  • After a rough day crossing the Cho La pass, I couldn't keep any food down. Luckily day 10 was a short trip from Dzongla to Lobuche. After arriving I went straight to bed to try and recover, but couldn't stomach any food ready for a long day to Everest Base Camp. With no energy in the tank can I make it?
The Gokyo Lakes & Everest Base Camp circuit is a slightly longer route than the traditional EBC trek. It detours from the normal route and heads up the Gokyo valley to Gokyo. Here there are stunning blue lakes, and a steep climb up Gokyo Ri at 5347m, with some of the best views of Mount Everest you will find. From Gokyo you cross the Ngozumpa glacier (longest glacier in Nepal) and the Cho La pass (5361m) back into the Khumbu valley, and then head for base camp (5364m) via Gorak Shep.
I travelled with Exodus Travels, a UK travel company, and our local team were Footloose In The Himalaya, both of which I can thoroughly recommend. Our group was a group of 13, all of whom were wonderful people, and a fantastic mix. I thank them all for their friendship and sharing the experience.

Hi Dan, this is an amazing video series which I have enjoyed watching, thank you. Were other members of the group also affected by the altitude, and is it something you can 'train around' in advance before starting the trip?

      Hi Henry, thanks for watching.
One girl in our group was airlifted from Gorak Shep. Her vision was getting blurry as her brain was starting to swell! She was lucky to get down when she did.
I think my issue was that I just wasn’t drinking enough. I’m not a big water drinker at the best of times, but I was only having about a litre each day. I should have been drinking around three.
You can’t really train for the altitude, and you can be affected differently each time. The best thing is to take it slowly, ascend little by little, and drink plenty of water!
Another good tip I would give is to take Vicks Vapor rub to help keep your nose clear during the night.
