Artie Shaw: He was bullied, He hated his fans and He was jealous of Benny Goodman (Part 2)
I can relate to a lot of what Getz is saying. I’ve struggled with addiction for 11 years, and I am now on this long journey of being a recovered addict. Addiction is a disease, and it has certainly changed me as a person because I grew up in a broken home, and that vice offered me an escape from all the traumatic shit that my emotionally unstable parents put me through. Those were dark days. A lot of jazz musicians from Getz’s generation weren’t willing to admit to being addicts, and I think it’s inspiring to hear one of my heroes own up to his mistakes. RIP Stan Getz 🙏🏾🎷
4:58 you normies really don't have the slightest clue about "ďřûgš"
"Tough questions"?! As if he's the President or a cancer surgeon!
I suppose you Yanks never saw the BBC documentary on Shaw. He wasn't forgotten in the U.K, for in my opinion his was the best of the white bands. I did hear a story that Benny Goodman was Jealous of his good looks, success with women and superior clarinet playing.💗
Genius !!!! Ornette covered that part of music that no one else was messing with . Like how you can take a musical knowledge and talent for improvision in the art of abstract noises from the instrument . Kind of like a guitar player messing around with feedback noise and using those sounds in music .
10:34 Benny Carter
There really are few people as contemptible, yet so fascinating, human, and in an odd way charming as Artie Shaw.
In 1980 I had a drummer friend in high school that begged me for 2 weeks to go see Buddy Rich with him and his parents somewhere in the Detroit area (Pine Knob I believe) but i didn't go because I heard of his ruthless reputation. Till this day I'm proud of myself that I didn't go see this asshole. And that I must admit I was pretty happy when he died. I wouldn't have understood anything he played anyway it was over my head at the time. And honestly I don't think he was the greatest drummer in the world anyway.... But I do believe he was the greatest drum soloist of all time.
Brilliant.
I love these interviews. Thanks!
Wow
First jazz rdcord I ever bought was bill Evan’s on green dolphin street, and his playing on kind of blue is awesome. Actually anything he did was amazing. Heroin addiction consumes everything around you. Trust me I’ve never actually gotten clean totally from it and I am 50 ur old and first did it at17 yrs old, but don’t let it change your opinion in bill Evan’s or anyone else who creates art at any level.
Dave Brubeck was recognized with the National Medal of the Arts, of course. But he should have Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom wor his dedication to the cause of ending racial discrimination. I was a fan of the DBQ, but I never knew of his efforts to help integrate music until much later.
I don't like atonally sounds not stable all over the place l listen and still it has a blue feel yet it sounds weird
Lonely Woman is one of the most haunting melodies I've ever heard. Nothing fraudulent about that. Don Cherry was also wonderful.
I love hearing jazz musicians talk about their craft
This is a treat and a blessing. I haven't run into any tech problems yet. If they're still there, I hope you can fix them. Brubeck was that rare thing, a great man as well as a great musician. Thank you for doing this.
I don’t like the way the interviewer keeps interrupting Dave in the middle of an answer and then asks him an unrelated question. Very annoying. 🤦
Our solution was to leave the arm up on the record player so the Evans album repeated over and over.
Great interview - but my audio stopped after 22:22
yea, UA-cam cant give an explaination, i may have to repost
Sound cuts out for me at 22:27. Anyone else notice this? Great interview up to that point.
I'll check it out, Thanks
Same :(
Great interview with a very important musician. I don’t hear Brubeck “struggling” to answer questions. He merely took the time to give well considered, well thought out responses. That approach often leads to more substantive statements, instead of just instantly spewing out tired old cliches like many people do.
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
How can I get in touch with Joe Smith, I’d like to use part of this amazing interview. Martin Shankleman (ex BBC journalist)
thanks for sharing! Im a student at a university and they used this video for a discussion. theres a setting to allow other sites to stream the video playback that is currently disabled for this video. If you enable this setting, you would still get monetization and view counts, it just makes it slightly easier to use as a resource for educational purposes if you allow that :) just wanted to let you know, thanks again!
great synopsis of his life and career! Nice work!
what`s the wonderful track playing in the background of this video? any ideas? thanks.

