns. Petticoats are must to make circle skirts look more fuller. I tend not have my petticoats not too floofy and full, but just to make then stick out a bit for practical reasons. Petticoats and slips are a girls best friend to protect your modesty, especially on those windy days. I think my petticoat has saved me from those embarrassing marilyn Monroe moments when a gust of wind blew my circle skirt way up over my head but the petticoat stayed down, Thank god xxx
Oh yes, I know exactly what you mean! And I’ve had embarrassing moments with wrap-around dresses with no petticoats on breezy days!Petticoats and slips are underrated these days. I imagine that you must be very glamorous in your everyday circle skirts. Wearing petticoats that aren’t too full means that 50s circle skirts look natural and not like we’re ’in costume’ I think. Thank you very much for watching and I’m always so pleased to know there are other vintage fashion enthusiasts out there! xxx
@@Samanthalovestosew Yes I agree, slips and petticoats are underrated. I always wear a slip or petticoat under my skirts and dresses. I think its nice to wear full 50s style skirts and A line dresses, its so feminine and very comfy to wear. Yes, wind can be a issue with those full circle skirts and dresses and can be a handful to hold down when a gust of wind gets under them.
@ We’ll just imagine that we look like Marilyn Monroe when it happens!
You have to be joking - why did ‘they’ go out of fashion? Who is this woman? an ice cweam pointy pocket is so fun & pwitty & all women were 5’2” in the 30’s. oh god I’m out of here; oh but wait we have V necks give you a nasty draughty on your chest! 🤢 🤮. We have a dwessy alternative! Serious seamstresses wave a hand to this fwilly home sewer. Fwills make men fwivolous! Keep sewing your fwocks.
Wow, what a great collection of styles and garments. Thank you for sharing.
I’m so pleased to know you enjoyed the video and seeing everyone’s creativity. Many hours went into the making of these costumes so it’s wonderful that they get an audience! Thank you!
Hi Samantha! That looks like it was a wonderful day. Everyone looks amazing in their outfits. Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Laura! It was a wonderful day (though it took me another day to recover, it turns out that going out and enjoying oneself is exhausting!!) The outfits were wonderful to see. Thank you so much for watching 💗
Thank you for putting this together Samantha, what a brilliant video!! And thanks for including me in there 🥰
I loved your spiders’ web costume and seeing the inspiration for it was fascinating. Looking forward to seeing you again at future events! 🧡
@ thank you so much, and likewise!!!
I'm so incredibly glad all of these fabulous humans were documented in their fancy dress 🥹🤍
They are fabulous humans aren’t they?! So skilful and imaginative 💗 I’m really pleased you enjoyed the video and thank you very much for watching 🥰
Wow 😃 this is EPIC, Samantha!! What an undertaking, every detail shared on these incredible costumes 💫🖤💫 Well done indeed, really really interesting and Oh so generous of the wearers/makers/creators to take the time to discuss not only thier outfits du jour, but thier daily wear too. I LOVED this 🖤 and I love enthsiasts, no matter what thier hobby, craft, lifestyle or obsession is! Thank you x 🌚 🐈⬛ 🌚
Rowan you do find the best emojis 😆 This video was a bit of an epic to make to be honest! But I was so impressed and amazed by all the thought and creativity that went into making these fabulous costumes. And those people that live their everyday lives in Victorian clothes (there was a bit of adjusting of corsets that were starting to get a bit uncomfortable by the end of the day!!) I so agree with you about enthusiasts - I also love people with passions/obsessions! Thank you for your encouragement, I might go on to tackle filming and editing a Victorian costumed Christmas, which is coming up! ❤️😘x
@@Samanthalovestosew It looks like you all such a good time. Ooh a Victorian Christmas a? Our Lady of Banner would approve!! 🌚
@ A friend on the walk pointed out her flat in King’s Cross - part of a beautiful gothic Victorian building, all tall windows and turrets! A real artist’s residence in the heart of London (ie, not cheap 😆)! xx
@@Samanthalovestosew Wow! 💫😃💫Well, we'd expect nothing less for St Bernadette, the patron Saint of fancy finery! 😄
Another wonderful video Samantha. All the various costumes were stunning. I was really into historical fashion for a while before I became interested in vintage. I really need to get back into sewing, although I can only hope to look half as good in my ensembles as the fabulous and creative people in this wonderful video, and I include you in that. I'm also really looking forward to the videos about more practical vintage. The only place I really go to is for walks with my dog, or else I'm doing stuff in the house so I really need some more practical stuff to wear. Yes so I'm really waiting for that one! Hope you are ok !
