I am an outdoor lover based in North Yorkshire, and enjoy adventures here, the Lake District, Northumberland, and anywhere I can get boots or tyres on the mud.
In November 2022 I trekked in the Nepalese Himalayas, in the Gokyo and Khumbu valleys, and have plans for more overseas adventures in the future.
In 2024 I will be heading to the Lakes for more hikes and a spot of wild camping, with a healthy dose of scrambling thrown in to keep things spicy.

Beinn Alligin - Torridon, Scotland - One Of My Favourite Ever Hikes
What an amazing hike in iconic Torridon. Beinn Alligin is one of Scotlands most iconic hikes, and it does not dissappoint. Offering amazing views, big climbs, and some entertaining scrambling, it is one of my favourite ever walks.

This is my best bang for your buck Sharp Edge loop. Taking in Halls Fell Ridge both up and down, plus Sharp Edge, there is very little climbing on the route up Blencathra that isn't interesting. Sharp Edge is great fun on a calm dry day, and easy enough for most hikers. On damper and windier days it becomes more interesting, so be prepared for the conditions. Bow Fell & The Great Slab via Rossett Pike and Esk Pike - Lake District Winter Hike - Introduction
Hi Dan, this is an amazing video series which I have enjoyed watching, thank you. Were other members of the group also affected by the altitude, and is it something you can 'train around' in advance before starting the trip?
Hi Henry, thanks for watching. One girl in our group was airlifted from Gorak Shep. Her vision was getting blurry as her brain was starting to swell! She was lucky to get down when she did. I think my issue was that I just wasn’t drinking enough. I’m not a big water drinker at the best of times, but I was only having about a litre each day. I should have been drinking around three. You can’t really train for the altitude, and you can be affected differently each time. The best thing is to take it slowly, ascend little by little, and drink plenty of water! Another good tip I would give is to take Vicks Vapor rub to help keep your nose clear during the night.
Highly recommended to come for Mera peak the November.
I hope you are well Oz I would love to come but getting the time away from work is not so easy. One day I will come back though.
Hi Dan. Superb, what a mountain Beinn Alligin is, just stunning, so glad the tops were clear for you. Thanks as ever for sharing you adventure. How tough were the horns. Was it a simple case of just take it steady and it’s fine? Cheers Dave 😀🥾⛰
Hi Dave. Yes the horns were mostly ok. There wasn’t one route up them, and I had a couple of squeaky bum moments, but I think I could have found better lines if I’d needed to. Loved this hike though, and I’d do it again.
This video beautifully encapsulates the serenity of the wilderness. The attention to detail in capturing the natural elements is truly commendable. Nice one Dan
Thank you 🙏 This was definitely one of my favourite ever hikes. Peaceful, but not too remote, with just enough technicality.
Glorious vistas! I planned a trip to Scotland just before Covid hit the world and had to cancel. But your video really makes me want to visit Scotland for a long hike.
It’s such an awesome place. I had actually planned to go to Morocco to climb mt Toubkal but put it on hold after the earthquake last year. That’s when I decided to take this trip. So glad I did. Get yourself up there. Just be prepared for the midges if you go in summer!
Can’t really write a comment without using the word ‘stunning’ either. A marvellous video to get those boots walking again!! Thank you! A kick up the backside I was needing!✊🏼
Do it Alan! Is such an amazing place. I can’t recommend it enough. Plenty of spots for some wild camping too if you fancy it. ⛺️
@@danpattinson How long does the round trip take ?
@ata1811 I spent 7 hours in total. I had just done Beinn Eighe the day before however so I was taking it steady. It’s about 5 miles flattish to and from the mountain, on an old Land Rover track, so easy walking.
@@danpattinson thank you for taking time to reply. I’ve subscribed so looking forward to your next outing.
@ata1811 no problem. My hope is to inspire people to get out there. Thank you for subscribing. Next video is going to be Beinn Alligin. Another mega day out, and maybe my favourite ever hike.
Stunning scenery Dan. I do like the silent movie format too, makes it more real 👌🏽
Cheers. Yeah silent is good rather than listening to me waffling on😂 Easier to film whilst on the move too.