@@onetrackjazz very nice, thanks.
I met him a couple of times, but I was just a kid... So he was nice to me.. 😂
Watching this after listening to “Out to Lunch.” What a tragic, preventable death. Gone too soon. Thank you for making this film.
What a shame he gave his loyalty to Richard Nixon who was a degenerate racist like Rockefeller and Ronald Reagan. Tapes of Richard Nixon and Ronald Regan making fun of people of color were released a couple of years ago. I love Lionel Hampton's music - it saddens me to find this out. He was a self hating black man who judged black people thru the eyes of white supremacy. As an African American that part of the interview offended me - I'm done with Lionel Hampton.
Yeah they cut out the parts where he starts to talk about reading his Bible at least twice 🎉Wes Montgomery was in his band too🎉 Hope you are well God loves you deeply shalom 🤗🐼♥️✝️💐 Philippians 4:8
At least twice?
Thank you .... Thank you .... Thank you for posting this.
I am 64 and first became aware of Lenny Breau when researching the beginnings of The Guess Who, as someone who is well versed in personality typing psychology, it is very clear Lenny was an INFP personality type, as am I, so my interest in him and the fact he is not well-known is indicative of that. A sweet man, his interests to follow his heart regarding his creative spirit contrary to following the status quo of music of his day, is a very INFP thing to do. When The Guess Who had their big hit with American Woman, all Lenny cared about was asking Randy Bachman what he was doing regarding jazz music, hence, after that Randy Bachman incorporated jazz into his rock creations more prolifically. ua-cam.com/video/KeFD1oz4BuY/v-deo.htmlsi=El2XFaNk1gfI7S6D

Has the author never heard of (or heard) Art Tatum??? I mean, I love Bud (he's my favorite pianist, with Monk being my favorite pianist/composer) but as far as "lightening fast execution" Tatum was, at least, Bud's equal, and was, more than likely, his model...
Cool. Thanks for sharing
Yep he is certainly the original guitar hero who rose to the top with Benny Goodman. Goodman was at time, as popular as the Beatles. Upon joining Goodman at the age of 21-22, he was heard on the radio waves all over America, made the electric guitar popular, creating his unique modern style of guitar and died at the age of 24 years old. His nickname was “the Oklahoma trailblazers”.
I looooooove this channel! Thank you!!!!
Thank You
Epic! Woaw! I was so fortunate meeting this great artist/man back in the 80's/90's. He sounds even bigger today!!!!
My grandfather knew Bud Powel and told me stories of their youth. I am not sure I am strong enough to have lived in that time but to know these so called angry men created such high level complicated art is amazing
Interesting subject. I caution any person despite race to ever call a man from tis time Angry. That is conditioning to make him seem odd. He is supposed to be angry and John Colerain, Eddie Harris, Les McCann, Art Blakey, Albert King, T Bone Walker and so many others packed a .38 or .45 and depending on their mood would pull it and place it under your chin if you came at them wrong. They were all nice and kind but play with them the wrong way or call them angry to they face will get you deaded in epic fashion. My dad told me once many of those very people scared Nat King Cole and many others back in the day. Black folk are not Monoliths despite how may white people like to place us. To us this is Music, to white people it is Black Music....that is an example of how whites only use division to understand others. Music is music but to whitey it is more oa another form of oppression.
Spontainity and improvisation in the blessed moment is the gift jazz presents to the human spirit. Artie Shaw was the first white guy to recognize this.
What about Bix?
maybe
How could somebody be such a jerk and then turn around and make something as lovely as "Artie Shaw Plays Cole Porter"?
Ray Charles thank you!!!!!!!
The answer is, of coure, yes. I met Sun Ra in the Stables, a bar outside of E. Lansing, MI, where the Arkestra was playing. He asked me to go to Jupiter with him! I did have a chance to buy some El Saturn and Thoth records direct from the band, which I still have to this day. Saw him live twice, and both times were incredible!
“Music was just a facet of show business.” Interesting quote.