It sounds like we have the same lifestyle Jody! I’m thinking we need to bring back the wrap around house coats or overalls from the 1930s/40s and 50s in easily laundered cotton or brushed cotton, then have warm dog walking clothes that cover but don’t have hems trailing in the mud! I’m glad it’s not just me seeing the need for such garments! Thank you too for appreciating everyone’s costumes. People looked so splendid on the day it was hard to take it all in. Finding out how they’d created their costumes and the inspiration behind them made them all more individual for me. Thanks so much for all your support ❤️
@@Samanthalovestosew yes, I really need some housecoats for at home. I'm fed up of wearing old t-shirts all the time! I desperately need some more vintage inspired house clothes. Also really need warm vintage inspired dog walking clothes for that matter!
Everyone is absolutely gorgeous! I wish I could join in on this walk. It looks like the most fun (and I have a soft spot for Victorian mourning clothes myself)
It would’ve been wonderful to meet you if you could have joined us! Yes, there’s something rather fascinating and mysterious about Victorian mourning clothes. Thank you very much for watching again! ❤️
@ it would’ve been wonderful to meet you as well! I might consider seeing if I can next year haha. Thank you for posting. You always have lovely posts ✨✨
This was food for the soul, I loved it.thankyou so much for all your effort.xxxxx🐝🐝🐝
Oh I’m so pleased that you loved it! While it was a lot to put together I’m so glad I did because I enjoyed knowing more about people’s costumes and their inspiration for them too! Thank you so much for watching and encouraging 💗🌸xxxxx
I can tell you put so much work and effort into creating this reel Samantha. You probably didn't like the editing part. Surely you took a notebook and pen with you on the day of the event? So glad the weather was good enough too. I think the late 30's into 40's dresses is how I see you and I just see that as how you dress rather than see it as a fashion period. I suppose I am trying to say is that it is all very natural to you. Take care.
Ah you know me so well Ian! The editing took days and there were moments of overwhelm (even thoughts of giving up 😆) but I’m so pleased I didn’t as the glorious costumes everyone created needed to be seen! Back when I was a student late 30s dresses sold in secondhand stores for less than the new dresses I couldn’t afford, and I loved them more and they fitted me better anyway. I still have them, they’re my old friends! Thank you for watching (and understanding me!) 🥰
Love all the outfits so cute and adorable looking. Thanks for the wonderful video.🥰🥰
Thank you very much for watching and supporting - many hours would have gone into the creation of these costumes and it’s lovely that people have an audience for them 💗💗
Thank you for an interesting video Samantha and to everyone for sharing their creative outfits, some hand made, some thrifted, some collected, some reinterpreted, all inspiring and wonderful to see.
I didn’t realise till I asked people about their costumes how much variety of inspiration, sewing and styling there would be. I’m really pleased you enjoyed the video and thank you very much for watching! 💗
I love this content! Thankyou! Such beautiful ensembles. I’d love to see more content like this- what a treat.
I’m so pleased you enjoyed it and thank you for the feedback, which is always really helpful. There’s an event coming soon featuring late Victorian Christmas costumes so I shall attempt some more film making! 💗
I purchased a porcelain 1930 style half doll (an hour ago) to use in my dolls' house and you mentioned yours at the very end, Since it is Nov. 2024 now, I will see if you posted anything about that doll, as just found your channel and subbed.
Ah, I love that you are thinking of using the dolls in your dolls house too! I’m afraid I haven’t got anything more on my channel at the moment but, in that I have about 10 vintage dolls houses and numerous half dolls, there will be more to come! You’ve actually reminded me. I would like to create miniature costumes for my half dolls with scraps of vintage fabrics from my dresses 💗
What a lovely video to commemorate a fantastic day!
@@WhimsandInconsistencies Thank you very much (and what a beautiful costume you sewed … and the hat too!) 💗
Oh Samantha, this is as much fun to watch as attending the day itself, and bought it all back! I really enjoyed hearing details about everyone’s outfits as on the day itself time flies so fast and I miss so much. You must have poured many hours into this, following everyone up after the event and tracking us all down. Love listening to you and the way you present. Thank you so much for including me, I’m truly honoured 💋♥️🥂
Thank you for shepherding me to and fro and helping me with everyone’s names! Your deep red dress really stands out. I especially love the bit at the end of the video when you bow to that surprised looking couple! While the editing was a bit of a marathon it really added something for me too to know the details of everybody’s costumes - so much thought, imagination and skill went into their creation. Definitely a day to remember! ❤️🥰😘
I don’t remember seeing that couple and curtsying to them! Thank goodness for phone cameras, now I can actually recall all the good times I’ve had!
@ It was such a classic moment! My favourite in the video! ❤️
It was so nice to meet you, and thank you for including me!
The Victorian garments you sew are stunning and I love that you wear them every day!