Absolutely stunning! The way this video showcases the beauty of Scotland is just incredible. Hats off to you Dan!
Thank you for your kind comments 🙏 It’s hard to show some places badly. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely stunning scenery man, such a gorgeous silent hike! 🥾🥾
Thank you for watching. It is such a lovely area, and Suilven was a great day out, highly reccommended.
Hi Dan. I’m very jealous, I loved Assynt and especially Suilven. I was up there around three years ago. I need to get back up there. Thank you for sharing your day with us and giving me the kick up the arse in arranging to get back up there. All the best mate Dave 😀🥾⛰🏴
It was amazing, not just the hike, but the whole area. I can't believe how little traffic there is up there! I also need to get back up and explore some more.
Wow. What a great walk, thanks for that. Random question; what boots do you wear? Cheers
Thanks for watching. A great day out, I can thoroughly recommend if you’re up in the North of Scotland. My boots are Scarpa Maverick GTX. I got them last year on sale at go outdoors. I’ve used Scarpa boots for years. They always seem comfortable and seem to last.
Brilliant thanks, my ancient Brashers are due for replacement!
Beautiful views. Great video. Thanks for sharing. sub & 👍9
Thanks for watching and subscribing, glad you enjoyed it. It is such a beautiful place.
Hi Dan. Great to see you back out again, and what a place to be out in. That Coire looking up to the triple buttress is just amazing. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us as always mate Dave 😀⛰🥾🏴🏴
Thanks Dave. No slowing down for you I see. Cumbria Way looks like a good challenge, I look forward to following along. Scotland was so amazing, it’s another level. I just wish it was a little closer!
@@danpattinson Cumbria Way was amazing mate, I’d definitely recommend it, just fantastic and we got so lucky with the weather. Yeah it is saint it. I always say Scotland is the lakes on speed. 🤣
@DAoutdoors haha so true. Scotland is class.
Looks awesome Daniel
It is such a lovely place. Some long days out if you want them, but well worth it.
Looks mostly physical, rather than dangerous. There is not really any exposition so you just have to have the stamina to make it up , but other than that it looks moderate difficulty at most. Still, looks like a fun hike. Cheers.
Yeah it’s not too bad. There’s only one awkward little move, but it is mostly just powering up the scree. I think most average hill walkers can manage it no problem. Thanks for watching 👍
Good evening, Dan. Tosson hill view's look fantastic. There are some impressive views in the hills up at linhopespout. Parking there can be crowded, however. 👍
Yes some great views up there. I will have a look at Linhopespout next time I’m up. Although that’s looking like July atm 😔
It’s crazy that you’ve just popped up on my UA-cam! I come in the shop! What a small world😂
Hi 👋 . Say hello next time you’re in!
It would be a better video without that awful hokey music. Just hiking please.
The lords take fascinates me! Probably because I’m on the edge of my vertigo at the prospect. Not to mention my age! I certainly wouldn’t come down it! Nice video, and thank you!
Brought back memories of happier times when my wife and I climbed up and down Lords Rake, she while seven months pregnant. The weather became awful so we fled to North Wales where the weather was better. Next day we climbed up Tryfan.
Right, so you can walk up it.... not really a scramble.
It’s a grade 1 listed scramble, so yeah it really is a scramble
HI Dan, great to see you back out in the Lakes again. We were up on the Dodds last Saturday, the snow was amazing, proper winter wonderland stuff. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. All the best, Dave.
Cheers Dave. It has been a little while. Good to see you are still getting out 👍
Very nice dan 👍
Thanks Jimmy 🙏 Glad you enjoyed it.
Just the type of vid I’ve been looking for, really helpful for knowing what to expect. Planning on doing Lingmell then scafell pike then up lords rake, is it easy to get to via mickledore or would you have to drop down a bit then head back up? Thanks
Hi Liam. Glad you enjoyed the video. You can easily get from Mickledore to Lords Rake. I’m thinking over heading over soon to look at the west wall traverse and I think I’m going to drop in from Mickledore.