What a brilliant video! Thank you for including me! xxx
I was very taken with the Victorian prison matron concept. So original and you’ve made it your own! xxx
What a fabulous day out filled with fun and laughter. So many beautiful and suave costumes, they were all incredible. It would have been a great surprise to the two casual walkers at the end of the video, perhaps they thought they had passed through a time warp and gone back in time. Xx❤️🌺
Thank you very much Lenore ❤️ What was funny was that there were a lot of dog walkers about and it was the dogs that looked especially startled by us! I don’t think dogs see that well so it must have been our silhouettes that they found so surprising! There were a lot of talented sewists and stylists on the costumed walk, and everyone so friendly too 🍂💗🍂xx
What a beautiful video Samantha! So many fabulous people, dressed in unique and very inspiring outfits! And the event was a great opportunity for showcasing them... You did a fantastic job with the video and it shows how much work you must have put in it! ❤❤❤
Thank you very much Arietta ❤️ It’s true, I met some very talented people and saw so many amazing costumes. It’s wonderful that there are people who keep alive vintage and historical sewing skills and patterns, and the beautiful fashions of the past ❤️🥰🥰
Thank you 🙏🏼 ❤️❤️❤️
So kind of you and I’m very glad that you enjoyed it ❤️🥰🥰
Awww! Thank you for sharing my look! So honored! ❤ you are amazing and just such a lovely stylish person 😍😭
I’m thrilled that you were happy to be in the video and am so pleased that you like it! And thank you very much ❤️x

Thank you very much ❤️ It did take a while to edit 😄 so it’s lovely to have my work appreciated, thank you x
What a lovely collection of knitwear and brooches. I knit - far too slowly - from vintage patterns. Which is fun and challenging.
Thank you so much … I’m living in my knitwear and brooches now it suddenly turned so chilly. I do have some more vintage knitwear to show off actually (knitted by my mother and embroidered by me) so that will be coming soon. How wonderful that you’re able to knit from vintage patterns ( no matter what the pace! … My sewing is slow too!)
Oh, how lovely!! I felt like I was there with you🤗🤩🤩🤩
Oh it would have been lovely if you were there with us!! ❤️🤗 Thank you for watching and joining us in spirit! 🥰
Such a creative fun make! The apron is such an attractive shape, and I like how covering it is so you can 'halloweenfy ' any outfit you wear it over.
Thank you very much Bella! I’m not sure all my kitchen pots and pans have fully recovered from the dyeing episode but I’m not much of a cook anyway!
Such a lovely insight Samantha. Such delightful details. I may use something from this video for collard on a blouse I'm making 😊xx
Thank you very much Linda! I know anything you create will be beautiful so very much looking forward to seeing your blouse with intriguing 30s collar! 💗xx
You are so creative! ✨ I love how your apron turned out and it looks fabulous over your pumpkin dress. 🧡🎃 It is an outfit filled with vintage Halloween charm. I love it so much!
Thank you so much Katie 🧡 I think I will keep adding to the embroidery, which is my favourite part of the process! Thank you for all your support since I started 🍂🧡🍂
Arww this is so kind of you 🦋I love a pretty sleeve. Gosh, the eeking out of every last bit of fabric was a close call as was your seam pop at the National Trust 🥰😂 Love your finished dress 👗
Thank you very much! 💗 Yes, a pretty sleeve! We don’t see those often in today’s fashion. I love them too. I know, the seam pop … I finally learned my lesson that cotton reels bought at car boot fairs might not be such a bargain after all! 😂
You are now ready to go down to the office and give all the fellas the high hat! 💅 Inspiring me to make some beautiful, sophisticated blouses for myself, too! Gorgeous fabric, beautiful garden, charming dogs and fun music! Thank you!
ha ha, yes, the high hat! 😁 I’m so pleased you like the fabric too. I’m always on the look out for genuine vintage fabrics and like to match the era of the sewing pattern to that of the fabric so it’s always wonderful when this is noticed and appreciated! And that I scouted out the pretty church gardens. Thank you for your encouragement 🥰
That’s a very clever Halloween project!! I loved your needlework ❤
Oh thank you very much Leslie! I actually had so many dyed napkins left over I might make a skirt too 🍂🧡🍂
Wow!!!! You did an AMAZING job with what looks like a very fiddly pattern and fabric! And the Scottie dog buttons are just so perfect with the fabric. (I love your funny comments about your adorable real dogs, too!) Eltham Palace was absolutely the BEST reveal background imaginable, and the tour you gave us was like gorgeous icing on a delicious cake 🥰 So inspiring and so charming!!! SUBSCRIBED!!!
Oh you’re so kind to say all this and have given such cheer to my Saturday evening. It’s lovely to have my ideas and efforts appreciated! 🥰 The pattern was a sea of perforations and the fabric slippy - I’m pleased someone noticed! And I drove across London to reach Eltham Palace so I’m thrilled you enjoyed that setting too. Wonderful to know you’ve subscribed! Thank you very much ❤️
Nicely edited short Samantha. Apron goes really well with your stunning pumpkin dress.
Thank you so much Ian 🥰 It takes a strangely long time to create a 10 second short so thank you for noticing!
It's such a unique apron! I love your idea to dye the napkins and patchwork them to make this! ❤❤❤
Thank you very much Arietta! I had so many dyed napkins left over from my £3 lot, enough to make a patchwork skirt or trousers I think! 🍂🧡🍂
Is there al8nk to Janine's video? I'd like to watch it but can't seem to find it 😮
Janine told me she hid her UA-cam channel sadly. She’s a commercial airline pilot now. Though she’s very much still sewing she doesn’t have the time for video editing. She’s very much missed!
@@Samanthalovestosew oh that's too bad, but congrats to her on her airline career!!
thank you so much for sharing!
Oh you’re very welcome and thank you very much for watching and encouraging me!
Love your apron! Now you need to make a similar one for Christmas.
Now there’s an idea! And thank you so much for your encouragement!
One eyed, three legged hedge hog, OMG I'm crying 🤣 That nightie turned out way better than the picture on the envelope.
Yes, Nutmeg the hedgehog! 🦔 The nightie is really cosy - next I’m making 1940s pyjamas! Thank you for all your support and encouragement, it really is a morale boost.
Beautiful results. The construction of the floral blouse is really interesting. You have such patience. Respect.
Thank you very much - there are construction techniques that come up regularly in vintage sewing that we don’t see today!
I loved this video of your collection. Having the details pointed out, up close, is just magical.
I can’t resist vintage clothes with interesting details because there’s so much to learn from them. I’m so pleased to find someone else sharing my enthusiasm!
That grey dress at the end is stunning! And the silk flowers, just wow!
I’m glad you love the dress and I was just looking at the silk flowers this week thinking I must plan makes to go with them!
Ingenious Halloween project Samantha and you look wonderful in the pumpkin dress and apron. So many clever and creative ideas. Love the colours you dyed, the patchwork, the applique too, all beautiful and I very much appreciate the sustainability. I need to make more patchwork aprons, having only one, imagining an owl apron inspired by your applique 🦉❤
Thank you very much, I’m really thrilled that you appreciate the whole creative process of making the apron. My mum volunteers in a charity/thrift store so I’m very aware of how much extra stuff there is, more than can ever be sold on, and vintage linens are such high quality too! A patchwork owl apron sounds wonderful - very decorative! 🦉🧡🍂
gorgeous. congratulations.
Oh thank you so much! 🧡🍂
Loved seeing the vintage market. More of that please 😃
Ah, I go to a few but wasn’t sure if people enjoyed this type of video - now I feel encouraged. Thank you! 😁
Yes, the conversation was a bit difficult to hear, but discovering what's out there was fun content. Thx. 😊
@ Ah, I’m going to an event tomorrow so you’ve reminded me to take my mic (though it can scare people 😆)
Perfectly Halloween! 🎃🎃 ❤❤❤
Thank you very much Lizzie 🍂🧡🍂🎃🍂
Hi Samantha! This is so adorable! I love the cute embroideries! They add so much to this. And the dyes turned out beautiful. Love it! 🦉🐈⬛🎃 It's a shame the crinoline was too large. Definitely not good for tight spaces lol😊
Hi Laura! Thank you very much 🧡 I really enjoy appliqué and embroidery. I nearly filmed the dyeing process but every surface in the kitchen was covered with pots and saucepans of dyeing napkins! It was too much mayhem already. I’m at the crinoline with wire cutters and duct tape now to see if I can shrink it down to a more manageable size! 🍂🦉🧡🍂
That is glorious, full of Halloween joy, love it xxx
Thank you so much, it was a fun project! Hope all well with you xx
@@Samanthalovestosew life is a little chaotic but love it, did you get the patterns?xx
@ I did! I’m so sorry I meant to write and thank you the moment I finally got the apron video out! So kind of you and I have the perfect fabric for one of them already. I do enjoy 60s style xx
I remember very well your pumpkin dress make. A real highlight and one of your most memorable makes. Great job with the Apron Samantha. I could not imagine myself spending so much time on a project. You are so skilled and patient. Nice dog cameo in your video.
Thank you very much Ian. I’m trying to comfort two terrified dogs because of the fireworks at the moment. I hope your cats are alright. Thank you also for remembering the pumpkin dress, I realise I’ve been doing UA-cam for quite a while now and have had your kind support from the start.