@@danpattinson brilliant, thanks mate. Also enjoyed your Tosson Hill vid, heading up there in a couple weeks the dog 👌🏻
Personal opinion: I have done Lord's Rake four times and the last time almost two years ago when I was 60. It looks quite intimidating when you are stood at the bottom. On all occasions I took the right hand route. It's an enclosed scree gully with good hand grips all the way. It is moderately strenuous but a pure joy to do. Steadily make your way up checking foot and hand holds. The tricky bit is at the top where the check stone was. Prolly you'll need to remove your rucksack and take it on the left. You'll have to haul your ass up this bit. Take your time and enjoy the trip, it's not technically difficult. I don't like heights or exposure and you don't really experience this. There is really no where to fall anyway except a slide a few meters down the scree. Make sure your grips and just enjoy it. I would recommend being properly equipped esp with good boots.
Hi Chris. Yeah it is a fun scramble up. I managed to squeeze up the right hand side on the tricky bit. It was tight though. I need to head back and do the west wall traverse.
Hi Dan, thanks for your reply. I have been meaning to do the West wall traverse. Please get back there and do a great vid. That'll be awesome.@@danpattinson
Twas a long time back the last time I did that, it looks bloody awful now, falling apart.
Going scafell this weekend Saturday weather's looking ok any advice
Hi Matt. Enjoy. Only advice I can think of if you are following this route is to keep a check of your route if you end up in the cloud. Most of the route should be ok in the frost too, just go steady.
@danpattinson thank you I had a route planned but then I've seen a couple of other routes now so unsure but anything can happen and change I expect abit of frost and maybe some snow already on top of the mountains at this time of the year how long did you route take all together
@user-lp2rg4il2t I was out for 7.5 hours including stops and faffing with the camera. 11.3 miles all in, so a fairly decent day out.
Such awsome scenery. Hikes like this just have to refresh the soul
You can’t beat a nice peaceful hike on a clear day 👍
hello we are on our way to Nepal next week , thank you for sharing your videos , they are really amazing and instructive . You didn't experience any altitude sickness ? you think because of the itinerary and the hike high + sleep low rotations ( quite amazed at the rotation you guys did at Machermo , did i hear right ? 5662 Meters ? ) . Thank you , Kindest regards
Hi, thanks for watching, it was a truly amazing trek. As for altitude sickness, yes I did get sick and didn’t make base camp. I put it down too food or a bug, but it could have been altitude. The one thing I think I could have been better at was drinking water. Make sure you drink plenty. Other tips I would give is take some Vics run to help clear your nose while you sleep. Also use a buff over your nose and mouth as much as possible to stop the cold air doing any damage. Even wear it while you sleep. Most of all enjoy and take loads of photos.
Enjoyed that , new sub here 👍🏻🏕
Hi Ally. Thanks for watching and the kind comments. I've subscribed to your channel too, looks like you have loads of content for me to get stuck in to. :)
@@danpattinson much appreciated 👍🏻🏕
Hey is this the toughest route up and down?
Hi. No not the toughest route. That would be up Broad Stand, but you are well into climbing territory then. Lord’s Rake can be made a little harder if you use the west wall traverse at the top.
Hi Dan, lovely video mate, thanks so much for sharing your day with us, and RIP little Jasper.
Was only there last week
Northumberland is great, so much quieter than the Lakes. Where did you stay? I'm back in a couple of weeks, but not decided what to tackle next time.
🎉Great footage of these mountain landscapes!
Thanks 🙏 I love being up there, especially on a moody day.
Looks a good route think I will try that when I do scafell
Yeah it’s a decent route. Interesting and nothing too steep other than lord’s rake and the short climb to it. Enjoy 👍
Great video!!
Thanks Alan, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Hi Dan. Great to see you back out again mate. I’ve not done Sharp Edge yet but looking forward to it when I do. Thanks for sharing as always. I’m out in the hills on Sunday. Dad wants to do Red Screes from Kirkstone Inn so looking forward to that. It’s always a fun little scramble. Cheers Dave 😀⛰🥾🏴
Thanks Dave. I’ve just changed jobs so been away from the fells a little while. Back on it now. I enjoyed Red Screes. It’s a nice summit, and a good climb up. The views north and south are great too. Enjoy it! 👍
Enjoyed that Dan - thanks
Thanks Tony. Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a good loop, a little windier than I had expected that day.
How many miles was this ? What is the quickest way up lords rake to scafell pike ?
Hi John, My route was just under 11 miles from Seathwaite: explore.osmaps.com/route/13827874/scafells-inc-lords-rake?lat=54.475959&lon=-3.232537&zoom=12.3670&style=Leisure&type=2d If you are just wanting to go up Scafell Pike, then at Lingmell Col just head south east up the hill to the summit, and cut out the Lords Rake/Scafell section. Its still a great route, and works well in reverse too. The quickest/shortest route up to Lords Rake is from Wasdale Head, but it is brutally steep. Then from Scafell follow my route to Scafell Pike. Quick/short routes in my experience are not always the easiest or most interesting.
@@danpattinson thankyou we want to do lords rake and scafell pike no more than 10 miles is that possible :)
Only from Wasdale. Head straight up to lord’s Rake via lingmell gill and hollow stones. Then follow my route to Scafell Pike. Then follow the track North west towards Lingmell back down to Wasdale. It’s about 7 miles. The climb to lords rake is very steep and loose.
@@danpattinson thankyou what’s the parking like a wasdale
I’m not sure what parking is like, I’ve never actually been to Wasdale. I arrive from the north east so it’s a long way to there for me.
Great vlog of a classic ridge walk. The last time I started it was in 2005 and had to cut it short at Dale Head Tarn as the weather was too bad.! Will be in Lakeland in a couple of weeks (Low Lorton) so your vid has promted us to try it again 18 years later!!! That GoPro looks like it is working well and doing the trick the wind supression seems very effective and image stabilization looks impressive. I have an Akaso Brave 7 LE similar spec 4k etc but the GoPro is the dogs nuts tbh. Take care and you have a new subscriber.!
Hi Chris, thanks for your kind comments. It’s a great loop, hopefully this nice weather holds for your trip. The GoPro is a great bit of kit, the benchmark for action cameras. I use a foam wind muffler with it too for even better wind noise reduction. I really need to get back to the lakes and make another video.
Cracking video Dan, Red Screes was my first ever Wainwright. Thanks for sharing your adventure. I’ve started my own little channel, if you fancy a look.
Thanks Dave. Red Screes is a nice fell. I will take a look at your channel for sure 👍

Thank you, glad you have enjoyed it 😃
I’m up to date with all your Everest videos now Dan. Absolutely stunning, what an adventure. Amazing experience, and you’ve captured it really well on video & camera. You did look rough when your were ill, surprised you managed to keep trekking on. Well done lad 👏🏾
Cheers Steve. It was a tough but worthwhile experience. I will go back one day and have another go. 👍
Massive respect for what you have achieved Daniel (Baz's Dad)👌
Thanks Paul. It was tough but still glad I did it. An amazing experience. I hope you've had a good hol :)
I would never recommend an agency and local operator whose itinerary is too fast and dangerous causing clients to get AMS. There should be more flexibility for decent acclimatisation. Sad fact is that trekkers want short treks to save money and agencies offer those, causing unnecessary suffering, sometimes even death.
One of the reasons I chose the trek I did was because it climbed slower than others I looked at. I think I was just unlucky and picked up a stomach bug and along with the altitude factor, made me rough. Most of the group were fine with the altitude, but obviously it effects different people in different ways. We saw many solo trekkers heading up as we were going down that were planning to gain too much elevation in one day.
@@danpattinson Yeah, could be just bad luck, and if you had not been to those altitudes previously it could be genetic also. In my experience about 15% of trekkers start to have problems at above 4300m altitude. Maybe I was to hasty in my judgement. Better luck next time!
Blimey mate, that looks a tough slog! Well done. 😀🥾⛰👏
Cheers Dave. It was so tough, and just the start of my issues. Everything is so much harder at altitude.
